The latest talks in Vienna to save the 2015 Iran nu-clear deal were positive

despite fresh tensions. Tehran is preparing to ramp up urani-um enrichment in response to an attack on a facility it blamed on Israel.

The latest round of negotia-tions occurred between diplo-mats over roughly two hours yesterday afternoon, with Rus-sia’s ambassador to the UN in Vienna Mikhail Ulyanov tweet-ing afterwards that the “general impression is positive”.

He added the talks “will be followed by a number of infor-mal meetings in different for-

mats, including at expert level”.The talks comprised dele-

gations from the remaining parties to the deal -- Germany, France, Britain, China, Russia and Iran.

A European diplomat had said ahead of the meeting that Iran’s announcement that it would enrich uranium up to 60% “puts pressure on every-one”.

Adel bin Abdulrahman Al-Asoumi, the Speaker of the Arab

Parliament, said the 60% en-richment decision exacerbates doubts about the end uses of the Iranian nuclear programme.

“The international commu-nity, in particular the countries involved in the ongoing negoti-ations, should pressurise Iran to threatening the nuclear securi-ty situation in the region,” said Al-Asoumi.

End interferenceThe Speaker of the Arab Par-

liament also called on coun-tries to reach a comprehensive agreement that includes clear, specific and long-term meas-ures that prevent Iran from ac-quiring nuclear weapons or de-velop capabilities necessary for the ballistic missile programme.

The President of the Arab Parliament stressed that the ongoing negotiations should not be limited to dealing with the nuclear aspects but should end the continuing interference of Iran in the internal affairs of Arab countries.

Al-Asoumi called for an Arab voice in these negotiations, which, he said, is the natural right for Arab countries to en-hance security and stability.

UAE is mediating between India and PakistanDubai

The United Arab Emir-ates’ envoy to Washing-

ton confirmed the Gulf state is mediating between India and Pakistan to help them reach a “healthy and func-tional” relationship.

Ambassador Yousef Al Otaiba said in a virtual dis-cussion with Stanford Uni-versity’s Hoover Institution on Wednesday that the UAE played a role “in bringing Kashmir escalation down and created a ceasefire, hopefully ultimately lead-ing to restoring diplomats and getting the relationship back to a healthy level”.

Day of fun, as they dance to the tunes of Dramyin

TDT | Manama

It was a day full of fun, laugh-ter and high energy for the Everest team, who are mak-

ing firm steps towards their fi-nal target, Mt. Everest.

Team members were in high spirits as they rested at their tents at the base camp surround-ed by snow-capped mountains.

Making their faces beaming with smiles amid the bone-chill-ing cold was some exquisite heartwarming music.

They clapped in unison, pro-ducing a rhythmic base for the player of dramyin, a traditional Himalayan folk music lute with six strings.

The atmosphere got further heated up with the team mem-bers joining in dancing to the beats of dramyin.

Their voices reverberated around the mountains making the atmosphere celebratory.

Making the day ‘special’ for them were owners of Seven Summit Trek and Sherpas.

Posting a video of the joy-ful moments, the team wrote on their Instagram page, “The team are not only training their bodies but will also spend time daily with the Sherpas building a strong bond for when they are on the mountain @nasser-13hamad.”

“Sherpas are the children of Himalayas.. long live Bah-rain-Nepal friendship.. we will be pleased to serve more Bah-rani brothers in Nepal,” a com-ment followed the post.

“That landscape! Those tents! Huge mountains! Your gear times 10! You got this climb in the bag guys!” another post reads.

A day before, the team also ac-companied the sherpas in their ceremonial puja wishing the mission all success.

“Puja, also spelt pooja or poo-jah, in Hinduism, ceremonial worship, ranging from brief dai-ly rites in the home to elaborate temple rituals. The word puja is from the Dravidian “flower”. In its simplest form, puja usually consists of making an offering of flowers or fruit to an image of a god,” the team wrote.

The 16 member expedition team is hoping to climb Mount Everest, either towards the end of this month by early next month.

Earlier, High Highness Shai-kh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khal-ifa, HM the King’s Represent-ative for Humanitarian Works and Youth Affairs, commander

of the Royal Guard, in an online call termed the success achieved by the team so far as “one of a kind achievements for the King-dom of Bahrain.”

Shaikh Nasser expressed his confidence in their ability, say-ing, “The team had made major strides.”

“There are challenges ahead, but you are well capable of over-coming them,” Shaikh Nasser told the team.

The mission, Shaikh Nasser said, had received regional and international appreciation.

A team of 100 people, in-cluding the royal expedition team members, Sherpas, mountain guides and high altitude workers, are climbing Mt Everest.

The team has already scaled Lobuche peak and Mt Manaslu in the Octo-ber of 2020.

Eleven inspectors of the General Organisation for Social Insurance took the legal oath virtually in front of Shaikh Salman bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, the Minister of Finance and National Economy as per the provisions of Resolution No. (8) of 2021 to carry out inspections on the establishments subject to the Social Insurance Law. Shaikh Salman stressed the importance of carrying out duties with integrity, accuracy and professionalism, stressing their importance in strengthening the Social Insurance Law.

TDT | agencies

Bahrain condemned in strongest terms yester-day the terrorist Houthi

attack using a barrage of ballistic missiles and bomb-laden drones at a Saudi University near the border.

The attack, using five ballistic missiles and four explosive-lad-en drones, were intercepted by the Arab Coalition.

The coalition confirmed that they thwarted the overnight attacks, and the interception scattered debris on the campus, causing a small fire.

There are no casualties and no immediate reports of injuries.

“Attempts by the hostile Houthi militia are systematic and deliberate to target civil-ians,” the coalition said in a statement.

Video on social media pur-portedly showed a Patriot mis-sile flying low across Jizan to intercept a missile or drone, with it detonating over the city.

Bahrain’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs praised the readiness, vigilance, and efficiency of the Saudi Royal Air Forces in in-tercepting and destroying the drones and ballistic missiles.

The ministry confirmed that Bahrain stands with Saudi and supports all the deterrent meas-ures it takes against any side that tries to undermine its security, stability and territorial integrity.

Coalition forces had said that it “will take all necessary meas-ures to protect civilians in line with international, humanitar-ian laws.”

The barrage came just hours after Saudi Arabia warned Iran

its recent decision to push its nu-clear enrichment to its highest level ever risked raising tensions in the Mideast.

The Saudi statement blamed the Iran-backed Houthi group for the attack, saying the five ballistic missiles and four bomb-laden drones specifical-ly targeted civilian areas and launched from Saada in Yemen.

Houthi military spokesman Brig. Gen. Yehia Sarie tweet-ed yesterday that his group had launched 11 missiles and drones at Saudi Arabia, targeting the kingdom’s Patriot defence sys-tem, oil sites and other “critical” areas in Jizan.

The conflict in Yemen was sparked by the Houthis takeo-ver of the capital, Sanaa, in 2014.

Since the war began, the Hou-this have launched over 550 bomb-laden drones and more than 350 ballistic missiles to-ward Saudi Arabia, the king-dom told The Associated Press in April.

On Wednesday, the US State Department issued a warning to Americans to reconsider travel to the kingdom over the missile and drone attacks, as well as the coronavirus pandemic.

“M i s s i l e a n d d ro n e a t-tacks perpetrated by Iran and Iran-supported militant groups represent a significant threat,” the warning said.

“The US citizens living and working near military bases and critical civilian infrastructure, particularly near the border with Yemen, are at heightened risk of missile, drone and rocket attacks.”

Security and stability of Saudi linked to the region: Arab ParliamentTDT | Manama

The Arab Parliament ex-pressed its strong con-

demnation and denunciation of the terrorist Houthi militia attack on the Jizan.

