March 2011 Greetings too all. The club end of financial year is upon us again. Your annual subscription for membership expires on March 31st. The gate key will be changed on April 30th per usual. Subs have been set by the committee for the financial year 2011-12 at $180.00 inclu- sive of GST. This is an increase on last year made up of two factors. The first is the impact of the change of GST from 12.5% to 15% and the second is a 5% increase to cover the cost of infla- tion. The committee intends to make small annual increases to the subs in line with inflation so to avoid the huge adjustment the NZHA was forced to make two years back after not increasing subs for a decade. This year the club will be conducting a com- plete recoding of all locks as the current sequence of keys is ex- hausted. A one off key fee of $15.00 will be payable also. Please remember that a firearms license MUST be sighted before a key will be issued. NO EXCEPTIONS. Included with the newsletter is a renewal form for each member to com- plete and return with payment. It is essential you complete the form FULLY in order for the NZHA to maintain an accurate membership record data base. Should you choose to post in your payment and do not include a completed form your membership will not be processed. Per rule 7.B.3 on the NZHA charter, any membership not renewed by the last day of May will be struck from the records and said members will be subject reapplying for membership via the usual process. A HELPING HAND: The NZHA has extended an offer to Richard Wilhelm of Wilhelm Arms and Optics to use the club rooms as a base on a Tuesday evening in view of Richard’s earthquake predicament. Contact Richard directly to make arrangements. [email protected] www.wilhelm.co.nz The NZHA has extended this offer to Talon Arms and Hamills given the horrific events of February 22nd. Now speaking of the earthquake I am pleased to report the club- rooms and facilities have remained undamaged again. The baf- fle beams on the rifle range experienced a small amount of movement which has since been remedied but all other features are fine. TRACER AMMO: Have you all seen that the good old boys at Gun City are presently selling 7.62X39 Czech milsurp tracer ammo for near give away prices? True! So go forth and get yourself some while it lasts………. and go and find somewhere OTHER than the NZHA range to use it. NEW BOUNDARY FENCE: We have received reports of enthusiastic people climbing over the newly completed security fence. This is an unlawful act and an persons caught doing so will be trespassed from the site. In order to discourage such activities the committee will be adding a BARBED feature to the top of the current boundary. We had been planning an electric fence but the electricity supply has been patchy lately…………….which brings me to………….

THE EARTHQUAKE OF FEBRUARY 22ND. Where do I start? A day that not one of us will forget, ever. After our city braved the September 4th quake and heaving a sigh of relief at NOT ONE life being lost, nature pulled the trump card on the 22nd. If anyone had told me 6 months ago that our fair city would be ravaged by an earthquake that would take 200 people from us, I would have laughed. I am pretty sure the scientists would have laughed too. It just goes to show that we all need to be prepared all the time. Being at work an away from my family, the locations of which I was not sure of, was unpleasant at best but that is something most of us will have experience that day. On a personal note, it has been a particularly troublesome three weeks for myself as I have lost a very dear friend who became a victim of the PGC building. Michael and I started school together in 1974 and his death has effected me greatly and more so than that of my own father. To all of our members and their families I want to say please look out for each other at this awful time. Nerves are easily frayed at times like these and emo-tions run close the surface especially if prior the quake you were under a bit of acid to begin with. I appreciate many of our members are most likely still experiencing utility challenges, ie: no water or toilets. Through my work I have been helping unload thousands of chemical toilets from charter flights and never has the Christ-church airport seen so many 747 freighters. Don’t forget the club has a bore of it’s own with good, clean water. If you have containers, don’t be shy about rocking out the NZHA site and filling them with fresh drinking water to save boiling the living daylights out of town supply. Of course to add to the mood of the city today (16th March) we hear the news that was, in real terms inevitable, that the Rugby World Cup will be bypassing Christchurch. I don’t even follow rugby but was still disappointed. Being philosophical about this it’s probably for the best. Our city infrastructure is taxed right now and just imagine the amount of human waste 10000 members of the Barmy Army could produce living exclusively on a diet of meat pies and beer! So good people, chin up and let’s look forward to better days to come and spare a thought for those in Japan right now.

Working bee April 10th. Lots of do before winter sets in.
