What you are currently holding in your hands, is most likely you first touch to EYP-journalism. You might have already wondered, why some people are watching you, taking notes and sometimes you see nothing after a few seconds of flashing? In addition, this event is most probably one of first touches to EYP itself. Everything is new, and happening at a rate barely detectable until it is over. Suddenly you are back at what you were always doing, maybe with a small spark inside. For the events that you haptly missed, misundertood or simply forgot, are the journalists there. They will keep track of your doings, entertain you and ensure that you have many memories to take with you. So, I would like to invite you to talk to these journalists, tell them about your experiences, let them record a part of your life! It might prove very valuable presently and especially later in life.

Thursday, 24th May: About 40 young, high-motivated and partially quite hot students finally arrive in Pullach, at this wonderful castle called “Burg Schwaneck”. The majority is from Germany and even speaks German every now and then, which is not allowed at any EYP session! If delegates dare to do so, they will also have to be ready to bear the consequences.. The experienced international participants travelled all the way from Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, Bulgaria, Portugal, Ukraine and from some other wonderful countries that do not want to come to my mind right now. While Moni and Kerstin (orgas), living close to Munich, probably had the shortest way, Dimana (chair) had to spend 24 hours on the bus from Sofia to Munich, sitting beside a really old and even more smelly German. At least she had two nice Bulgarians to flirt with during that trip. Some people already know others from previous sessions and were delighted to see each other again. For Philip (from Düren), on the contrary, this is the first EYP session ever. He has never been able to humbly enjoy the pleasure and the privilege of being a delegate before. This underscores the necessity of a nice round of teambuilding (read on for an explanation) for all the organisers, chairs and journalists.

Building the orga-chair-journo-team

While YOU, lovely delegates, were probably still having loads of fun at school, these 40 people neglected school and studies just to sacrifice their time to prepare the 17th National Selection Conference in Germany. The first part of the program is called teambuilding, which you will also be experiencing in the following days. The idea of the games played during teambuilding is to get to know each other better and to start building up trust (some fun might go along with this from time to time). So the group started out with a short presentation

of every person: Name, what we’re doing at the moment (as far as studies) and what we’re responsible for at this session. For me and some others, even remembering all of the names was becoming an almost insurmountable obstacle. Yet, not discouraged at all, we continued with name games (throwing the bacteria to a person that one did remember the name of) and some other EYP classics – games in which the primary objectives are to move your lazy butt, to get involved and to have fun in the group and, last but definitely not least, to look somewhat silly in the eyes of an innocent bypasser. That’s what it’s all about. Some examples: “The Big Fat Pony”, “Giants Wizards and Dwarfs”, “Evolution” and the legendary “Funky Chicken”. Please don’t panic right now and think that you have missed out on something in case you have never heard of any of these games! Trust me, after this session you will also be infected with the EYP-virus, craving these games during day and night. After lunch, the chairs had a very nice task: They were supposed to build a bridge between two of the huge logs, which are located at the sides of the path leading to the impressive castle. It turned out to be quite challenging, as the bridge had to consist of all the chairs and could only touch the ground with four feet, four hands and one rear end. Considering that there were more than 15 chairs involved, one can imagine that the result must have looked… interesting. Luckily, me and the other journos were watching them. Have a look at the pictures and convince yourself. We hope to see some more creative ideas of solving problems, such as this one, from you when it’s your turn to do teambuilding!

As you all now, Munich is the capital of Bavaria, a region in the southeast of Germany that – yes – actually is a federal state of Germany. ;-)For every non-Bavarian German speaker understanding the dialect spoken in this region can sometimes be quite hard, so we’ve decided to include an English – German – Bavarian dictionary into our newspaper. Here is the first lesson of learning the Bavarian language!

Dear Dr. EYP

I was really glad when I heard that there is someone like you taking care for us delegates, since I am really worried about this session. The thing is that I’ve never been away from my family for more than 2 days and I’m afraid that I’ll get homesick during the days here in Munich. Is it true that I will not share a room with people from my delegation? Please help me.

Yours very unsure and fearful,Anna, 17 years.

Dear Anna,

Don’t worry, darling. If you really feel alone, then Dr. EYP will be there for you with free hugs and more. It’s true that you will must share your room with other, unknown people. But don’t worry, our special agent has checked them all and none of them has a criminal record. And if one of them turns nasty anyway, we know where their family lives.

