ClassifiedsSales Assistant RequiredWe are looking for an enthusiastic modeller to fill a casual sales assistant role at our Goodwood store.

If you are an experienced RC modeller, preferably with some retail sales experience, and would like to join the team at Model Flight please send your resume to [email protected]

On Sunday 14th July members of SSL came together at their club rooms, at Milang, to do some model building.

The idea and project was led by Greg Potter. He organised some small electric glider kits for some members and others brought current builds or repairs down to get an opinion and help from Greg.

Greg has a long background in building. He was a keen Free Flight builder before he got into the models of the modern Gliding programs.

Our loss of field to a re grassing program may have helped move this a long, but what a great idea. Let’s close the field down more often!

Howdy All

Here is an extract from the Feature Article 'Best in the West' Written by Graham Ashby.

From the May 2019 RCM&E Magazine.

It made me sit back and think. Do yourself a favour, go buy the magazine, if it's still available, and read

the whole article.

Cheers

Ned Kelly

SHMAC

Best in the West by Graham Ashby

If you're not careful in this game you can very easily get set in your comfy old ways and – like a

loaf of wholemeal that's been kicking around collecting bluebottle – distastefully stale. To my mind,

every few years one should ask onself a few probing questions to determine whether one is showing

signs of early starchiness:

● Have I tried a new discipline in the last 5 years?

● Do I embrace change and technology?

● Have I ever built a model from scratch?

● Do I properly go out of my way to welcome new members when they turn up at the patch?

● Have I embraced 2.4GHz radio?

● Do I know one end of a lithium polymer battery from the other?

● Can I see the point of trying to encourage quadcopter pilots to join my club?

● Will I care when my local model shop has closed?

● Will I bother going to a show this year?

If you have answered 'no' to three or more of these questions then we need to chat. Actually, I'm

feeling a little embarrassed myself because, having sat here and typed them out feeling rather smug, I

re-read them and had to answer 'no' to one. Tap me on the shoulder when you next see me trying harder

to 'embrace change and technology' and I'll tell you which one.

Now, I've said this before so forgive me if I'm repeating myself but model flying is a hobby that

very much subscribes to the old adage that 'you get out what you put in' and if you stop 'putting in' what

you get out will actually dry up along with your interest. Trouble is, it won't happen overnight and

you're unlikely to notice until you suddenly realise that you've stopped approaching new members to

offer a friendly welcome, you've only ever flown a 4 channel sport model (with a glow engine), and

you don't go to shows because they offer no interest. Oh dear..........

S.A. Precision AerobaticsSA Precision Aerobatics Competition , Constellation, 21st July 2019

Third time lucky. After losing our last 2 competitions to bad weather we gathered on Sunday morning ready for anything.

Fortunately the rain stayed away but we shared the day with a strong NW all day.Despite the weather and lack of recent competition flying, some quality flying took

place over 4 rounds.F3A saw John Tonks improve all day showing us all how a plane should be flown,

despite a cracked engine mount. In Expert, Peter Ukhoff won the day by the smallest of margins from Sean Readett in

his first Expert event, 3000.14 to 2999.86. Sean’s incorrect roll direction in his ¾ upline in his first 2 stalls cost him a win.

Dave Marriner trailed in 3rd suffering from lack of practice due to the lack of flyable weather we have endured lately.

Advance saw Michael Smith put in some great flying to smash the 305 promo mark at 328 and earn his 3rd Advance upgrade, so off to Expert he goes.

Peter Readett came cruelly close to his first promo point at 304.4. Dean Smith had a personal battle with the wind to finish 3rd.

Expert is now our biggest class with 6 current pilots.Steve Marriner battled wind and a lack of power to take out Sportsman.

F3A Noarlunga 3rd August 2019

Well at last we had a lovely calm winters day at Noarlunga.Despite the great calm and overcast weather, the air was unusual and vison

was quite difficult.8 Pilots took on the challenging Noarlunga field. John Tonks was joined by Paul

Whiteman in F3A. Paul having given the doctors the slip for a day to come and compete.

