What do you do with a loveseat that looks great but no longer fits into your color scheme? Include it in your next garage sale? Donate it to a charity? But what if it’s too good for that? Consider selling it through a consignment store.

Next time you’re in the area of Fox and Oaklandon Roads, spend a few minutes in Consigned by Design at Geist, at 11659 Fox Road, just east of CVS. Once inside, you will find nearly 5,500 square feet of treasures, everything from furniture and dishes to artwork and other home décor. Not only is it a good time; it’s also eco-friendly in terms of recycling and reusing what’s already on the planet.

Owners Dana and Jeff Johnson say their inventory is constantly changing. And one stroll through the store is never enough because it’s impossible to see everything from wall to wall. There are hidden treasures everywhere.

“The store has been here for six years now,” said Dana. “Last September, my husband and I bought out my previous partner, Lynn Beaty, but Lynn still works in the shop part time. She loves the people and the people love her. The store is really her brain child. Our business has really grown during those six years. We were able to expand the store and now we have about 2,500 consigners on our books.”

Besides Dana, her husband and Lynn, Consign by Design has a team of six employees, including one of the Johnsons’ daughters and a daughter-in-law.

Dana says her general rule of thumb when explaining the consignment business to others is, “if you wouldn’t buy it here, we wouldn’t consign it here.” Here are some of the items they accept: new or gently used high quality classic furnishings and furniture; artwork; centerpieces, candles, vases and urns; china and crystal; decorative mirrors and pillows; sterling silver items; lamps; collectibles; jewelry; clocks; oriental rugs; and much more. All items are sold “as is” so consigners need to offer them in clean and good condition. Dana says a little elbow grease does pay off.

Most consignment stores, including Consign by Design, do not accept things like appliances, electronics, dishes and glasses that are not sets, or items that look too homemade, faddish or are not assembled. Stuffed animals, mattresses, sporting goods, tools and musical instruments are also not generally accepted.

So how does it work? It’s a 50/50 split of the actual selling price. But here’s where it gets interesting: the selling price goes down by about 20 percent after the first 30 days and then again each 30 days thereafter, as long as the item

“My students do love their physical education classes,” said Ellen. “They have it two times a week. But I think, as a whole, our kids need to go outside more and get away from the video games. This is a way to model good life choices for them. I feel my running does that for my own daughters. I can’t tell them exercise is important and then not do it myself. I am so excited to share my love of running with my special students.”

On February 28, Tom BonDurant and Mike Smith with Runners Forum pulled up in front of IPS School #44 with a van load of new Saucony shoes. Runners Forum has been the official shoe sponsor of the Geist Half Marathon since its inception four years ago. Fifteen Running Club members gathered in the school’s library where BonDurant and Smith set up a temporary shoe store, outfitting each child with their new shoes.

Training began the following day, with the grant money going toward water, Gatorade, healthy snacks, socks and other needed items. Ellen says she has also had individuals provide needed items such as team running shirts and other things. She said Riverside will be well represented on the race course and on the sidelines, with other students, parents and teachers cheering. “I hope we can line the streets with fans cheering on our new team!”

Ellen uses the analogy of running in her classroom as well. She instructs them to “train” all week for things like tests and quizzes and she tells them to train all year long for the ISTEP marathon.

“Now I can talk to them about REALLY running in a real race. I know all will finish strong. My hope is that instead of holding my medal, they will be able to hold or wear their own! My goal is to share my love of running with them so that it continues with them even without me.”

“I wish we had more Ellen Autens out there,” added Britt. “After doing this for four years, I’ve seen first-hand the power of what one person can do to initiate change in kids’ lives. Seeing the smiles on those students’ faces as they tried on their brand new running shoes, hearing the excitement in their voices to go running, and knowing that our organization had something to do with that is a priceless feeling. Our Geist community should be very proud.”

they knew they wanted to tell the stories of working ventriloquists: people working everyday jobs, practicing in small towns, in a field of work that was nearly extinguished in the mid-1970s with the death of the TV variety shows. “It’s hard to work in any form of show business, so I really wanted to see how these people’s families responded to their desire to make a living in this somewhat obscure form of entertainment,” says Mark. Almost uniformly, the subjects in this movie are misunderstood and encouraged to move beyond this hobby.

The dream shared by the artists in this film resonated with audiences everywhere it was screened, including at the Palm Springs International Film Festival, which named it “Best of Fest.” This film is not really about ventriloquism: Dumbstruck is a film about five people who happen to be ventriloquists. It’s not essential to have an interest in ventriloquism to enjoy this movie. In the end, you will laugh, cry and root for these real people, whose hobby ended up being so much more. This movie is dedicated to Marlene Cohen and all her friends – Firedog, Gertie the Birdie, Weezer, Flo and Shy Pig.

When asked how she began her journey into ventriloquism, Marlene replied, “It was a gift to me. I didn’t study or practice as it just seemed to come easy to me. I loved watching the Shari Lewis Show on television years ago. I loved it. And so I decided to begin my journey working with puppets in my classroom. I can’t tell you how proud and humble I felt when at the end of the film I saw my name appear and that the movie was dedicated to me. It was amazing and overwhelming … I’ll never forget that moment.”

Dumbstruck delivers a powerful message that to dream is to bring about the self-expression of a deep-seated desire to have one’s voice heard, and as seen through the efforts of the five ventriloquists followed in this film, to speak out and overcome struggle, even if one’s medium is a little … well, wooden.

Fun Facts• Ventriloquism began as an

ancient religious practice. Early ventriloquists, or belly-talkers, were believed to communicate with or channel the disembodied voices of dead spirits. Later generations would be condemned as practitioners of witchcraft. It wasn’t until the twentieth century that the transition of ventriloquism from an occult act of trickery and deception to one of entertainment and comedic spectacle would be made. Vaudeville shows would be its evolutionary medium. A decade later, Edgar Bergen and his sidekick Charlie McCarthy were on the cover of Time magazine. And now it’s back. Stronger than ever.

• The Goffmans shot about 300 hours of footage and had three extra characters who, despite their amazing stories, couldn’t make it into the film due to length considerations. One of the most difficult parts of making the film was pairing down their 300 hours to just under 90 minutes.

Rainmakers has grown exponentially since it started in 2002, and Tony is the first to admit that Rainmakers’ motto Be More Serve More is nothing new; it’s just a skill that has fallen by the wayside in modern culture.

Tony believes faulty thinking often derails business growth. “A lot of what holds people back is that they think they know how to network. We try to hammer strategic marketing into their heads. Most people don’t know the power of marketing within a niche, which means they don’t understand the power of networking in a niche. And they don’t have a strategy to find other players within their niche. Those are three significant barriers that we really try to get people through,” he says.