Yours,Dr. EYP

One of the main tasks of a journo is to take the really funny and unexpected pictures. A major factor in taking those sneaky pictures is how inconspicuous you can be. The better you fit into the background, the more unexpected pictures you can take. BUT it has its downsides too. If you fit too well into the background, you might experience the highly enjoyable feeling of a delegate running into you. This is a really unique feeling. One that you just have to experience at least once in your life. First you feel something soft touching your skin. A warm and unreal feeling that is hard to identify. Then slowly the pressure builds up and you start having some trouble with staying on your feet. After that the feeling gets a bit unpleasant. It changes from something soft into harder material. And in some cases you can even hear something break.Another interesting thing about journo-delegate collisions is the diversity. Sometimes the harder, more unpleasant feeling takes longer to take place, sometimes not. One might say that no two collisions are the same. Major factors in the hard-soft feeling proportion are the weight of the delegate and of course the speed at the moment of the collision.Just remember, if you suddenly feel something strange or find yourself lying on the floor without any obvious reason, it might have been a journo.

Culture Shock of the day: Sparkling water!

By ChocolateThere are things in life that we take for granted, that we consider to be “normal”. But those things are sometimes really exotic (or just plain weird) from the point of view of a foreigner. First in our series ‘culture shock of the day’: Sparkling Water.

To the surprise of some international officials, it is sometimes rather difficult, if not impossible, to get non-sparkling water here.

One might ask, who has ever come up with the idea of putting bubbles in water? There seems to be no point in it. It takes more effort and to some people, the taste is not any better. Secondly, it is just irresponsible to produce water with gas, in these times of global warming. You should all feel ashamed for ruining our climate! Okey, “ruining” might not be the right word. I like this new weather, too! Maybe sparkling water has its advantages after all.

Some of you might not even know it, but the EYP has, just like the real European Parliament, two official langues. The one which is not used very often, you might expecter it, is French. Oui, oui, there are not many personnes who can speak the langue de l’amour. For this raison, we have décidé to includer a short texte en Francais in every session paper since we think il faut que l’on respecte the French speaking Europeans.

Every National and International EYP Session is led by a President. He is one of the people responsible for selecting the chairs, their teambuilding and training. But probably the most important thing is that he is the head of the General Assembly and decides which delegation is recognized.Being a president has obviously a lot of advantages: Everyone is friendly to you, you are highly respected and many delegates see you as a role model. This can be really exhausting, too, because a president has always to be correct. However, being the highest EYP official for a few days is a dream of many young delegates. So how do you become a president? Some of you might think that it is enough to be as good looking, smart and charming as Christopher Holzhaider to be chosen for this job. Unfortunately, it is not that easy. Normally, you have to be a delegate first, and later a chair at an International Session. This way you get to know many people and they get to know you, too. If you can convince them of your abilities, the head organiser of a session may

propose you as president. If the board of EYP Germany confirms this proposal, you are will be a president. But although this means a lot of fun, there is one sad thing about it. You can only be chosen once as president for a session and you won’t even be selected as chair again. So, after you reached the highest step and were a president at an International Session your EYP career is over.

Once again all delegates had to prove their creativity by creating a short scene for the “EYP theatre” presentation yesterday evening. It was really interesting to see how funny ways you were able to put the words “Weißwurscht”, “Lederhosen”, “Guess who rules the world”, “pipeline” and the Bavarian word for a squirrel’s tail, “Oachkoatzalschwoaf” into a context.

The ideas of worshipping the “Weißwurscht” or having it as the only medicine Kaiser Franz Beckenbauer could use in order to cure our dear and beloved Edmund Stoiber were hilarious, the same applies to Jupiter and the Moon creating the proper atmosphere for the Science Fiction episode and for the very complex family problem you confronted us with during the Talkshow. However, since I can’t possibly mention all your clever ideas I’ll just let the pictures speak for themselves…

The teambuilding of Klairi’s and Chris’ committee really had a huge impact on the guys. During the briefing they started talking about their thoughts of each other when they were still at home, reading each other’s resolutions. Apparently they had already planned to attack the other delegations in every single point of their resolution but after the teambuilding they had changed their plans: These guys had fallen in love with each other so much that they did not want to criticise on each other’s work any more! However, I’m sure that they’ll soon recognize that criticism must not be done on a personal level and expect them to discuss their different ideas lively in GA. Once again, this shows how

close a group can grow together after only about two hours of teambuilding!

The guys were being rewarded already this morning while playing the “Bucket Game” against all other committees. Cheering really hard for each other they were by far the best committee at this game and won it. Celebrating their success, their team spirit was shown once more when they attacked their chair Klairi and poured the rest of the water which was left in the bucket over her.

