School Athletics Carnival 2014

Our school athletics carnival for 2014 was held on Thursday the 29th of May at the Coffs Harbour International Stadium. There were a great number of students competing and the weather was great. The students represented the school in true Toormina style and a great day was had by the students, teachers and staff. Congratulations, once again, students on your behaviour and the way you represented Toormina High School on the sporting field.

A huge thankyou goes to Ben Sonter of Yr 11 for some of these great action shots that he took at the Athletics Carnival!

RELAY FOR LIFE 2014Trudging continuously for 23 hours around a wet and muddy sportsground with no electricity and minimal shelter at the beginning of winter does not sound very appealing. However, when you are inspired to help in the fight against cancer the adverse conditions shrink into insignificance.

Over fifty of our inspired students and staff participated in this year’s Relay For Life on the weekend and were able to maintain a full 23 hours of continuous walking. Students raised funds in the lead up to the relay and then continued to collect money during our school’s now legendary ‘Miss Relay’ pageant. The students were particularly impressive and conducted themselves in a manner that would make all members of our school community proud. Through the emotionally moving ‘Survivor’s Walk’ and ‘Candlelight Ceremony of Hope’ to the stirring sound of the lone piper at the crack of dawn, our students walked on supporting each other and the great cause that this event represents.

All of the staff who attended were particularly pleased with how our students worked together to assist each other and contribute to the overall wellbeing of their fellow students, staff and other relay teams. On behalf of all of our Relay For Life participants I would like to thank everyone who made financial contributions to this significant community event.

DEPUT Y PRINCIPAL’S COLUMN

Dear Parents,

It has been a busy fortnight at Toormina High School as our students completed examinations, and teachers and students participated in the athletics carnival, Relay For Life and the Year 10 Careers Expo. I’d like to acknowledge the hard work of the PE Department and Head Teacher Mr Deam for their efforts in hosting another outstanding athletics carnival. The weather was ideal and it was wonderful to see so many students, staff and parents enjoying the atmosphere. It is also important that I acknowledge the tireless efforts of Mr Anderson and Miss Rayner for their work with the Relay For Life team, and of course all of the students and staff who trudged through rain and mud for a worthy cause.

As we are increasingly reliant on the support of parents and the local community to assist our school in providing students with opportunities to engage in extra-curricular activities, such as sporting competitions, it is important that I update you about changes to Departmental and Toormina High School policies. In line with Department of Education policy, our school now requires that parents who transport students, other than their own child, as part of a school excursion must have completed a Working with Children Check. Parents can complete and submit these documents through the Roads and Traffic Authority. By specifying that your role is as a volunteer with Toormina High School, the check should be completed free of charge. Your assistance in completing this check and forwarding a copy of the paperwork to the school would be much appreciated.

Best Wishes

J Bellette - Deputy Principal

Congratulations to two outstanding THS Musicians who excelled in the recent Coffs Harbour Eisteddfod. Kieran Lopes of Year 10 won the Open Champion-ship playing saxophone (accompanied by Mei Wei Lim) and was also awarded the Open Aggregate Trophy (highest aggregate in any three sections), and a $250 Dr Pierre de Bisscop Scholarship. Drew Gilchrist of Year 8 won the Junior Championship playing clarinet. Both students are excellent ambassadors for our school and have performed at our MADD concerts and are both members of our school band. Congratulations!!!

Bev Babbage - Music Teacher

NORTH COAST CHS TENNIS

Luke Field, Hudson Kacsics, Ben Field and James Benecke played in the semi-final of the North Coast CHS Tennis on Friday the 30th May in Kempsey. The boys played well but unfortunately lost to Camden Haven High 6 sets to 2. They played against a very strong side with players holding current top 10 rankings for their ages in Australia. The team once again exhibited excellent sportmanship and represented Toormina High School commendably. Well done to our players for achieving such great results this year. Phil Ward - Team Manager

Eight students from 8M1 participated in the Year 8 Mathematics Day at University of New England, Armidale on Friday the 16th of May. There were 64 teams from 35 schools who had travelled from as far as Moree, Dubbo, Camden Haven and Grafton. The Year 8 Maths Day is organised by New England Maths Association and SiMERR National Research Centre to provide students with an opportunity to interact with a range of problems in Maths in a fun and competitive environment with other students. The day provided a chance for students to solve a range of Maths problems working in teams of four and against other teams, in four challenge rounds. The participating students are shown. Congratulations to Jasmine Brady, Hunter Bake-Smith, Drew Gilchrist, Luke Zerbe, Chloe Rann, Hannah Richardson, Kylan Hogan and Kiarna Ryman. A big thank you to Mrs Bake-Smith who volunteered to drive one of our teams to Armidale on the day and who also helped with the supervision during the competition.

We would like to thank our presenters for the day - Dr Bellette, Aunty Karen Miranda, Annie Harman, Carol Ryan and Michael Wilson (Learning and Engagement Officers), Glen Barnett (Coffs Coast Health Club) and Nortec.
