Talks to ease tensionsSaudi Arabia confirms negotiations with Iran remain in ‘exploratory phase’

Riyadh

Saudi Arabia’s foreign minis-ter Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud said yesterday that

talks between the Kingdom and Iran remain in the “exploratory phase”.

“The fourth round of talks took place on September 21. These discussions remain in the exploratory phase. We hope they lay the foundation to ad-dress the issues between the two sides and we will work to achieve that,” Prince Faisal said in a joint press conference with EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell. Prince Faisal did not give the location of the meet-ing. The date coincides with a speech by Raisi at the UN Gener-al Assembly in New York.

Borrell also said he hoped nuclear talks between global powers and Iran would restart in Vienna “soon”.

The EU diplomat, who is in Riyadh following visits to Qatar and the UAE, said he briefed his partners on the prospects for restarting nuclear talks and ex-changed views with Saudi offi-cials on Yemen and Afghanistan.

Iran’s foreign ministry spokes-man Saeed Khatibzadeh said last month that talks between Tehran and Riyadh achieved “serious progress” on the issue of Gulf security.

Saudi Arabia and Iran began talks in April in an effort to con-tain tensions between them. Iraq’s president had said Bagh-dad hosted the talks.

Saudi Arabia and its Gulf allies have long criticised Iran for its malign activities in the region through its network of proxies in Yemen, Syria and Iraq.

Borrell said that he addressed the Yemeni situation during his

visit to Riyadh.

‘Not very encouraging’Meanwhile, Borrell said yes-

terday the Taliban government’s behaviour up to now was “not very encouraging”, and any eco-nomic collapse in Afghanistan would raise the risk of terrorism and other threats.

The EU has increased its hu-manitarian aid to Afghanistan since the Taliban took power, but halted development assis-tance – a move also taken by other countries and the World Bank.

“Certainly it’s a dilemma. Be-

cause if you want to contribute to avoid the collapse of an econ-omy, in a certain way, you can consider supporting the gov-ernment ... Depending on their behaviour. And their behaviour until now is not very encourag-ing,” Borrell said.

“If the economy collapses, then the humanitarian situation will be much worse. The tension for people to leave the country will be bigger, the threats the terrorist threat will be bigger and so the risks emanating from Afghanistan affecting the in-ternational community will be bigger,” he added.

BIA reaches milestone in quest for carbon neutrality

TDT | Manama

Bahrain International Air-port (BIA) has reached a

significant milestone in its journey towards becoming a carbon-neutral facility, meet-ing all requirements to up-grade to Level 3 ‘Optimisation’, as stipulated by the Airports Council International (ACI) Airport Carbon Accreditation program.

Bahrain Airport Company (BAC) held a ceremony rec-ognising airport stakeholders and the Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) team for their commitment and contri-butions towards this achieve-ment.

The programme is the only institutionally-endorsed car-bon management certification standard for airports and rec-ognises facilities that success-fully manage and reduce their carbon footprints.

The programme has four increasingly stringent levels of accreditation, Mapping, Reduction, Optimisation, and Neutrality.

To achieve Level 3 certifi-cation, airports must fulfill all Level 1 and 2 requirements.

BAC Chief Executive Officer Mohamed Yousif Al Binfalah, who handed out certificates of appreciation at the ceremony, said: “I would like to thank our HSE team and stakeholders for their dedicated efforts and im-portant contributions towards this milestone achievement.”

“BAC is committed to operat-

ing BIA as an environmentally friendly and operationally effi-cient airport,” he added.

“ACI recently launched a long-term carbon goal study for global airports to reach net-zero carbon emission by 2050. We will continue par-ticipating in the ACI Airport Carbon Accreditation program and working on initiatives with our partners to further reduce the airport’s carbon emissions and achieve the tar-geted reductions in our Car-bon Management Plan.

“We look forward to further-ing minimising BIA’s environ-mental impact at the new Pas-senger Terminal, which was designed with sustainability in mind.

“The boutique building is more energy efficient than the legacy facility and is Leader-ship in Energy & Environ-mental Design (LEED) Gold certified, a globally recog-nised symbol of sustainability achievement.”

“With the continued sup-port of our employees, part-ners, and stakeholders, I am confident that we can help to deliver the sustainable de-velopment goals outlined in Bahrain’s Economic Vision 2030.”

At Level 3, airports are re-quired to engage third parties in carbon footprint manage-ment, including airlines and service providers such as in-dependent ground handlers, catering companies, air traffic control, and others working on the airport site.

Enough time for Filipinos to register for overseas voting

• Registration is extended from October 1 to 14

TDT | Manama

Bahrain-based Filipinos will still be able to cast their

ballots in the 2022 Philippine national elections despite the likelihood of prolonged coro-navirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

In fact, they can vote ahead of the larger population at home thru Overseas Absentee Vot-ing (OAV). Their 30-day voting period will run from April 10 to May 9, 2022.

So the Philippine Embassy in the Kingdom is calling on Filipinos who have not yet reg-istered through overseas vot-ing to personally appear at its premises located in Mahooz for biometrics capturing, and bring along a photocopy of valid Phil-ippine passport or copy of sea-man’s book for seafarers.

They are advised to partic-

ipate in their home country’s political affairs by beating the new deadline to register.