The Arab Parliament said the continued attempts of the terrorist Houthi militia constitutes flagrant defiance of international law and its rejection of all political efforts to end the crisis in Yemen, which serve the subversive

agendas of Iran in the region. It also called on the inter-

national community to un-dertake its role and assume its responsibilities towards these Militias and deterrence of

their unacceptable violations. The Arab Parliament also

backed the measures Saudi Arabia takes to protect its se-curity and territorial integrity.

“The security and stability of the Kingdom are linked to the security and stability of the region.”

T h e A ra b Pa r l i a m e n t praised the Coalition Forces for taking operational meas-ures to protect civilians and civilian objects from terrorist attacks.

Court jails three family members for joining Islamic State in Syria TDT | Manama

Three family members, who were found guilty of joining

the Islamic State, were handed jail terms on terrorism charges by a Bahraini Court.

The High Criminal Court sentenced a 52-year-old man and his two relatives to three years behind bars for terrorist activities.

Court files said the defend-ants distributed pro-IS bro-chures and wrote slogans on the walls venerating terrorism acts.

Investigators found the first suspect, aged 52, travelled to Syria in 2013 under the pretext of taking part in a humanitarian relief mission.

Police said that his real mis-sion was, however, joining the Al Nusra front.

After joining the front, the man also persuaded the two others to support IS from Bah-rain.

Police told the court that he was seeking to recruit more men to join the terrorist organ-isation.

The 52-year-old man also confessed during interrogation that he was attracted to Jihadist doctrines since the early nine-ties. “I decided to join them once he travelled to Syria.

“I knew my cousins (the sec-ond and third defendants) were also trying to fight with jihad-ists, so I established links with them,” he added.

Public prosecution charged the trio with attempts to harm the state unity, promote terror-ist operations and spread takfir ideas.

Money laundering, prostitution: Man gets 5-year jailTDT | Manama

The High Criminal Court yesterday awarded a five-

year jail term and a 10 thou-sand dinars fine to a man, an Asian national, charged with

laundering money earned from prostitution.

The court also ordered to confiscate BD 242,236.390 either as money or property from him and deport him after serving the jail term. Inves-

tigators tracked the suspect’s fund transfers and the country to which he is transferring the money. He transferred money through exchange houses in small amounts to not to raise suspicion.

UoB issues certificates using Blockchain technology

TDT | Manama

The University of Bahrain announced issuing de-

grees and certificates of grad-uation using blockchain tech-nology for the past four years.

“This allows universities and business entities to verify the credibility of the academ-ic certificates electronically within a short time,” said UoB in a statement.

The technology also allows people to share their certifi-cates on social media without fear of getting hoodwinked.

“Students can now avoid applying for an original copy each time they approach an educational institution or an employer,” UoB said.

The digital university cer-tificate can be sent via e-mail or text messages or as a link in the CV or LinkedIn for ver-ification.

Students, UoB said, can receive their certificates via

e-mail and save them in the Blockcert secure phone ap-plication designed to receive, store and share the University of Bahrain digital certificate.

To obtain the digital certifi-cate, download the free appli-cation on the phone, add the University of Bahrain as an issuer, then add the certificate to the application.

The application allows sav-ing as many certificates from different institutions in one place in an encrypted form.

“Thus, a student is solely responsible for managing the application and ensuring that the password is kept safe,” UoB said.

However, if a student loses the password, contact the uni-versity to re-issue the digital certificate.

The University of Bahrain has applied this technology to graduate degrees in 2019 and then to bachelor’s degrees gradually.

Bahrain’s transition to electric vehicles soon, says Dr Mirza

• Opportunities open for companies in the renewable energy sector

• Mulls using hydrogen as an energy source

• To use unoccupied spaces in infrastructure projects for solar energy production

• To reduce emission level to 1.2 to 2%

TDT | Manama

Bahrain’s transition to elec-tric vehicles is starting to accelerate, with the King-

dom appointing a consultant to determine the infrastructural cost.

Dr Abdul-Hussain Mirza, the President of the Sustaina-ble Energy Authority, said the Kingdom is working on the cost associated with realising the transition.

He said the Ministry of In-dustry, Commerce and Tourism had prepared guidelines to en-able faster adoption of electric vehicles by ensuring safe, reli-able, accessible and affordable Charging Infrastructure and eco-system.

“The government is planning to implement a technical regu-lation as early as July to allow importing such vehicles,” added Dr Mirza.

The developments came dur-ing a press briefing on the Na-tional action plans for renewable energy and power efficiency.

The National Communication Centre, in cooperation with the Sustainable Energy Authority, held the press conference.

Dr Mirza said the authority is studying the possibility of using hydrogen as a fuel for motive power.

As of 2019, there are three models of hydrogen cars pub-licly available in select mar-kets. Toyota Mirai is the first mass-produced dedicated fuel cell electric vehicle. The other two are Hyundai Nexo and the Honda Clarity.

Hydrogen as energyExplaining, Dr Mirza said

there are three different pro-duction process for hydrogen production.

The greener way is to make hydrogen by splitting it out of the water using electrolysis. The process produces hydrogen and oxygen, where hydrogen is cap-tured as fuel and release oxygen as environmental friendly waste.

The second method works by splitting hydrogen and CO2 out of natural gas and is called Blue hydrogen. In use here is ei-ther Steam Methane Reforming

(SMR) or Auto Thermal Reform-ing. The CO2 is captured and then stored through a process called Carbon Capture Usage and Storage. Another method of hydrogen production is by using electrolysis. Hydrogen thus pro-duced is called yellow, where electrolysis is achieved solely through solar or nuclear power.

Bahrain, Dr Mirza said, will focus on green hydrogen, where the byproduct is oxygen.

535 government buildingsDr Mirza said that many local

and international companies are seeking to invest in renewable energy production.

During a recent meeting held by the authority, several com-panies had expressed their in-terest in investing in installing solar roof panels for government buildings.

In total, 535 buildings are there in the Kingdom that could run on solar power.

Dr Mirza said, “The Sustain-able Energy Authority, along with the Education Ministry, launched a tender for installing solar energy systems in eight government schools as a pilot project.”

20 schools selectedThese schools have over 20

buildings selected to install solar energy systems in exchange for a tariff that the bidding compa-nies put on the tender, provided it is lower than the government tariff.

The move is to lower the cost of electricity for these school by about 30%, added Dr Mirza.

The government will not in-

cur any expenses as the winning company is financing and main-taining it for 20 years.

50 megawattsThe authority, Dr Mriza said,

is moving ahead with the pro-cess of allocating land for install-ing solar energy systems.

The requirement is that sys-tems thus installed should pro-duce 50 megawatts or above from an area of 10 thousand square meters.

Dr Mirza revealed that many companies are looking forward to participating in this national initiative, especially wind power generation.

In a deal with Tamkeen, banksHe also pointed out that Bah-

rain is one of the first countries to grant a renewable energy cer-tificate, issued electronically for every one megawatt-hour ener-gy produced.

The system also enables pro-ducers of renewable energy to offer renewable energy certifi-cates for sale to those wishing to invest in renewable energy and benefit from the certificates to overcome the challenges that prevent them from producing renewable energy themselves.

The authority, Dr Mirza said, had also signed deals with Tam-keen and seven banks in the Kingdom for cooperation in this sector.

On the National Renewable Energy plan, Dr Mirza said the authority is currently organising six training courses.

The total number of people benefitting from this programme has reached 314, of which 224

were successful.Job opportunities “These training programmes

also created new and promising job opportunities for nationals,” said Dr Mirza, adding that the aims to improve efficiency by 6% and increase renewable energy use by 5% by 2025.

The National Energy Efficien-cy plan had resulted in achieving 70% of the renewable energy target. “Several projects are on the anvil which would come into effect the current and next year.”

“To overcome the space con-straints, the authority is taking advantage of building rooftops.

