As we come to the month of May, and continue with

things like social distancing and the suspension of public

worship, I thought this might be a good time to share

with everyone where we are in terms of these

restrictions as they deal with the Church, and what the

future may hold.

First, here are some things that we do now know. Last

week, Governor Cooper extended the stay-at-home order in North Carolina until May

8th. After that, if all goes well and the pandemic has reached its zenith or is in decline,

then the state can begin a slow three phase re-opening process. In the first phase,

meetings would still be limited to 10 or less. The second phase would begin two or

three weeks later…and it is in that second phase of re-opening that churches could

begin to have public worship again. But even then, there would be strict guidelines to

follow (many of those have not yet been determined), and we would probably only be

able to have 50 folks in the Nave at one time.

Second, because of the extension of the Governor’s order, it means that the earlier

date of May 10th for the resumption of public worship is not possible. The earliest we

could reach this phase two would be late May or early June. Therefore, Bishop Jose’

has extended the suspension of public worship until the end of May. Exact dates are

just not known right now, and when they are, we will let everyone know immediately.

When we are able to safely resume worship, things will be a little different for a while.

Our numbers at each worship service will have to be smaller. We may have to add

another worship service in order to make those numbers ‘work.’ Social distancing will

still be in effect, even as we worship. Holy Communion will have to look different. We

won’t receive in quite the same way. There probably will not be a ‘coffee hour’ when

we first start back. And for those folks who are most vulnerable to this virus, you may

want to consider waiting longer to come back to worship. Be assured that folks at the

diocesan level are working on these procedures to re-open, as are members of your

vestry, worship & liturgy team, and safety & security team here at St. Peter by-the-

Lake.

Also, no matter when we re-open for worship, we will also continue in some form,

the on-line worship that has proven to be so helpful, and so graciously received, by so

many of you in the parish and community. The pandemic has forced us all to ‘step up

our game’ in learning to transmit the Gospel with new technologies. For those who

can’t come to worship, are homebound, or traveling, this will be yet another avenue

to join in the worship of our Lord.

Finally my sisters and brothers, continue to be in good cheer and to pray for the

church, community, nation and world. This pandemic will eventually pass, and we will

all be together again ‘in person’ for worship, formation and fellowship. Until then,

keep the faith…and pass it on to others.

Faithfully,

Father Ron

Worship interrupted can be the beginning of new life -- for the hungry, jobless, alone, fearful -- as

we, with eyes opened more widely, reach to them with Christ's love and grace .... and as we

reach to Christ more deeply reaching for greater depths of his love and grace in our lives.

IN THIS TIME WHICH IS SO UNUSUAL AND UNEXPECTED FOR EACH OF US,

WE CAN:

During this sudden and challenging time in our lives, PRAY. God answers every prayer. Pray for

all of your neighbors, friends, family, and all of God's family, his children, everywhere in the

world. God hears and answers every prayer.

All whom God has created are deeply hungry. TELEPHONE, CALL SOMEONE, listen to him or

her, encourage him or her. It makes an eternal difference. God desires that his love reach all of

his people, through us who are his own.

Know that God will always provide for you all that you need. And he will provide for you all that

you need to LOVE AND SERVE OTHERS.

The world is in great need; much healing is needed. PRAY MUCH THAT THOSE WHO NEED

INNER OR OUTER PHYSICAL HEALING WILL RECEIVE HEALING. God answers prayer.

READ GOD'S WORD WHICH WAS WRITTEN FOR AND TO ALL OF US. God in Christ is

guiding you; you are God's beloved. As you stay close to God in prayer for others, and in

"hearing" his word and guidance in the Scriptures, you will find increased strength, new depths of

Resurrection life, newness of all of your life, and new depths of Christ in us, God with us, and

greater depths of relationship with God in Christ.

In Christ's great love,

During this time of quarantine and social distancing I find myself thinking of inspirational hymns. Just reading the words of one of those hymns is a great devotional / meditation for me. The hymn I want to focus on today is “His Eye Is On the Sparrow” written by Civilla Martin in the early twentieth century. She was a Canadian lady educated in Nova Scotia. She taught school for a short time before meeting and marrying Dr. William Martin, an evangelist and musician. Together they had an itinerate ministry. As they traveled around they often stayed in private homes as guests. Early in the spring of 1905, they stayed with Mr. and Mrs. Doolittle in Elmira, New York, and developed a strong friendship with the couple. Civilla credits this couple with inspiring her verses in “His Eye is on the Sparrow”.

