Recently we had two students, Oriana Watts and Danielle Tate, compete in the Plain English Speaking Competition regional finals. Schools from Tweed Heads to Taree travelled to Toormina High School to compete. The competition is broken into two sections, the prepared speech of 8mins and an impromptu speech of 3 minutes; the students are given 3 minutes to prepare for this impromptu speech on the day. Oriana's speech was about resilience and Danielle spoke about the overuse of the word sorry. Both students were outstanding representatives of our school and should be proud of their efforts on the day.Sally Johnson, Debating Coordinator

Making Picture BooksIn Aleesah’s final workshop students were led through exercises that resulted in the creation of their very own picture book, which included: designing and illustrating the front cover; creating a blurb; and writing and illustrating a simple story.Aleesah was very impressed with the quality of work produced by our students and is hoping to see some of their published stories one day. Adrienne Gillingham, Teacher Librarian
Author VisitAustralian author, Aleesah Darlison, spent a day in our school library inspiring students from Years 7 to 10 with her ‘Dare to Dream’ talk and interactive workshops. The day began with Aleesah sharing the struggles and tribulations she endured from growing up in a disadvantaged background to achieving her dream to become a multi-published, award winning author and business owner. Aleesah discussed with her captivated audience the importance of self-motivation, finding role models, strategies for success and how to develop a personal mantra.Light Up Creativity Writing WorkshopIn this entertaining and exhilarating workshop Aleesah used exercises that got the creative juices flowing to develop the student’s writing skills. By the conclusion of this session students developed dazzling dialogue, created and named hilarious characters and learnt how to write story starters.
What some students thought about
the day...
“Wow! This was fun!”
“I learned so much today”.
“Can we do this again?”
“I really want to be an author”.
“I didn’t know I could write so well”.