The plan is to use unoccupied spaces in infrastructure projects by installing solar panels on wa-ter tanks, service corridors for water distribution pipelines, and integrating renewable energy solution in bridges and recre-ational facilities - gardens and parks.

He said that a green building guide is launched as part of 22 initiatives in the National Plan to Raise Energy Efficiency. “This would save around 230 million Bahraini dinars annually.”

All these initiatives, Dr Mirza said, “will contribute to reducing the cost of electricity and water for citizens in future.”

The total electricity produc-tion in Bahrain is about 3,920 megawatts per day from natural gas stations.

Solar energy, waste and other similar sources are an alterna-tive to gas, where its optimal use will limit gas to major strategic projects.

Bahrain’s main objective, Dr Mirza said, is to used renewable energy in all plans, strategies and project by encouraging invest-ment in clean energy.

“The transition to renewable energy is an inevitable necessity in light of the unprecedented global changes,” Dr Mirza said, citing the recent meeting of the International International Re-newable Energy Agency.

He said that the total value of the investment in renewable en-ergy reached 820 billion dollars last year. “This would rise to $2 trillion over the next two years.”

“Many countries have zero carbon emission targets, and re-

newable energy is an alternative to fossil energy.”

On this note, he pointed out that Bahrain is looking forward to achieving its international commitments related to the en-vironment and renewable en-ergy by reducing emission level down to 1.2 - 2% range.

He also pointed that the eco-nomic vision of Bahrain calls for diversifying energy sources and sources of income. “Bahrain is committed to achieving all of that,” stressed Dr Mirza.

The government is planning to implement a technical regulation as early as July to allow

importing such vehicle. the authority is studying the possibility of using hydrogen as a fuel for

motive power. Bahrain will focus on green hydrogen, where the byproduct is oxygen.

Iran accident: Bahrain not exposed to nuclear radiationTDT | Manama

The accident at the Iranian nuclear facility in Natanz

had produced zero risks to Bah-rain in terms of harmful radi-ations, Interior Minister con-firmed.

“There is no radiation hazard to people or the environment within the borders of Bahrain or its territorial waters,” said Lieu-

tenant General Sheikh Rashid bin Abdullah Al Khalifa.

The confirmation came as the minister chaired a meeting of the Civil Defence Council to review the outcomes of an accident at the Natanz Iranian nuclear facility.

Earlier, the Public Security Chief chaired an emergency meeting of the National Dis-aster Management Commit-tee and had directed a panel to study the general prepar-edness and the formation of a team to review procedures and launch a media plan to enhance public awareness on

radiation accidents.Oil Minister, Works, Munici-

palities Affairs and Urban Plan-ning Minister, Industry, Com-merce and Tourism Minister, Information Affairs Minister, Electricity and Water Affairs Minister, Chief of Public Secu-rity and the Special Envoy for Climate Affairs and the CEO of the Supreme Council for Envi-ronment were present.

The Special Envoy for Climate Affairs and CEO of the Supreme Council for Environment, Dr Mohammed bin Mubarak bin Daina, said that the Iranian plant is far from Bahrain and there is no connection to any water-course.

He assured that measures in place to monitor any pollution

and radiation and deal with such incidents.

The Interior Minister direct-ed to inspect the general pre-paredness and required steps to protect citizens and residents and securely deal with threats

and risks. The meeting discussed public

and private shelters that should be part of future residential projects. It also recommended launching an awareness cam-paign to deal with possible sit-uations.

The Interior Minister said that shelters are a crucial part of dealing with any chemical leak or pollution.

Reports, Alireza Zakani, head of the Iranian parliament’s Re-search Centre, said that thou-sands of machines used to refine nuclear material were destroyed or damaged in an attack at a key site on Sunday.

The attack took place in a fa-cility up to 50m (165ft) under-ground, another official said.

Citigroup announced plans to exit its retail business in Bahrain and 12 other

countries across Asia, Europe, Middle East and Africa region to focus on wealth management business.

The bank said it lacked the scale to compete in the retail

space of those countries. Citigroup will instead oper-

ate its consumer-banking fran-chise in both regions from four wealth centres in Singapore, Hong Kong, the United Arab Emirates and London, the group said in a statement yesterday.

The move is part of an on-going review of the company’s strategy by Chief Executive Of-ficer Jane Fraser, who took over last month.

While announcing quarterly results, the bank said it would exit from its consumer franchis-es in India, Australia, Bahrain, China, Indonesia, Korea, Malay-sia, Philippines, Poland, Russia, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam. The firm will continue to offer products in those markets to customers of its institutional clients group, which houses the

private bank, cash-management arm and investment banking and trading businesses.

“This positions us to capture the strong growth and attrac-tive returns the wealth-manage-ment business offers through these important hubs,” Fraser said in the statement.

The New York-based bank has already been building out a

wealth-advisory hub in Singa-pore. The 30,000-square-foot (2,800-square-meter) space is the largest of its kind for the bank and has room for more than 300 relationship managers and product specialists.

The withdrawal came as Citi-group reported record quarter-ly profit, boosted by the flurry of blank-check companies it helped take public in the first three months of the year.

“While the other 13 markets have excellent businesses, we don’t have the scale we need to compete,” Fraser said. “We believe our capital, investment dollars and other resources are better deployed against high-er returning opportunities in wealth management and our institutional businesses in Asia.”

The bank will now “double down on wealth,” Fraser said.

Fraser’s admission that it lacked the scale for compet-ing in markets such as India is something that analysts have flagged before.

In India, competition has heated up with competition from the likes of HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank and large pub-lic sector banks such as State Bank of India and Bank of Bar-oda which are nimble-footed and technology-savvy and are continuously innovating on the retail turf with newer products for customer acquisition.

Carbon tax could help Asian countries hit climate targets: IMF

• The IMF is urging the world’s largest emitters to adopt carbon price floors to ensure more substantial climate change mitigation

Reuters | Washington

A carbon price that starts low and rises steadily

could help Asian countries reach their targets under the Paris climate accord over the next decade, the head of the International Monetary Fund said yesterday, citing new IMF research.

IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva told an event hosted by the People’s Bank of China that there was a growing consensus that carbon pricing was the most efficient and cost-effective way to curb-ing emissions.

By raising energy prices overall, carbon pricing creates incentives for households and firms to shift toward greener options, while promoting en-ergy efficiency, boosting green investments and spurring in-novation, she said.

The IMF is urging the world’s largest emitters to adopt carbon price floors to ensure more substantial cli-mate change mitigation, she said. London-based climate data provider TransitionZero on Thursday said China needs to halve carbon dioxide emis-sions from its coal-fired power plants by the end of the dec-

ade if it is to remain on course to become carbon neutral by 2060. Georgieva said changes were critical in Asia, which is home to the majority of the world’s population and ac-counts for almost half of the world’s carbon emissions.

The Asia-Pacific region is al-ready experiencing faster-ris-ing temperatures and more weather-related natural dis-asters than anywhere else, and climate change is a key driver of rising poverty and worsen-ing food insecurity, she said.

But accelerating the switch to greener economies could help boost the economic re-covery from the coronavirus crisis. Carbon taxes could also generate substantial revenues, but countries could use other instruments, such as China’s coal tax, which could eventu-ally be scaled up to curb CO2 emissions.

Georgieva said China was taking “a major step forward” with its national carbon emis-sions trading system for the power sector. Over time, she said, China could put a cap on total emissions, adopt more ambitious targets and extend the system beyond the power sector.

Oil holds near one-month highs as demand outlook improvesReuters

Oil prices held near a one-month high on Thursday

following positive US econom-ic data and higher demand forecasts from the Interna-tional Energy Agency (IEA) and OPEC as countries start to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic.

