UN Yemen envoy blasts Huthi rebels’ declared government

Istanbul

Twelve people, most of them children, were

killed on Tuesday when a fire broke out at a school dormitory in the southern Turkish city of Adana, local officials said.

“12 bodies were recovered, 22 wounded people were taken to hospitals,” Adana governor Mahmut Demirtas was quoted as saying by the official news agency Anadolu.

An initial investigation suggested the fire was caused by electrical fault but the flames spread rapidly because of the building’s wooden interior, officials said.

Istanbul

The UN envoy for Yemen criticised yesterday the

decision by Huthi rebels to set up a government in areas they control, calling it a threat to peace efforts in the country.

The announcement by the Iran-backed rebels on Monday “represents a new and concerning obstacle to the peace process and does not serve the interests of the people of Yemen in these difficult times,” Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed said in a statement.

“The Yemeni people have suffered for far too long and their leaders should commit to restore peace and security to their country without further delay,” the envoy said.

A plane carrying a Brazilian football team

late on Monday crashed in the mountains in Colombia, killing an estimated 75 people while six survived, including several players, officials said yesterday.

The LAMIA airlines charter declared an emergency at around 10pm local time Monday (6am yesterday in Bahrain), reporting it had suffered “electrical

failures,” and crashed a short time later near the

city of Medellin, officials said.

The plane was carrying members of Chapecoense Real, a Brazilian football club that had risen from obscurity to reach the Copa Sudamericana finals, which were scheduled today against Atletico Nacional of Colombia.

In all, there were 72 passengers and nine crew on board the British Aerospace 146.

SurvivorsThe civil aviation authority said six of the 81 people on board were known to have survived the crash.

A spokesperson for the authority said goalkeeper Marcos Danilo Padilha, 31, died after being transferred to hospital from the remote site of the crash.

Another player, Helio Hermito Zampier Neto, survived, Colombia’s disaster risk management agency said.Another of the survivors was Alan Ruschel, a 27-year-old defender for the Brazilian team.

Radio Caracol said player Jakson Follmann also survived and was taken to hospitals, along with a flight attendant and a journalist. The sixth known survivor was a member of the flight crew.

‘Electrical failures’The team flew on a commercial flight to Santa Cruz in Bolivia, where they switched to a Lamia charter flight bound for Colombia.

The airport statement said the plane’s crew “declared it had electrical failures.”

It went down about 50km

from Medellin, Colombia’s second largest city, in an area called Cerro Gordo.

The mountainous terrain was some 3,300m above sea level and very difficult to access. Rescuers carrying stretchers had to hike for more than half an hour to reach the site.

On its Twitter account, the airport said a plan to use an air force helicopter had to be shelved because of bad weather in the area.

South American football confederation CONMEBOL said in a statement the match was suspended until further notice. (AFP)

No Gulf Union sans Oman, says MinisterDT News [email protected]

Manama

A senior Bahraini official has denied the media

reports about announcing a Gulf Union without Oman, adding that he was misquoted.

Shura Council and Representatives Council Affairs Minister Ghanim Al Buainain yesterday criticised a couple of regional newspapers for lacking accuracy in reporting his statement on the GCC union.

The Minister affirmed that he had never said the Gulf Union will be formed without Oman’s participation.

Al Buainain clarified that he just said the issue of the GCC Union will figure on the next summit’s agenda, adding that it does not mean in any way that Oman will be omitted from any potential regional union.

The Minister also commended Oman’s stances, emphasising Bahrain’s respect to it and stressing deep-rooted fraternal relations between both the countries.

He underlined Oman’s keenness on carrying out the decisions taken during the GCC summits, which reflects its interest in achieving maximum integration with the brotherly GCC countries.

The minister’s statements

came a few days after several regional dailies, including an English local newspaper, misquoted him saying that the Gulf union will progress and will be discussed in the upcoming GCC summit in Bahrain without the participation of Oman.

