Coles Sports for Schools

This year Morwell Campus is participating in the Coles Sports for Schools program. We have collection boxes for coupons in

the foyer and in the Coles supermarket in Mid-Valley. If you are shopping in Coles, please ask for your vouchers, and place

them in the collection box either in the store or in the foyer here at school.

Head Lice

In a school as large as ours, it is almost certain that there will be at least one case of head lice at any time.

Please be reminded that you have signed a consent for head lice inspections to be carried out where deemed appropriate.

We understand that this is a sensitive issue for students and their families, and the person carrying out such inspections will

always explain what is being done, and emphasise that having head lice does not mean that their hair is any less clean or well

-kept than anyone else. The check will always be discreet, and confidentiality will be maintained.

Elsewhere in this newsletter is information about how to conduct a head lice check at home, as well as how to treat them if

they are present.

Health regulations require that students be kept at home until appropriate treatment has commenced.

NAPLAN Testing

These tests are not coming up until the middle of next term, but teachers across the curriculum will be helping students get

ready for the tests by assisting them with skills and strategies that will help them shine.

This is not about “teaching to the test”, but simply giving our students the opportunity to really showcase what they can do.

The skills students will learn are transferable to other more important assessments and tests, including CATs, VCE exams,

and more general things like aptitude tests for apprenticeships and other career pathways.

After-school Study Club

Our after-school study club has now been running for two weeks, and has attracted over twenty students both times.

Students have come along to get extra help, and also just to have somewhere to sit and do their homework. They have

then enjoyed some pizza before heading off home.

Parents and carers should note that students can come to this any time, and are not required to attend regularly. Please

ensure your child lets you know that they are attending, so that you are not unduly concerned if they do not arrive home

on time.

Year 7 Camp

Deposits and forms for Year 7 camp are overdue and I have been following up with

students that haven’t returned forms yet. I will be following up with families in the

coming week if those forms are still outstanding.

The Year 7 camp at Camp Coolamatong is one of the most important events for the

students and is essential to help them feel a part of the cohort.

On the Friday 23rd February 2018 the Team Building Day was on for Year 7. Almost everyone went into the pool which included the

teachers.

We had a range of different pool equipment to use throughout the day, this was about having fun and relaxing by the pool. This was

also an opportunity for the students and staff members to get to know about each other.

We had an obstacles course in the deep end and even Mr Swallow went on it, followed by a sausage sizzle for lunch.

Performance Reports

We have handed out certificates for all students who have achieved a performance indicator score above 3.5. This score is

visible in the bottom right corner of their performance updates which you can find on Compass. Please feel free to contact

me for support in accessing reports if you need.

I have explained to the students that expectation is for them to achieve performance indicators higher than 3.0, and it is very

pleasing to see that this is the case for most students.

Team Building Day

We recently had our Year 7 Team Building Day at the Mirboo North Pool. This was a fantastic opportunity to see the kids

outside of the classroom environment and build relationships with them that can impact on our work in the classroom. It was

also great to see the students building better relationships with each other, particularly as a year level rather than just as a

class.

What’s coming up in Year 8!

Team Building Day

The Team Building Day was a great success and more than one of us had a great time

falling off Nessie, the inflatable! The weather conditions on the day were absolutely

perfect as was the food and those who cooked and organised it. The event was also

well attended and we look forward to spending more time with each other at all

excursions this year. Everyone should be really proud of how well the day went.

Fun times on the Year 8 day by Amee and Hayley

The Year 8 Team Day was splashing fun. It was filled with heaps of fun and we were given heaps of food. The watermelon was just

perfect and the burgers were just like MasterChef burgers. Nessie was a challenge but we all had a go, even Ms A who fell off twice

before doing it. Everyone was enjoying themselves and actually having fun instead of being at school and doing work. We had

shoulder wrestles in the water and lazed around on pool noodles. It was a day that will always be remembered.