Mr. and Mrs. Doolittle both had serious medical conditions. Mrs. Doolittle had been bedridden for over 20 years, and Mr. Doolittle was confined to a wheelchair. According to Mrs. Martin, the couple had a bright, positive attitude and brought comfort and inspiration to all who knew them. When asked for their secret, Mrs. Doolittle replied “His eye is on the sparrow, and I know he watches me.” (umcdiscipieship.org). The outcome of that experience was the hymn we know today. Mrs. Martin sat down and wrote the lyrics that evening. The next day she mailed a copy of her poem to gospel composer Charles Gabriel , and he wrote the tune for the hymn.

This hymn was sung as a source of inspiration for African Americans during the civil rights movement. It has been recorded by many artists over the years, and Mahalia Jackson’s recording of the song was honored with the Grammy Hall of Fame Award in 2010. “His Eye is on the Sparrow” continues to be an inspiration today.

‘His Eye is on the Sparrow’

Why should I feel discouraged, why should the shadows come, Why should my heart be lonely, and long for heaven and home,

When Jesus is my portion? My constant friend is He: His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me; His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.

I sing because I'm happy, I sing because I'm free,

For His eye is on the sparrow, And I know He watches me.

"Let not your heart be troubled," His tender word I hear,

And resting on His goodness, I lose my doubts and fears; Though by the path He leadeth, but one step I may see; His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me; His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.

I sing because I'm happy, I sing because I'm free,

For His eye is on the sparrow, And I know He watches me.

Whenever I am tempted, whenever clouds arise,

When songs give place to sighing, when hope within me dies, I draw the closer to Him, from care He sets me free;

His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me; His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.

I sing because I'm happy, I sing because I'm free,

For His eye is on the sparrow, And I know He watches me.

I don’t know about you, but I have been

missing church – especially Sunday School!

Since we are still practicing social distancing, as

we approach the time of Pentecost, I thought I

would share a short lesson with you that you

can do at home with your family (or solo).

Pentecost (Acts 2:1-41) May 2020 One Room Sunday School® Permission is granted to customize original text and duplicate this resource

for local church use only.

PLAN Supplies Basic Supplies: Bible | Deep Blue Adventure Video (Link below) | Pencils | Crayons | Markers | Scissors | Glue | Paper Supplies for Extra At-Home Activity: Bubble mixture and bubble wands Before You Begin Each year, we celebrate Pentecost. It is a time to remember how God powerfully sent the Holy Spirit as the promised helper. The followers of Jesus were gathered in a room when they heard and felt a mighty wind blowing around them. They saw little flames of fire above their heads. The Holy Spirit filled all of them. They began talking about what had happened, and all the people from different lands understood what they were saying. More than three thousand people believed the disciples’ message, were baptized, and became a part of the church. It was the birthday of the New Testament church! Pentecost Picture (Craft) Before you begin: Print a copy of the Pentecost symbols for each person. TIP: You could also gather a variety of craft decorations, such as scraps of material, felt, yarn, beads, and so forth if you want to do something more in-depth than coloring with markers. • Give each person a copy of “Pentecost Picture.” SAY: Your picture is a collage of items that remind us of Pentecost. Look at the items on your picture and decide what they have to do with Pentecost. Color and decorate the pictures while I tell you more about each symbol.

• Talk about the different items. o Flames of fire appeared above the heads of everyone gathered in the room. o The sound of a strong, rushing wind filled the house and attracted the crowd

outside. o The word Pentecost means “50.” Pentecost is celebrated 50 days after Passover. o The dove is a symbol of the Holy Spirit. God sent the Holy Spirit on Pentecost Day

to indwell the followers. o Every year we celebrate Pentecost as the birthday of the church.

Read the Bible Story • Find and read Acts 2:1-41in your Bibles. ASK: ASK: What did Jesus’ followers do after they received the Holy Spirit? (They shared the good news of Jesus to the crowd.) How do you think they felt after experiencing the miracles that happened on Pentecost Day? See the Bible Story SAY: Sophia and Rachel are practicing their French in Mr. Maxwell’s classroom. Sophia tells the story of Pentecost Day when the disciples preached and people from many different countries heard in their native languages. • Watch today’s episode here: https://my.amplifymedia.com/amplify/video/unitedmethodistpublishinghouse/33162-deep-blueconnects-adventure-spring-2020/33300-lessons/112475-pentecost. ASK: How did the people hear what the disciples said in so many different languages? (a miracle, the power of the Holy Spirit) Sacred Conversations ASK: How do you think you would have felt if you had been part of the crowd on Pentecost Day? Blessing SAY: Before we end today, we are going to share a blessing with each other. Blessings show how special you are to God. • Go around the room and say the blessing. SAY: (Person’s name), God loves you. God remembers you. God will always be with you.