The reports had made an international impact as it indirectly states the exclusion of Oman from the GCC.

The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) interior

ministers yesterday held their 35th meeting in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Interior Minister Lt-General Shaikh Rashid bin Abdulla Al Khalifa led Bahrain’s delegation to the session, which was chaired by Saudi Crown Prince, Deputy Premier and Interior Minister Prince Mohammed bin Nayef bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud.

The delegations discussed key issues which focused on strengthening collective security work, protecting stability and preserving achievements and gains.

Prince Mohammed bin Nayef stressed the importance of the Arab Gulf Security 1, which was held recently in Bahrain, describing the joint drill as symbolising deep awareness of common destiny and mounting

challenges. Shaikh Rashid outlined the

pillars of the joint security drill (Arab Gulf Security 1), which was held recently in Bahrain.

The GCC interior ministers were praised for attending the final drill, which, Shaikh Rashid said, represented a major catalyst to enhance performance. The minister hailed GCC keenness on upgrading collective work and holding more drills between different security agencies.

He then stressed the issues which featured on the agenda, focusing mainly on the need to bolster security cooperation so as to confront challenges and stave off dangers.

The Minister invited the GCC interior ministers to attend the 36th meeting, scheduled to be held in Bahrain, which will assume the rotation GCC presidency.

Minister Ghanim Al Buainain criticised some of the dailies for misquoting him

reporting his statement on the GCC union.

Child molestation case adjourned until Dec 14DT News [email protected]

Manama

The case of a child molester, who kidnapped an Asian

toddler in Hoora last August, has been adjourned until December 14.

As reported earlier and according to court files, the child kidnapper reportedly molested the girl.

The man, who is in his thirties, had abducted the child from her mother’s car near a clod-store shop in Hoora when she was left unattended for less than a minute.

The defendant was traced by police officers using public CCTV cameras, and was eventually arrested, following which the whereabouts of the child came to light.

The defendant reportedly caressed the private parts of the child as he asked her to take her clothes off under the pretext that he would massage her body. The statements of the case showed that he had asked her to sit on the front seat of

the car and inserted his hand inside her pants.

“He then took her to his apartment and told her to remove her clothes. The man told his victim that he would massage her, but he also touched her private parts and kissed her,” the prosecutors said based on the child’s narration.

Moreover, the defendant is said to have stolen two mobile phones and an amount of BD30 kept inside the car at the time of kidnapping.

The defendant’s case was heard earlier this month before the High Criminal Court, but he was not brought from his cell. Thus, the hearing was adjourned until November 28 to summon him and now to December 14.

The man has been charged with molestation, kidnapping, robbery and hijacking the vehicle. Additionally, the defendant was charged with assaulting a cop and possessing drugs with the intention to use.

The authorities have taken disciplinary measures

against a Bahrain-based company that posted a job vacancy ad “strictly for non-Bahrainis” recently.

Labour and Social Development Ministry stated on its official Instagram page that “it has been observing what has been circulating on social media networks, regarding a Bahrain-based company that is strictly seeking hiring non-Bahraini employees.”

The ministry added that the company and its details have been identified after monitoring the ad. The authorities are also undertaking necessary procedures against

the consulting agency that allowed this incorrect policy against citizens.

“This is to ensure that

citizens are given the priority in employment, according to the law, and to make sure that such violations are not

repeated,” the ministry stated. The concerned officials in

PET VET

(The views and opinions expressed in this article are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the policy or position of this newspaper.)

Obesity in pet birdsObesity is one of the major health problems in pet animals

as well as in companion birds. What exactly is obesity? Obesity is an imbalance where the energy intake is greater than the energy expenditure. In obese birds there is an abnormal increase of fat in the body’s tissues, usually a weight of 15 percent or more over the optimum. .

Among pet birds, budgies, Galahs, macaws, Amazon parrots, and Quaker parrots are prone to obesity, and to a lesser extent, cockatiels, are also prone to obesity. High-fat diets (seeds, nuts, and many table foods), overabundance of food, and a sedentary lifestyle are all contributing factors of obesity in pet birds.