The IEA and the Organisa-tion of the Petroleum Export-ing Countries this week made upward revisions to their glob-al oil demand growth forecasts for 2021 to 5.7 million barrels per day (bpd) and 5.95 million bpd respectively.

US retail sales rebounded more than expected in March as Americans received addi-tional pandemic relief checks and as COVID-19 vaccinations

allowed broader economic re-engagement.

That data and upbeat earn-ings from several companies helped push the S&P 500 and the Dow Jones indexes to re-cord highs, bolstering hopes of a broader economic rebound.

Brent futures rose 4 cents, or 0.1%, to $66.62 a barrel by 11:47 a.m. EDT (1547 GMT), while US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude fell 7 cents, or 0.1%, to $63.08.

On Wednesday, both con-tracts jumped almost 5% to settle at their highest levels since March 17.

“Following such (an) upbeat performance, some consoli-dation around these levels is not so surprising,” said Sophie Griffiths, market analyst UK & EMEA at OANDA.

Aramco pipeline investors to refinance loan with bonds next year - sourcesReuters | Dubai

EIG Global Energy Partners will lead a yet-unnamed con-

sortium to issue billions of dol-lars in bonds across two or three transactions to replace bank debt backing an investment in Saudi Aramco’s oil pipeline as-sets, two sources said.

The Washington, DC-based firm’s consortium will issue bonds to replace $10.5 billion in so-called staple financing that was arranged by Aramco for potential suitors to take the 49% stake, the sources said.

The $12.4 billion deal, an-nounced last Friday, gives the EIG-led group a stake in Ara-mco Oil Pipelines, which has the rights to 25 years of tariff

payments for oil transported through Aramco’s oil pipeline network that traverses the world’s largest crude exporter.

The staple financing backing the deal had a five-year maturity and one-year extension option, the sources said.

EIG will replace the full amount with long-tenor bonds across two or three bond deals, they said.

The first bond issuance will likely be in the first quarter of next year and the entire refi-nancing will be done within two years, the sources said.

The equity portion of the $12.4 billion deal was $1.9 bil-lion and the rest was the staple financing, one of the sources said.

EIG is in talks to sell part of the equity portion to investors including Abu Dhabi state fund Mubadala, Chinese investors, pension funds in Saudi Arabia and the UAE, as well as a small piece to US pension funds, the source added.

US House committee approves blueprint for Big Tech crackdownReuters | Washington

The US House of Represent-atives Judiciary Committee

has formally approved a report accusing Big Tech companies of buying or crushing small-er firms, Representative David Cicilline’s office said in a state-ment yesterday

With the approval during a marathon, partisan hearing, the more than 400 page staff report will become an offi-cial committee report, and the blueprint for legislation to rein in the market power of the likes of Alphabet Inc’s Google,

Apple Inc, Amazon.com and Facebook.

The report was approved by a 24-17 vote that split along party lines. The companies have de-nied any wrongdoing.

The report first released in October - the first such con-

gressional review of the tech industry - suggested extensive changes to antitrust law and described dozens of instances where it said the companies had misused their power.

“Amazon, Apple, Google, and Facebook each hold monopoly power over significant sectors of our economy. This monopoly moment must end,” Cicilline said in a statement. “Now that the Judiciary Committee has formally adopted our findings, I look forward to crafting legis-lation that addresses the signif-icant concerns we have raised.”

The first bill has already been introduced. A bipartisan group of US lawmakers led by Cicilline and Senator Amy Klobuchar introduced legislation in March aimed at making it easier for news organizations to negotiate collectively with platforms like Google and Facebook.

Also in the Senate, Klobuchar introduced a broader bill in Feb-ruary aimed at strengthening antitrust enforcers’ ability to stop mergers by lowering the bar for stopping deals and in-creasing resources for enforc-ers.

Saudi Arabia to set up pavilion at International Architecture Exhibition in VeniceTDT | Riyadh

The Saudi National Pavilion will make its second ap-

pearance at the 17th Interna-tional Architecture Exhibition in Venice with the exhibition: Accommodations.

The architects selected to represent the Kingdom are Hussam Dakkak, Basmah Kaki and Hessa AlBader. With their practice spanning Jeddah, Lon-don and Kuwait City, the trio represent a new generation of creatives coming of age during the country’s cultural transfor-mation. They will work along-side Brooklyn-based curators Uzma Z. Rizvi and Murtaza Vali.

Reflecting on this year’s theme of “How Will We Live Together?” through the lens of quarantine, both current and historical, the Saudi Pa-vilion will be presented as an experiential exhibition rooted in archival research. Through its structure and design, it will invite moments of exploration, retrospection and analysis. Envisioned as several spaces within a space, the three-part

exhibition will invite visitors into the realms of quaran-tine through which they will explore the intertwining re-lationship between inclusion and exclusion. The exhibition will examine the evolution of enclosures as they respond to external contexts, derive new meanings from novel situations, and redefine the relationship between the individual, the community and the other.

“The exhibition traces the history of enclosures, exam-ining how the built environ-ment and urban fabric adapts to accommodate emergency conditions and how the mean-ing and use of such spaces shift over time. Through the Saudi

Pavilion, we hope to inspire a greater understanding of the tensions between the acts of separation inherent in quaran-tine and the acts of accommo-dation required to continue liv-ing,” explained curators Uzma Z. Rizvi and Murtaza Vali.

Situated once again within the Venetian Arsenale, a com-plex of historic shipyards, the exhibition will be simultane-ously experienced in Venice and online, allowing audienc-es around the world to engage with the question posed in this year’s theme.

high-quality programming,” said Madhavan. “We have an exciting journey ahead of us. I am committed to continuing to move our business forward, working more closely together with colleagues across Disney to enhance our global and re-gional offerings.”

Since 2019, Madhavan served as country manager of Star & Disney India, overseeing the Company’s television and stu-dios business in India. He has been responsible for driving the growth of the business, fo-cusing on innovation, and cre-ating compelling content for consumers.

US imposes new sanctions on Russia, expels diplomatsThe actions are, in part, a response to the SolarWinds hack and alleged Russian attempts to meddle in the 2020 elections

• The US government blacklisted Russian companies and barred US banks from buying sovereign bonds from Russia’s central bank, national wealth fund and finance ministry

Reuters | Washington

The United States announced sanctions against Russia yes-

terday and the expulsion of 10 diplomats in retaliation for what Washington says is the Kremlin’s US election interference, a mas-sive cyber attack and other hostile activity.

President Joe Biden ordered a widening of restrictions on US banks trading in Russian govern-ment debt, expelled 10 diplomats who include alleged spies, and sanctioned 32 individuals alleged to have tried to meddle in the 2020 presidential election, the White House said.

Biden’s executive order “sends a signal that the United States will impose costs in a strategic and economically impactful manner on Russia if it continues or esca-lates its destabilizing internation-al action,” the White House said in a statement.

The US barrage came the same week as Biden offered to meet President Vladimir Putin for their first face-to-face talks, suggesting that the summit could take place in a third country.

The Kremlin gave an initial-ly positive response to the idea but said yesterday that sanctions would not “help.”

After the White House unveiled its measures, the Russian foreign ministry said a response was “in-evitable.”

“The United States is not ready to come to terms with the objec-tive reality that there is a multipo-lar world that excludes American hegemony,” spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said.

The latest tension comes against a backdrop of longterm anger in Washington at Russian election meddling and worries both in the United States and its European allies over Russia’s re-cent troop build up on the border of Ukraine.

The imprisonment of Alexei Navalny, who is effectively the last

open political opponent to Putin, has further spiked concerns in the West.

NATO backs up US The White House statement

listed in first place Moscow’s “ef-forts to undermine the conduct of free and fair democratic elections and democratic institutions in the United States and its allies and partners.”

This referred to allegations that Russian intelligence agencies mounted persistent disinforma-tion and dirty tricks campaigns during the 2016 and 2020 presi-dential elections, in part to help Donald Trump’s candidacy.

