This year, Toormina High School will be taking part in a research study for student wellbeing. This voluntary study is being run by the Black Dog Institute, University of New South Wales. As part of this study, students in Year 9 will be invited to answers some questions about their mental health in class time on a private computer. Students will complete these questionnaires in Weeks 4 and 10 (in Term 1), and Week 3 (in Term 2). Participation is entirely voluntary. All answers remain confidential and will be stored only at the Black Dog Institute. At the end of the study, students will be invited to use an online program developed by the Black Dog Institute called Smooth Sailing. This program is designed to help students cope with worry, stress, and feelings of sadness. Students can use this online program in their own time for up to 12-weeks. If a child reports that they are experiencing severe depression or thoughts of suicide when using Smooth Sailing, they will be immediately referred to the school counsellor. This study will help us to ensure our students are being cared for. For more information about this study, visit: https://blackdoginstitute.org.au/information-for-parents2. If you have any questions or concerns, or you do not wish for your child to participate in this study, please contact your Head Teacher of Wellbeing, Laura McRae. Alternatively, you can directly contact the research group with any questions by emailing [email protected] or calling Dr Bridianne O’Dea on 02 9382 8509.

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) is a problem solving framework that addresses social behaviour and academic outcomes. It provides a systems approach to enhance the capacity of schools to design effective learning environments. Our broad school community has developed our expectations which are "Safe, Respectful, Learners". We have now launched lessons in Roll Call to specifically teach our students what it looks like to be "safe, respectful, learners" in all settings of our school. We are looking forward to introducing our new rewards system for encouraging students to demonstrate expected behaviours across our school environments.

Welcome to Toormina High School for our new families in 2018 and welcome back to our continuing families. Over the holiday break, we have had a few staff changes with the appointment of Mrs Michelle Elliott as Deputy Principal and Mr Greg Woods as Head Teacher Technology and Applied Studies. Michelle is an extremely experienced deputy principal who will supervise the Year 7, 9 and 11 cohorts in 2018. Greg is an experienced head teacher who will complement the great work already being done by the TAS Faculty. Ms Susan Jordan is continuing as Deputy Principal and will supervise the Support Unit, our Distance Education Program and Out of Home Care students. At the end of the year Mr Matthew Gray successfully gained a transferred to Blacktown Boy’s High School in Sydney. I spoke to our students at the commencement of the term about high expectations. Our community needs to focus on achieving our personal best in all we do. The competitive changing nature of the world beyond school continually challenges us to reach our full potential. My expectation of our students is that they will continually strive for excellence in their studies; our staff, that they will provide high quality learning for all of our students; and our parents, through attending meetings, encouraging their child to strive for excellence and providing feedback to our school. When we have such partnerships in place, our students can achieve remarkable results. Our HSC results for 2017 were very pleasing. Three students achieved Band 6 results in Mathematics. Hunter Bake-Smith received a mark of 97%, Drew Gilchrist received a mark of 93% and Luke Zerbe received a mark of 99%. Congratulations to these three students and their teacher, Mr Craig Holden for achieving such amazing results. It is already shaping to be an extremely busy year. Work on the front of the school is nearing completion, with an anticipated completion date of around the 5 March 2018. We have also just completed the installation of 93kw of Solar Panels to allow the further installation of air-conditioners to the remaining classrooms during this year. This will have a significantly positive impact on classroom performance. We currently have a sensory outdoor learning space being installed as part of the Support Unit, providing students with an increased range of learning opportunities. Please remember that the bus bay is no entry area for ALL vehicles other than busses from 8.30am – 9.30am and then from 2.30pm – 4.00pm. Drivers who enter this area do risk a Council or Police fine.If you have any concerns or would like to discuss your child’s progress this year, please make contact with the class teacher, Head Teacher or relevant Deputy Principal or myself.Paul Humphrey, Principal