Clinical signs may not be evident but include lameness, arthritis and respiratory issues from excessive abdominal fat. Obese birds are more prone to arthritis, lipomas (non cancerous fatty tumors), liver disease in the form of fatty liver, exercise intolerance, difficulty in breathing, reproductive problems, atherosclerosis, cardiac disease and shortened life span. The extra weight puts a burden on multiple organs of the body as well as the legs and feet.

In most cases, switching from a seed-based diet to a formulated diet with vegetables will go a long way in slimming down your bird. For larger pet birds, pelleted food should be 65-80% of the diet. Vegetables should make up 15-30%, and the remainder can be seeds and fruits.

Increasing your bird’s opportunities for exercise can help. Purchase a larger cage with multiple food bowls around the cage and/or a play gym. Climbing ladders, playing with toys, and other activities can help remove the excess weight. Use foraging toys so your bird will have to work at getting his food. Consult with your veterinarian to determine if your bird is overweight, and what dietary modifications should be made.

her growing affection for the country and its people. Born in the UK, Gaye Bentham

“I like to create images that evoke emotion and that convey the beauty, mystery and myriad cultures of this amazing world we call home,”

said Gaye“My work continues to evolve; that is the beauty

of photography – there is always something new to learn and so many avenues to explore. For me,

photography is all about making connections – both for myself with the subject matter, and, through my

work, with my audience.”And, the ongoing photography exhibition at the

Another passenger jet has been put at series risk after

it was targeted in a laser attack. The Emirates aircraft

could have been brought down from the sky after it was flying over Hertfordshire when the green laser was directly shone at the plane for at least a couple of seconds.

The attack happened in near The Avenue in Bushey, Watford, at 7.55pm on November 16.

This incident comes after

a British Airways flight was targeted in a laser beam attack as it prepared to land at London’s Heathrow Airport in August.

A Hertfordshire Police spokesman said the Emirates flight was not caused to change its path, but Inspector Peter Edwards, of Hertfordshire Police, added: “This is a very serious offence and could have had very grave consequences.

“We are asking those who

may have information to help us with our investigation to please come forward and speak to us, as you may have vital evidence.”

Experts have warned that lasers can dazzle pilots - and if they are distracted at a critical time, such as during take-off or landing, the result could be disastrous. In April, experts warned that 1,500 planes had been targeted by lasers over the UK in the space of 12 months. (Daily Mail)

The Bahrain Chapter of the Institute of Chartered

Accountants of India, the largest organised professional body of Indians in Bahrain (affiliated to Bahrain Accountants Association) is back with its thought-provoking and career-enhancing a n n u a l conference o n

December 2 and 3. In this context DT News interviewed Vivek Kapoor, the chairperson of the BCICAI, who shared the view that despite the regional challenges faced, non-oil sectors namely tourism, banking and financial services and real estate have been resilient and will continue to contribute

significantly to the overall GDP numbers. Here

are the excerpts from the interview:

What’s your outlook on B a h r a i n Economy in 2017?E c o n o m i s t s & research reports forecast that Bahrain

that of 2016 without much swing and we are hopeful about it.   Bahrain’s economy is dependent primarily on non-oil sectors namely tourism, banking & financial services and real estate.  Despite the regional challenges faced, these sectors have been resilient and continue to contribute significantly to the overall GDP numbers. As per the latest Economic Development Board report the tourism sector is expected to grow at an annual 7.3% and the Government is hoping to increase overseas visitor numbers from 11.6mn last year to 18mn in 2018.  The Banking & financial services industry are strong pillars for the economic development and are poised to grow with considerable number of Capital Intensive Government Infrastructure projects and Private developments lined up in the immediate future. The Real Estate sector has been witnessing significant activities in the past 12 months and several new projects have been launched in the recently concluded BIPEX property exhibition. Developers have been offering a varied range of products & payment plants to attract investors & end users and this is expected to spur up the growth. The Government is continuing with its efforts to bring new investments into Bahrain as well as provide much needed support to the local businesses. This is evident from the improvement in Bahrain’s ranking from 66th to 63rd position in the latest Doing Business 2017 report.