Last week, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) in Manila, in an en banc session, unanimously approved the ex-tension of the deadline for local and overseas voting registra-tion. The deadline of registra-tion for both was initially set for September 30.

Registration period in the Philippines will now be from October 11 to 30.

On the other hand, registra-tion abroad is extended from October 1 to 14.

Those interested in the over-seas voting registration should contact the embassy for de-tails on how to proceed. More details can also be found on the embassy’s official website: https://manamape.dfa.gov.ph/

The next Philippine gener-al elections – set to take place on May 9, 2022 – will select the successor of current Pres-ident Rodrigo Duterte, as well as vice-president, 12 senators and a party-list representative.

Bhavans Bahrain Indian School celebrates Gandhi JayantiTDT | Manama

Mahatma Gandhi is the symbol of peace and truth. He was a social reformist,

leader of Indian independence movement and propagator of truth, peace and non-vi-olence.

In accordance with the significance of Gandhi Jayanti, Bhavans Bahrain Indian School celebrated the day in an efficacious way through myriad activities with the goal to encourage students to follow the path of truth and non-violence.

History was relived and biography of Mahatma Gandhi was reiterated as stu-dents were engaged in various activities like drawing family tree, framing timeline

with important events, discussion on books written on Gandhiji, quiz on his life, writing book review on the famous book “My Ex-

periments With Truth”, and a powerpoint presentation on statues and streets named after Gandhiji around the world.

The activities yielded great learning for the students and added to their knowledge base.

A special assembly by Grade IV students was a value addition.

Students presented a speech on Gandhiji, sang the famous bhajan- ‘Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram’ and showcased different move-ments as led by Gandhiji.

Directors Himanshu Verma and Ritu Verma and Principal Saji Jacob applauded and appreciated the efforts of the students and guided them to follow the principles of Gandhiji for a successful life ahead.

For love of countryFilipino-American Navy officer stationed at US Navy Central

Command base in Bahrain ‘saves’ Philippine flag in Afghanistan

• Prevents Taliban from unceremoniously taking it down, if not totally destroyed, during takeover of Kabul airport

Manama

Talk about patriotism, a Filipino-American sol-dier from US Navy gal-

lantly “saved” a Philippine flag from being taken down, if not totally destroyed, by the Taliban forces in Kabul airport during their takeover two months ago.

US Naval Officer Lieutenant Commander Emiliano C. Rabor, who is currently stationed as Deputy Director Medical Plan-ner of Task Force 51/5 with headquarters at the US Navy Central Command (NAVCENT) base in the Kingdom of Bahrain, handed over the flag to former Philippine Ambassador to Bah-rain Alfonso A. Ver.

A short but meaningful cere-mony for its turnover was held at the residence of Lt. Cmdr. Rabor during a farewell recep-tion he and his wife, Fil-Am Lory Evanoso Edera-Rabor, hosted in honour of Ambassa-dor Ver who left Bahrain at the conclusion his tour of duty on 30 September.

Lt. Cmdr. Rabor, who like his wife is orginally from Bu-tuan City in Mindanao, south of the Philippines, retrieved the flag at the Hamad Karzai International Airport (HKIA) in Afghanistan in August as hun-dreds tried to flee the Taliban who were poised to overrun the capital Kabul and take over

the airport.Lt. Cmdr. Rabor, fondly called

“Em” by his friends and fellow Filipinos in Bahrain, grew up in the Philippines before mi-grating to the US where he later joined the US Navy.

He was part of the US mili-tary contingent tasked to secure the HKIA to oversee the with-drawal of American citizens, Afghans and other nationals from the onslaught of the Is-lamic State-Khorasan Group (ISIS-K) who were threatening the airport with rocket fire and mobile explosives.

During the operation, Lt. Cmdr. Rabor saw the Philip-pine flag prominently at the airport, which he felt was most likely displayed to represent the hundreds of Filipinos who had worked in Afghanistan since the start of the 20-year US-led coalition.

He knew of the dedication and resilience of the Filipinos who were widely admired by the US and coalition forces. He was sure that the flag would be unceremoniously taken down, if not totally destroyed, once the Taliban arrive, which was an

eventuality that he would not, by any means, allow to happen.

Upon finishing his mission in Afghanistan and returning to base in Bahrain, Lt. Cmdr. Ra-bor decided to turn over the flag to Ambassador Ver and hoped that the diplomat would be able to find the Filipino workers who originally displayed the flag at the HKIA.

Ambassador Ver praised the action of Lt. Cmdr. Rabor in “saving” the flag and vowed to locate the whereabouts of the workers and return the Phil-ippine flag to them who had ably and honestly represented their home country in Afghan-istan from 2011 until they had to leave 20 years later.

unique projects to mark the World Space Week this month.

The event, which will start today and run until October 10, is observed an-nually across the globe to highlight the contributions of space science and tech-nology towards uplifting the human condition. This year celebrates women in space.

Bahrain takes part in this international event through the National Space Science Agency (NSSA), the King-dom’s flagship team dedi-cated to promoting space education and fostering public interest in space pursuits.

Maryam Al Mulla, head of Resources and Servic-es at the NSSA, said: “The NSSA is keen to spread scientific culture among different groups, and it is making great efforts to urge young people to participate in its activities that extend throughout the year, but the Space Week always attains distinct attention.”

