We draw on the talent of both local and international speakers.

Keynote SpeakersPARIS ARISTOTLE AMParis Aristotle AM is the Chief Executive Officer of the Victorian Foundation for Survivors of Torture Inc., also known as Foundation House. Paris has over 25 years’ experience in the field of supporting refugees and asylum seekers, particularly the provision of services to survivors of torture and trauma. Throughout this period, Paris has worked closely with the UNHCR in the field of refugee resettlement and served on a wide range of state and federal government bodies advising on refugee and asylum seeker policy, and multicultural affairs.

In 2012 he was appointed to the Prime Minister’s Expert Panel on Asylum Seekers. Paris is currently the Chair of the two federal government councils, the Settlement Services Advisory Council (SSAC) and the Minister’s Council on Asylum Seekers and Detention (MCASD). He is also an executive member of the Forum of Australian Services for Survivors of Torture and Trauma (FASSTT).

In 2002 Paris was made a Member of the Order of Australia and in 2003 was awarded an Australian Centenary Medal; both honours recognising his longstanding work with refugees, in particular survivors of torture and trauma. Paris is supported by the Agency Management Team and the Board of Management.

In November 2016, Paris was named as the 2017 Victorian Australian of the Year at a ceremony at Government House.

JOEL BACKWELLJoel Backwell is the Executive Director of the International Education Division of the Department of Education and Training, which is responsible for working with schools to deliver the International Student Program and facilitate the internationalisation of Victoria’s schools. In an increasingly globalised world, it is more important than ever that Victorian students are given the opportunities to engage with the world and learn from, and build relationships with, people from other countries and cultures.

From 2013-2015, Joel was the Trade Commissioner to Malaysia and Brunei, based in the Australian High Commission in Kuala Lumpur.

Joel has previously held roles in the Victorian Department of Premier and Cabinet and worked as a lawyer with Herbert Smith Freehills in Australia and across South East Asia.

LAURA McBAIN Laura McBain is the Director of External Relations and the Director of Education Leadership Academy at High Tech High in San Diego. Laura was a founding teacher of High Tech Middle and was the principal of two HTH sites and has worked in comprehensive schools prior to her work at HTH.

As the Director of External Relations, Laura conducts the HTH GSE Residencies, Institutes and off-campus workshops. She also works closely with external schools and districts to develop school reform initiatives centering around 21st century learning, charter school development and professional development.

As the Director of Education Leadership Academy, Laura works with teams of educators looking to transform their schools through the use of change leadership, deeper learning practices and equity structures. She has B.A. in English and minors in Political Science and Spanish from Miami University and an Ed.M. in Education Policy and Management from the Harvard Graduate School of Education.

GIHAN PERERA Gihan Perera is a futurist, conference speaker, author and consultant who gives business leaders a glimpse into what’s ahead - and how they can become fit for the future.

Since 1997, he has worked with business leaders, thought leaders, entrepreneurs, and other change agents - helping them with their strategy for thriving in a fast-changing world.

He has clients throughout Australia, as well as in New Zealand, South Africa, the United Kingdom, Singapore, the USA and Canada.

He is the author of “The Future of Leadership”, “Fast, Flat and Free”, “Out of Office”, “Webinar Smarts”, and seven other books.

As an educator, Gihan has been at the leading edge of presentation technology and online learning:

• He writes and presents for Citrix Global, a leading provider of online collaboration technology (such as GoToWebinar and GoToMeeting).

• He was one of a handful of invited guest contributors (along with Seth Godin and Nancy Duarte) to Garr Reynolds’ book Presentation Zen.

• He is one of a handful of Ambassadors for Thought Leaders Global.

• He hosts the eGurus Community, an online resource centre for speakers, trainers, consultants and thought leaders.

• He is a Gold Level author for the International Institute of Managers and Directors.

Forbes magazine rated him the #5 social media influencer in the world (and #1 in Australia) in his area of expertise. His formal background is in science and technology, with a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Western Australia. But he’s always been interested in people and the way they communicate -and how to leverage technology to deliver messages, extend reach, and live happier lives.

PROFESSOR YONG ZHAO Professor Yong Zhao is a Foundation Distinguished Professor in the School of Education at the University of Kansas. He is also a professorial fellow at the Mitchell Institute for Health and Education Policy, Victoria University in Australia. He previously served as the Presidential Chair and Director of the Institute for Global and Online Education in the College of Education, University of Oregon, where he was also a Professor in the Department of Educational Measurement, Policy, and Leadership. His works focus on the implications of globalization and technology on education. He has published over 100 articles and 30 books, including Counting What Counts: Reframing Education Outcomes(2016), Never Send a Human to Do a Machine’s Job: Correcting Top 5 Ed Tech Mistakes (2015), Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad Dragon: Why China has the Best (and Worst) Education System in the World (2014), Catching Up or Leading the Way: American Education in the Age of Globalization (2009) and World Class Learners: Educating Creative and Entrepreneurial Students (2012). He is a recipient of the Early Career Award from the American Educational Research Association. He is an elected fellow of the International Academy for Education.

