When I check my calendar, I am surprised to find that this year has nearly drawn to a close.

Teachers are currently finalising assessments through Common Assessment Tasks and Year 9’s and 10’s will undergo some exams in Week 8. Year 10’s also have their VCE exam next week, if they are studying a Unit 2 subject.

Also during Week 8, students from all year levels will participate in a celebration event to mark the end of the 2017 academic year at Kurnai Morwell Campus. You will have already received information about these events.

Morwell Campus will have a student-free report writing day on Friday 1st December.

Headstart

Our annual Headstart Program commences on Monday 4th December, and runs throughout Weeks 9 and 10.

For families new to Kurnai College, all students progress to the next year level during Headstart, and actually

commence the 2018 work.

This just in …

Many of you will know we have a few chooks in the Hands-on Learning area. One of the girls has been ‘clucky’

meaning that she wouldn’t get off the nest for others to lay. Quick to think Michael Stubbe, leader of the HoL

program, sourced some fertile eggs for “Old Blackie” to sit on, and we are excited to announce that yesterday,

four very cute little chicks were hatched!

End of Year

During the final week of the year, students will be involved in a range of activities events, and then the year will finish with our College-wide Awards.

Please remember that attendance for the remainder of the year is every bit as important as any other time of the year. Students who do not attend Headstart will be at a disadvantage next year.

Headstart

At Kurnai College, our students move into the next year level for “Headstart”, beginning in about two weeks. They will begin Year 8 classes, with new teachers and some changes to class groups. This is learning in earnest and is a very important time to continue the excellent attendance that has been shown by most students throughout the year. The work that the students do during the Headstart period contributes to their first reporting cycle next year. Students who miss learning during this time find themselves behind and struggling to start their Year 8. This is also a good opportunity to update your child’s stationery with new workbooks and items for their pencil cases. The forthcoming holidays are also a good time to look at resolving any issues with your child’s device with an IT repairer.

As the students race home to the end of Year 7, it’s great to see them continuing to work hard and achieving fantastic results. The latest round of Performance Reports resulted in over half the year level receiving certificates to recognise their hard work. That’s a fantastic effort that the students should be proud of. We really enjoyed rewarding those students, and others who had shown personal growth with a lunch last week.

Celebration Day

Celebration Day is fast approaching and is the last official day of Year 7 before the students move to Year 8. The

students will enjoy fun activities together and with the team of staff responsible for their learning throughout the

year. There is a small cost associated with the day. Please ensure that the permission forms are returned on

time. Also, permission forms for the Awards Day are currently outstanding.

Year 7 PBS Student Leaders

During the last few weeks of this year, after our Celebration Day, we have the opportunity to get a ‘headstart' into

Year 8. On Celebration Day, we get to leave campus and go bowling then play laser tag with the addition of a

picnic.

Year 8 is going to be a lot of fun and a great experience to have. Next year we have the privilege of having Art

class with Ms. Boland as an elective.

The Year 6’s will be having their Orientation from 12th to 14th December.

Victorian Young Leaders to China Program 2018

Ten students from Morwell Campus have been selected to apply for the

Victorian Young Leaders to China program in 2018. The program involves

students travelling, living and attending school in China for six weeks, and is a

fantastic opportunity for our young people to immerse themselves in

Chinese language and culture. Selected students have submitted a written

application and then must conduct an interview to select those that will go

abroad next year. What an experience!

Sustainability Day

Kurnai College’s first Sustainability Day will be held on Friday 17th November

and will run from 1 – 3pm. The day will involve a whole range of workshops and

activities that will raise awareness of issues to do with sustainability in the

Latrobe Valley and the wider world. There will be food, music and heaps of

interactive activities for all our Morwell students. The Kurnai Green Team has

been busily planning the event and are now praying for sunshine on the day.

Laptops Required

A quick reminder that students are strongly encouraged to bring their own

laptop or device to school each day. If students do not have their own device,

they need to see Mr. Bennett to arrange a temporary borrowing card.

Students will not be able to borrow a device from the library without a card.

Headstart

Headstart is fast approaching and current Year 8’s are required to put in their preferences for 2018 electives

and project time classes. Preference forms are being distributed this week and need to be completed and

returned to the Year 8 office.

A reminder to call our ABSENCE HOTLINE 5132 3711 preferably before 9am if your child is not going to be at school.

This will ensure your child’s absence is recorded correctly and you don’t receive a phone call from our office.

Project Presentations

Once again, our Year 9 students will be showcasing their Project work. I would

love to see all of you come along to see what your child has produced in their

Human Powered Vehicle, Cottage Crafts, Digital Technologies or Art class.

Students’ work will be displayed on Monday 20th November between 2pm and

3.30pm in the courtyard near the HEX (weather permitting).

Examinations

Please see the attached draft exam timetable.

Orientation Day

On Wednesday 1st November, the Year 9’s went out to the University Campus to have a look at the different VCE classes that are available for us next year. On the day, we had a tour of the campus and lunch was provided. There were a range of different VCE subjects to suit different interests and we were allowed to pick three VCE subjects in order of preference. The majority of Year 9 students thought it was a great experience and were glad they had the opportunity to experience a taste of what it will be like at the senior campus.