First, the annual hacka-thon Space Apps Challenge took place from Friday until yesterday.

It marked NSSA’s official partnership with NASA or the National Aeronautics and Space Administration – the US arm for space science and technology. The NSSA holds the distinction of be-ing the only regional space agency to partner with NASA on this Challenge.

Second, the Digital Space Career Awareness Booklet, created as a fun and friend-ly guide for young people, will be available on the NSSA website for youth and uni-versity students to down-load. The booklet offers information, insights and inspiration on space and STEM careers in general.

‘Smile’ pavilion to spread childhood cancer awareness successful

TDT | Manama

The “Smile” initiative pavil-ion to spread awareness

of childhood cancer has been launched successfully.

More than 7,000 people visit-ed the pavilion during the three-day event held at The Avenues Mall.

Volunteers of the “Smile” pro-ject, among them a number of students from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland-Medi-cal University of Bahrain (RCSI Bahrain), supervised the pavil-ion from 10am until 10pm.

They distributed awareness

brochures that included infor-mation about childhood cancer, its symptoms and how to pre-vent it, in addition to introduc-ing the goals, programmes and activities of the initiative and its efforts to spread awareness of childhood cancer, especially in September, the International Month for Awareness of this disease.

A large number of pavil-ion-goers bought the gold rib-bon, which symbolises sympa-thy with children with cancer and support for their cause. The proceeds from this year’s tape sales are allocated by the “Smile” initiative to the Abdul-

lah Kanoo unit at Salmaniya Hospital.

The organisation of this pa-vilion comes within the frame-work of the activities of the “Our Children are Gold 8” campaign, which was launched by the “Smile” initiative in early Sep-tember, and through which it works to spread awareness of childhood cancer among vari-ous segments of society, includ-ing individuals, institutions and all parties.

The head of the Future Youth Association, to which the “Smile” initiative is affiliated, Sabah Abdul Rahman Al Zayani, expressed the initiative’s pride

in the unparalleled public turn-out witnessed by its pavilion in the Avenues, which proves its success in reaching a large number of different segments of society, and enhancing their awareness of children’s cancer.

Al Zayani expressed his thanks to The Avenues Mall and the facilities it provided that contributed to the success of this platform.

The organisation of this pa-vilion in the Avenues came just one week after the “Smile” in-itiative held a similar pavilion at the City Centre Mall. More than 5,000 people visited the pavilion.

GIB partners with second annual mentorship forum in Middle East

TDT | Manama

Mentorship Forum Middle East (MFME) 2021 an-

nounced Gulf International Bank (GIB) as a partner for its second annual forum taking place as a hybrid event (on-site and virtual) in the Kingdom of Bahrain on 11 November at the Gulf Hotel.

As a forum partner, GIB sup-ports regional initiatives that help raise awareness about mentorship to accelerate ca-reer progression and profes-sional growth for the next gen-eration of business leaders in Bahrain and across the Middle East.

MFME 2021 will focus on the importance of “Prioritising Mentorship in a New World”.

Given the talent develop-ment challenges businesses face as a result of COVID-19, the forum will look at how mentorship can play a role in ensuring the organisations’ talent development goals get back on track in today’s new working environment where in person, on-the-job-learning from peers and senior leaders have been severely curtailed.

Abdulaziz Al Helaissi, GIB’s Group Chief Executive Officer, said: “We are delighted to sup-port the 2nd Annual Mentor-ship Forum Middle East. As a talent-driven financial organi-sation, we continue to be com-mitted to train and develop our employees. Mentorship has proven to be a very effective way to help younger profes-sionals gain exposure and fast track their learning and career progression. At GIB, we have

seen the benefits first-hand and look forward to be part of this forum and share GIB’s experience.”

Zahraa Taher, Managing Di-rector of FinMark Communi-cations, the forum’s founder and organiser, said: “We are proud to announce GIB as a partner for this year’s forum. Having taken part in the in-augural event, GIB’s vote of confidence in the forum and the importance of mentorship is particularly gratifying. We look forward to working close-ly with GIB to maximise their use of mentorship internally as another key training and development tool.”

The forum is expected to attract strong participation from the leading regional and international speakers and at-tendees.

The inaugural event in 2019 saw more than 250 senior HR and mentorship practition-ers as well as C-suite leaders take part. Similar numbers are expected to attend this year’s forum, both virtually and in person, arranged in line with the government’s current reg-ulations for events.

The event will be highly in-teractive and feature a series of keynote addresses, panel discussions and workshops to promote knowledge sharing and hands-on-learning.

A key aim of the forum is to provide the attending HR managers and decision makers with practical insight and tips on how to evaluate effective mentorship schemes and de-velop tailored internal pro-grammes to meet their goals.

Most stock markets in the Gulf closed lower yes-

terday, with the Saudi index ending five sessions of gains, although the Abu Dhabi index bucked the trend to finish high-er.

Saudi Arabia’s benchmark index dropped 0.4%, weighed down by a 3.3% fall in Saudi Telecom Company (STC).

The Public Investment Fund, Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund, is considering selling part of its 70% stake in STC while retaining majority ownership, the state fund said on Thursday.