Regarding Value-added Tax (VAT) in GCC, what’s your comments? VAT is likely to be implemented from January 2018. The GCC Finance Ministers & officials have been meeting regularly to arrive at a uniform VAT structure for all the countries and deliberate on the implementation mechanism. Actually VAT is prevailing in some of the Middle East countries like Egypt, Lebanon etc. and it was about time that GCC countries adopted VAT. Like any developing or developed economy the Government depends on tax collections to create diversified revenue streams to support the ever increasing spending on Public services & Infrastructure. VAT will have significant impact on businesses as they will have to revamp their systems and develop a comprehensive record management process. There is still not much information as to which categories of goods & services will be subject to VAT and those which will be subject to Zero percent tax or exempt from tax. The authorities will have to establish the collection & reporting regulations and guidance for the practical implementation of VAT in the coming months so that the necessary VAT infrastructure is in place before January 2018. What is the role of Chartered Accountants in Bahrain Economy?Indian Chartered Accountants (CA’s) have been contributing to the overall development of Bahrain for more than four decades & continue to be an

integral part in its growth story. Bahrain has always provided a fertile ground for us professionals to make optimum use of our knowledge & skills in the advancement of the institutions that we are part of. Our members have been actively involved across all levels of management right from auditors to CFOs, CEOs and Board members in both public & private enterprises and work closely with various stakeholders across the board and strive to build trust & confidence in every aspect of the work. The vast curriculum, the stringent evaluation process and the requirements of practical training that we undergo prepares us to undertake the most challenging assignments and deliver quality results. As advisors to family owned business or as consultants, auditors, risk managers or as members of top management team CAs have been contributing in building a robust system of internal controls, enhanced business practices & build a strong governance culture.

Tell us about the Annual International Conference theme and   its relevance in the current scenario. The theme for the 8th Annual International Conference is “Challenges Create Opportunities”. We gave considerable thought as to what could be a befitting theme under the present economic scenario prevailing in the Middle East in particular & the World economy in general. The geo-political issues which occurred in 2011 and its aftereffects have severely

impacted the MENA region. Lot of efforts to resurrect the situation was undertaken since then and as it appeared that there will be a return to normalcy we were hit once again by the huge fall in oil prices at the end of 2014 and the consequences of the same are still been felt across the Middle eastern countries & other oil dependent economies. Globally there are more grave challenges on account wars being fought, surge in anti-national activities, refugee crisis, rising unemployment, natura l d isas ters , environmental hazards and so on. As a whole there are many challenges that we are facing and we seek solutions to each of these. The Governments of all the countries are actively working towards seeking partnerships with each other and the support of its people to remedy the situation and emerge out of these challenges. As global citizens and professionals we have an important role to play and contribute in all ways possible. The conference will seek to discuss some of the challenges around leadership, the outlook of Bahrain economy for 2017, the opportunities available for entrepreneurs to launch new business and the impact of the proposed Valued Added Tax in GCC. We have lined up experts in the field of taxation, economy, banking & finance and other areas who will share their views and experiences with the delegates over the 2 day conference. Apart of the technical sessions there will be a talk on “The Dynamics of Powerful Decision Making” by Swami Sukhabodhananda.

Japan has begun slaughtering more than 330,000 farm birds

to contain its first outbreaks of a highly contagious strain of avian flu in nearly two years, the government said Tuesday. The planned cull of some 16,500 ducks at a farm in the northern prefecture of Aomori and nearly 320,000 chickens at a farm in central Niigata prefecture, began yesterday.

The World Health Organization warned that

nearly half of all people with HIV around the globe do not know they are infected, and called for broader access to at-home testing kits. The UN health agency said that 40 percent of people with the virus that causes AIDS, or more than 14 million people worldwide, are unaware of their status.