The White House said the sanctions likewise respond to “malicious cyber activities against the United States and its allies and partners,” refer-

ring to the massive so-called SolarWinds hack of US govern-ment computer systems last year.

The statement also called out Russia’s extraterritorial “target-ing” of dissidents and journalists and undermining of security in countries important to US nation-al security.

In addition, the Department of Treasury, together with the Euro-pean Union, Australia, Britain and Canada, sanctioned eight individ-uals and entities associated with Russia’s occupation of Crimea in Ukraine.

In Brussels, the NATO military alliance said US allies “support and stand in solidarity with the United States, following its 15 April announcement of actions to respond to Russia’s destabilizing activities.”

NATO members cited a “sus-tained pattern” of Russian hos-tility.

“We call on Russia to cease im-mediately its destabilizing behav-ior, and to uphold its international obligations,” they said.

Blinken visits Afghanistan in show of support after Biden announces withdrawalReuters | Washington

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken flew to Kabul yes-

terday in an unannounced visit to show support for the Afghan government a day after US Pres-ident Joe Biden said that he was pulling out US forces after nearly 20 years of war.

Biden acknowledged that US objectives in Afghanistan had become “increasingly unclear” over the past decade and set a deadline for withdrawing all US troops remaining in Afghan-istan by Sept. 11, exactly two decades after al Qaeda’s attacks on the United States that trig-gered the war.

Foreign troops under NATO command will also withdraw from Afghanistan in coordina-tion with the US pullout.

Blinken, arriving in Kabul after attending NATO talks in Brussels, met with Afghan Pres-ident Ashraf Ghani, whose gov-ernment remains embroiled in fierce fighting with Taliban insurgents while a US-backed peace process is shrouded in uncertainty.

The top US diplomat tried to reassure Ghani that despite the departure of US troops, the United States would remain committed to Afghanistan, say-ing Washington will “intensify” its diplomacy to do “everything we can” to advance efforts to secure a peace agreement be-tween Kabul and the insur-gents.

“The reason I’m here, so quickly after the president’s speech last night, is to demon-strate literally, by our presence, that we have an enduring an ongoing commitment to Af-ghanistan,” Blinken said at the embassy, according to a press pool report.

He was in Kabul for about eight hours.

The foreign troop withdraw-als have raised concerns that

the country could erupt in full-scale civil war, providing al Qa-eda space in which to rebuild and plan new attacks on US and other targets.

In his meeting with Ghani at the presidential palace, Blink-en assured the Afghan presi-dent that “the partnership is changing, but the partnership is enduring.”

Later at a press conference at the heavily fortified American embassy, where earlier he had greeted US soldiers, Blinken warned the Taliban that any attack on American troops as they pulled out would be met with “a very forceful response.”

Blinken also met with Ab-dullah Abdullah, the head of

Afghanistan’s High Council for National Reconciliation, who expressed support for the US decision.

“This does not mean the end of relations and cooperation between the two countries. A new chapter of relations and cooperation between the two countries has returned and we will continue our cooperation in various fields in this chapter,” Abdullah said in a statement.

Even as Blinken visited Ka-bul, the Taliban reiterated a call for an “immediate” withdrawal of all foreign forces, accusing Washington of breaching a Feb-ruary 2020 accord - secured by the Trump administration - to complete a US troop pullout by May 1.

The Taliban statement ap-peared to make an implicit threat, warning that “in princi-ple” their fighters would “take every necessary countermeas-ure, hence the American side will be held responsible for all future consequences.”

They also said they will “un-der no circumstance ever re-lent” on their goal of establish-ing a “pure Islamic system,” underscoring a deep difference with Kabul over the kind of gov-ernmental system that should be established in a peace agree-ment.

Myanmar security forces arrest prominent leader of anti-coup campaign

Reuters | Yangon

Myanmar security forces yesterday arrested one

of the main leaders of the cam-paign against military rule af-ter ramming him with a car as he led a motorbike protest ral-ly, friends and colleagues said.

Opponents of the Feb. 1 coup that ousted an elected govern-ment led by Nobel peace lau-reate Aung San Suu Kyi have kept up their campaign against the military this traditional New Year week with marches and various other shows of defiance.

“Our brother Wai Moe Na-ing was arrested. His motor-bike was hit by an unmarked police car,” Win Zaw Khiang, a member of a protest organis-ing group, said on social media.

Wai Moe Naing, a 25-year-old Muslim, has emerged as one of the most high-profile leaders of opposition to the coup.

Earlier, Reuters spoke to him by telephone as he was setting off to lead the rally in the cen-tral town of Monywa, about 700 km (435 miles) north of the main city of Yangon.

Video posted on social me-dia showed an oncoming car swerving into a group of mo-torbikes.

A spokesman for the junta could not be reached for com-

ment.Monywa has been one of

main centres of the pro-de-mocracy campaign with big rallies day after day and re-peated crackdowns by the se-curity forces.

Some colleagues said they feared for Wai Moe Naing’s safety.

The Swedish embassy said it was following his case and urged that all detainees be al-lowed proper health care and their human rights be respect-ed.

The US Embassy also con-demned the reported incident.

UK queen has to step into debate over Philip’s funeral outfitsReuters | London

Britain’s Queen Elizabeth has stepped in to settle a problem

over what senior royals should wear to her husband’s funeral, be-cause of concerns about whether Prince Harry and Prince Andrew should wear military uniforms, media reported yesterday.

Prince Philip died aged 99 last week and his funeral will be held at Windsor Castle on Saturday. Traditionally at such formal occa-sions, members of the royal family wear military uniforms, often re-flecting honorary titles they hold.

However, according to Brit-ish newspapers, there have been debates behind the scenes over what the queen’s son Andrew and grandson Harry should wear.

Harry, 36, the Duke of Sussex, quit all his royal duties and lost all his military patronages in January after moving to Los Angeles with wife Meghan and son Archie, but wanted to wear the dress uniform he wore for his wedding day.

Andrew, 61, the Duke of York, stepped away from official en-gagements because of his “ill-judged” association with the late disgraced US financier Jeffrey Epstein.

Papers reported that he wished

to attend the funeral in the uni-form of admiral, a honorary rank he was awarded to mark his 60th birthday but he deferred until his return to public life.

Compounding the issue was the fact that the two royals are the only ones to have seen active service - Harry in Afghanistan and Andrew in the 1982 Falkland Islands conflict.

Buckingham Palace has de-clined to comment on the reports but according to the Daily Mail, the 94-year-old queen had now decided all royals should wear mourning suits to avoid any em-barrassment.

K Madhavan named president of Disney, Star IndiaTDT | Mumbai

The Walt Disney Company India and Star India yester-

day announced K Madhavan as its president of both the firms.

Rebecca Campbell, chairman of international operations and direct-to-consumer businesses at Walt Disney, made the an-nouncement and said that K Madhavan will drive the strat-egy and growth of the group in India.

In this role, Madhavan will drive the strategy and growth of the Company in India, with re-sponsibility for the vast Disney, Star and Hotstar businesses and operations spanning across en-tertainment, sports and region-al channels, and direct-to-con-sumer. This includes oversight of channel distribution and advertising sales, as well as a thriving local content produc-tion business which currently is responsible for the creation of 18,000 hours of original con-tent across fiction, non-fiction, sports, and movies in eight lan-guages.

“For the past several months, I have had the pleasure of work-ing directly with KM and have seen firsthand how he has

adeptly managed our India business, which has been and will continue to be critical to our global and regional strat-egy,” said Campbell. “A skilled leader with an extensive back-ground in media, KM has taken our vast Star networks and local content production businesses to new heights despite contin-ued industry evolution and sig-nificant challenges due to the pandemic.”

