UNIVERSITY CAMPUS - PATHWAYS TO SUCCESS

Past Student Lecture

We were lucky to have 2015 DUX, Daniel Blakeley, come back to school to offer tips and tricks to our current Year 12’s. Daniel gave his Top 5 areas to focus on before moving around the library to tutor and talk with students. We love our past students returning to offer advice and support and we were thankful for Daniel giving us his time and returning a week later to offer more tutoring. If you would like to see Daniel’s top tips you can see them at https://findthebestyou.wordpress.com/2017/02/21/past-student-daniel-blakely/

Well Done Hayden

Hayden has been successful in being accepted as a member on the Latrobe City Youth Council. He will be able to hold his position for two years.

Hayden was also successful in being chosen to attend the WEX – Work Experience with Gov-ernment program in Canberra. Hayden will be leaving next week for five days. Whilst in Can-berra he will be going to Parliament house where he will meet and have the opportunity to liaise and ask questions to various ministers. During this time Hayden will also visit the Australi-an Defence Force and Australian Federal Police as well as be involved in other cultural activi-ties.

UNIVERSITY CAMPUS - PATHWAYS TO SUCCESS

Kurnai College Introduces a Statement of Values The Department of Education and Training are committed to promoting healthy, safe and respectful school communities. All

schools are encouraged to adopt a statement of values for their learning community and it was with that in mind that our

College Council ratified a statement of values for Kurnai College at their last meeting.

In doing so Kurnai College recognises the importance of the partnership between schools and parents to support student

learning, engagement and wellbeing. We share a commitment to, and a responsibility for, ensuring inclusive, safe and orderly

environments for children and young people.

The Statement of Values sets out our behavioural expectations of all members in this school community, including the

principal, all school staff, parents, students and visitors. It respects the diversity of individuals in our school community and

addresses the shared responsibilities of all members in building safe and respectful school communities.

Discrimination, sexual and other forms of harassment, bullying, violence, aggression and threatening behaviour are

unacceptable and will not be tolerated in this school.

Our Statement of Values acknowledges that parents and school staff are strongly motivated to do their best for every child.

Everyone has the right to differing opinions and views and to raise concerns, as long as we do this respectfully as a community

working together.

A full copy of the Kurnai College Statement of Values is included in this newsletter and can be found on Compass or in hard copy at the general office of each Campus of the College.

Art on our Door Step

We are lucky to have such a respected gallery at our door step of our art department. The Switchback Gallery continues to

have artworks on display from a range of local and international artists. Our VCE groups get in and look at each new exhibition

and reflect on what makes a ‘high quality’ artwork.

Last week our Year 11’s and 10’s (pictured) saw the amazing works of Leon De Montignie. His realistically painted street scenes

are so full of stories and so beautifully painted that most of the kids walked around and analysed them for the full hour. It is

free to enter so I recommend other students and families take the time to head up to the Switchback gallery and have a look.

Thinking of Agriculture or Veterinary Science? The University of Melbourne offers the only Veterinary Science degree in Victoria, and is one of two Universities offering an agriculture degree (in addition to La Trobe University). If you are thinking of studying either of these degrees at the University of Melbourne you might like to attend the Werribee Open Day and explore your future. Learn more about these degrees, meet some furry and reptilian friends, and feast at the food stalls on the day. Registrations for course lecture times and veterinary hospital tours are essential – RSVP today at RSVP today. Note: due to limited spaces, the veterinary hospital tours are prioritised to current science University students. When: 10am-3pm, Sunday 29 April; Where: Werribee Campus, 250 Princes Hwy, Werribee; Info: [email protected]. Agriculture offers many job opportunities, in fact, staff at the University of Melbourne point out that there are three jobs in agriculture for every graduate, and many of these happen to be in the city.