Camp

The booking has been made – we are going to Karoonda Park in October and we are

looking forward to it already. Making early payments is a great way to plan for the cost.

Remember, assistance can make events like this a reality rather than a dream so give

us a call if you are experiencing financial hardship and we will try to help where we

can.

Team Building Day

Last Wednesday the Year 9’s headed up the hill to Mirboo North Swimming Pool for

their Team Building Day. They had a beautiful sunny day and the pool was looking

great. Students were able to build new relationships and strengthen existing ones in a

relaxed and fun environment. There were lots of options for students on the day,

including water-based games and a game of marks up with the football, relaxing in

the shade with friends, helping with the BBQ and trying to navigate Nessie, the pool

monster. Nessie was by far the favourite activity on the day and students spent hours

attempting to make it all the way across the slippery surface. Some students had

more fun making some spectacular dismounts rather than trying to get all the way

across. Whatever the approach, the Year 9’s had a great day, with some students even

trying and enjoying some vegetarian falafels for the first time.

Over Half Way!

Congratulations to all students for making it over half way through Term 1. Keep up the positive efforts and prepare well for

any upcoming assessments.

Learning Behaviour Updates

The recent Learning Behaviour Updates are on display in the front windows of the Year

9 Office. Students have been tracking their progress and having conversations about

how to keep improving. It’s great to see students using this data to improve their

learning. If you haven’t had a look yet, please do so and keep thinking about how to

move your results forward.

Phones / Uniform / Bags to Class

A reminder to all students to keep using phones appropriately in class. Most students are following teacher guidelines

relating to phone use really well. Keep up the good work. Please also make sure you are in full uniform each day. Full uniform

includes a Kurnai College polo shirt, jumper or jacket and blue pants, shorts or a school dress. Students are also reminded

that they should not be taking bags to class unless they have a practical PE lesson. Please see Mr Bennett if you need to

clarify any of the areas above.

Electronic Display

There is also an electronic monitor displaying important information and upcoming dates in

the window of the Year 9 Office. Make sure you check this each day so that you stay informed.

Thank you to the seven girls who attended the BrainSTEM Challenge at Florey Institute

yesterday. A great day was had by all and the two teams have come up with two great

projects to complete over the next 12 weeks. Pictures will follow in the next

newsletter.

GPA Scores

Congratulations to all those students who have excellent GPA scores for March as well

as those students who have improved their previous score from November last year.

Work Experience

All Year 10 students will be attending two weeks of Work Experience Week 2 and Week 3 of Term 2, 23rd April – 4th May. The

students will be arranging a placement or two during their Team Time classes this term. Please contact Kylie Downey if you

have any issues.

Camp

After receiving the final Expression of Interest forms, we have had to cancel

the Central Australia trip. The minimum number to run this camp was 30 plus

and only 13 students returned the form from three campuses. We have

contacted the company (GET tours) and we are looking into an alternative

trip, possibly the Gold Coast or Tasmania. Further details will follow.

College Athletics Day

The College Athletics Day is on Thursday 22nd March. It would be great to see as many students participating as possible.

Please return permission forms ASAP to the office.

PBS

Students can now receive a cut out on their ticket for showing consistent positive behaviours regarding the school matrix by

their teacher. These tickets, once filled in (all 20 cut outs), can be cashed in for $2 at the Canteen. Students are also receiving

postcards for displaying consistent behaviours for the four school pillars of Excellence, Relationships, Work Ethic and

Engagement.

Secondary School vaccinations in 2018

The Secondary School Vaccine Program offers free vaccines to Year 7 and 10 students.

These vaccines provide protection against:

Diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis (whooping cough) – one dose for year 7 students

Human Papillomavirus (HPV) – two doses for year 7 students

Meningococcal A,C,W,Y – one dose for year 10 students

Parents/guardians of year 7 and 10 students should look out for the vaccine consent card

booklet coming home from school with your child. You need to read the information, com-

plete and return the card regardless of whether your child is being vaccinated at school.