“I am very proud to have the opportunity to lead the incredibly talented and pas-sionate team we have in India, and to further build upon our strong portfolio of channels and

high-quality programming,” said Madhavan.

News in brief u The United States has cancelled this

week’s planned deployment of two warships to the Black Sea, Turkish officials and media said, amid high tensions between Russia and Ukraine. Turkish diplomatic sources said the passage of the first ship through the Bosphorus due did not take place. Anadolu state news agency

said both deployments, scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday, have been cancelled with Ankara not yet informed of any possible rescheduling.

u The humanitarian and economic crisis unleashed by the eruption of the La Soufriere volcano on the Caribbean island of Saint Vincent will last months and could extend to nearby islands, a UN official warned. “It is a crisis that will require a humanitarian response but also a response in terms of rehabilitation” which could last for several months, said Didier Trebucq, the United Nations coordinator for Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean.

u France plans to allow cameras into

courtrooms for the first time as part of reforms to the country’s justice system, Justice Minister Eric Dupond-Moretti said after a cabinet meeting. Dupond-Moretti, a lawyer who joined President Emmanuel Macron’s cabinet last year, unveiled the draft bill that the government hopes will restore confidence in the courts. He cited a survey from

French research institute Cevipof that found only 48% of French people had confidence in their judiciary, compared with 69% in Germany and 61% in Britain.

u A white former police officer faced her first court appearance yesterday in the traffic-stop shooting of a Black motorist that has engulfed a small Minneapolis suburb with four straight days of bitter conflict between protesters and police. Kim Potter, who quit her job on the Brooklyn Center force two days after Daunte Wright’s death, was charged Wednesday with second-degree manslaughter in what her chief said appeared to be a case of confusing her Taser with her handgun.

How Ramadan is celebrated around the world

Over a billion Muslims welcome the month with different customs but same focus on spirituality

Muslims worldwide are wel-coming the holy month of Ramadan with much antici-

pation and delight. Traditionally marked by the sighting

of the crescent moon, more than 1 bil-lion Muslims will celebrate and reflect on their faith as they fast from sunrise to sunset for the whole month.

Designed to purify the body and focus on spirituality, Ramadan is a time when traditions and customs are highlighted, giving each country its unique spirit.

Every year, Muslims prepare them-selves and their homes to focus on the sanctities of the month, as it commem-orates the revelation of the Qur’an to the Prophet Mohammed — significant peace comes with that. Homes are calm-er, prayers are heard across cities, iftar meals to break the fast are prepared early, youths volunteer and spread joy to the less fortunate, and family gath-erings abound — these are just some of the highlights of the month.

There is unity and closeness; humble, shared meals; the strengthening of bonds; and spiritual reflection.

Muslims and Christians perform acts of charity by providing large banquets in front of mosques.

With plenty of food to go around, it does not matter if you are poor or rich — the shared experience of generosity brings people together.

Across Saudi Arabia, Ramadan rit-uals are sacred in many households. As the sun starts to set, homes are filled with the smell of cardamom and Arabic coffee, which is prepared

for iftar. There is also a heady mix of fried

dough, prepping for samboosa, and the sweet smell of karkadeh, a hibiscus tea. Across the Kingdom, recitals of the Qur’an can be heard as family members start trickling into their elders’ homes with dishes of Arabic sweets such as lugaymat and atayef (thin pancakes stuffed with cream or crushed fried almonds with syrup).

Saudis break their fast with a few dates and milk or a yogurt drink some-times mixed with mint leaves.

Some families arrange a drinks tray of qamar al-din (apricot juice), soobya (a traditional Hijaz drink made from barley or bread doused in water for a few days and sweetened with sugar and raisins) and tamarind juice. Meals are light, and families relax after iftar with traditional sweets and Arabic coffee before Taraweeh prayers.

A very common custom among fami-lies of the Hijaz region is to burn mastic (a natural resin or gum extracted from

mastic trees) and place jugs above the incense to mix the taste of Zamzam wa-ter (filled afterward) with the incense.

Small tin cups called tutuwah are also used to drink Zamzam water, infused with the smell of mastic incense.

In Egypt, children run around their neighborhoods swinging a small fanoos (lantern) and singing “wahawi ya waha-wi,” a folkloric song that celebrates the start of Ramadan. Egyptians decorate their homes, streets and alleyways with fawanees (plural of fanoos).

Known for their hearty cuisine, their meals are heavy for iftar and light for sahoor, the last meal of the night before resuming the fast.

Families and friends gather in mosques and pray alongside each other. After concluding prayers, they gather in homes or at cafes under lights and hanging lanterns enjoying shisha and tea. A deeply rooted Ramadan custom in Egypt and across the Levant is the mesaharati, a man who wanders neigh-borhoods with a small drum waking

people up an hour or two before dawn for sahoor, chanting “wake up sleepy, proclaim the oneness of the Everlast-ing.”

The mesaharati, usually a neighbour-hood elder, calls each neighbor by name before heading to the next neighbor-hood.

Despite the war in Syria, many night markets are filled with families shop-ping or enjoying tea while tradition-al songs and folklore dances are per-formed for the public. Another ongoing tradition is the hakawati, or storyteller. Derived from the word for story, hek-aya, the hakawati tells tales of myths, heroes and fables, as well as stories from the Qur’an.

While 40 percent of Lebanese are Christian, Ramadan is celebrated by all in Lebanon, with an abundance of stuffed grape leaves, hummus, fattoush and tabbouleh. Charities, civic organi-zations and businesses host fundraising iftars, and mosques and churches hold clothing drives and distribute Ramadan baskets.

In Iraq, cities have come alive again after years of nightly curfews, and pub-lic spaces are filled with people of all ages enjoying post-iftar sweets and tea, shopping and an evening stroll. Locals celebrate together as cities are filled with colors and string lights.

Mheibes, a traditional Iraqi game, is played in national championships. It is played with two teams of at least 20, with a ring hidden in the palm of a hand, and a member of the opposing team intimidating the players to see

who has it.Among the main dishes in Iraqi

households are a lentil soup dish and a stew served with rice or thareed (bro-ken pieces of flatbread steeped in the stew) with chunks of lamb. After iftar, Iraqis enjoy sweet tea and desserts such as mahalabiya, zalabia and halawat sha’iriya (golden vermicelli noodles).

So while the spiritual intention is the same, different communi-ties display their own unique spirit of Ramadan, preserving customs for younger generations to observe and keep.

MethodPlace the oil in a pan and

deep-fry potato slices till g o l d e n b r o w n . R e m o v e , drain of excess oil and set aside.

Soak the rice in warm water with some salt for 10 minutes.

Boil the rice with salt till 3/4 cooked. Rinse and set aside.

Cook the meat in a pressure cooker for 30 minutes, or till tender.

Add some oil to a deep, heavy-bottomed saucepan and fry the onion till golden, then add the garlic, jalapenos, cooked potatoes and meat. Mix well, then add the baharat and the

whole spices.Stir in the tomato paste and

salt, and simmer till mixture is thick.

Once the mixture has reached the desired consistency, place the rice on top. Sprinkle the top of the rice with 3 tablespoons of water, cover the saucepan and leave to steam over low heat for 15 minutes.

Remove from heat, and allow to rest for 10 minutes before serving.

To serve, place the serving dish over the saucepan and up-end it, so that its contents end up on the serving dish – rice at the bottom, and the meat mix-ture on top.

Pa-ac eager to join ONE ChampionshipTDT | Manila

Former BRAVE Combat Fed-eration fighter Jomar Pa-ac

is raring to mount a comeback after almost two years of inac-tivity.

This time, the 24-year-old Team Lakay stalwart wants to join the Singapore-based ONE Championship promotion.

“It’s like the best thing to do,” said Pa-ac, who sports a 6-2 win-loss record.

