Dear Parents, As you are aware, we use ClassCharts to record all the positive (and negative!) behaviours of your son/daughter. ClassChart points equate to particular rewards as shown in the table below. Each Summer, following GCSE exams, our Year 11 pupils have the opportunity to become involved in the National Citizen Service programme. Approximately 60 of our Year 11 leavers participate in the NCS four-phase residential experience which is designed to provide a sense of adventure and develop a range of skills linked to social action. This is a national programme and last year over 1500 young people across Lancashire took part in the scheme, raising over £22,000 for various organisations in Preston. Best of all, the cost per pupil is only £50 and a special offer price of £30 is available until Friday 23 rd November. Over recent years Broughton has been an active partner, so much so we have been designated a Champion School for 2017/2018 and awarded the ‘Gold’ Award by the NCS Trust. If you are a parent of a Year 11 pupil please encourage your son/daughter to participate. As you are aware, we now have new conference and meeting rooms available for teacher training. This means we no longer have to move pupils out of classrooms to accommodate all the numerous training events we host at Broughton. These facilities are also available to hire by firms, businesses, public bodies and any other organisation. You may work in such a group and looking for a suitable venue for a meeting or training event. If so, please read the attached leaflet. If you wish to come and look at our facilities you are most welcome. Please contact Mrs Laura Adams, Receptionist/Teaching School Administrator tel: 01772 863849 or email [email protected]. Our rates are highly competitive and all income generated will be used to improve the facilities for the benefit of all pupils. Newsletter No 11 19 th November 2018

If your son/daughter is ever absent from school it is expected that they will have to copy up/catch up on any work they have missed. The reasons for this are fairly obvious; we do not want them to have any gaps in their learning, especially when it comes to revising for tests. This is a good habit and applies to all pupils in Years 7-11. Your support and practical help with this matter will be much appreciated. “Have you caught up?”, “Have you got a copy of all the work you missed whilst you were off?”, “Make sure you catch up.” Nowadays it is much easier for pupils to have access to another pupil’s book by simply taking a photo on their

mobile phone (with the other pupil’s agreement and teacher’s permission). Last Friday was ‘BBC Children in Need’ Day and almost the entire school came in non-uniform and nearly £1,000 was raised for the appeal. Parents of Year 7 children are invited to a Family Social Quiz on Thursday 13th December. This is always a great success and extremely well-attended. The evening, organised by the PTFA, is for all the

family, so not only are parents and Year 7 students invited, but so too are older/younger brothers and sisters … along with grandparents and any other relatives or friends. There will be six teams: 7B, 7C, 7H, 7N, 7R, 7S. The evening will be loosely based around the six tutor groups all getting to know each other and working as a team to answer some (easy!) questions and overcome some challenges. There will be an opportunity to enjoy some food prepared by our Head Chef, Jim O’Connor. As always at such events, there

will be a raffle and we will be grateful for any suitable prizes. Please take them to reception

Finally, the first of two Year 11 Parents’ Evenings is on Thursday 29th November 2018 and we look forward to seeing all parents of Year 11 pupils. As always, if you are happy or unhappy with any aspect of life here at Broughton, please do not hesitate to get in touch. My email address is [email protected]. Chris Morris, Headteacher

Last week saw some wonderful acts auditioning for this year’s talent show, which will take place on the last day of term. A very appreciative audience came to support and all gave a donation to Children in Need raising a total of £29.82.

A big thank you to all pupils and staff involved.

Mrs Fahey and Mr Starkie

I was so impressed with the respect shown by every single pupil in the moving Remembrance Assembly held on Friday 9th November. From the silent entry to the respectful listening, it was really very touching. The girls who played the last post (Katey Bledge and Megan Sloan) did so with skill and it really set the tone for the whole morning. In addition, on Remembrance Sunday, I attended a local parade and was very pleased to see a number of our pupils not only taking part, but also attending voluntarily to pay their respects to those who have fought for our freedom. Well done, Broughton.

Sporting News - England Football League Girls’ Cup

On Thursday, Broughton entered two teams into the annual England Football League Girls’ Cup. The tournament was organised by Preston North End at Play Football, with the winner going on to represent Preston North End in the North West finals after Christmas. There were eighteen schools from across Preston and South Ribble entered into the competition, some schools with two teams. The ultimate aim was to get through to the final, being held at Wembley before the Football League Trophy Final. Broughton 1 won two of their group games (Balshaws and Longridge) and, in what was a very tight league, narrowly missed out on going through to the quarter finals on goal difference. Broughton 2 had a flying start, winning all their group games (Holy Cross, Albany, Our Lady's and Moor Park) and only conceding one goal to send them into the quarter finals as group winners. They met Balshaws in the quarters, and despite going down 1-0 early on, they fought back to a well-deserved 2-1 victory to take them into the semi-finals against St. Cecilia's. This was the most physically contested match of the day, with both teams putting in strong challenges and looking dangerous up front. Broughton were more clinical in front of goal, with Monae Hetherington-Smith, Macy Darley and Emilia Vickers all rewarded with goals for their tireless efforts. At the back, Molly Kelly-Barker and Phoebe Glynn dealt with every kind of attack from St. Cecilia’s and thwarted any efforts. It was a closer game than the score line suggested, but more than enough to take Broughton into the final. Southlands were the opposition, and within only a minute of the match starting Broughton were 1-0 from some excellent work down the right from Sarah Reid. Broughton continued to look dangerous on the ball, and more goals followed from Emilia Vickers, Monae Hetherington-Smith and Macy Darley. Broughton were convincing and worthy 4-0 winners. A fantastic effort from all the girls, unbeaten by all competition and only conceding two goals. Well done!

County Hockey Success for Ebony Muirhead, 8R Ebony Muirhead recently played for the air cadets’ county hockey team (Lancs and Cumbria) and, following trials, was selected to represent the northern region team at RAF Cranwell. Ebony went to RAF Cranwell in Lincolnshire last weekend and competed as part of the Air Cadets’ team for the northern region. The matches were against teams from five other regions including Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Ebony's team were successful winners of the tournament keeping five clean sheets in the process a new record. Ebony has now gained a first place medal and a Northern blue coat of arms badge for her uniform which is a highly prestigious award. Very well done, Ebony.

Year 9 Textiles Year 9 Textiles pupils have done a superb job of designing and making shorts. In Year 9, pupils make a garment for the first time which involves accuracy and high quality work for their finished garment to be wearable. Very impressed Year 9. Well done. Thank you to those of you who have donated material to Textiles.

Root of the Week A root word is a word or part of a word which can form the basis of new words, through the addition of prefixes and suffixes. Understanding the meanings of common word roots can therefore help you work out the meanings of new words when you come across them. If pupils use the Root of the Week correctly in any form and label it, they will be awarded a point on ClassCharts.