“Why are we five girls and five boys,” wondered Felix, “where is Anna???” - “Oh that’s me,” replied the deep voice of Philip, the player.Teambuilding started with the first name game using some keys due to the missing tennis balls. The delegates but also the chairs learned the names quite well even they’ve been very shy and not too enthusiastic about it. Unfortunately the game was interrupted by the transportation with the tram to the “English Garden”.After arriving there, the lovely delegates of 1 A went on playing through all different kinds of name games. In order to get to know each other better on a personal level we played “two facts - one lie” in small groups. While Caroline loves tigers, Christian isn´t too fond of Chinese food due to the bugs in the meal. Alex is the one who´s into chemical

experiments. Connected to their little finger it was pretty easy to find out that Indra and Philip are both playing handball. (Go and find out what they´re little fingers look like.) But this is not the only sportive game being practiced in our lovely committee. While Christina is totally into water sports like sailing and surfing, Isa(bella) is more into tennis - and not only this - she is in fact listening metal music which completely shocked the rest of the committee. But it is not all about sports. Fabian’s life is full of music as he plays three instruments and loves Indie music. Johanna is a really tough career woman. She is planning to enter the army and becoming President of Germany afterwards. After some more games including the funny “Orange game” (go and ask the delegates about their experiences…) the timidity fortunately

decreased to a minimum level.During the city rallye, mainly guided by Christian, the committee even got confident enough to ask some scary looking secret service guys about the way to next location. The secret service was quite interested in the funky chicken game. The “Honey tell me that you love me” game separated the lovers (Philip, Indra, Isa) from the guy being as cold as ice, also known as Alex. Shortly after arriving at the Marienplatz, all the participants started to play some more games that even caught the attraction of many pedestrians. On the way back to Pullach the committee prepared the theatre about beer pipelines and showed how well they can already work together. So, everything what´s left to say after a day full of surprises, action and sunburn is, that we can´t wait to spend more time with you!Love, your chairs ;-)

No committee is as creative as the Lemon Committee. This was clearly demonstrated during the atomic bomb game, during which they managed to come up with the craziest solutions. Another way to express their creativity were the many different slogans. Going from the highly original ‘Bitter like a lemon’ till the revolutionary ‘Juicy like Lemon’. Seldom have I seen such originality. The lemon committee is like a well without a bottom, they just keep on surprising you. Like how they turned from philosophical (to be a lemon or not to be a lemon, that’s the question!) into hyperactive in 0.3 seconds. As soon as they heard the assignments for the city rally they just rushed towards some sunbathing people, forced them to explain them the shortest way to the monuments and off they were. Determined to find all the monuments

in time they walked so fast that chairs and journo were far behind in no time. I have to say, it was a challenge to catch up with them. The fanatics were running like rabbits behind a, really fast, carrot!Sadly, their effort was mostly for nothing. In the end they only found one of the monuments. To comfort them they managed to get free hugs from a lot of random people in the streets. Not only philosophical and hyperactive, but also really charming!

After the Regiovillage last night, everyone knows what a full belly means! Thanks to you delegates, who brought all the delicious food with you, it’s always nice to go around the tables and grab some pieces of bread, chocolate, and sausage, to sip a bit of beer and wine and to taste some delicate finger food of which a particular region of Germany is famous for. I was very surprised at first when I saw the delegation from Essen serve appetisers from Turkey and Afghanistan. However, very soon they explained their reasons for bringing n on-German food: The high proportion of immigrants who live in Essen. This is what I call open-minded young Europeans!Another thing that must be mentioned is the Aschaffeburger’s cake that was shaped like their famous castle. It looked so good that I did not want to eat anything of it since its shape would have been spoiled then (later I saw that someone had committed the crime - the EYP secret service is still trying to find out who it was…). They even prepared a quiz about the castle - unfortunately, I had never before heard anything about it so I was not able to give a single answer...The Munich delegation brought everything you’d need to celebrate the Octoberfest: Brezels, Leberkäse and (of course) beer! However, also the Frankfurt apple wine tasted really delicious

and the Cloppenburg “Mockturtle” soup must not be forgotten, either: originally, it really contained turtle meat, however, now it’s only made of the meat of sweet little cows.

Here a list with some more highlights: H a m b u r g “Franzbrötchen”Fishless “Kieler Sprotten” made out of chocolate from the Schleswig Holstein delegationNürnberger (guess where they were from – yes of course, Nürnberg ;-))And of course, the delicious Bavarian “Weißwürschtl” from the Pullach locals – thanks for coming!

All in all, the food was rich, the mouths full and everything over much too soon!

“To be or not to be, ‘cause we are the best”. This is the motto of committee 2b, who are at least the best at sports. During the City Tour, this committee was so ambitious that they started to run all the time. At first, they were supposed to find a lion statue and touch its nose. Two policemen showed them the way, but unfortunately to the wrong statue. It was positioned on a balcony and thus impossible to reach. But after a short run the right lion was found and the group was given the words for their presentation in the evening. The next task was to go to the oldest church in Munich, called “Alter Peter” and to perform the “frog song” in front of it. Two Tourists who were being asked “Wo ist der Alte Peter?” were irritated because they hadn’t heard of it before. But finally the church was found. The last special task was to sing the song “In München steht ein Hofbräuhaus” together with people from three different nations. Fortunately, their chair Maria comes from Romania, so there was only one other willing foreign person left. Although Tim tried to give two Asians a crash course in German, he couldn’t convince them to take part. However, since there was no time left any more, the committee had to hurry and started to run to the Marienplatz.