In the Bahrain-based promo-tion, the Igorot warrior earned three wins and one loss in the flyweight division.

Since scoring a unanimous decision victory over Satya Be-huria of India in March 2019, the Filipino warrior has not fought.

Pa-ac juggles his time tak-ing law school, currently in his sophomore year at the Cordille-ra Career Development College in La Trinidad, Benguet, while training with Team Lakay.

But due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Pa-ac was forced to take a hiatus on law school, which actually paved the way for more quality training with Team Lakay.

“My interest in MMA re-mained the same. Although I am taking law school, but the fire is still burning within me,” said Paac.

Coach Mark Sangiao, for his part, is supportive of his stu-dent’s endeavors.

“We’ll see the best promo-tion pick for him. But for now,

it’s really hard to negotiate. I also hope he finishes his law school soon,” said the 42-year-old Sangiao.

Pa-ac said that not only his-physical prowess, but more importantly his values outside of the cage have helped him to better himself.

“When it comes to handling defeat, I see from my fellow Filipino fighters their desire to bounce back after defeat. That is also my motivation,” said Pa-ac.

Despite the pandemic, Pa-ac has found ways to keep himself in tip-top shape, training with

his teammates like Joshua Pa-cio and Danny Kingad at Team Lakay’s state-of-the-art facility in La Trinidad, Benguet.

“I am inspired by their ded-ication in training even when they don’t have fights. Still, they are in the gym training reli-giously every day. They inspire me to do the same,” he added.

On December 2, 2016, Pa-ac made his successful Brave CF debut at “Brave 2: Dynasty” at the Khalifa Sports City Arena in Isa Town, Bahrain. He defeated Haider “The Giant” Farman, 23, of Pakistan via unanimous decision.

On March 31, 2017, Pa-ac de-feated Atif “Little Hawk” Mo-hamed, 25, of Bahrain via split decision at “Brave 4: Unstop-pable” at the IPIC Arena in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

On May 11, 2018, the Team Lakay fighter was knocked out by Hussain “Iron” Ayyad, 25, of Bahrain at “Brave 12: KHK Leg-acy” at Balai Sarbini in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Santiago to play for Philippines in Sea GamesTDT | Manila

Jaja Santiago, arguably the best Filipina volleyball play-

er today, will definitely play for the Philippines in the 2021 Southeast Asian Games from November 21 to December 2 in Vietnam.

The 25-year-old ace spiker has confirmed that she will suit up for the national women’s team after a championship stint with Ageo Medics in the Japan Volleyball Cup tournament re-cently.

“Definitely, I will be playing in the SEA Games. I have al-ready reached an agreement even before I signed up with Ageo Medics. It was included in the contract that I will be allowed two weeks off to play in Vietnam. I will return to Japan in August,” said Santiago.

She was sorely missed in the 2019 Sea Games squad due to bureaucratic problems with the Larong Volleyball ng Pilipinas, the national sports association for the sport back then.

The Philippines finished fourth in the biennial meet.

Santiago played for the Phil-ippines in the 2015 and 2017 editions of the event, as well as in the 2018 Asian Games.

Meanwhile, after leading Saitama Ageo Medics to a gold-medal finish in the Japan V Cup, Santiago revealed that she received an offer from Ja-pan to change nationality.

“In the middle of the league, they already asked me to stay

for more years. They want me to change my nationality actu-ally,” Santiago said.

Should the rising volleyball star grab Japan’s citizenship offer, she gets the chance to represent the Land of the Ris-ing Sun in bigger stages such as the Olympics and World Cham-pionship.

Japan is known for its volley-ball program, with its national teams placing 7th and 9th in the latest Federation Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) ranking for women’s and men’s, respec-

tively.“Well, it’s my dream to play at

the Olympics but I want to help the country first. For that goal, I want to be with my fellow Filipinos,” Santiago said.

In 2019, the Larong Volleyball ng Pilipinas failed to get a clear-ance from the Saitama-based club for the 6-foot-5 ace to par-ticipate in the Sea Games due to conflict schedule.

Santiago also represented the country in the 2015 Asian U-23 Women’s Championships, 2016 and 2017 AVC Asian Women’s Club Championship, 2017 Asian Women’s Seniors Champion-ship, and 2016 FIVB Women’s Club World Championship, and 2018 Asian Games.

Eight years ago, the 17-year-old Jaja was invited to try out for a spot in the University of California-Los Angeles (UCLA) women’s volleyball team. The teen Santiago declined the of-fer.

Magomedov looking to crash BRAVE CF Lightweight party by calling out KubanychbekTDT | Manama

Kamil Magomedov entered the BRAVE CF Lightweight

roster and has made his name known with an interesting proposition; to fight Abdis-alam ‘’Omok’’ Kubanychbek while the current champ Amin Ayoub figures things out with title contender Ahmed Amir.

Kubanychbek earned the right to challenge for the world title when he beat Rolando Dy at BRAVE CF 47: Asian Domi-nation. He was set to face off against the winner of Ayoub and Amir, when Amir was forced to postpone his title shot due to injury, throwing Abdisalam’s plans in turmoil. Now ‘’Omok’’ needs to make a decision of waiting for the title shot or maintain himself active.

Magomedov is new to the stacked BRAVE CF Lightweight

division, but he has signed with the fastest growing pro-motion in the world BRAVE CF with one goal in mind - to be the champion - and is looking for a fast-track to a title shot.

“I came to BRAVE CF with one goal - to be a champion,” says Magomedov, who made his challenge to Kubanychbek using a social media post of himself next to the Kyrgyz star.

“A fight with Kubanych-bek is the best way to get a title shot, while the champion Amin Ayoub and Ahmed Amir sort it out,” says Magomedov. “We must decide who will be next.”

The challenge received a lot of response from fans, media, and even other fighters. Some believe it would be an easy challenge for the Kyrgyzstani warrior, some believe this would derail Kubanychbek’s chances, and others find it an unreasonable challenge as Ma-gomedov is yet to debut with the promotion.

Mercedes admit Red Bull ‘edge’ ahead of Imola showdownToto Wolff is under no illusion that Mercedes have proved they can match the obvious speed of this season’s Red Bull car

AFP | Imola

Lewis Hamilton and his Mercedes team expect Max Verstappen and Red

Bull to bounce back and give them a torrid test of speed at this weekend’s Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, the second round of this year’s world championship.

Three weeks on from the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix, where Hamilton dug deep into his reserves to conjure up his record 96th Formula One victory ahead of the Dutch-man, the seven-time champion knows it will be a challenge to repeat his 2020 win at the old Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari.

Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff was delighted to see Ham-ilton triumph in the opener, but said he is under no illusion that Mercedes have proved they can match the obvious speed of this season’s Red Bull car.

“We may have won the first round, but we are under no il-lusions that this is going to be an easy season,” he said.

“Our car still lacks speed on a

single lap and Red Bull have the edge at the moment.”

In Bahrain, Verstappen se-cured pole by three-tenths, but Hamilton made the most of strategy and race-craft to win, with the aid of a costly error by the Dutchman, by just sev-en-tenths of a second.

Hamilton’s Bahrain victory showcased not only his speed, but his experience and supreme race-management, qualities that he will need again this season as he seeks to fend off the chal-lenge for his crown from Ver-stappen.

Hamilton rode his luck to win the 2020 Emilia Romagna race at Imola with some aplomb – and the help of a timely Safety Car intervention -- last Novem-ber as he roared towards the

drivers’ title. His win was the third triumph

in a run of five as he took advan-tage of Mercedes’ superiority and team-mate Valtteri Bottas’s ill fortune to take command of the title race on the narrow and bumpy old track, back in use for the first time since 2006.

Hamilton made it plain last year that he loved the “old school” nature of the circuit set in the rolling vineyards of Emil-ia Romagna and Wolff shared his feelings.

