CONSTELLATION MODEL FLYING CLUB

Bi- Plane Day- 27th January 2019 By Don Howie

We had great weather, cool with a slight breeze, certainly better than the recent very hot days. Many ready to fly models were present and Dale Packham gave us the usual show with his

large aerobatic scale models. Dale mentioned that he has three different rates on ailerons, rudder etc, so he can do knife edge loops, circles etc. The slow inverted tumbles require full rates on elevator.

The models featured are scratch built from balsa kits, produced many years ago. Ron Ousman was flying a 1/5 scale, 84 inch span Fairy “Swordfish”, scratch built 20 years ago by Geoff Burfield, who only flew it twice. The

model has an Enya 155 four stroke fitted and weighs 6 1/2 kilos. The model is covered in nylon with Humbrol enamel finish. The ‘Swordfish” was used as a torpedo bomber in WW 2 and they disabled the German “Bismark”

battleship in 1941 allowing the British naval fleet to sink it.

Roy Fuller had a scratch built Fokker Trip-plane at ¼ scale, the model was built by the late John Bates. The model was covered with Solartex with red water based paint finish., the model now electric powered with a Turnigy motor, 100 amp speed controller and 8 cell lipo pack, turning a 20 x 6 wooden prop. The model has a very forward centre of gravity, near the leading edge of the top wing and it flys just great.

Barry Carpenter was flying a ¼ scale 88 inch span Precedent “Stampe” finished in Solartex with acrylic yellow paint. This was a popular British kit in the 1980’s and it goes well with an Enya 120 four

stroke, hardly seen these days.An interesting biplane that dates back to 1938 was built a number of years ago by Brian Gibbs from Constellation,

now owned by Mike Savill. The original model was only 39 inch span (top wing), flown free flight with a small ELF spark engine that had very little power, the model weighed only 6 ounces (without engine). It was designed by Frank Ehling from Jersey City (near New York) and shows that chaps back then designed some great models. I think this model, called the Elf Bi-plane, now about double size, has an OS 60 four stroke for power.

The magazine radio modellers read from the 1960’s was Radio Control Modeler, produced by Don Dewey in California. One of the main writers was Chuck Cunningham who wrote a column titled “Cunningham on R/C” that was very popular and informative. In the 1970’s, his large “Lazy Ace Bipe’ at about 2 metres span, was very popular. Keith Sales is flying this one, built by Doug Bungy (Constellation) covered with Solartex and powered with an ASP 120 four stroke.

Electric Day – 13th January 2019 By Don Howie

This is usually the first organized flying day at the start of the New Year, and again proved very popular, with some very nice looking scale electric models, designed and engineered in the US and then built in

China.

The scale models designed in Vietnam (Seagull and Blackhawk) also have a Canadian influence and are also built in balsa (of a type) and lite ply. Tom Cole likes these large aircraft that look good and fly well. Most of the rest, made of white foam, designed in China are not the best for beginners, but are made in great numbers.

I like to feature models that are hand built of balsa and ply by the modeller, are easily repaired and not something one can buy and fly. The 420 square ins wing area “Lanzo Bomber”, the design from 1940 called a “Baby Bird” and flown by Stan Gurr has a 1080KV eflite electric motor turning a 8 x 41/2 prop. The model is covered with transparent red iron on ProFilm and is perhaps the most stable model ever designed by Chet Lanzo in the US.

The “Big Birdy”glider sold in the 1980’s was produced by Joe Bridi Enterprises and was designed to be simple to build and great to fly. Peter Leaney built his for electric power with a Turnigy motor turning a 12 x 6 folding prop, 30 amp speedy and 1300 lipo pack.

Rex Brown who is a very competitive Old Timer and glider flyer, he was part designer of the Model Flight “Stepp 3” glider, that I flew in thermal contests and hope to convert to electric power in the future. Rex had a 66 inch span (original size) “Quacker Flash” that had been converted to electic power. The design was kitted by Megows in 1937 for the Bunch and Brown engines and a great number were built in the1930’s. The model was covered with tissue, seen on the wings, but most of the model now has Profilm iron on covering. These aircraft are very easy to fly and relaxing for the senior flyer.

Mal Pring has been designing gliders for over 50 years and his latest is his “Skyliner No. 30” of 3.2 metres span. The wing came from a previous Skyliner design and has been modified for FPV flying with the high mounted electric motor turning only a 9 x 6 prop, whist the camera is at the bottom, front of the model.