We look forward to our overseas pilot Jeff Boyd returning to our shores to joining us again and show of his new biplane.

The Expert rookies Sean Readett and Michael Smith took on seasoned campaigner David Marriner and showed that you really need to practice.

Michael just pipped Sean with David 3rd. We missed Jeremy Reynolds, Peter Ukhoff and Matthew Cosier.

Advanced fronted as the “seniors” or “dad’s” class with Dean Smith and Peter Readett enjoying a friendly battle. Peter came out on top with his first promo point with a strong 323 average. (305 mark)

Nick Barker didn’t make it through the first round of Sportsman with a plane issue.

A gaggle of F3A’s

With a few pilots missing due to Saturday work commitments, everyone had to fly and judge and with everyone helping the competition ran like clockwork.

Noarlunga club, especially Paul Kumela & Brett Ryan had the field looking exceptional and Paul cooked a mean BBQ enjoyed by all.

The SA Precision Aerobatics group really appreciate that clubs and their members give up their fields for a day for us to compete.

We encourage any new pilots wanting to come and join us and lift the quality of your flying. You don’t need some expensive plane to get started.

other control line model aeroplane!

honour the most popular CL model ever!! Be part of something big and help make history by having

This event is open to all participants worldwide!

On October 5th & 6th, we challenge you to fly any one or more of the many varieties of Ringmasters, old

or new.

Location: South Hummocks MACAny Ringmaster from 1/2A to Giant and all variants in between can be flown.

We will be reporting on how many total Ringmaster flights were made, how many different pilots flew, and how manydifferent Ringmasters flew. If we get a new pilot to solo on a Ringmaster, that first flight will count as 2 flights!

GENERAL BUSINESS

• Instructors Course. A full Instructors course is scheduled to be run at the Holdfast Model Aero Club premises on the 17th August commencing at 9.00am.

Three new aspiring candidates have registered for the course.

• Country Instructors Course. A full instructors course is scheduled to be run in the Barossa Valley on September 21st.

• Promoting MASA. The Vice President gave an overview on promoting MASA and has already recruited seven willing members to the working group. The MASA committee is in full support of the objective and the team is currently working towards putting on a large static display at the upcoming Air Display at RAAF Edinburg on 8/9th November. Volunteers to man the stand will be required during the event so watch this space for an update from the VP. All SA Clubs are invited to provide MASA with their individual club’s promotional handouts for distributed at the event.

• Harry Butler Centennial Air show. The modelling fraternity in SA was well represented at the Minlaton aerodrome as four SA clubs, Barossa, Moonta, South Hummocks and the Scale Society attended the Air Show and provided a Model Flying Display and a Large Static Display of some fifty models. The weather was favourable which enabled Stuart Rasch and Mark Robinson as guest pilots to conduct the model flying display which was well received by an estimated 3000 visiting public. MASA provided chuck gliders as giveaways which proved popular with the children but ran out in no time.

• Safety Matters. Members should be aware that MASA has been advised of slack safety practices at clubs which effectively compromises the MAAA deed of agreement with CASA. As indicated at the national conference in May CASA can and will be conducting random audits (Ramp checks) at model flying fields. MASA has it on good authority that these ramp checks have already commenced in NSW.

• The Skyhawks rep advised the meeting of an issue with the Taranis X8R receiver. After experiencing several crashes with petrol powered models it was eventually established that the X8R receiver is prone to failure when used in petrol engine

Model Aerosport SA Inc. Newsletter august 2019 Edition

18

powered models. Although physical separation between the receiver and the ignition box is recommended, the X8R receiver is still prone to large electrical spikes that are generated by the ignition unit in the process of providing a spark. In essence these radiated spikes have the effect of swamping the front end of the receiver and causing loss of signal from the transmitter.

No safety incidents or accidents to report for this month. • “Safety is not about big brother or the fun police, simply minimising risk to keep

yourself and others free from harm or danger”.