Page 25: Move - Issue 1

This committee is very special because it is our single observer committee. Most of you prob-ably haven’t heard about this before. Their task is to write the emergency resolution for the General Assembly. Unfortunately, they are not allowed to vote on the other resolutions and will only join in the two first and two last debates. Another interesting aspect is that only two pupils from every school were chosen and not a whole delegation. However, this commit-tee, led by Dimana and Jan, is very creative. During the game “two truths and one lie” they came up with a lot of funny and interesting facts. The most obvious lie was that Frederike likes Tokio Hotel. Nobody couldn’t imagine that. But sometimes the facts were really hard to guess. Jin-On did’t believe Kirsten that she studies Chinese, but she really does. Dimana was a little disappointed in the beginning, because everyone believed her to be 23, al-though she is only 19 years old. On the way back to the castle Schwaneck, something really interesting happened: Riaan gave a flower to Kirsten and held a romantic speech for her. The climax of this little love story was that Kirsten took off her socks and shoes and got a foot massage by Riaan. To be continued...

After the coffee break, in which the Delis were able to enjoy pastries and could regain their energy by drinking serious amounts of Red Bull, the next task was waiting for the committees: The Rally through Munich. Max (Clemens August Gymnasium) had the courage to open the mysterious envelope the lovely chairs Christoph and Maret had already prepared. He presented the pictures, which it contained and read out the instructions on the back. They had to find four places, where they were supposed to either play a teambuilding game, to bring their chairs at least 10 flowers or to do other fun stuff. As a team, the committee decided how to proceed. They chose the easiest way: They designated Constanze (Maximiliamsgymnasium) their official guide, since she knows her way around Munich. But even the ‘native’ did not recognise all of the places, so it was necessary to ask some pedestrians. The delegates started walking from

the English Garden to the Hofgarten and then to the Odeonsplatz, chatting, laughing and above all getting to know each other on the way. I found out that Wera (Gymnasium Oberalster) spent 2 years in Singapore, attending an American School. She moved there with her family, for her dad had to work there. Every once in a while the group stopped, and guide Constanze provided them with some interesting facts. At the Viktualienmarkt, the delis were very successful in finding loads of beautiful flowers, as can be seen in the picture. Passing the synagogue and the Frauenkirche, committee 3A made its way back to the Marienplatz, where they met with everybody else and played the most popular EYP games in public. Especially the “Big Fat Pony” attracted attention, so that even a non-EYPer joined in and had at least as much fun as everybody else, it seemed.

Having passed the “Surfen und Baden verboten!” sign with the “We <3 surfing”-sticker on it and also having admired the fabulous surfers and relaxing swimmers, the committees arrived at the spot in the English Garden where the teambuilding would take place. Unexpectedly, T r i p p i n g Tiago (chair) suggested to break the ice by going swimming in the stream. Since it was really hot and mostly everybody was burning up, Lovely Lothar (Ratsgymnasium) immediately jumped in without even thinking about taking any of his clothes off or considering the illegality of this action. The committee definitely proved wrong the prejudice of the always-correct/stuck up, law-abiding Germans, as pretty much everybody joined Lothar. Jumping Julia (Fürstenberggymnasium) proved that she deserves that name, showing us a nice cannon-ball-jump. Standing Simon (Gymnasium Philippinum), Jolly Julia (Clemens-August-Gymnasium) and Lucky Lisa (Mädchengymnasium Borbeck) were also courageous and jumped in, battling their chair Tiago in a water fight. Only Moving Max (Remstalgymnasium) and Sunny Semhar (Friedrich-List-Europaschule) were strong enough to resist the temptation of getting wet, preferring a nice sunbath. In the name game that followed, the delegates were extraordinarily creative, coming up with all these fantastic nicknames and thus compensating the journo’s lack of creativity. Loud Laura (Dalberg Gymnasium), for example, gave an impressive shouting performance as she presented her name. After these two very effective activities to get to

know each other, it was time to build up mutual trust by playing the “Drunken Bottle”. One of the delis stood in the middle, eyes shut, all the others formed a tight circle

around him or her, absorbing the fall of the stiff ‘human bottle’ and then pushing it back. The boys, especially Friendly Florian

(Maximiliansgymnasium) and Useful Ulrich (Gymnasium Oberalster) needed some time before they blindly trusted the group, so the circle was tightened at the beginning to make them feel more comfortable. Luckily, Tipsy Tiago never stopped talking during the whole game, so that there was at least no embarrassing silence. Altogether, it seemed that the delegates really enjoyed themselves and started to become a team, although some of them still need to get used to the games. But I’m positive that they will soon be all infected by the EYP-spirit!