In Abu Dhabi, the index gained 0.3%, with the country’s largest lender First Abu Dhabi Bank rising 1.2%.

Elsewhere, shares of ADNOC Drilling jumped more than

28% as the unit of Abu Dhabi oil giant ADNOC started trading on Sunday after its $1.1 billion initial public offering (IPO), the largest ever on the Abu Dhabi stock market.

Gulf oil giants ADNOC and Sau-di Aramco to raise cash from outside investors as they try to diversify sources of income in their oil-dependent economies.

Dubai’s main share index fell 0.4%, dragged down by a 2% slide in blue-chip developer Emaar Properties and a 2.1% decline in Emaar Development.

Dubai ports giant DP World sees no early end to disruptions in global supply chains that have set off delays at ports and logistics hubs around the world, its chairman said on Friday.

News in brief u Jordan’s King Abdullah received a phone call from Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, the royal palace said yesterday in what officials said was the first such communication since the start of the conflict in Syria a decade ago. “They discussed relations between the two brotherly countries and ways of enhancing cooperation,” the Jordanian palace statement said. King Abdullah told Assad his country supported the territorial integrity of its northern neighbour and efforts to preserve its “stability and sovereignty”, the palace statement said. Amman also last week fully reopened a border crossing with Syria to boost investment and trade and said it would resume direct flights to Syria by its state owned carrier Royal Jordanian for the first since they were suspended shortly after the outset of the conflict.

u Groups of foreign fighters have left Libya and authorities are looking for ways to get more to leave the

country, Libyan Foreign Minister Najla Mangoush said yesterday. “We are still seeking a larger and comprehensive organisation for the exit of mercenaries, and this is what we are seeking at the Libya Stability Conference which will be held this month,” Mangoush told a news conference in Kuwait. The head of Libya’s presidency council said last month the conference would aim to ensure “unified, consistent” international support and restore a sense of Libyan leadership and ownership over the country’s future.

u A small private plane crashed into an empty building on the outskirts of Milan, northern Italy, on Sunday, killing all eight people onboard, police said. The plane, which took off from Milan’s Linate city airport, was headed for the island of Sardinia, officials said. The crash occurred just outside a suburban metro station. People in the area could hear a blast when the plane collided with the two-story building, which was empty at the time as it was being renovated.

u Several civilians were killed in an explosion in Afghanistan’s capital city Kabul yesterday, Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid said on Twitter. The blast was near the entrance of the Eidgah mosque in Kabul, Mujahid said. The details behind the explosion were not immediately clear and Mujahid did not say exactly how many had died or were injured.

The blast occurred on the main road just outside the Eidgah mosque where a prayer ceremony of for Mujahid’s mother was underway, a Taliban source told Reuters. “All of the victims are civilians,” the source said, adding that there was no information on the exact number of casualties. Another Taliban official told Reuters at least two civilians were killed and three were wounded in the blast.

27 September-Commemoration Day in the Republic of Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan commemorates with

deep respect and esteem the memory

of all our Martyrs who died for the

independence, sovereignty, and

territorial integrity of Azerbaijan on

September 27, which is celebrated as the

Commemoration Day.

According to the Order of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev dated December 2, 2020, as a sign of deep respect for Azerbaijani soldiers and officers, all martyrs, who fought heroically

in the Patriotic War, sacrificed their lives for the territorial integrity of the Republic of Azerbaijan, September 27 will be marked as the Day of Commem-oration every year.

The Republic of Azerbaijan liberated motherland not through negotiations, not as a result of any concession made by Armenia, but by shedding blood, losing martyrs, demonstrating self-sacrifice on the battlefield, restoring our territorial integrity and our national dignity.

Armenia, for about 30 years, kept under occupation almost 20 percent of the territory of our country. The occupation was accompanied with notori-ous war crimes and crimes against humanity. Ethnic cleansing carried out by Armenia resulted in more than one million Azerbaijanis becoming refugees and internally displaced persons.

The UN Security Council adopted four resolutions in 1993 demanding im-mediate, complete, and unconditional withdrawal of armed forces of Armenia from Azerbaijan’s occupied territories.

Throughout the conflict, Armenia with its attitude and actions demonstrated that its sole aim was to maintain the status-quo and consolidate the occupation. On many occasions Azerbaijan raised the necessity of imposing sanctions on Armenia. Regretfully, there was no international sanction imposed on Armenia to enforce the implementation of the UN Security Council resolutions.

In July 2020, Armenia perpetrated military provocation along the state border with Azerbaijan. As a result of the ar-tillery strike inflicted on Azerbaijan’s Tovuz district, 13 military servicemen and civilians were killed.

On the 27th September last year, Armenia launched a large-scale attack against military positions and civilians of Azerbaijan. In re-sponse, Azerbaijan, using its inherent right of self-defense as enshrined in the article 51 of the UN Charter, started a counter-attack on its own territories against Armenia.

During 44-day war Azerbaijan liberated a large part of occupied territories, including cities of Jabrayil, Hadrut, Fuzuli, Zangilan, Gubadli and Shusha. In total more than 300 cities and villages were liberated on the battle-field. Armenia had to sign an act of capitulation on 10 November 2020. Accordingly, Armenia was obliged to withdraw its troops from the remaining part of Azerbaijan’s territories, namely Aghdam, Lachin and Kalbajar regions. Azerbaijan, itself, enforced the implementation of the abovementioned UN Security Council resolutions, probably, it was the first case in the world since the establishment of the UN.

