Dear Friends Despite the shorter days and colder weather, you will be glad to know that Carol Martin and our volunteers have been planning many delightful Friends’ events designed to warm the heart, lift the spirits and entertain us during the winter months. NEW LUNCHTIME SERIES: Of particular interest is a new lunchtime series entitled The Seaborn Conversations: Talking about Theatre… The details are contained in an enclosed invitation. These Conversations will provide us with opportunities to hear interesting talks and share conversations with special guests and theatre-loving Friends as well as partake of refreshments and an optional tour around our new premises. We are delighted that Lee Lewis and Penny Cook will be joining us on Monday 14th August and Nancye Hayes on 11th September. As with many of our events, places are limited, so I urge you to book without delay. GRANTS: Since our last Newsletter, the Foundation has awarded another round of generous grants to individuals and performing arts organisations to assist financially in the development of their work. These include independent, community-focussed and youth groups as well as innovative projects and, in line with Dr Seaborn’s wishes, creative initiatives emanating from more mainstream theatre groups as well. PERFORMING ARTS COLLECTION: Our archivist Neil Pollock with the assistance of volunteers has continued his wonderful work re-organising, cataloguing and rationalising our Performing Arts Collection. Visitors continue to congratulate us on our decision to retain and house this valuable Collection and for our dedicated efforts to strive to make our resources available for research and education. SHOWS FOR CHILDREN: As you will recall, part of our Collection contains an amazing array of marionettes and puppets. Maddy Slabacu has been our expert consultant. Her Horizon Theatre Company for Children and Youth is holding performances at 11am and 1pm on Sunday 23rd July at Wiley Park (see this Newsletter) and she hopes to organise a Punch and Judy-style performance at our Foundation in a few weeks time.
Please let us know if you are interested in receiving an invitation. Your young friends, children and grandchildren are very welcome as are the young at heart.
THEATRE PARTIES: Our theatre parties are always enjoyable and our budget-priced film and light lunch mornings have proved to be a great success too. Next year the Ensemble Theatre celebrates its 60th Anniversary and our next theatre party will be to its current production of the award-winning comedy Neville’s Island starring the ‘Chaser Boys’ of TV fame. An optional lunch with our Friends will follow at Bayly’s Restaurant. Bell Shakespeare will be presenting The Merchant of Venice at the Opera House later this year and we are planning another theatre party with opportunities to meet for refreshments beforehand and dinner afterwards. Dates, times and booking details are included in this Newsletter. Please read through the theatrical treats Carol has described for us in this Newsletter and consider bringing friends and family. However, the excellent seats Carol obtains for us are often in short supply so it’s wise to book early to secure your seats.
SPECIAL THANKS: Our work assisting the performing arts is greatly enhanced by the wonderful support of our Friends. Some give their time and others give much-needed financial support. Our grateful thanks to you all.
VALE ANN (Dickie) BROOKS: We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Mrs. Ann Brooks, a longtime Friend and supporter of the Foundation. We will miss her warm smile and gentle, encouraging presence at our functions. Our website contains a number of delightful photos of Ann and her son Dr Bill Brooks at our 30th Anniversary Dinner last year. We extend our deepest sympathy to Bill and to all members of Ann’s family’.
Thank you, once again for your valuable, much- appreciated and ongoing support.