The Latrobe City immunisation service may contact you about the Secondary School Vac-

cine Program. Schools are authorised to provide basic parent/guardian contact details to

local councils for this purpose. Contact the school by 28 February 2018 if you do not want

your contact details given to the Latrobe City immunisation service.

To learn more about the Secondary School Vaccine Program, the vaccines, the diseases

they protect against, or how you can prepare your child for vaccination, go to bet-

terhealth.vic.gov.au

Additionally, the Commonwealth government is funding vaccinations for all children under

20 years who missed scheduled vaccines. If students have missed vaccines, either in child-

hood or adolescence, and require catch-up vaccines, they should speak with their immun-

isation provider. (ie. local council or GP).

Only around 1 in 10 young people inform a parent or trusted adult of cyberbullying. Some

reasons for this low number include embarrassment, fear of not being believed, fear of hav-

ing the issue trivialised, or losing access to technology. Taking proactive steps to educate your

child about what they can do about cyberbullying can be a good way to ensure they approach

you for support when they need it. A good place to get information is the Keep it Tame web-

site. It gives a great overview about cyberbullying.

How to be proactive about cyberbullying

To be proactive about cyberbullying you can:

ensure that your child only friends and chats with people on social media that they know in real life

ensure that privacy settings are set on all your child’s social media accounts

make sure your child knows not to share or give out passwords

ensure that your child knows how to block, delete or report anyone who is upsetting them online.

What to do if you know your child is being cyberbullied

If you know your child is being cyberbullied, the first thing to do is to be supportive and empa-

thetic. Make sure that they know it’s not their fault. Cyberbullying is serious and upsetting, so

try not to minimise or trivialise the situation in order to make your child ‘feel better’. Avoid the

temptation to stop your child going online at all; this will more likely result in them not telling

you if it occurs again.

Ways to offer emotional support to your child include:

speak to your child and really listen to what they have to say. Thank them for opening up to you, and let them know that you want to put an end to the bullying.

never blame your child for experiencing cyberbullying. The way young people interact online may seem excessive to adults, but bullying is never the fault of the person being bullied.

acknowledge their feelings and don’t try to dismiss their experiences, even if it doesn’t seem like a big deal to you.

reassure them that there are people who can offer support, whether this is you, their teachers or other professionals and services.

if your child is distressed about the bullying, encourage them to speak to a mental health professional, or direct them to services that can help. This may be a school counsellor, or a service like Kids Helpline.

Information for Parents—Schools’ Privacy Policy

The Department has developed a new Schools' Privacy Policy and related documents for all Victorian government schools. The new Schools’ Privacy Policy will be implemented over term one of 2018 and will replace any existing privacy policies used by schools.

The Schools’ Privacy Policy informs the school community that information about students can be shared to fulfil the schools’ core functions of educating and supporting our students.

The Schools’ Privacy Policy establishes a clarified ‘need to know’ framework, where school staff share information about students with other staff who need to know as part of their role. This is consistent with Victorian privacy law.

Calling for feedback on the Youth Space Latrobe design principles

The Youth Space Latrobe project has been underway over the past few months. Young people have discussed what it is like to live in the Valley, what issues are important and what they think is needed in the Valley to help them thrive.

Led by our Youth Core Design Team, young people came together in February 2018 to workshop what activities and ser-vices a new youth space could provide, where the youth space should be located, and explore design concepts. Some of

the students at your school were involved in this process.

These workshops led to the creation of nine design principles that will inform the creation of a new Youth Space Latrobe.

The Youth Core Design Team would love to know the community's thoughts on these principles. A short, de-identified

survey has been created to describe and evaluate the design principles.

We are seeking your feedback and your support in getting this survey out to your school community.

Once the design principles have been refined, they will be presented to the Victorian Government for consideration.
