Funding researchIn 1934, STTI established the first fund for nursing research in the United States, and it is now known as the Research Permanent Fund through the Sigma Theta Tau International Foundation for Nursing. Since its modest initial award of US $600 in 1936, the organization’s research grant program has continued to grow as scholarly activities and the advancement of nursing science have become more sophisticated and integral to the growth of the nursing profession. STTI annually awards a variety of international and co-sponsored research grants that cover a range of global health topics.

PurposeThe purpose of the international grants program is to provide funding for novice researchers, to assist them in beginning their research trajectories and to help more seasoned researchers strike off in new directions. In the process, STTI and the Foundation have contributed significantly to many nurse researchers’ professional careers while also contributing to the advancement of nursing science.

gLobAL InItIAtIVeswww.nursingsociety.org/globalActionSTTI is a global organization with chapters in nearly 30 countries. Founded in 1922, the honor society formally known Sigma Theta Tau added “Interna-tional” to its name in 1985 to clearly indicate the intention for global growth. Recently, the organization proactively moved to expand its global reach, including attaining Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) status with the United Nations (U.N.) and establishing a formal affiliation with the International Council of Nurses.

The STTI board of directors has approved a number of key strategies through which the Global Initiatives Department will expand the organization’s global reach and ensure its growth, global stability, and ultimate success.

These strategies provide a blueprint for how the Global Initiatives Depart-ment will support STTI’s mission — advancing world health and celebrating nursing excellence in scholarship, leadership, and service — and its vision: to be the global organization of choice for nursing. The Global Initiatives strategies will enhance STTI’s reach, impact, and participation within the global health care community.

The Global Initiatives Department coordinates STTI’s formal representation at the U.N., the World Health Organization, the World Health Assembly, and other global organizations with like-minded missions. It also provides guidance to support STTI’s formal presence in global regions outside of North America.

gLobAL InItIAtIVeswww.nursingsociety.org/globalActionInstitute for global Health Care LeadershipThe Institute for Global Health Care Leadership’s mission is to educate and empower executive leaders in health care around the globe to be change agents by using strategic global perspectives that incorporate business culture with an evidenced-based approach to positively influence health outcomes for all.

This institute is designed to introduce future global health care leaders to the wide array of content areas required to effectively lead major public or private health departments, ministries of health, organizations, and global programs and initiatives.

sttI and the u.n.The honor society was approved as an associated non-governmental organization (NGO) by the Department of Public Information of the U.N. in December 2009. This designation recognizes STTI’s commitment to the charter of the U.N., which seeks to achieve international cooperation toward solving humanitarian issues.

In July 2012, the U.N. ECOSOC adopted the Committee on NGOs’ recommendation to grant special consultative status to STTI. This refers to competence in the field of nursing, which extends to global health. This status allows STTI greater privileges, access to nearly all intergovernmental processes at the U.N. dealing with economic and social development, and allows STTI to participate on U.N. committees and to have a “voice” at the U.N.

Through this affiliation, STTI commits to disseminate information and raise public awareness about the purposes and activities of global concern. STTI will provide a strong nursing presence at the U.N. and will continue to conduct outreach to help our nurse members better understand the work and aims of the U.N., including the current Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the upcoming Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The MDGs will come to a close at the end of 2015. They will be replaced by the SDGs, which you will find on the following page.

gLobAL AdVIsory PAneL on tHe Future oF nursIng (gAPFon)www.gapfon.org

what is gAPFon?STTI is partnering with global nurse leaders to establish a voice and vision for the future of nursing that will advance global health. GAPFON seeks to provide evidence on the value of nursing, and to participate in and influence health policy, nursing leadership and practice, education, and the global health agenda.

why gAPFon?According to the World Health Organization (WHO), critical shortages, inadequate skill mix, and an uneven geographical distribution of the health workforce pose major barriers to achieving the U.N.’s health-related MDGs, which include:

• Reducechildmortality• Improvematernalhealth• CombatHIV/AIDS,malaria,andotherdiseases

Currently, only five of the 49 countries categorized as low-income economies by the World Bank meet the minimum threshold of 23 doctors, nurses, and midwives per 10,000 people that was established by WHO as necessary to deliver essential maternal and child health services.

In addition to the advancement of world health, GAPFON provides a commu-nications conduit allowing identification of and conversation about the most important issues facing the profession of nursing today and in the future.

How can I get involved? For information about upcoming regional meetings and other GAPFON activities, please return to the website on a regular basis. Updates, new developments, and instructions for registering as an observer at regional meetings will be posted as the details are finalized. If you have specific questions related to GAPFON, please email [email protected].
