Sixth Sunday of Easter

Welcome To

St. Bernadette Church

“My peace I give you,” says

Jesus. “ … Do not let your

hearts be troubled and do not be

afraid” (John 14:27, NIV). As

we enter into worship, I invite

you to share the peace of Christ

with one another.

Commissioned & Sent Have you heard the Good News?

If you're reading this, chances are

you probably have. You've heard the

good news that God became man

and that Jesus suffered, died, and

rose for you, me, and everyone in

between. Do you know you're part

of it?

This week, we celebrate the

Ascension of our Lord. When Jesus

ascended into heaven, he gave

specific directions to his Apostles.

"Go and make disciples of all

nations." They listened! They made

disciples, who made disciples, who

made disciples, who made disciples,

on down the centuries. And here we

are! So what's next? The truth is that

we're all commissioned and sent. It happened at our baptism, when we

were made sharers in this sacred

mission of Jesus. Who will make the

next disciples? I hope it's you!

Jason Honeycutt at [email protected]

St. Bernadette Parish will have two part-time jobs opening

up soon.

We are looking for a Ministry Secretary to work 20 hours

per week. This person will support our Faith Formation

Team and other ministries, and should be adept at

Microsoft Office Suite.

Action. This position will be 25 hours per week.

Seven Things Every High School

Graduate Should Hear

1. Live with intention. College will be full of new

opportunities. Think carefully about your

priorities for your new start.

2. Make the right friends. There will be plenty of new

people! Concentrate on the ones who motivate

you to be a better person.

3. It's a big world! Look for new perspectives, new

opportunities, and new ideas that push you to

grow.

4. Find a mentor. Building relationships with people

who have "been there, done that" can be a great

help.

5. Give yourself away. You may not need to volunteer

anymore, but you'll surprised what you learn, how

you grow, and who you meet when you serve.

6. Before you go, learn how to do your laundry,

address an envelope, schedule a doctor's

appointment, use public transportation, and cook

basic meals (ramen doesn't count!).

7. Remember that God is in control. And that's a good

thing!

“Kindness is like

a garden of blessings.”

—Sirach 40:17

Christian Action

Day for Children with Disabilities

Every Person Contributing as They Are Able Equals a

Beautiful Bounty

Dear St. Bernadette Family,

Each Lenten Season the people of St. Bernadette host a six

week series of Lenten Soup Suppers.

The Knights of Columbus, Christian Action, Form, RCIA,

Faith Formation, Pastoral Council and ACTS, all cooked a

delicious soup each week and served it with great love.

Many other people provided labor to set up the tables, make

the power point, bring and serve desserts, collect donations,

clean up and count all of the coins! It takes many people

each serving as they are able.

This Lenten Season we selected UNBOUND, a Catholic

lay organization sponsoring seniors and children in 86

underserved areas of our world.

We all gave donations at the Lenten Soup Suppers and

filled bags with coins from our spare change. Each

contribution, (no matter the size) totaled a great amount!

The total amount of our donation to UNBOUND is

$8,335.79. May God bless the generous people of St. Bernadette!

Christ’s Peace.

Time and Talent

Question: Why is the Easter season so long? And should we be doing

something special for it?

Answer:

You've probably noticed the priest continuing to

where white vestments at the Sunday liturgy. While we

celebrated Christ's resurrection several weeks ago, the Easter

season extends fifty days - just over seven weeks - from Easter

Sunday to Pentecost. For most of that time - about six weeks -

Jesus is still with the disciples, teaching and encouraging

them. The Easter season isn't just a celebration of when Jesus

is with us. At the Last Supper, Jesus promised to send an

"advocate" or "counselor" when he left. At the Ascension, he

directs the disciples to await "power from on high" - the

coming of the Holy Spirit. The Ascension completes the

paschal mystery, beginning with Jesus' suffering and death and

continuing in the resurrection. But the Holy Spirit ushers in a

new era for the Church.

After spending weeks in prayer, fasting, and service

during Lent, it may seem odd that we don't widely have

similar practices for Easter. That doesn't mean you can't

embrace the season! Commit to taking moments of little joy

throughout the weeks, like random acts of kindness towards

others. Consider reading the Acts of the Apostles to learn more

about the early Church or picking up an Easter devotional to

pray with. He is still risen indeed!

SEASONAL REFLECTION

Mary, Elizabeth & Friendship

What does a 2,000-year-old girl talk and

look like? The Gospel tells us in the story

of the Visitation, recorded in Luke

Chapter 1. This week, we celebrate that

special feast when Mary visits Elizabeth.

So what can women learn from this

friendship?

Help a sister out. The Visitation involves a

first-trimester mother traveling cross-

country to serve a friend. Who needs your

help this week?

Affirm each other. Elizabeth's first words were ones of

encouragement. We may know our friends' flaws, but we

don't need to fixate on them.

Sing out loud. Mary ends their encounter with the Magnificat,

one of the most celebrated song-prayers of Scripture.

Celebrate with your friends! Rejoice over each other's

blessings.

GOSPEL MEDITATION What is the most common image

you've seen of the Ascension? It's

typically Jesus hovering above the

earth surrounded by brilliant light.

The Ascension is a beautiful feast,

but it's about more than the distant

glory of God. It's about the blessing

of God and the transformative power

of trust.

"You are witnesses to these things."

Before he ascends, Jesus reminds the

disciples of the basic message of the

Gospel and of the disciples' own

important role. They are to proclaim

the Gospel message by their personal

witness to the saving power of God.

"I am sending the promise of my

Father upon you... clothed with

power from on high." Jesus promises

to equip the disciples for this

important mission. Not only are they

receiving a command, but they're

receiving the empowerment they

need to move. "He... raised his

hands, and blessed them." Even now,

though the fulfillment of Pentecost is

still to come, Jesus gives them a

parting gift before he ascends into

heaven. Finally, "They... returned to

Jerusalem with great joy, and they

were continually in the temple

praising God."

The disciples faced an unknown

future. Their teacher had left them,

and the political and religious

authorities weren't exactly thrilled

about Jesus and his growing

movement. But the memory of our

Father's redemptive love, the

promise of the Holy Spirit, and the

blessing of Christ sustained them.

Jesus trusted them to act in his name.

They could trust him in return. Do

you face uncertainty in your own

life? Remember, we are all called to

be disciples and witnesses. We have

received the indwelling of the Holy

Spirit at our baptism. We are blessed

by Christ beyond imagining in the

sacraments. This Ascension feast,

we too can trust in God! With this

firm trust, we too can return to our

daily lives, praising God with great

joy!