Emma Morano, humanity’s last known survivor of the

19th century, turned 117 in style yesterday, dressing up for the occasion and demanding to know “does my hair look all right?” before having her photograph taken.

The oldest known person alive can hardly see, is very hard of hearing, has been largely bed-bound for the last year and has not left her small second-storey flat in Verbania on the shores of Lake Maggiore in northern Italy for over two decades.

But her doctor, Carlo Bava, said his patient remained alert and continued to have a reasonable quality of life.

Bava said she was very aware of all the fuss being made about her reaching the latest milestone in a remarkable life that began on November 29, 1899.

“She is very lucid, very present,” Bava said.

“She was very happy and honoured to get a telegram of congratulations this morning from President (Sergio) Mattarella.

“There was a television crew

there and she got flowers. She had dressed up and she was very proud. She posed for a photographer and even asked if her hair looked good.

“So I think you can say she is on good form.”

No veggies, thanksMorano has reached a ripe old age despite an extraordinarily tough life, even by the standards of many of her contemporaries, and following a diet that flouts almost every piece of established medical wisdom.

“I eat two eggs a day, and that’s it. And cookies. But I do not eat much because I have no teeth,” she said in an interview last month.

She has long eschewed vegetables and her consumption of fruit is limited to the occasional handful of grapes or snacks of apple puree.

Her prodigious egg habit started when she was diagnosed with anaemia at 20 and a doctor told her to start eating two raw and one cooked every day: a habit she maintained until her appetite began to ebb slightly around

the age of 110.When she

still had teeth, she was also fond of chomping c h i c k e n and lean raw steak.

A l o n g with her fondness for pure protein, she has always had a sweet tooth meaning visitors were usually advised to come bearing gifts of Colomba, a cake rich in egg and butter that Italians associate with Easter, or Pannetone and Pandoro, traditional Christmas treats of a similar ilk.

Very strong characterBut it wasn’t clear if she would be enjoying any of the birthday cake she received on Tuesday.

“The last time I ate a little, but then I did not feel good,” she confided last month.

Bava suspects that Morano has thrived despite her unusual diet, not because of it.

“ I t h i n k her secret is genetic. All of her family lived very a very long time,” the doctor said.

“The diet she has had would have destroyed the liver of most people. But with Emma, I think she could even eaten pebbles and she would still have lived a very long time.

“What might be more important is that she has always had a very strong strong character. It has always been her who decides what she does or doesn’t do.”

M o r a n o herself has attributed her longevity to having the courage to take the life-changing decision of leaving a violent husband in 1938, shortly after the death in infancy of their son, her only child.

It was always an unhappy marriage. Years before, her true love had gone off to fight in World War I and not come back.

Leaving a husband

was no easy thing to do in the Church-dominated Italy of the 1930s and Morano worked in a factory producing jute sacks to support herself. “Back then, the workers in those factories were constantly breathing in dust and yet her lungs are fine -- that’s genetics,” said Bava. (AFP)

You are especially magnetic today. You draw both friends and colleagues to you with your irresistible charm. If you are in sales, expect the orders to come flying in. And as for your social life, it is hopping! Invitations come to you via all avenues. Your voice mail, e-mail and mailbox are filled to the brim with invitations.

It is an especially harmonious and congenial day today. Meetings and projects at work seem to go off without a hitch. And ditto in your personal life. Get-togethers with friends or loved ones come right from a painting by Norman Rockwell. Everyone feels loved and well-connected. If only every day were this way!

All your senses are aroused today. Tonight when you return home you are likely to surround yourself with warmth, scent, a fabulous meal and a beautiful bouquet of flowers. You feel content and blessed, and look at your partner with loving eyes. Why not put on some music, dress in your most opulent clothing and invite your mate to join you for a dance? With the current celestial atmosphere, you are feeling the urge to spruce up your surroundings. But there’s no need to make a major financial investment. There’s plenty you can do simply with creative arrangements of paintings, plants and flowers. Candlelight does wonders to soften a room and make everything glow.