Celebration Day

Students have now received the permission forms for Jump and Climb on Thursday 30th November. The day

will be an opportunity for staff and students to relax and celebrate the 2017 school year. I look forward to

celebrating a great year, with all of our Year 9’s.

As always, if you have any concerns or questions, please do not hesitate to contact me on 5165 0600.

University Campus and Year 11 Subjects in 2018

Following the visit to our senior campus, all Year 9 students have now chosen

their Year 11 subject to study in 2018 which will begin during Headstart. In

order for students to travel on the bus, they will need to return the bus form

that was distributed some weeks ago. If your child has not returned this form,

please ensure that they do so this week.

Study Tips

Students in Year 9 will have examinations in English and Maths. One way of reducing exam anxiety is to make

sure you are well prepared. Be sure to talk to your teachers about the skills and knowledge you will be

required to demonstrate on the end of semester exam and ask their advice on the best way to study for the

exam.

What is Study?

Studying means 'using your time to learn'. When you study you review, understand and memorise important

information teachers have taught you over the course of the semester.

Year 10 Formal

Tickets for the formal are now available at the office. Students must return

their overdue books to the library before they will be issued with their ticket.

Ms Qu and her committee have been busy organising decorations and awards

for the night. I encourage every student to attend this fun evening where they

can celebrate their final day as a student at the junior campus.

Please see me if you are having any difficulty with any aspect of the formal.

Common Assessment Tasks

Each subject is finalising their summative assessment for the term. Students who are absent for the CATs will be

required to complete them during Bootcamp classes.

Orientation Day for Vocational Educational Training (VET)

By the time this newsletter is published, all Year 10 students who have chosen

a VET class for 2018 would have attended their Orientation Day on 15th

November. Students will now have a better understanding of the courses

contents and requirements and they will know how to get to the venue. If you

have any questions or if for some reason your child was unable to attend,

please contact me on 51650 600

Insurance and Ambulance Cover

Parents are reminded that the Department does not provide personal accident

insurance for students. Parents and guardians are responsible for paying the cost

of medical treatment for injured students, including any transport costs. In some

circumstances, medical or other expenses will be paid by the Department where it

is assessed that it is likely, that the Department is liable for negligent (careless) acts

or omissions of its staff or volunteers..

Student accident insurance policies are available from some commercial insurers.

These cover a range of medical expenses not covered by Medicare or private

health insurance.

Personal property is often brought to school by students, staff and visitors. This

can include mobile phones, calculators, toys, sporting equipment and cars parked

on school premises. The Department does not hold insurance for personal prop-

erty brought to schools and has no capacity to pay for any loss or damage to such

property.

Year 7 and 8 Health

This term students will be partaking in Sexual Education lessons, focusing on

Contraception, Puberty, Sexually Transmitted Infections and changes they may

encounter during adolescence. These lessons will be conducted during Health

lessons. It is encouraged that families take this opportunity to continue any

discussions at home, particularly if students are raising any questions they might

feel uncomfortable asking during class time.

BUS CAPTAINS – Student Leadership rolls

At the moment the College is looking for Bus Captains that travel

on Town and Country Bus routes.

Bus captains assist drivers with supervision. They have full authority under the

direction of the Bus Coordinator and will be instructed in the importance of their

position and expectations of them in the event of a breakdown or other

emergency.

Interested students should email [email protected] or contact

5165 0610.

2018 Bus Travel – Morwell to University Campus

The College is in the process of having students and parents/guardians, who are

currently living in Morwell and will be attending the University Campus in 2018,

complete Form 1 Application for Permission to Travel and Conveyance Forms.

The Conveyance Forms allows eligible families to claim free travel to and from

school. The College can only claim these funds if families complete and return

these forms. The College will then submit the Claim on parent/guardians behalf to

DET in 2018 and these funds, once paid, are forwarded to LV Bus Lines as

payment for student travel to and from school.

Who can travel on a school bus?

The general rule is that students living 4.8 km or more from, and attending their

nearest appropriate school/campus, are eligible to travel on a school bus service

at no cost.

How do I apply for my child to catch the school bus?

The bus coordinator at your child’s school will provide you with the appropriate

school bus application form for you to fill out and sign. Attached to the application

form are the conditions under which your child will be transported. Parents/

guardians and students must sign, agreeing to those conditions of travel. The bus

coordinator will process your application.

Can my child continue to travel on the school bus if we move house during the

year?

A change of address automatically triggers a reassessment of your child’s eligibility

and requires parents/guardians to submit a new permission to travel application

form. The change of address may mean your child is still eligible but is required to

change bus services or needs to be picked up and dropped off at a different stop.

Conversely, the move may see your child residing within 4.8 km of the school or no

longer attending their closest school. The bus coordinator at your child’s school

will be able to assist you.

I have been told that my child can only catch a school bus to their nearest school.

Why can’t I send my child to another school?

Parents/guardians are free to send their child to any school at which they can be

accommodated. However, under the School Bus Program’s policy, only students

living 4.8 km or more and attending their nearest government or appropriate non-

government school are eligible to travel at no cost. Students attending their next

nearest school may be eligible to travel on a school bus service subject to seating

capacity and upon payment of a fare.

If you have any questions in relation to bus travel please contact Leonie Mackie by

phoning 5165 0610 or email [email protected]