PRAY: Dear God, we praise you for the mighty power and miracles you showed on Pentecost Day. Help us boldly share the good news with others; in Jesus’ name we pray. Amen. Bubbles Blowing in the Wind (Extra At-Home Activity)

Before beginning: Gather bubble mixture and a bubble wand. SAY: On Pentecost, a great big wind filled the place the disciples were waiting for the Holy Spirit. We’re going to play with the wind while we blow bubbles. You can even blow a prayer into your bubble and send it on its way. • Together, blow bubbles together. You could also talk about what your joys and concerns are while you play. PRAY: Dear God, thank you for time together! Amen. You are missed!

A Message from Father Ron…

During this very different Easter Season the Presiding Bishop and the Episcopal Church

have developed a special Easter Calendar for us to consider. It begins the day after Easter and

continues through Pentecost Sunday. As we continue to practice things like ‘social distancing’,

the calendar gives us concrete ideas, each day, about how to love and pray and serve our

neighbors. Each day, Monday through Saturday, there is a ‘key’ word for the day that prompts

our faith to service. Those words are…’Turn’..’Learn’..’Pray’..’Worship’..’Bless’..and ‘Go.’ And

the great thing about this is that we can do them all from our homes! This Spiritually enriching

calendar comes with this message, and with my continued prayers for each and every person

here at St. Peter by-the-Lake, that as we continue to stay safe, we also continue to love and serve

our neighbors as ourselves. Blessings to you all…see you soon!

15

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Today, I write to provide you with a brief update on where we are as a diocese in response to Covid-19 and my hopes for in-person, public worship.

As you already know by now, earlier on Thursday, April 23 North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper shared an update to his Executive Order (EO120) which extends the Stay-at-Home mandate until May 8, 2020. He also further outlined the necessary metrics and a gradual three-phase approach to reopen our state. If our situation in North Carolina meets these metrics, the state will enter Phase 1 on May 8. This phase will last two to three weeks with specific indices before entering Phase 2.

According to the plan offered by state public health and medical professionals, houses of worship could begin offering in person worship in Phase 2 with specific safety guidelines. So, based on this proposed timeline, at the earliest, we might be able to begin offering some form of public worship Memorial Day weekend. We all must also anticipate that should the situation not improve, we will need to wait until a later date.

While none of us can predict with certainty the exact dates for any of these phases, I have already begun, with the input from other bishops, the Presiding Bishop's Office and numerous health officials, to formulate necessary guidelines for when we are allowed to return to public worship. As soon as there is clarity on the possible guidelines, I will begin to schedule conversations with the clergy and lay leaders of the diocese to discuss the proposed plan for resuming public worship.

At this time, until we know more, I am extending my current directive to suspend all public worship from May 10 until the end of May. If state officials indicate a more favorable timeline, I will be revisit this directive. In communion with the other bishops in North Carolina, I am committed to following the leadership and guidance of state medical officials in order to ensure that we come together in a responsible manner to care for all our neighbors.

I am so incredibly grateful and proud of the many ways each our clergy and lay leaders are utilizing technology appropriate for their church in order to provide heartfelt and transformative worship as well as build community. I am also appreciative for all the countless, creative ways you are staying connected and serving those in need.

Know you all remain in my prayers as we continue to walk together in the fellowship of the Risen Christ.

In Christ,

The Rt. Rev. José A. McLoughlin

Every year in October, members of Saint Peter by-

the-Lake Episcopal Church attend a weekend

retreat at the Valle Crucis Conference Center in

Valle Crucis, North Carolina. Our family has been

attending for the past seven years and we cannot

express how special this time away with family

and friends has been for us. Each year, Freya and

Greta look forward to this weekend. In addition to

sledding down the hill, playing games, making

s’mores over a fire, climbing trees, hiking or organizing a fundraiser each year for

a worthy cause, all the kids enjoy spending time together and have made lasting

friendships.

Matt and I also look forward to time with friends and meeting new people. We

have very fond memories of sitting in the rocking chairs on the front porch and

getting to know people on a more personal level. Saturday nights are always fun

with games and sing alongs, and time to relax. For me, the most special time of the

weekend is Sunday morning in the Apple Barn when we gather after breakfast for

church service. I love the charm and overall feel of the Apple Barn, and how we

all come together in Christ and worship together.

