Welcome Back!

I would like to take this opportunity to extend a warm welcome to all new and returning families.

Morwell Campus takes pride in being an active part of the Morwell Community, and we welcome any suggestions and

feedback at any time. If you are unsure about any aspect of your child ’s education, or the services that we offer, do not

hesitate to contact the General Office, where your inquiry will be re-directed as appropriate.

Gia Lewis

Sadly for us, Gia has tendered her resignation during the holidays.

I know Gia will be missed by many of our students and their families, as

she has developed some invaluable relationships during her time here at

Morwell Campus.

We wish Gia all the best in wherever her future journey takes her.

Building Update

Unfortunately there is not much to update on this project as progress has been minimal during the break. This is extremely

disappointing for us.

None-the-less, the next stage of the demolition is currently being undertaken, and we will have our first site meeting with the

architects and builders this week.

world. Wenjing has worked at Kurnai College as a Confucius Classroom teacher, teaching Chinese in partnership with other

teachers. She returns to us now as a teacher of Chinese and English.

Eloise O’Brien is returning to mainstream education having been heavily involved in the set-up of our Young Parents Campus,

and prior to that at Churchill Campus. Eloise teaches English, Humanities and Media.

MORWELL CAMPUS - PATHWAYS TO SUCCESS

Year 7 News ……….

Daniel Swallow

Year 7 Team Leader

[email protected]

Settling in at Year 7 can be one of the hardest times a student faces. Our 2018 cohort

have done an amazing job of settling in. We are seeing new friendships forming,

engagement in all of the classes, and smiles around every corner.

The last few days have included lots of information, so some students may be feeling

a little out of depth at times. Parents are emailing me or calling me to check in when

there are uncertainties, and you should feel welcome to do that for what may feel the

simplest questions. I can be emailed at [email protected] or you can call

me at the school on 5165 0600.

Excursions & Camps

Students have received three permission forms this week, on top of their photos form and a letter about

immunisations. Please ensure that all three forms, and the other two documents, have made it home.

School Sports Days: There is no cost associated with this form. All students need to return the form and attend. This

is an opportunity to bring the whole College together and we use the one permission form for both our swimming and

athletics sports days.

Team Building Day: Our year level teams do a trip to the pool at the start of the year for a fun day of getting to know

each other. This is an important opportunity for early relationship building and our students.

Camp Coolamatong: Our camp goes in June, but deposits are due very soon. The camp, like the Team Building Day, is

imperative for relationship building. We also aim to build teamwork and resilience on the camp through a variety of

activities. We try very hard to keep the cost of camp low, and Coolamatong is the cheapest of the camps your child

will do at high school to encourage as many students to attend as possible. If financial difficulties are impacting on

your child’s ability to attend, please contact me to work through them with you.

Collingwood Footballer Visit

We welcomed a visit from some Collingwood footballers this week, who talked with the students about leadership, resilience

and work ethic. They also did some ball skills with the students at the end. Their messages were very positive and the

students responded really well to the session.

Student Leadership

I am pleased that a large number of students have returned applications for our student leadership positions. Those

students will be interviewed in the coming week and we will be able to announce our four student leaders in the next

newsletter.

Year 8 News ……….

Kellie Asmussen

Year 8 Team Leader

[email protected]

What’s coming up in Year 8!

New Year, New Leader

Welcome back to the new year! It certainly has been a busy two weeks learning about

Kurnai! While I know the area and have lived in the Latrobe Valley all my life I have never

encountered Kurnai over the many years I have spent teaching in the area.

This is an exciting time at Year 8 and I look forward to carrying on with Dan Swallow ’s

great work started when students were in Year 7. We have a firm belief that we will all

be successful by supporting Kurnai’s pillars around Work Ethic, Excellence, Engagement

and Relationships.

Please bear with me as I learn more about the place and the names of all students,

parents and staff members! If you have any questions or are experiencing any issues,

contact me and I will help you as much as I can.

13 February School Swimming Sports (Moe Pool)

22 February Team Building Day (Mirboo Nth Pool)

8-12 October Year 8 Camp (Karoonda Park)

New Staff and Students

The new year has meant that there are many new students enrolling and there are also some new staff starting. Kurnai

welcomes all! I definitely know how difficult being a new face can be, so please help us newbies out as much as you can so

we can all get to know each other!