Azerbaijan resolved the 30-year-long conflict and restored its territorial integrity and historical justice by military-political means. The Nagorno-Kara-bakh conflict was left in the past. There is no administrative territorial unit called Nagorno-Karabakh in Azerbaijan. The Republic of Azerbaijan has created Karabakh and Eastern Zangazur economic zones by the Presidential decree signed on 7 July this year. Using this occasion, we would like to call on all the international community to avoid using legally non-existing, politically biased and manipulative names while referring to our territories.

During visits to liberated territories, foreign diplomats, representatives of international organizations and international journalists have witnessed the barbarism committed by Armenia. The facts of the full destruction of cities and villages, including the cultural and religious heritage sites of Azerbaijani people has been widely documented and broadcasted by international media and independent experts.

Out of 67 mosques in the territories which were under Armenian occupa-tion, 65 have been razed to the ground and the remaining 2 have been severely damaged and desecrated, including by being used as stables for pigs and cows in total disrespect to all Muslims of the world. Even the graveyards were des-ecrated, destroyed, and looted.

As the conflict is over, Azerbaijan has already announced its readiness to embark upon the border delimitation and demarcation between Azerbaijan and Armenia, and to start negotiations on peace agreement with Armenia, based on mutual recognition of sovereignty and territorial integrity of each other. Such an agreement would turn our region into the region of peace and cooperation. The people of Azerbaijan celebrate the first anniversary of the Patriotic War, written in golden letters in the history of Azerbaijan. During this war, in the struggle for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of our country, which is our work of truth and honor, our people united around President, Supreme Commander-in-Chief Ilham Aliyev, demonstrated determination, will and unity, dealt heavy blows to the enemy and forced him to surrender.

Azerbaijan commemorates with deep respect and esteem the memory of all our Martyrs who died for the independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of Azerbaijan on September 27, which is celebrated as the Com-memoration Day.

Cyclone Shaheen approaches Oman, three killed, flights delayed

Reuters | Dubai

Tropical Cyclone Shaheen bore down on Oman yes-

terday, killing at least three people, and authorities urged residents to evacuate coastal areas and delayed flights to and from the capital, Muscat.

A child who had been swept away by water was found dead, the state news agency said, and another person was miss-ing. Two Asian workers were killed when a hill collapsed on their housing area in an in-dustrial zone as a result of the cyclone, the state news agency reported.

The eye of the storm was about 60 km (40 miles) from Muscat and it was carrying top winds of 120 kph (75 mph) or more, a joint statement by the country’s hazard, weather and civil aviation agencies said.

The storm’s centre was ex-pected to hit land during the

late afternoon and evening, bringing very high winds and heavy rainfall, but the outer bands of the system were al-ready being felt.

The national emergency committee said the power sup-ply would be cut in al-Qurm, east of the capital, to avoid ac-cidents. More than 2,700 peo-ple were put up in emergency shelters.

Most of the oil-exporting country’s five million people live in and around Muscat. Roads in the capital would be open only to vehicles on emergency and humanitarian journeys until the storm dies down, authorities said.

In the United Arab Emirates, authorities said precautionary measures were being taken. Police officials were moving to ensure safety by conducting security patrols near beaches and valleys where torrential rains were expected.

Duterte says daughter running for president in 2022 elections• Sara Duterte-Carpio is currently mayor of Davao

• Duterte’s political party has yet to officially nominate its presidential candidate

• Duterte, 76, said on Saturday he was retiring from politics

• Candidates have until Oct. 8 to register, but withdrawals and substitutions are allowed until Nov. 15, leaving scope for last-minute changes of heart.

Reuters | Manila

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte’s daughter will run for president in the 2022 elec-

tion and her father’s long-time aide, who has filed his vice presiden-tial candidacy, will be her running mate, ABS-CBN news reported late on Saturday.

Sara Duterte-Carpio is currently mayor of Davao, the Philippines’ third-largest city, and on Saturday filed her candidacy to run again for mayor. She has previously said she would not run for national office next year.

ABS-CBN news based its report

on an interview that president Duterte had with a broadcast jour-nalist right after he announced that he was retiring from politics on Saturday, while accompanying his

closest loyalist Senator Christopher “Bong” Go to file his vice presiden-tial candidacy.

He was asked: “So is it clear, Sara-Go?”When asked to confirm what the president said, Duterte-Carpio’s spokesperson Mayor Christina Gar-cia Frasco told Reuters: “The extent of my knowledge is also what was reported in local news. We have no comment on the same.”

ABS-CBN news said it obtained permission from the broadcast journalist to use the video showing Duterte outside a hotel in Manila where the registration of candi-dates was taking place and that a transcript was also provided.

In the same clip, Duterte was asked when his daughter would file her candidacy for president, he said: “I really do not know. I do not

have any idea at all”.Asked if he had given his daugh-

ter permission to run for president, he said: “Ah, no, actually we don’t talk about politics, ever since we never talk about politics. I would say that it is for the better”.