New Bachelor of Engineering Practice (Honours) at Swinburne – In a world that is rapidly changing, innovation, agility and creativity are more important than ever. That’s why Swinburne has created this revolutionary new degree. Responding to the needs of industry, this degree is designed to equip engineers of the future with the skills required to meet tomorrow’s challenges. The course is co-created and co-delivered by industry partners, it is designed to mirror a professional workplace, it is project-based and team-oriented. It has a studio environment rather than a traditional classroom, and students are assessed by project outcomes and performance reviews. Traditional majors will not be offered, rather, student will have the opportunity to refine their interests towards industry sectors through the selection of different projects. Team projects will focus on four industry sectors: smart cities, Industry 4.0, Internet of Things and People, and products designed for people. Interested? See: www.swinburne.edu.au/engineering-practice-honours or book an appointment with a student advisor – www.swinburne.edu.au/appointment.

Early Achievers Program at Australian Catholic University (ACU) – Like all other Australian public Universities, ACU is a University open to all of any faith or no faith at all. NOTE: Australia also has a small number of private Universities – eg. Bond University and the University of Notre Dame. ACU has Campuses throughout Australia, including in Melbourne (Fitzroy) and in Ballarat. ACU offers a program known as the Early Achievers Program (EAP). This program allows applicants for ACU to indicate how they have contributed to the community during their lives, and successful applications can lead to an early offer of a place at the University. Applications open online for EAP on Wednesday 26 April and close on Monday 17 July. Offers of places will be made by ACU at the end of August, rather than having to wait

until January to obtain an offer through the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre. See: www.acu.edu.au/eap to find out more about how to prepare your application, how to submit it, and how to monitor it NOTE: La Trobe University has a similar program called Aspire. See: www.latrobe.edu.au/aspire for more information.

Hygiene for Teens Puberty causes all kinds of changes in your body. Your skin and scalp may suddenly get oily very easily. Every day it seems you have new hair growing in different places. At times, you seem to sweat for no reason - and you may notice there are odours where you never had them before. What should you do about it? Why it’s important to wash! Staying healthy – reducing rashes and infections

Being clean builds confidence and helps with fitting in

Feeling good about yourself

Body Odour Teenagers develop more sweat glands as they go through puberty and will sweat more.

Bacteria feed off sweat and create body odour.

Regular (everyday) washing and changing clothes (especially underwear) reduces the bacteria and reduces the odour.

Antiperspirant deodorant can also help to reduce unpleasant body odour – remember deodorant does not replace the

need to wash!

Oily Hair The hormones that create acne are the same ones that can make you feel like you're suddenly styling your hair with a

comb dipped in motor oil.

Washing your hair every day or every other day can help control oily hair.

Oral Health Bad breath can be off putting and decrease the individuals confidence

Brushing your teeth twice a day but at least once a day will prevent bad breath

Good oral hygiene can reduce the need to go to the dentist as often

I work Monday, Tuesday and every second Thursday across all the Campuses of Kurnai. Students can organise to see me by

talking to their teachers or the welfare team or email [email protected]

Short period Homestay families required

Kurnai College will again be hosting short term Chinese Study tours and at this stage we have received confirmation that we have three visiting groups. We are looking for families who would be interested in hosting a Chinese student/s for up to a week.

While at Kurnai, they will be participating in a mix of English Language classes located at the University Campus and immersion

classes at the Junior Campuses. These classes will be followed up by organised afternoon activities within the local area.

The Homestay is to provide a welcoming, nurturing and safe environment for young students, as it will likely be the first time these students have been out of China. If possible, it may pay to consider having two students billeted with your family making it less daunting and easier for you and the students.

Hosting an international student is very rewarding and offers a wonderful opportunity to learn about a new culture and share our Australian way of life. This would be a great opportunity to consider for our students who are currently studying Mandarin or have/will be participating in our trips to China.

Host families are paid a nominal fee of $30.00 per night per student, which is to assist with food, accommodation and transportation as required for students that are living with them.

The estimated dates for these visits are:

19th – 26th July Students from Jiyun Experimental School

30th July – 4th August Students from Kouan Middle School

10th – 16th August Students from Fuzhou Centre for Overseas Studies