“It’s where won secured our seventh constructors champi-onship that weekend,” he said.

“And it’s such an historic and iconic venue, which the drivers really enjoy – twisty and fast with a variety of corners.”

Apart from Hamilton, only

one other driver has previous-ly won at Imola – two-time champion Fernando Alonso, who has returned to race for the Alpine-branded Renault team this year.

Alonso will be hunting an im-provement on his pointless run in Bahrain, where he retired, as will fellow veteran and four-time champion Sebastian Vettel after a laboured first outing for Aston Martin.

Their experience may help at Imola, but it is likely to be Red Bull setting the pace in a thrilling duel with Mercedes – with McLaren, Ferrari and AlphaTauri in hot pursuit.

terday in mourning the loss of former national volleyball team star Jassim Al Nabhan.

Al Nabhan was struggling with an illness, according to reports. He was 38.

Al Nabhan was a key fig-ure in Bahrain’s volleyball community. As a player, he was a star with Muharraq Club and won several na-tional championships on the local and Gulf level. He was also a Most Valuable Player-award winner, and played as a professional overseas.

Riffa aim to secure league crown• Riffa can clinch the 2020/2021 title with a win tonight against Busaiteen and a loss by East Riffa tomorrow against Al Ahli

TDT | Manama

Riffa have an opportunity to secure the title this week-

end in the 2020/2021 Nasser bin Hamad Bahrain Premier Football League.

As part of the 15th week of ac-tion, Riffa will be taking on cel-lar-dwellers Busaiteen tonight.

A victory would give them 40 points with three matches re-maining. That would put them 12 points clear of their closest rivals East Riffa, who take on Al Ahli tomorrow.

If East Riffa drop any points against Ahli, Riffa would clinch the title. East Riffa are cur-rently in second place with 28 points.

This weekend’s action is the first to take place during the holy month of Ramadhan. Riffa’s game is scheduled for an 8pm kick-off. Other games this evening will see Al Najma go against Budaiya at 8.30pm, followed by Malkiya taking on Manama at 10.30pm.

The second game tomorrow features Muharraq facing de-fending champions Hidd.

Over their 14 matches to date, Riffa have won 12 times, drawn

once and lost once.East Riffa have nine wins in

second place on the table, while Manama are third with eight victories.

Foden fires Man City into Champions League semi

AFP | Berlin

Manchester City set up a blockbuster Champions

League semi-final against Paris Saint-Germain as Phil Foden’s second-half winner sealed a 2-1 victory at Borussia Dort-mund on Wednesday to send the Premier League leaders through 4-2 on aggregate.

England midfielder Jude Bellingham gave Dortmund an early lead, but a second-half Riyad Mahrez penalty and Foden’s powerful strike moved City into the last four of Eu-rope’s top club competition for the second time.

Having also scored the 90th-minute winner to give City a 2-1 victory in last week’s first leg in Manchester, Eng-land international Foden again broke Dortmund hearts.

“We are f inally in the semi-finals and we’re really happy,” Guardiola told Sky with his team bidding to win four titles this season.

“The guys deserve it because what they have achieved this season is incredible.”

Guardiola was full of praise for Mauricio Pochettino’s PSG after they reached the last four by squeezing past holders Bay-ern Munich on away goals.

Real frustrate Liverpool to move into last four

AFP | London

Jurgen Klopp bemoaned Liverpool’s inability to turn

dominance into goals as Real Madrid held out for a 0-0 draw at Anfield on Wednesday to progress to the semi-finals of the Champions League 3-1 on aggregate.

M o h a m e d S a l a h a n d Georginio Wijnaldum were guilty of wasting glorious op-portunities to get Klopp’s men back into the tie as they failed to replicate a remarkable re-covery from 3-0 down to beat Barcelona 4-3 on aggregate at the semi-final stage two years ago.

“We didn’t lose the tie to-night. We lost it definitely in Madrid but even if we drew there 0-0, we would proba-bly still be playing because we didn’t score,” said Klopp, whose side now face a battle just to qualify for next sea-son’s Champions League via a top-four finish in the Premier League.

“It’s a little bit ourselves this year. We had games here in the Premier League where we just

don’t finish the situation often enough.

“We know how often Mo Salah finished these chances with closed eyes and in this moment (he did) not.”

Madrid were far from their best, but did not need to be to set up a semi-final clash with Chelsea as Los Blancos extended their unbeaten run in all competitions to 14 games.

“We knew we had to suffer tonight, but in the end we got what we wanted, which was to go through,” said Zidane.

“We knew they’d start fast and they were really good in the opening 15 minutes, but that’s normal. In the quar-ter-finals of the Champions League you have to dig in and we did that and got through.”

‘Awful’ Djokovic knocked out in Monte CarloRafael Nadal waltzes past Grigor Dimitrov, into Monte-Carlo quarters

• Novak Djokovic knocked out by Dan Evans in last 16

AFP | Monte Carlo

Novak Djokovic crashed out of the Monte Carlo Masters on Thursday

following an “awful perfor-mance” in a 6-4, 7-5 defeat by Dan Evans, while 11-time cham-pion Rafael Nadal powered into the quarter-finals.

World number one Djokovic was broken five times by the Briton in their last-16 clash and suffered his first loss of the year, having won the Australian Open for the ninth time in February.

The 33rd-ranked Evans, who dumped out this month’s Miami Open winner Hubert Hurkacz in the previous round, will play 11th seed David Goffin for a place in the semi-finals.

Goffin beat US Open run-ner-up Alexander Zverev 6-4, 7-6 (9/7) earlier in the day.

An out-of-sorts Djokovic pro-duced an uncharacteristic 45 unforced errors against Evans, who hadn’t won a tour-level match on clay since April 2017 before this week.

“To be honest this has been one of the worst matches from my side I can recall in the last few years,” said Djokovic, the

Monte Carlo champion in 2013 and 2015.

“I felt awful on the court over-all. Nothing worked. Just one of those days.

“It was just an awful perfor-mance. I can’t take any posi-tives away from this match. It definitely leaves a bitter feeling exiting the court this way.”

Djokovic fell 3-0 behind af-ter dropping his opening two service games but recovered to 4-all before Evans broke again, wrapping up the set in the fol-lowing game.

The Serb looked to be on the road to recovery as he surged 3-0 ahead in the second, but Evans -- facing Djokovic for the first time -- got back on serve and defended a break point to

hold when trailing 4-3.

‘One for the grandkids’ While the Evans backhand

slice proved particularly effec-tive, it was a double fault from Djokovic that handed his oppo-nent the key break in the 11th game and condemned the top seed to defeat.

“It hasn’t sunk in yet,” Evans said in his post-match interview. “I couldn’t quite believe the last ball went over the net. It nearly didn’t.”

“You can never be confident coming into such a big match like that against Novak,” he add-ed.

“The biggest thing is, you have got to believe you can win. I can walk on saying it, but you have

really got to believe it.“It will be one to savour for

maybe after the tournament, to tell the kids and grandkids that you beat the World No. 1. It is a nice one.”

Nadal required just 55 min-utes to demolish Bulgarian 14th seed Grigor Dimitrov 6-1, 6-1.

“(I am) sorry for him. He played a bad match. That is the truth,” Nadal said of his oppo-nent who was struggling with severe toothache.

“He made a lot of mistakes. I was there. I was doing the right thing, but it is true that today was more his fault than my good tennis.”

The third-ranked Spaniard is the highest seed left in the draw following Djokovic’s loss and the withdrawal of Daniil Med-vedev after he tested positive for Covid-19.

Nadal will meet Andrey Ru-blev or Roberto Bautista Agut in the next round.

To be honest this has been one of the worst matches from my side I can recall in the last few years. I felt awful on the court overall. Nothing worked. Just