The model fits on a dolly and has ailerons fitted. It took of easily and Mal reports it was interesting to fly with many glass houses, trotting track, water chanells etc, much better than SSL Park with just open paddocks. Mal is seen sitting down flying his aircraft with a modified welding helmet and goggles whilst Rex Brown (at the side) keeping in sight.

Concorde Model Flying Club. For a few years the Concorde Model Flying club had no base to call there own, club members became associated members of other clubs to keep flying and in touch with the social aspect of the hobby. Made worse was the fact that the old field was packed up

into a shipping container, which was broken into. The club lost many things including a tractor used for land maintenance. However, the lights have shone favourably at last and Concorde now has a parchment of land to call Home. The shade cloth is up. The runway is levelled the car park is marked. Everything is almost set to go with a brand new field for the club. The property was found in the spring of 2016, and negotiations with the owner began to put the property up for sale. The owner accepted in the summer of 2017 and the application to purchase was put into MAAA in Mid-Autumn. In late August MAAA gave the new field approval and plans were lodged into council in September & by late November the council had granted planning approval. Settlement went through in mid-way through 2018. Once all the formal leases where agreed upon and signed the site changed drastically. With work commencing from the 2nd of November 2018. Since then, the new runway has been cleared and levelled, the pit areas have been given shade, the paving laid down and the roof was put on the club room to keep us all protected from the sun. Concorde has a run way that runs East – West. Normally that may be a concern for those of you thinking about the winds. But the runway is 40 meters wide by 240 meters long. So any wind direction can be used. The club does run in the air space shared with Edinburgh Air base and all approvals have been granted.

The new field is hoped to have input from new members for the additional use of space. Ideas include a semi permanent FPV track for quad copters and wings to race around, on-site camping (limited facilities) for event weekends. To name a few.

Now that Concorde has a place to call home, it will be a good time for new members to come into the hobby. With a big push for FPV quads and wings in the community the addition of a dedicated FPV area / track will be a great venue, possibly even for state and AUs wide competitions to be held. Concorde MFC would like to thank a few groups of people. Firstly, the Barossa Valley Model Aero Club and its members, for allowing Concorde members to fly between November 2016 to the end of June 2017 for free to keep us together. It speaks volumes for the hobby when clubs can rally together to keep the dream of Concorde alive. Thank you to the members of Concorde that have stayed the distance to see a new field come to light. Also, to the new members that have joined during this process. They have seen the possibility of what was trying to be achieved and shared in the vision Thank you to the members of Concorde who worked tirelessly to make this dream a reality, from negotiating with the owner, council, MAAA, members & neighbours.

And thank you to the MAAA & MASA, you where the lynch pin in bringing this all together. If it wasn’t for everyone that helped, then who knows if South Australia would have another field or not. Concordes new field is officially open for flying. To celebrate an open day / come and fly day will be held in May (date to be advised), This will be a great time for existing club members to bring friends and family. It will also be a great time for members from other clubs to come and check out the new field. Concordes new home is 815 Boundary Road Reeves Plains South Australia.

SCALE AIRCRAFT SOCIETY OF SOUTH AUSTRALIA

How aeromodelling and this Society’s endeavours interconnect

We are a special interest Aeromodelling group - a society of like-minded people who have scale modelling amongst some of our passions.

We exist for sharing and enhancing all aspects of scale aeromodelling, building and flying irrespective of experience. All of our members belong to one or more South Australian MAAA affiliated clubs.

Leonardo Da Vinci (1452–1519) might be considered to have started Aeromodelling when he launched his model of a helicopter design from a famous tower. It flew using gravity and landed intact, and in all likelihood was the first notable model aircraft in history.

By the mid to late 19th century, enthusiasm and quests for flight had upsurged steadily to become many a national pursuit. Included were successful manned glider flights by Otto Lilienthal. The activities of others culminated in the 20th century with the first successful powered flight of a heavier-than-air man carrying aircraft by the Wright Brothers in 1903.

