Middle School News We had a great week in the MS Girls, filled with learning and accomplishments! The Fifth Grade Girls were so excited to begin their Shabbos unit this week! The girls are looking forward to learning all about the special gift of Shabbos and how they can make the most of it! They also enjoyed learning about the importance of learning Torah as they began meeting the very first shofet, Osniel ben Knaz! A Triple Mazal Tov to the Sixth Grade Girls for finishing Perek Yud Gimmel in Chumash, their Parsha points, and in Dinim, Mitzvah 25, believing that there is a HaShem in the world! In addition to all these accomplishments, the sixth grade girls are also working on mastering and memorizing Shiras Devorah! Mazal Tov to the Seventh Grade Girls for finishing Perek Beis in Navi! The girls did a beautiful job on their Navi tests and are looking forward to continuing Perek Gimmel! The seventh grade girls also had a chance to continue the special lesson they began last week on understanding the value of each person. The Eighth Grade Girls really enjoyed learning about the special opportunity that Shlomo HaMelech had, to ask HaShem for any request that he'd like. They also had a insightful conversation, after learning about Shlomo HaMelech's marraige to the daughter to Paroh, about the importance of having a Rebbi as well as proper role models from whom to learn and grow from. Yasher koach to the Eighth grade girls for all the preparation and planning they are putting into each practice for the upcoming production with the elementary grade girls! In addition to all the learning that has happened this week, our 5-8th grade girls also had a special opportunity to join in the preparations for the Challah Bake that took place on Thursday night in honor of this week's Shabbos Project! We are so grateful to Rabbi Preis, Mrs. Minster and Mrs. Edelstein for allowing us to participate in this one of a kind mitzvah! Message from General Studies Director

In a recent Educational Leadership Team (ELT) meeting, Rabbi Pam mentioned that success is often preceded by the creation of a solid structure and strong systems. In my experience, the Rabbi is 100% correct! As the ELT works hard to ensure that the School’s structures and systems are solid, I am charged with focusing on the structure and systems in our general studies program. As a parent, I have seen first-hand how developing a solid structure and system at home has helped put my daughters in the best possible position to succeed. My last two critical areas that have proven to be “game changers” in my family are:

1. Homework Plan – Creating and maintaining a good plan for homework completion is essential. I recommend that you work with your sons and daughters to establish a consistent time and place (in the home) for them to complete their homework. Please be sensitive to extraneous noises and other distractions that can often sidetrack the student and thus lengthen the time required to complete his/her work.

2. Backpack Plan – “Loading” the backpack with all completed homework assignments and other academic documents should not be left to the hustle and bustle of the morning. I recommend that our students load their backpacks the evening before. This will be one less thing to worry about in the morning, and it will decrease the number of forgotten items.

Middle School Boys

The GMS BMS is humming with learning, camaraderie, and positive momentum! This week we will highlight the eighth grade: The eighth grade boys have earnestly begun the transformation process of developing from elementary school boys to boys getting ready to attend Yeshiva. They have begun Sunday learning and night seder twice a week, which is in addition to their full slate of kriah, gemara, chumash, halacha, navi, beur tefllah and emunah. This past Friday the highly popular weekly vaad was resumed, and the speaker this week was Rabbi Pam. Another highlight this week was a trip to the Kollel for a special lesson from Rabbi Minster on how to learn out the halacha from the gemara. In language arts class, the eighth grade boys are finishing the class novel Among the Hidden. They are also working on an independent reading project that will highlight a book of their choice! This week they will begin a unit on argumentative writing. In social studies class, the boys have just been introduced to the topic of the thirteen colonies, including who founded them, the year they were founded, and the purpose of them. The class has derived many life lessons from the in-depth analyzation of how these early settlers lived, governed and earned a living. The eighth grade boys just completed a science unit on matter, elements, compounds, and an introduction to the connections between matter and energy. The next topic will be an overview of the periodic table, looking at phases of matter, properties of elements and compounds, and just how the periodic table is constructed and used. In math, the boys are currently working on problems using the Pythagorean Theorem, and are improving their graphing skills. The boys completed short labs on measurement to help them find practical approaches of how math relates to our daily lives. Pirchei this Shabbos is for Grades 3&4 from 3:30-4:30 pm at R'Scherer's house.

Pirchei next Shabbos Parshas Vayera will be for Grades 1&2 from 3:30-4:30pm.at R'Scherer's house. Parents of those aged boys will be receiving an email next week to describe the Shabbos Pirchei group. Mazel Tov to the 52 Boys who learned over the Sucos break and will be enjoying their well-earned reward with a trip to Co Co Key Water Park. Thank you to the many families who contributed to make this program a huge success!
