A large contingent of the multicultural community of Coffs Harbour turned out at the C.ex Coffs Harbour to celebrate World Harmony Day. Stalls supplied information and displayed the broad range of health services available in this region. The Expo had a strong focus on youth inclusion and wellbeing, as more than 50 exhibitors, together with translators provided culturally appropriate information in a relaxed and friendly setting. The EAL/D students made social connections with the many health services available and enjoyed networking with other members of the EAL/D community.Daniel Laing, EALD Teacher

Greg Driscoll and his Year 11 electronics class have set up a shelter tent in the library. This tent is part of a ShelterBox , also in the library. Our SRC will be conducting fundraising to pay for the ShelterBox and its transportation to a place of need overseas.

In conjunction with the Rotary Club of Coffs Harbour Daybreak, Toormina High School will be working toward a world in which human suffering is addressed and alleviated, all human rights are respected and basic needs are rapidly met - with dignity.

The shelter tent display ties in with Harmony Day which will be celebrated on April 5 at THS.

Principal’s ColumnTerm 2 will resume for students on Tuesday, 26th April this year. On Monday 25th Toormina High School will be well-represented by our school captains, SRC representatives, student volunteers and staff at the Sawtell ANZAC Day march and address. I encourage all students and our parent community to attend and commemorate this important event. Term 1 has been incredibly busy and productive with preparations and rehearsals well underway for our Bongil Bongil Musicale; Year 12 half yearly examinations completed; as well students enjoying bonding days, rewards excursions and a range of wellbeing presentations. This term students have also raised money for the Cancer Council, through Shave For A Cure, and the Rotary Shelter Box program. I congratulate all of our students who value social responsibility and who contribute to our citizenship efforts by supporting such causes. All this, in addition to the amazing work that is being produced in classrooms across the school. Since 2015 Toormina High School has been recognising students for their efforts, achievements and excellent behaviours by sending Positive Postcards home. On the right you’ll see some of the visuals on our Positive Postcards which range from award winning student art works to popular sporting and creative endeavours. Positive Postcards are an opportunity for parents to hear how well their child is doing and to celebrate that with them by putting the postcard on the fridge and sharing it with family and friends. Our staff understand how important it is for you to hear about both the small and large achievements of your children in our school and Positive Postcards are an excellent way we can do this. We also love to hear positive things about our staff and school, so thank you to those parents who have contacted us in return to tell us what a great job we are doing!I wish you all a relaxing holiday break. It was a priviledge to accompany the Open Girls Touch Football Team to the Mid North Coast Gala Day on Thursday, 24 March. The girls won both their games and made it to the grand final only to be beaten in extra time. The team played exceptionally well and represented the school with pride. Titenara Donovan, Shavannah Boota and Jenna Stevenson were selected for the Mid North Coast team and Shaylee Poole was selected as a shadow reserve. The grand final game was a real nail biter; the full-time score was 2-2 so the game progressed into an extra time period known as a "drop-off". During a drop-off, each team reduces their on-field playing strength by one player every two minutes, until teams are down to three players (we were down to three when Jetty scored). The girls played exceptionally well and the referees commented on their sportmanship.Lucy Thomas, Team Coach

TOUCH FOOTBALL GALA DAY

The Toormina High School Open Boys Touch Football Team are champions of the Mid North Coast winning the final in style defeating Dorrigo High School 6-2.It wasn't all smooth sailing as the boys scraped home 5-4 over Bellingen High in a dramatic drop off victory. The Gala day also acted as a North Coast trials event, with 3 of the Toormina boys being selected. Those selected were Tyke Kemp, Seth Martin and Jarod Reeves. Nathan Pollitt was picked as a shadow reserve. A fantastic effort from Toormina once again.Adam Berrada, Team Coach

Proud members of the Lion’s regional clubs and friends gathered together on Saturday night,19th March at the South West Rocks Country Club. The event was to embrace the accomplishments of the young people within our community, in particular the ambassadors representing the individual clubs. The Lion’s Youth of the Year Quest aims to aid in the growth of the young people involved, increase their community spirit and develop life-long skills which will hold them in good stead for their futures. The Bonville/Sawtell Club and Toormina High School were represented by Shaylee Poole who exemplified all the traits of a young community leader. Shaylee presented her prepared speech on the value of Service Dogs with poise and clarity and demonstrated her depth of general knowledge when responding to the impromptu questions. Judge Jim Crisp a retired school teacher, of 40 years’ experience, praised the, finalists stating, “The future of Australians is in pretty good hands.” This was a sentiment echoed by all who attended.I was very impressed by the calibre of finalists, the professionalism of the event but mostly the support and encouragement provided to the schools and the young students by the Leo’s and Lionesses. Their willingness to share life experiences and passion for community make this experience invaluable for any student who wishes to serve their community, build self-confidence and make life-long skills.Toormina High School would like to thank the Bonville/Sawtell Lions club for their ongoing support and encourage the school community to support the club with all of their many endeavours.Senior students who would like to participate in this quest in the future should speak with Ms Winsor.

What parents should know about InstagramIt's hard to keep up with all the social media platforms and apps our kids want to use. Instagram is currently one of the most popular social networks for school-aged children at the moment. It's a free, photo and video sharing mobile application and social network for people aged 13 years and over. There's no age-verification process though, so younger children can create an account pretty easily, sometimes without parents even knowing. Instagram say they'll remove under-age users' accounts if they are reported.Instagram has published ‘A Parent's Guide to Instagram’, and it's a great place to start if you want to know more about how it works and how it can be used safely. The simplest way to stay informed is to ask your child what apps and social media they know about and ask them to show you how they work. It's a good, non-threatening approach because:• kids and teens find out about new apps, games and social networks long before we

do• even less chatty teens tend to enjoy the chance to share their expertise• you'll narrow your focus down to only those social networks and apps your kids use• it opens up the conversation about social media tools and their social life in general• if you ask your child to show you how to "block" other users, "report" abuse, "delete"

their own posts and change their privacy settings, you'll learn how it's done but also know they're able to use those options if they need to.

The good news is we don't have to be social media experts to keep our kids safe, but we do have to be good communicators and talk to them regularly about their social lives – both on and offline.

Applications are now open for the Bond University's Scholarship Program for Australian Year 12 students.Visit www.bond.edu.au/scholarships to find out more about the scholarships available to year 12 students.Students can create a login and return to an application before scholarships close on July 31.

Debating has started off with a bang this year!! Our year 11 team versed Nambucca High School in Round 1 of the Year 11 and 12 Premiere's Debating Competition. The topic was ‘Studying mathematics in senior years of school should be compulsory’ and we were the negative team, arguing against the topic. The debate was very close, with our adjudicator, Mr Ian Muldoon, giving the win to Toormina High School in the end. Congratulations to our team, Mitchell Biggins, Tarquin Jones, Natalie Hawkins and Nadine Hughes.Sally Johnson, Debating Coach