Parallel to these successes, miniature models of concepts were sometimes built, often mirroring misguided ideas, but they enabled original designs to be corrected and refined. The 20th century did indeed bring aeromodelling into being with an abundance of gliders, rubber and motor-powered models, all the time with advancements in materials, equipment, knowledge and methods. Some complex technical features in models which were only a pipe dream even in the mid to late 20th century have been perfected and are accepted by many today as unremarkable. The background story of their evolution is a separate and fascinating field itself to explore.

So, it became established that if you wanted to pursue aeromodelling as a hobby, you had to learn how to build your own model from plans and materials which required fabrication, assembly and finishing.

Currently, in relation to THE SCALE AIRCRAFT SOCIETY OF SOUTH AUSTRALIA:

• Members share lots of building & flying techniques, helping and learning from each other by discussion, teaching and demonstration.

• Regular meetings and flying events are conducted for members at which interested or aspiring modellers are welcome.

• Items and reports are published in the state MASA Newsletter.• Not all members are competition minded, but there are competitions available for those who are.

Competition is entirely optional and has different categories of challenge that are judged in various ways. • Apart from flying at their home club fields, our members fly regularly together at scheduled scale

model fun fly events during visits to various club fields and flying with the host club’s members. • These fixtures have become a part of the annual MASA flying programme. The Scale Aircraft Society

is always grateful that these visits can take place, and it is wholly due to the good will of host clubs, their committees, and members.

• We have scale modelling information for member’s use - specialised gear and techniques giving solutions to questions such as “where can I …” and how do I…”.

Then in the late 20th century, a bit more than 20 years ago, a monumental change occurred within our hobby. Modellers were presented with the choice either to build models from scratch as always (outlined above), or make use of the latest option to purchase new, virtually complete models.

The age of the Almost Ready to Fly model (ARF) had arrived. These models are mostly constructed in the traditional built up method and shrink film covered. Moulded models using foam or glass/carbon fibre reinforced plastics are also available, and that has coincided with vast improvements in electric motor and battery technologies. Models are bought only requiring some flying surfaces and fuselage to be bonded together. Completion is achieved by installing some hardware, engine and radio equipment. This has become a global phenomenon involving many commercial enterprises in numerous countries. Newcomers to the hobby can be flight ready now in much less time (days) than the previously required full build from a kit,

13

Page 14: NEWSLETTER · Model Aerosport SA Inc.Newsletter february 2019 Edition 3 CONSTELLATION MODEL FLYING CLUB Bi- Plane Day- 27th January 2019 By Don Howie We had great weather, cool with

14

or a plan and pile of materials (unless someone else did that for them). There are a couple of mixed blessings to the relatively uninitiated accompanying this, and apply to more

recent beginners to our hobby who are now heavily exposed to the ARF option. It seems though that the reduced manual assembly work required that shortens the time spent getting

airborne does have a bit of a price. The advantages of the shorter time taken to get a model to “flight ready status” imparts far less teaching overall about the structural makeup of airframes and fitment details when compared to modeller’s abilities developed in earlier times past. Sometimes outcomes during handling and flight materialize as less than desirable. These can include mismatches of engine power and airframe, for which over-enthusiastic flying may exceed airframe strength. Sometimes lowered durability and resistance to minor “hanger Rash” is depressing.

Then there are times when the extent of damage to an ARF after a “high deceleration moment” may be severe and/or extensive. It seems that a notable number of fliers are liable to discard a perhaps repairable airframe rather than try to make it flyable again. Maybe this is due to lack of know-how, manual ability, confidence, and possibly time – a shame.

Pre ARF-modellers have developed insight about the requirements for adequate structural strength of airframes that are sufficiently lightweight, yet robust. Those are most important skills! The resulting knowledge gap that discourages repair can be significant when an ARF model is damaged, with repair very often being a reasonable option for “those in the know”.

Nevertheless, ARF aircraft are enormously successful and have been the road to very many modellers achieving solo status and higher wings award levels.

These comments are genuinely not intended to be derogatory at all, but underscoring one outcome from choosing ARF models to begin our hobby. However, ARF’s are extremely popular for many very good reasons, and the majority of modellers of all interests with both little and much experience own them as we all can see at our club fields.

Over time, quite a number of the post ARF advent modellers who are stayers in the hobby seek advice about how to repair a damaged model, and about scratch building. That learning process is of course the road that pre-ARF modellers have already travelled. This is great, and all members who are able should give advice and help as much as possible when requests for building and repair guidance from fellow club members are made. This encourages and assists those who wish to broaden their skills, and gain wider satisfaction from our hobby.