There is a wonderful feel of the mountains, sharing communion with fellow

church members, and singing praises to God. The members of our church have

been attending the Valle Crucis retreat for the past 25 years. All of us come away

with special memories and talk about how we can’t wait to come back next year

for our annual church family reunion.

We look forward to many more retreats to come, Jessica Gustis

What Valle Crucis Means to Me

October of 2003 was fast approaching and I didn’t have a plan yet. My husband had passed

away in May, and October would be the first wedding anniversary without him. I KNEW I

had to do something and should not spend it alone, but could not decide what to do or where

to go. Visiting my family was certainly an option…..but they would have smothered me with

love & unintentional sadness.

Steve & I had always talked about seeing what the big deal was with the parish’s retreat at

Valle Crucis, but unfortunately we did not have the opportunity to attend together. And in

2003, it just so happened that the Saturday of the retreat actually fell on my wedding

anniversary. That was it! I needed no other sign that I was supposed to spend that weekend

with my parish family in Valle Crucis. It was one of the BEST decisions I’ve ever made.

During my time of sadness, I was surrounded (and not smothered….there is a difference)

with so much love and kindness from everyone.

I had only been a member of St. Peter’s for 5 years and had not been a

very active member, so I really did not know a lot of people. And that’s

one of the many beauties of our parish retreat. It doesn’t matter how

many people you know or don’t know….or which service you attend…..or if

you are a party of one…..or if you have children or not. The parish

retreat brings all of together in love and support for one another. It’s a

wonderful opportunity for us to get to know each other better while

enjoying the lovely peacefulness that is Valle Crucis.

How does it get any better than that?! Well, it does and here are some examples….

Hearing the joyful sounds of kids having fun

Watching the kids sliding down the hill

Seeing kids of all ages that you’ve watched grow up taking care of one another

Participating in the fund-raising activities that the kids do Saturday afternoon

Watching those same kids beam with excitement as they present the funds they

raised as offering on Sunday morning…..bringing tears of joy to all of the adults

Sharing a beverage or two (you know who you are)

Playing games & sing-alongs on Saturday night

Discovering just how competitive some of us are…….not giving out any names here!

Beautiful Sunday worship in the Apple Bar

And of course ROCKING on the porch!

Page 18: MAY 2020images.acswebnetworks.com/1/3053/095322_MayNET2020.pdfPage 12 DOK & Men of St. Peters Page 13 M-O: Support during Shelter in Place Page 14 Easter Calendar ... When we are able

18

The impact the Valle Crucis retreat has had for me is

significant. Spending time with fellow parishioners in

the gorgeous mountain atmosphere that is Valle Crucis

provides a perfect storm of tranquility, love, closeness

and joy. It is a place where, just like St. Peter’s, all

are welcome.

The COVID-19 pandemic has tremendously impacted the Valle Crucis

Conference Center financially, and it is in jeopardy of having to close its

doors. This would be a tremendous loss to the mountain community, our diocese and

our parish. If you are in a position to do so, please prayerfully consider sending

them a donation.

With its beauty comes a sense of timeless spiritual grace that transcends denomination or faith tradition. The Valle Crucis Conference Center is located in the historic Mission School, featuring buildings dating from the late 19th Century and early 20th Century, nearly all of which are on the National Historic Register. The Conference Center is open year-round to accommodate groups of 5 to 150. Please give at https://vcconferences.org/giving

Helping Our Parishioners in

Need (HOPIN)

Volunteer Meal Program

Looking for a way you can help others and REALLY have an impact?

How about lending a helping hand to those who have had a serious illness, surgery,

new baby or experienced the loss of a loved one?

During these times of distress, purchasing food and its preparations can become a

major burden to the family. To help out families during this time of need, a food

preparation rotation program, HOPIN, was created.

This is not a committee to join, but rather an opportunity to be “on call” when

there is a need within our church family. The need may be to help supply prepared

foods for a funeral reception at church or meals for the home during times of

illness, recovery, or bereavement.

Here’s how it works. A list is maintained of all volunteers for the program.

Whenever the need arises, the volunteers are notified via 2 emails, one from the

meal coordinator (usually Sherree Brady), and the other from “meal train”. Meal

Train is a free web service that is used to facilitate meal & reception food sign up.

When notified, the volunteers, as they are available, can sign-up to provide a meal

using the Meal Train system. The program coordinator will notify the intended

recipient of the meal schedule so that they are aware of who will be contacting

them for meal delivery.

If you would like to lend a helping hand to our fellow church members in their time

of need, please contact Sherree Brady at 704-340-7814 or via email

([email protected]).

Thank you so much for your thoughtful consideration of this worthy cause.
