MORWELL CAMPUS - PATHWAYS TO SUCCESS
A reminder that there is now a “hoody”- styled jumper as part of the School uniform. These look nice, are of good quality, and are warm.
Other clothing items that may be worn must not be visible, for example, a street wear hood from a jumper visible beneath a school polo. This just serves to make the uniform very unattractive.
We have a variety of second hand uniform in good condition, and Lowe ’s in Midvalley, our official Uniform supplier, have good stocks of all uniform requirements.
Students arriving out of uniform will change into freshly washed College-owned uniform for the day.
Empowering Bystanders Program On Tuesday we have Jamie Roberts, Youth Worker and creator of the ‘It’s My School Too – Empowering
Bystanders’ program coming to present workshops to all our students as part of our ongoing commitment to
student wellbeing and ensuring our school environment is a safe and inclusive one.
The Empowering Bystander workshops are designed to provide all students with a range of useful strategies
they can use in helping to reduce or eliminate unkind behaviours should they find themselves bystanders and
unsure of what they can do to make a difference for the better.
An important message delivered in the workshops is the understanding that the vast majority of students at our
school (or any school) choose not to treat others unkindly and do not believe bullying of any kind is OK. It is in
the empowering of this vast majority to play a vital role in creating the kind of school environment that all
students can get the most out of, that is key in making sure 100% of students understand that bullying and
unkind behaviours have no place in our school.
The workshops are full of interaction with our students including the use of a range of videos featuring young
people of a similar age that reinforce the learnings and strategies delivered by Jamie. This includes the guiding
principal of the ‘It’s My School Too’ program that is “there is always something you can do” should students find
themselves bystanders to bullying or other unkind behaviour.
Teachers will have resources to follow up in the classroom on key learnings and messages presented in the workshop and, as always, are available to speak individually with students should they have a concern or question arising from the workshop content.

BOYS TO THE BUSH
Recently, ten of our boys went to Boys in the Bush, a camp just out of
Albury. They had some great experiences, including activities such as fishing,
yabbying, shearing and marking sheep, woodworking, and spotlighting. Last
week they had a presentation from the camp. Each of the boys received a
personalised recommendation letter for the efforts they put in to the camp,
which challenged them a number of times. The camp staff had also put
together a DVD of photographs and interviews with the boys which they had
an opportunity to see and show to some of the other staff at the school. The
boys have reflected on the camp as a very positive experience and we are
currently looking at options for being able to offer the camp again for next
year.
NAPLAN
We are really proud of the Year 7 cohort for their efforts during NAPLAN. They have shown focus and care for
their testing, despite the tiring nature of having many tests over the week.
Camp Coolamatong
The Year 7 camp is coming up fast. Please ensure that your payments are up to date. A packing list will be sent
home soon and all students are expected to either be at camp or at school for the week. If you have any
concerns about camp, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Sports
At the time of writing this, we have students out at the regional sports for
netball and soccer. It’s always great to have our kids getting involved in extra
curricular activities. We wish them well and are sure they will represent the
College proudly.
Karoonda Camp
Participation in school camps is really important for building relationships and developing resilience and
teamwork. There are opportunities we can afford to students in the camp environments that cannot be
easily reproduced in the school grounds. We are still able to get some more students on to the Year 8 camp
and I would strongly encourage families to consider the opportunity. Our feedback from students who have
attended in the past is always very positive. If you are experiencing financial concerns, please contact me to
discuss further how we can support your child to participate in these incredible experiences.

Australian Defence Force visit
The ads tell us that the Navy, Army and Air Force have hundreds of jobs to choose from and this week, Kurnai
College Morwell Campus Year 9 students were privileged to be visited by Air Force Officer Jocelyn and Army
Officer Danny who shared their own stories and career highlights while serving as Officers in the Australian
Defence Force.
Many students were surprised to learn of the different opportunities and benefits available, such as a free
University Degree, being paid to study, travel throughout Australia and the world, fight in combat zones, serve
peace-keeping missions and assist communities during times of natural disaster.
With pathways to a variety of roles, for example combat, logistics, education, medical, administration and
engineering, students have once again had access to experts who have first-hand experience in a career that
just may be the right one for them.
A question and answer time followed with Jocelyn and Danny recommending that interested students visit
http://m.defencejobs.gov.au/ for more information. As always, students can speak with Year 9 Team Leader,
Cleo Lazaris or Kylie Downey in Careers and Pathways.

Australian Defence Force visit
Recently two members of the Australian Defence Forces, Joss and Daniel visited Kurnai College,
Morwell Campus. They told us about the benefits of becoming an Australian Defence member.
Joss is with the Australian Air Force and Daniel is a part of the Army. They told us that the majority
of jobs in the Army don’t involve combat and weapons. Joss worked as a mechanic and Daniel
worked as an electrician. They also told us that they pay reasonably well and after retiring from
the Australian Defence Force you will be looked after by the Government.

Work Experience
This year’s work experience has been a wonderful success for our Year 10
students. As expected, students have reported being exhausted and not
used to the demands of being on their feet for an entire day. They were
required to leave their phone out of sight whilst working, which is quite
difficult for many people, however our students rose to the challenge. Some
students were able to pick up part-time work whilst others left a positive
impression, which will serve them well in the future. Well done to all of our
students who completed their placement and a huge thank you to the staff
who worked with our students to prepare for work experience and who
visited students whilst on their placement.
Mid-Year Exams
Please see the exam timetable attached. Exams are compulsory for all Year 10
students. I encourage all students to continue revising on a daily basis for
their exams and to seek help from their classroom teachers, in and out of
class.
Students studying a VCE subject will be required to be up to date and ask
their teachers about the work they missed whilst on Work Experience.
Central Australia Camp A reminder to keep making the scheduled payments for the Central Australia camp. An itinerary and equipment list will be provided during Term 3.
Keys Please
Earlier this week Grant Phillips from Victoria Police gave a presentation to all Year 10 students on maximising their learner driver experience.

Insurance and Ambulance Cover
Parents are reminded that the Department does not provide personal accident
insurance for students. Parents and guardians are responsible for paying the cost
of medical treatment for injured students, including any transport costs. In some
circumstances, medical or other expenses will be paid by the Department where it
is assessed that it is likely, that the Department is liable for negligent (careless) acts
or omissions of its staff or volunteers..
Student accident insurance policies are available from some commercial insurers.
These cover a range of medical expenses not covered by Medicare or private
health insurance.
Personal property is often brought to school by students, staff and visitors. This
can include mobile phones, calculators, toys, sporting equipment and cars parked
on school premises. The Department does not hold insurance for personal prop-
erty brought to schools and has no capacity to pay for any loss or damage to such
property.

SAFEMinds for Parents and Carers
Kurnai College is introducing an online resource for parents and carers which provides videos and information to increase your understanding about mental health problems. The program is intended to increase your ability as a parent or carer to identify mental health problems with your adolescent and to know what to do if you think your adolescent has a mental health problem.
The SAFEMinds website provides information about common issues that adolescents face such as promoting healthy sleeping, diet and exercise. There are also links to useful resources and helplines.
You can access the online training page at: http://deecd.tech-savvy.com.au/
Parents and Carers will need to select “SAFEMinds” from the course list and, when prompted, enter the password: SAFEMinds-Guest. This will give you access to the full range of SAFEMinds resources.
If you have any trouble accessing the training please contact me.
I work Monday, Tuesday and Thursdays across all the campuses of Kurnai. Students can organise to see me by talking to their teachers or the welfare team or email [email protected]