Duterte’s political party has yet to officially nominate its presidential candidate and Duterte-Carpio be-longs to a different party.

Retired political science pro-fessor Temario Rivera said while Duterte’s daughter is winnable, the same could not be said about Go who has no political base, thus making a Duterte-Carpio-Go ticket “weak”.

“It would be an unsound political decision because what can Bong Go add to Sara’s candidacy?,” Rivera said.

Duterte, 76, said on Saturday he was retiring from politics, a surprise move that fuelled speculation he was clearing the way for a presiden-tial run by his daughter.

He had been expected to run for the No. 2 job, a plan most Filipinos oppose as violating the spirit of the constitution which sets a one-term limit for the president to stop power being abused.

Duterte- Carpio’s mayorial re-election filing, did little to douse speculation she has her eye on the presidency.

Analysts say it is crucial for Duterte to have a loyal successor to insulate him from potential legal action - at home or by the Interna-tional Criminal Court - over the thousands of state killings in his war on drugs since 2016.

Pandora Papers allegedly links world leaders to secret wealth• Some 35 current and former leaders and more than 300 public officials are featured in the files

• The leak links Russian President Vladimir Putin to secret assets in Monaco

• The examination of the files is the largest organised by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ), with more than 650 reporters taking part.

Agencies

A massive leak of financial documents was published by several major news or-

ganisations yesterday that alleged-ly tie world leaders to secret stores of wealth, including King Abdul-lah of Jordan, Czech Prime Min-ister Andrej Babis and associates of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The dump of more than 11.9 mil-lion records, amounting to about 2.94 terabytes of data, came five years after the leak known as the “Panama Papers” exposed how money was hidden by the wealthy in ways that law enforcement

agencies could not detect. The International Consortium of

Investigative Journalists, a Wash-ington, D.C.-based network of re-

porters and media organizations, said the files are linked to about 35 current and former national lead-ers, and more than 330 politicians and public officials in 91 coun-tries and territories. It did not say how the files were obtained, and Reuters could not independently verify the allegations or documents detailed by the consortium.

Jordan’s King Abdullah, a close ally of the United States, was al-leged to have used offshore ac-counts to spend more than $100 million on luxury homes in the United Kingdom and the United States.

DLA Piper, a London law office representing Abdullah, told the consortium of media outlets that he had “not at any point misused public monies or made any use

whatsoever of the proceeds of aid or assistance intended for public use.”

The Washington Post, which is part of the consortium, also report-ed on the case of Svetlana Krivo-nogikh, a Russian woman who it said became the owner of a Mona-co apartment through an offshore company incorporated on the Car-ibbean island of Tortola in April 2003 just weeks after she gave birth to a girl. At the time, she was in a secret, years-long relationship with Putin, the newspaper said, citing Russian investigative outlet Proekt. The Post said Krivonogikh, her daughter, who is now 18, and the Kremlin did not respond to requests for comment.

Days ahead of the Czech Re-public’s Oct. 8-9 parliamentary election, the documents allegedly tied the country’s prime minister, Babis, to a secret $22 million estate in a hilltop village near Cannes, France. Speaking during a televi-sion debate yesterday, Babis denied any wrongdoing.“The money left a Czech bank, was taxed, it was my money, and returned to a Czech bank,” Babis said.

The files also show that Azer-baijan’s ruling Aliyev family has traded close to £400m of UK prop-erty in recent years. One of their properties was sold to the Queen’s crown estate, which is now looking into how it came to pay £67m to a company that operated as a front for the family that runs a country

routinely accused of corruption. The Aliyevs declined to comment.

The Pandora papers also threat-en to cause political upsets for two European Union leaders. The prime minister of the Czech republic, Andrej Babiš, who is up for election this week, is fac-ing questions over why he used an offshore investment company to acquire a $22m chateau in the south of France. He too declined to comment.

And in Cyprus, itself a controver-sial offshore centre, the president, Nicos Anastasiades, may be asked to explain why a law firm he found-ed was accused of hiding the assets of a controversial Russian billion-aire behind fake company owners. The firm denies any wrongdoing, while the Cypriot president says he ceased having an active role in its affairs after becoming leader of the opposition in 1997.

Not everyone named in the Pan-dora papers is accused of wrong-doing. The leaked files reveals that Tony and Cherie Blair saved £312,000 in property taxes when they purchased a London building.

Ukraine’s president, Volody-myr Zelenskiy, who was elected in 2019 on a pledge to clean up his country’s notoriously corrupt and oligarch-influenced economy, is also named in the leak. During the campaign, Zelenskiy transferred his 25% stake in an offshore com-pany to a close friend who now works as the president’s top advis-er, the files suggest.

T h e R u s s i a n p r e s i -dent, Vladimir Putin, whom the US suspects of having a secret fortune, does not appear in the files by name. But numerous close associates do, including his best friend from childhood – the late Petr Kolbin – whom critics have called a “wallet” for Putin’s own wealth, and a woman the Russian leader was allegedly once roman-tically involved with.

Britney Spears says she has ‘a lot of healing to do’ despite recent conservatorship victoryFox | Los Angeles

Britney Spears wa n t s h e r fans to know

that she’s still on a path toward heal-ing.