Your creative side is eager to be set free! Perhaps it is time to get out that old set of paints, or to dust off your writing journals. Consider taking some time today to visit a museum or craft show. What you see there is likely to fire your imagination and inspiration. Don’t hold back any longer. What are you waiting for?

You have been working long and hard for some time now. And it looks as though you are about to be rewarded for your efforts. If you do not receive a promotion or raise today, expect one in the near future. If one is not immediately forthcoming, go ahead and ask for it. You have earned it, and have the proof to back up your request.

Your creativity and inspiration are firing on all cylinders today. Why not give them free reign? If you pull out the paints and paper you may be surprised at just how talented you really are. There is a warm, passionate feeling in the air. Why not paint an erotic picture for your partner, or even better have him or her pose for one!

Your extrasensory abilities are heightened today, giving you insight into yourself and those around you. It is almost a scary experience, as you may feel that you are privy to private information. Take note of what you pick up on today. You have unique insight into human relationships. Perhaps you could write an article or illustrate in some way the complexities of social interactions.

Some quiet time alone will do you a world of good today. There is a lot going on in your life right now. If you stop the world and get off, just for a few hours, you are likely to reenter the fray refreshed. Your love life may be heating up. Don’t hesitate to put the brakes on if things are moving too quickly. Rather than listening to what your partner says, watch what he or she does.

Don’t let your voice mail pick up your phone today. You are likely to get a call from a long-lost friend. What a boost this will bring to your day! Hope that the call comes late in the day, because once it occurs you will not be able to get any more work done. You are likely to receive good news, which will have you flying high. Enjoy this great day!

All your efforts both on the job and in your personal relationships pay off in a big way today. At work, you are likely to receive a bonus or some other satisfying recognition of a job well done. At home, friends and family express their gratitude for all you’ve done for them. You bask in the warm glow of a life lived openly and with integrity. You deserve all the rewards that are coming your way.You are likely to turn heads today as you walk down the street. Your mind and your body are in peak form today. Though it’s not likely your mind that is drawing all those admiring glances. Your partner is likely to be jealous, but don’t let that stop you from strutting-just a bit. Have fun, flirt, but don’t let it get out of hand.

Women enter Indian shrine after legal battle

The Somali student who wounded 11 people in a car-ramming and knife attack on an Ohio univer-sity campus was a “soldier” of the Islamic State group.

Thailand’s cabinet submit-ted the name of Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn to the nation’s parliament, paving the way for his endorsement as king.

Michigan on Monday declared President-elect Donald Trump the winner over Hillary Clinton in its razor-thin contest.

Dozens of women entered the inner sanctum of a his-toric mosque in India after winning a bitter legal battle for a ban on female wor-shippers to be lifted.

A public television station in Morocco apologised

again on Monday after uproar on social media followed its broadcast of an item on makeup to hide the bruises of battered women.

The sequence -- marking last week’s  International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women -- was transmitted by 2M on the morning magazine programme “Sabahiyate” to “show the type of makeup to use when a woman has been hit”.

It depicted a woman with a swollen face, with the presenter telling viewers that she was not really injured, but that these were just “cinematic effects”.

“Green is applied with a brush to camouflage the

reddish part”, followed by “an orange corrector then yellow, then a foundation”, she said.

She added that the aim was to “provide solutions to women who need such advice so they can continue with their daily

lives and go to work”.Last Wednesday’s broadcast

initially passed unnoticed, but after it was posted on the channel’s website, by Friday it had provoked a storm of reaction on social media and

was then removed.“So 2M has decided to

celebrate the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women with anti-bruise makeup!” was one comment.

Another social media user noted: “Ladies, 2M has the solution if you get punched in the face by your husband, father or brother.”

“Black eye? Bruising? No problem! 2M’s makeup artist has a miracle product!” wrote yet another.