Events

There are a number of events coming up that we look forward to, so please make sure the permissions forms are completed

and returned ASAP. Hopefully, the hot weather will continue for our Swimming Sports and the Team Building Day which will

take place at Mirboo North pool. We are looking forward to spending time getting to know each other and love attending all

the extra-curricular events that make Kurnai a great place to learn.

Camp

While camp seems a long way away, now is the time to start making payments. The

due date very quickly creeps up and it is best to plan for this one well in advance as

there are some large costs involved. The camp is well regarded as being a fun chance

to get away and learn about the great places we have in Victoria that can keep us

occupied.

Kurnai College Four Pillars

Engagement: We actively participate in our own learning

Excellence: We do the best that we can do

Work Ethic: We are committed to working hard

Hudson, Ms Jessica Qu, Ms Eloise O’Brien, Ms Megan Boland, Mr Steven Dockley and Ms

Secondary School vaccinations in 2018

The Secondary School Vaccine Program offers free vaccines to Year 7 and 10 students.

These vaccines provide protection against:

Diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis (whooping cough) – one dose for year 7 students

Human Papillomavirus (HPV) – two doses for year 7 students

Meningococcal A,C,W,Y – one dose for year 10 students

Parents/guardians of year 7 and 10 students should look out for the vaccine consent card

booklet coming home from school with your child. You need to read the information, com-

plete and return the card regardless of whether your child is being vaccinated at school.

The Latrobe City immunisation service may contact you about the Secondary School Vac-

cine Program. Schools are authorised to provide basic parent/guardian contact details to

local councils for this purpose. Contact the school by 28 February 2018 if you do not want

your contact details given to the Latrobe City immunisation service.

To learn more about the Secondary School Vaccine Program, the vaccines, the diseases

they protect against, or how you can prepare your child for vaccination, go to bet-

terhealth.vic.gov.au

Additionally, the Commonwealth government is funding vaccinations for all children under

20 years who missed scheduled vaccines. If students have missed vaccines, either in child-

hood or adolescence, and require catch-up vaccines, they should speak with their immun-

isation provider. (ie. local council or GP).

School Nurse Update

Using technology responsibly

Technology is an integral part of life for all of us. As parents, it can sometimes be hard to

keep up with the constantly evolving new developments in technology that attract chil-

dren and teens. While we may not always be able to keep up with every latest thing, we

can introduce a framework for our family so that the younger members can develop a

healthy and safe relationship with technology.

Here you’ll find our top tips and conversation starters to encourage your teenager to

use technology responsibly.

Technology is a part of life. Help your child recognise that it’s a privilege to have this

‘tool’ and that they should use it responsibly. That means sticking to the rules you set up

for its use.

It’s an important lesson to learn that online material is forever. How does your child

want to be seen in the world – not just now, but when they’re an adult looking for a job?

Respect is key. Teach your child not to say or do anything online that could hurt or hu-

miliate anyone, just as you would expect them to behave in real life.

They must only make friends with people they know in real life and should not do any-

thing that they know you would be unhappy with, such as forwarding material that

would hurt or embarrass someone else.

If they ever receive material that is private, such as personal or explicit photos or videos,

they should delete them immediately. Failure to do this could have very real conse-

quences.

This information is available at Reachout.com

I work Monday, Tuesday and Thursdays across all the campuses of Kurnai. Students or

families can organise to see me by talking to their teachers or the welfare team or email

Information for Parents—Schools’ Privacy Policy

The Department has developed a new Schools' Privacy Policy and related documents for all Victorian government schools. The new Schools’ Privacy Policy will be implemented over term one of 2018 and will replace any existing privacy policies used by schools.

The Schools’ Privacy Policy informs the school community that information about students can be shared to fulfil the schools’ core functions of educating and supporting our students.

The Schools’ Privacy Policy establishes a clarified ‘need to know’ framework, where school staff share information about stu-dents with other staff who need to know as part of their role. This is consistent with Victorian privacy law.

For the detailed information, please go to:

http://www.education.vic.gov.au/Pages/School's-Privacy-Policy-information-for-parents.aspx