The 39-year-o l d p o p st a r

took to Ins-

tagram on Saturday to share her thoughts on big recent developments in her life.

“Although there is change and things to celebrate in my life, I still have a lot of heal-ing to do!!!” Spears wrote in a caption for a photo of a tree.

“Thankfully I have a good support system and am tak-ing time to understand it’s ok to slow down and breathe!!!!! Only through self love I can pray … love … and support others in return!!!!” Spears added.

In a follow-up post, the “Toxic” singer shared a photo of a tiny rose in the

palm of her hand. “I’m post-ing this cause it matches the pink building with red tow-els I posted,” she wrote.

Spears is known for her love of roses, specifical-ly red roses. Over the last year, she has shared cryptic posts about a secret “Project Rose.”

The singer’s post about healing comes just days af-ter she scored a major vic-tory in her conservatorship battle. On Wednesday, Judge Brenda Penny suspended her father, James P. Spears, as conservator of her estate. It was a move Spears and her attorney, Mathew Rosen-gart, have been pushing for in recent months.

The singer delivered bombshell testimony in court in June, accusing her father of “conservatorship abuse.”

Jodie Comer felt relaxed working with Ridley Scott in ‘The Last Duel’IANS | Los Angeles

Actress Jodie Comer stars in the historical drama ‘The Last Duel’

that has been helmed by ‘Gladiator’ filmmaker Ridley Scott, and reveals that she was relaxed on sets because the director had a lot of faith in her.

Comer tells HeyUGuys.com: “That’s the dream because as an actor or an actress, you immediately settle down when you realise that a director has belief in you. You can rely on someone to tell you to push it a little bit or change something.

“He just knows what he is do-ing, so that puts you at ease. He has four or five cameras rolling the entire time which forces everybody to be present.”

The actress plays Margue-rite de Carrouges in the movie, which has been written by her co-stars Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, and tells the story of the final legally sanctioned duel in France’s history during the 14th century.

She says that she was puzzled by the scale of her part at first.

Courteney Cox surprises ‘Friends’ fans on Warner Bros. Studio tour

ANI | Washington

Hollywood actor Courteney Cox

recently revealed what she does in between takes f o r h e r u p -coming hor-ror- comedy series, ‘Shin-ing Vale’.

A c c o r d -ing to People

magazine, in the footage, shared on

Cox’s Instagram handle, she asks a crew member when she’s need-ed for her next scene and learns

that she has an hour until it’s time to return to set.

“I’ve got to do my other shift,” the actor said before Dolly Par-ton’s ‘9 to 5’ started playing and she launched into several tasks around the Warner Bros. studio lot in Los Angeles, California.

Cox was seen working as a cashier in the gift shop, giving out parking passes at the front security gate, and even serving coffee to ‘Friends’ fans snap-ping photos on the Central Perk set as part of the studio’s tour.

Last week, Cox had com-memorated the 27th anniver-sary of the ‘Friends’ premiere by sharing footage of herself talking about the sitcom dur-ing a 1994 appearance on ‘The Tonight Show’ with Jay Leno.

“27 years ago... when it start-ed. #Friends,” Cox, who played Monica Geller for 10 seasons, captioned the throwback clip.

In the video, Cox described ‘Friends’ as a “great show” after host Jay Leno remarked that he had “read some nice things” about the series.

“It’s about six unique char-acters that are all friends. It’s really a truly situational come-dy, just the different situations they get into,” she explained at the time.

Also starring Jennifer Anis-ton, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeB-lanc, Matthew Perry and David Schwimmer, ‘Friends’ became a television phenomenon during its original run from 1994 to 2004.

Jodie Comer says that she was puzzled by the scale

Treble joy for Bahrain VictoriousTeam Bahrain Victorious riders claim three titles in elite European races yesterday

• Stevie Williams wins General Classification while Bahrain Victorious finish as Best Team at the end of CRO Race in Croatia

• Sonny Colbrelli edges three-way sprint finish to win rain-hit Paris-Roubaix in France

TDT | Manama

Team Bahrain Victorious had thrice the reason to celebrate yesterday with their riders win-

ning highly competitive elite races in Europe

Stevie Williams claimed the overall victory in the General Classification at the 2021 CRO Race in Croatia, where Bahrain Victorious’ riders also won first place in the Teams classification.

To add to that, Bahrain Victorious’ Sonny Colbrelli clinched the win at the 118th edition of the Paris-Roubaix, a one-day professional race in northern France.

In Croatia, the event was a part of the 2021 UCI Europe Tour.

Bahrain Victorious were at the top from the start, with Phil Bauhaus win-ning the first of the race’s six stages.

Williams then moved into the GC lead on the penultimate queen stage, before finishing second on the final day yesterday to secure the overall crown.

After the first overall win of his ca-reer, Williams was quoted as saying: “You never start a day expecting for sure, but I was confident in myself and in my team who did an excellent ride, and as a team, we were fantastic all day.

“It was a lot harder stage than I pre-dicted. In the end, it was pretty tactical

the way it all happened, but all stage, it was pretty demanding, windy, quite technical, lots of changes of directions. My teammates brought me perfectly to the circuit and gave me the best chance to stay safe and go for myself.

“As a team, we did a great job the whole week, and I am proud to be a part of it. This win is a team victory.”