It is NOT a requirement that Scale Society members need to be: -

1. Highly skilled at building models. As discussed, this usually develops over time with scratch building practice. All scale models have considerations and requirements for structural strength, materials, engine, control, weight and balance that are no different to any other category of model aircraft. The complexity of construction is often reflected in the choice of the full-sized aircraft subject chosen, as well as the number of airframe functions included – retracts, flaps, wing warping, bomb dropping, etc.

These models are built with accurate scale plan form, profiles and cross sections, and finished with levels of detail chosen by the builder, which can be moderate to great. This sometimes depends whether the model is to be built and flown as “standoff scale”, or entered into serious F4C competition level – that is entirely the builder’s choice. Models are often built with no intention to enter any competition.2. Buildingmodelsthathavesuchaccuracyanddetailthatitisaworrytoriskflyingthem.

Many highly detailed models are built and flown by members – often for their personal satisfaction. They put as much or as little detail on scale models as they wish to achieve. In most competitions, models are judged 3m away and much of any fine detail is not seen. Accordingly, such detail is rarely, if ever judged.

3. Requiring special tools. A basic set of tools is all that is required. More, exotic or expensive tools usually reduce work time, but are certainly not essential.

4. Requiring lots of time to be spent in building models. Some scale models do take a lot of time to build if large and/or complex. However, a basic scale model takes only a little more time than say a sport model. The scale subject chosen usually indicates the amount of work needed. Scale model construction can be challenging, often needing a bit of Ingenuity, (which all modellers develop) and at times can be “fiddlier”. However, it is emphasized that the vast majority of modellers should be able to learn to produce a successful

Page 15: NEWSLETTER · Model Aerosport SA Inc.Newsletter february 2019 Edition 3 CONSTELLATION MODEL FLYING CLUB Bi- Plane Day- 27th January 2019 By Don Howie We had great weather, cool with

15

and satisfying flying scale model aircraft. Help is nearby just by reading printed sources and by discussion with others who have building experience. Scratch building skills can be gained by purchasing a model kit of a straight-forward aircraft (not necessarily a scale subject), assembling and finishing the model. This teaches the builder typical proportions and types of material which make up the various parts of a satisfactory model. Finishing skills are also learned at this stage.

As a huge bonus, those building skills can be used to repair many a damaged ARF model that may well otherwise be consigned to the rubbish bin! On the other hand, modellers can build a scale model that is not especially complex from the many excellent plans that are published by Model Magazines, sold by model shops here and abroad, and there are other sources including the internet. Material requirements and size/shape are given on all of these plans. Whatever you do, you make and assemble the parts from sheet and stock materials following the plan and instructions, and guess what? - There is your just completed first “self-built” model

5. “Someone special”tocompeteinscalecontests(allincludeflying).Definitely not!! Many longer-term model flyers would know a lot of the flying manoeuvres already. Probably these have been attempted and perfected at their home fields. All of them can be looked up and learned during your normal club flying. In the category of “Flying only”, modellers can compete using an ARF scale model, as static judging and scoring does not happen.

Scale modellers find the category rewarding and strive to achieve the satisfaction levels that they set for themselves. By now it is probably apparent that most modellers construct with varying degrees of complexity and detail to achieve their own goals. Over years of scale building, modellers often raise the level of their personal “bar” to take on a challenge that has not been tried before.

Some Scale Modellers build very detailed models that do take some time and effort, but have a break from that subject for a bit and turn out say a simple sport model from scratch. This only takes a couple of weeks! Very therapeutic! That is, some “Scalies” don’t just fly scale! They also like building!

SASOSA hopes that the above presentation has helped to demystify scale modelling as rewarding, challenging, and within people’s abilities, rather than a puzzling, off the beaten track aspect of our hobby.

All modellers are cordially invited to attend our general meetings which are held bi-monthly at Parafield airport, or with our Southern Chapter, which meets at Noarlunga. Please contact our Secretary Trevor Woolfitt

MASA/Club banners. There was no further indication from club representatives at the meeting. The secretary is to send out a reminder to all club secretaries so this item and potential quantities can be finalised.