The channel’s management issued a statement on Friday calling the broadcast sequence “completely inappropriate”, and offered its “most sincere apologies for this error, given the sensitivity and seriousness of the subject”.

On Monday, in a video posted on Facebook, 2M again said it was sorry.

“We have always put women at the centre of our debates and have taken the defence of their rights to heart,” it said.

“We apologise for broadcasting the makeup segment, the result of an error of judgment on our part, and beg your indulgence and understanding.”

Also Monday, in a commentary on worldwide efforts during 2016 to stem violence against women, Human Rights Watch acting women’s rights division director Janet Walsh wrote that Morocco was “still discussing a draft domestic violence law”. (AFP)

Havana

Hundreds of thousands of Cubans swarmed

Havana’s Revolution Square for a tearful tribute to Fidel Castro on Monday while his brother, Raul, led a private ceremony in front of the late communist icon’s ashes.

A weeklong farewell to Castro began with long lines of mourners streaming past a black-and-white picture of “El Comandante” as a young, black-bearded revolutionary carrying a rifle.

The crowd walked by silently, some took pictures with their phones and others sobbed uncontrollably as they looked up at the portrait flanked by white roses inside the monument to independence hero Jose Marti.

Many were dressed in state uniforms -- school children, soldiers, veterans, doctors and customs officers -- and the line continued as night fell.

Seven Indian soldiers were killed after militants

disguised as policemen stormed a major army base near the frontier with Pakistan Tuesday, as tensions between the two neighbours ran high after weeks of cross-border firing.

Four suspected militants were also killed in the stand-off with security forces inside the command centre in northern Jammu and Kashmir state that lasted most of the day.

It was the most audacious attack on an Indian military base since September, when 19 soldiers were killed in an assault that India blamed on

Pakistan-based militants.The army in a statement

said four of its soldiers were killed in the initial assault after heavily armed militants wearing police uniforms stormed the base early Tuesday firing small arms and hurling grenades.

Three army men were killed in a rescue operation after the militants took 16 people hostage inside two buildings used by the families of the army officers. Two women and children were among the hostages, the army said.

“In this rescue attempt one more officer and two jawans sacrificed their lives,” it added

Three bodies of the attackers have been recovered

and operation to sanitise the complex continues, the statement said.

One of the dead soldier was a major while the rank of another officer remained unclear.

Earlier a senior local police officer said all four militants were killed in the counter-attack by security forces.

The base is one of four command centres in the restive region and home to over 1,000 officers.

The attack came as Pakistan’s hugely popular military chief General Raheel Sharif handed over to his successor on Tuesday with a warning to India not to mistake his country’s

“restraint” for weakness. It also comes days before

a scheduled visit to India by Pakistan’s foreign affairs advisor Sartaj Aziz for a weekend conference on Afghanistan.

“It clearly suggests there is an attempt by certain groups to sabotage the apparent peace outreach by Pakistan’s government,” said Mohan Guruswamy, head of the Centre for Policy Alternatives think-tank in New Delhi.

Separately, Indian authorities said three militants were killed in a shoot-out with security forces after crossing into Jammu and Kashmir from Pakistan. (AFP)

Traveling on the doomed airliner that crashed

in Colombia overnight were the players and staff of a Brazilian football club about to complete a fairytale journey from unknowns to would-be South American champions.

The LAMIA charter plane went down near Medellin late Monday with 81 people aboard and so far only six are reported to have survived. At least two were said by officials to be football players.

For the Chapecoense Real team the disaster means the cruel end of a story that had been meant to climax with an unexpected chance for glory on Wednesday against Colombia’s Atletico Nacional in the first leg of the Copa Sudamericana final.

“The pain is terrible. Just as we had made it, I will not say to the top, but to have national prominence, a tragedy like this happens. It is very difficult, a very great tragedy,” club vice-president Ivan Tozzo told SporTV.