In France, Colbrelli edged a three-way sprint finish to win a rain-hit Par-is-Roubaix.

Colbrelli caked in mud after the

258km race, held his bike aloft after crossing the line, then collapsed in tears and rolled around on the grass.

“I can’t believe it—my first Paris-Rou-baix and this happens,” Colbrelli was quoted as saying.

“I’m very happy because it was a leg-endary Paris-Roubaix with the rain. In the finale, I did a super sprint.

“That was close! In my dream races, Tour of Flanders is first and Paris-Rou-baix is second. This is my year. I’m very happy.”

Khamzat Chimaev credits global MMA success to BRAVE CF

TDT | Manama

Rising mixed martial arts star Khamzat Chimaev be-

lieves he wouldn’t be where he is right now if not for BRAVE Combat Federation.

The Bahrain-based outfit took a chance on the Rus-sian-born Swede, who only had two professional fights at the time and was on the heels of his back-to-back gold-med-al finish at the 2016 and 2017 Swedish Freestyle National Championships.

Chimaev was in attendance for BRAVE CF 54 in Konin, Po-land last September 25 to cor-ner his teammate Bilal “Borz” Tipsaev, who competed on the supporting card against Glenn McVeigh in a bantamweight encounter.

In an exclusive backstage interview, he conceded that the organization played a vital role in his prizefighting career.

“I want to thank this organ-ization and HH Shaikh Khalid and everyone who works with them,” Chimaev said. “They grow up every day, this organ-ization grows up.”

“It’s nice to be here, I’m hap-py,” he added. “This is like my family, I’ve been a fighter here. If it wasn’t for BRAVE, then maybe I wouldn’t have been who I am. Big thanks to them.”

Chimaev left a lasting im-pression inside the BRAVE CF

cage, finishing his first three bouts in under three minutes. In his first outing, he authored an emphatic stoppage victory over Marko Kisic at BRAVE CF 18 in November 2018.

A month later, he made a quick turnaround and ac-cepted a middleweight clash against Sidney Wheeler at BRAVE CF 20, where he got the job done by thwarting the American stalwart in 35 sec-onds.

Chimaev returned to ac-tion at BRAVE CF 23 in April 2019, where he took home the Knockout of the Night award for shutting the lights off on Ikram Aliskerov.

His last assignment un-der the promotion’s banner happened six months later at BRAVE CF 27, where he submit-ted Mzwandile Hlongwa with a wrenching D’arce choke in the second round.

• Raed Himmo beats defending champion Raed Raffii to the finish in both race wins

• Andreas Buelow finishes first in Novice class for both first round races

TDT | Manama

Raed Himmo powered to a fantastic double in the opening round of the

2021/2022 BIC 2,000cc Chal-lenge, held over the weekend as part of National Race Day at Bahrain International Circuit, “The Home of Motorsport in the Middle East”.

The Sakhir desert facility pro-vided a stunning backdrop for Himmo’s brilliant start to the new season, with both his race wins coming under BIC’s bright

floodlights.The series’ 2012/2013 title

winner was behind the wheel of his black/blue Honda Civic, as he overcame a stiff challenge from defending champion Raed Raffii in each of the meeting’s two 12-lap sprints.

Andreas Buelow started off the day by topping the timesheet in Practice with a best lap of one minute 20.655 seconds around BIC’s 2.550-kilometre Inner Track, driving his white Honda

Civic.Ali Al Mansoori in a blue/grey

Honda Civic then pipped Him-mo to pole position by 0.224 sec-onds in Qualifying with a fastest lap of 1:16.849.

But in Race One, Himmo was quick to take over as leader, charging to the front of the pack around the very first corner and then doing masterfully to hold on to the advantage until the chequered flag.

Himmo finished the race in a

winning time of 18:15.408. Raffii was engaged in a tight battle for the runner-up spot with Al Man-soori until the latter retired from the race on lap seven.

Raffii was 1.532s behind Him-mo, while Buelow claimed third place overall 3.854s back. Bue-low was also the race’s winner in the Novice class.

Nasser Al Alawi (red Hon-da S2000) completed the Pro class podium behind Himmo and Raffii, while joining Bue-

low on the Novice podium were Giovanni Salerno (blue Ford Fo-cus) and Andrew Ray (white/red Honda Integra DC2).

Wiebke Buelow (Novice class, white Honda Civic) and Majed Himmo (Pro, yellow/black Hon-da Civic) completed the final classification. Al Mansoori was not classified.

In Race Two, Al Alawi was in pole and Buelow beside him following the reverse grid rule. It wasn’t long, however, until

Himmo was able to capture the lead, which he did early in the second lap.

He eventually led the same trio onto the overall podium, clinching first place in 15:54.395. He was 4.954s ahead of Raffii and 8.789s in front of Buelow. Al Alawi was originally third, but he, along with Himmo and Raffii, was given a five-second penalty for a start offence, pro-moting Buelow.

Al Alawi was still third in the Pro class, while behind Buelow in the Novice were Wiebke Bue-low in second and Salerno in third.

Majed Himmo was sixth over-all and fourth amongst the Pro drivers, and Moaaz Elzahrawi (white Honda Civic EK) eighth overall and fourth in the Novice class to round out the final clas-sification.