Concorde MFC brought to the attention of MASA the condition of the Reeves Plains boundary fences. The club also requested an update on:

• the status of water licencing currently sitting with MAAA and the previous landowner

• sought permission to use the existing bore facility if a separate licence could be obtained by the club

• sought an update on share farming on the property.

The President suggested that the fencing would be reviewed and given consideration by MASA executive. The status of the water licensing is an item for the MAAA and the previous owner of the licence who has been lax in moving things forward. During discussion, there was no objection to use of the bore pump if required, providing all maintenance and operating cost involved were addressed by the club. The President further advised that a meeting with the farmer took place in January and a 5-year lease is being drawn up by the MASA solicitor to share farm the property.

The club also advised that there was an error on their Area Approval which was referred to CASA for correction. A revised AA will subsequently be issued by CASA with no degradation in current operating conditions

CATEGORY REPORTS “The AAC Xmas Dinner took place on December 11th at the Seven Stars Hotel in the city. An enjoyable evening was had by those who attended. Flying at Unley Rd has been affected by the hot windy summer weather that has prevailed over the last two months however this has not deterred a keen core group from flying most Saturdays. Attendance at the AAC Delta Dart event at Ingle Farm Rec Centre on December 15th unfortunately only attracted a handful of entries. Next year’s event will be programmed in the middle of the year to avoid the Xmas “silly season” The next event on the SA CL calendar is the 2019 MASA State CL Champs, held at AMA Monarto from March 8th to 11th. It promises to be a big event this year as all 4 F2 events will be run as 2020 World Champs team qualifiers and large number of interstate entries are anticipated.” AAC requested that:

• This event be made official on the MASA calendar

• The event qualifies for MASA trophies

• A motion was moved by BVMAC, seconded by SHMA that the AAC event be an official sanctioned event in the MASA calendar and the event receive MASA sponsorships for trophies. Motion Carried.

• Registration of Remotely Piloted Aircraft.

On behalf of the MAAA Executive - CALL TO ACTION Correspondence has been forwarded to all members (30/01/2019) in respect to the CASA consultation process relating to the registration of all Remotely Piloted Aircraft(RPA’s) which including model aircraft. There are mixed feelings in the aeromodelling community regarding registration however it will become a reality. The United States and England have already implemented a national registration system and the Federal Government has decreed that a registration process must be in place by July 2019. The MAAA President and Secretary have been working with CASA for quite some time on this process and it appears at this stage all members will be exempt from registration if they fly from MAAA recognised fields in accordance with MOPs, Instruments of approval and legislation. At this time, the authorities appear to require MAAA members to register nationally if they fly from any area not an approved MAAA flying site, for this they will be required to pay a fee. The outcomes the Executive would like to see are:

1. MAAA members due to the safety culture of the organisation are exempt from registration when flying model aircraft at any legal location.

2. The MAAA membership registration system become the official government registration system for members.

3. The members MAAA registration card becomes the members government/CASA identification.

25

4. No additional fees, other than MAAA membership, are required for federal registration.Emphasis must be put on the MAAA Safety Culture, safe flying record over 40 years and training system where members are not only instructed on the legislation but also taught to fly safely. It may also be advantageous to stress how many MAAA clubs there are in Australia and your state and how many members. It is imperative that all ordinary member clubs and affiliate members get behind the MAAA and provide information in the consultation document reflecting our position. In a united SA approach please focus your feedback on the strengths of the MAAA, the MAAA member safety culture, State Organisations, clubs and training requirements, together with the excellent working relationship with CASA. The reason for a unified approach is that it will strengthen our community position and increase the best outcomes for our members.

In addition to completing the questionnaire, the MAAA is through ASAC attempting to meet with the Federal Aviation Minister to forward our cause. Members can assist by lobbying their Federal Members – after all it is an election year. We can through a concerted effort obtain a position whereby MAAA members are exempt from all registration apart from registration through the MAAA data base.

• MASA Administrative Policy 6. The President tabled MAP6 which is the over-arching document guidelines in relation to MAAA owned and MASA leased land. This document will be available on the MASA website for member perusal and contains no additional conditions to that of existing club leases.

• Succession Planning. Two MASA executive positions (Vice President and Secretary) will be up for re-election at the MAY 2019 MASA AGM. The Secretary announced that he will not be re standing this year and stated that we are all getting older and necessary that we urge some of the younger membership to step up and take on committee and executive positions to assist in running our successful organisation.