Only a few years ago Chapecoense was just

another a gritty outfit in the Brazilian lower leagues, where players, unable to afford cars, took the bus to training. The stadium in Chapeco, a city of 200,000 people in the southern Santa Catarina state, didn’t have a gym.

The steep climb from minnow to contender started in 2009 when Chapecoense entered the fourth division. Back then, the team’s top goalscorer Bruno Rangel told Brazilian newspaper Lance, even the club’s bus was “was very old.”

“But a lot has changed in the club since I arrived,” he said. “There are still prejudices against the club but more because we’re from the (country’s) interior. That’s diminishing, it’s true. Every day we’re more respected.”

By 2014 the club had fought its way into the lower half of the elite table, but the side wanted more. Even at this point Chapecoense was almost ignored by its own public, with only about 7,000 people turning up to home games, according to Globoesporte website. (AFP)

Chapecoense entered the running for the

Copa Sudamericana for the first time in 2015 and didn’t disappoint.

In the club’s first ever international tournament, the one-time unknowns didn’t go all the way, but they performed bravely, even defeating Argentina’s famed River Plate club.

This year, things seemed to be going wrong. The coach credited with Chapecoense’s miraculous rise, Guto

Ferreira, walked out and his replacement Caio Junior lost his first game against the lowly Cuiaba.

But the little team that could roared back, taking down Argentina’s Independiente and Junior de Barranquilla. They were going to the final to meet the reigning Copa Libertadores champions Atletico Nacional and no one would write them off anymore.

On the way to Colombia, the team stopped off in Sao

Paulo to play the penultimate game of Brazil’s domestic league. Here they lost against Palmeiras, the team which ended the season as Brazilian champion. But there was a sense that the players had their minds on the bigger challenge awaiting them against Atletico.

“I see this is a group of winners. It’s as if God has put us precisely here today to taste this and to appreciate even more the challenge on Wednesday,” the coach said

after the Sao Paulo game. Now their dreams have

met a devastating end and on Wednesday at what would have been an intriguing first leg of the Copa Sudamericana final there’ll be only silence.

Back in Chapeco, the stadium was opened up to greet grieving families and fans. “We’re all here at the stadium to help the people connected,” said Tozzo.

“It hasn’t really sunk in yet. We have to trust in God. Out team must carry on,” he said.

P23 Cruel ending to a dream journey

Chernova loses2011 world title

Lausanne

Russian heptathlete Tatyana Chernova was banned by the

Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) yesterday for doping and stripped of her 2011 world title, effectively handing the crown to Jessica Ennis-Hill.

Chernova’s gold medal from the world championships in Daegu, South Korea is now set to be awarded to the Briton Ennis-Hill, the 2012 London Olympic champion and silver medallist at this year’s Rio Games.

CAS banned Chernova, 28, for three years and eight months, with all her results over a two-year period from the world championships in

2011 now void. Ennis-Hill, who won world gold in her own right in 2009 and 2015, has long called for the 2011 title to go to her after Chernova had a sample from the 2009 world championships retested later to reveal an anabolic steroid.

Chernova, just the latest Russian athlete punished for doping, would not have been eligible to compete in South Korea if her positive test had been discovered at the time.

Soon after the CAS statement came out, Ennis-Hill posted a message on Instagram alongside a picture of her and a celebrating Chernova in Daegu. “This image was forever imprinted in my mind! However much it drove me on for

what I was about to achieve at my first Olympics in London, in my heart I just knew it was wrong,” Ennis-Hill wrote. “So happy to finally be receiving my gold medal. Triple World Champion WOW.”

Ennis-Hill, the 2012 Olympic champion, won her other heptathlon world golds at Berlin in 2009 and Beijing last year.

As well as losing her 2011 world title Chernova has also been deprived of her 2012 Olympic bronze, with Lithuania’s Austra Skujyte set to inherit third.

CAS issued bans for Russian middle distance runners Ekaterina Sharmina (three years) and Kristina Ugarova (two years). (AFP)