Until December, 2010, Yong Zhao was University Distinguished Professor at the College of Education, Michigan State University, where he also served as the founding director of the Center for Teaching and Technology, executive director of the Confucius Institute, as well as the US-China Center for Research on Educational Excellence.

Zhao was born in China’s Sichuan Province. He received his B.A. in English Language Education from Sichuan Institute of Foreign Languages in Chongqing, China in 1986. After teaching English in China for six years, he went to Linfield College as a visiting scholar in 1992. He then began his graduate studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1993. He received his A.M. in Education in 1994 and Ph.D. in 1996. He joined the faculty at MSU in 1996 after working as the Language Center Coordinator at Willamette University and a language specialist at Hamilton College.

Workshop SpeakersDR MICHELLE ANDERSONDirector, Interface2Consulting: Michelle’s research, evaluation and facilitation work, here and overseas, reflect a passion for improving learning and community cohesion through effective relationships between education, not-for-profits, philanthropy and businesses. Her interests lie in the thinking, theory and practice of collaborative leadership and learning in a rapidly changing world.

Michelle has worked as a teacher, National College for School Leadership England senior researcher, ACER Principal Research Fellow and health and education executive. Her PhD was at the University of London. She has published widely, been on various boards and advisory panels and recipient of awards, including a Churchill Fellowship and ACEL Vic/Nat Fellowships.

DR JUSTIN COULSONDr Justin Coulson is one of Australia’s most respected relationships speakers, authors, and researchers.

Obsessed with what makes relationships flourish, Justin has spoken to tens of thousands of people about relationships in leadership, education, and especially in family life.

Justin is the author of two best-selling books: 21 Days to a Happier Family, and 9 Ways to a Resilient Child, as well as numerous empirical book chapters and peer-reviewed journal articles.

Justin has worked with The Commonwealth Bank, American Express, the Office of the Children’s E-safety Commissioner, The Federal Government’s Department of Social Services, Life Education, and dozens, if not hundreds, of schools. Justin is an Honorary Fellow at the Centre for Positive Psychology at the University of Melbourne’s Graduate School of Education, and a Senior Associate at the Positive Psychology Institute. In addition, Dr Coulson writes a weekly parenting advice column for Sydney’s Daily Telegraph, appears regularly on The TODAY show and he is the parenting expert at kidspot.com.au – Australia’s #1 parenting website.

Most importantly, Justin is an expert in wrestling (his) children, reading Dr Suess, sliding down steep hills on cardboard boxes, and teaching his children to ride bikes. He and his wife Kylie are the parents of six children and live in Brisbane.

ANDREW DOUCH Andrew Douch is a teacher and independent education consultant with 22 years classroom experience. He helps teachers amplify their impact on student learning by inspiring new thinking about teaching effectively in a technology rich world.

His essential message is that in a rapidly changing social and economic landscape, as technology becomes ever more plentiful, user-friendly and affordable, it is leveraged most powerfully, not by the most technologically capable teachers but by those most willing to look with fresh eyes at their pedagogy.

Andrew’s work at the nexus of education and technology has been acknowledged and endorsed by organisations as diverse as Microsoft, the IMS Global Learning Consortium and the Victorian Department of Education and Early Childhood Development. The innovative nature of his ideas has attracted numerous awards including an Australian Government Award for Quality Schooling, the Victorian Education Excellence Award for Curriculum Innovation and Microsoft’s Victorian, Australian and Worldwide Innovative Teacher of the Year awards.

TRAVIS GANDY With a strong background in Human Resources and Accounting and working towards a Masters in Information Technology, Travis brings a strong process improvement focus to the Compass team. Working with a range of schools throughout the country to get the best out of technology, Travis leads the Compass Operations team.

HOLLIE KANEHollie Kane is a secondary school teacher and leader who has worked in Victoria and the Northern Territory in remote, rural and urban schools. She has led school improvement initiatives within schools and across schools in her work with the Victorian Education Department. She is currently the Manager of the Professional Learning Communities in the North Eastern Victoria Region and believes that developing effective professional learning cultures are the key to transforming teacher practice.

DR BRONWYN HINZBronwyn is a Policy Fellow at the Mitchell Institute where her work examines policy reform, system coherence, program design, quality, equity, and opportunity across the education continuum, with a focus on schooling and the early years. Her PhD explored Victorian and Commonwealth school policy reforms and her work has won multiple national and international awards, with her analysis cited in scholarly works, in the media and by policy makers. Prior to joining the Mitchell Institute, she taught at the University of Melbourne, worked for two federal politicians as an adviser, and undertook commissioned research for the Education Foundation and other key bodies.

DR SALLY HUMPHREY Dr Sally Humphrey is a senior lecturer in literacy education at the Australian Catholic University in New South Wales. Sally has worked for many years as an academic literacy advisor, teacher trainer and educational linguist. Over the past twenty years, she has participated in a number of influential Australian literacy research projects, aimed to build teachers’ knowledge of language patterns of texts valued in the academic and civic domains.

Sally is the co-writer of a number of textbooks for introducing pre-service and practicing teachers to the knowledge about language included in the Australian Curriculum: English. Her most recent publication, Academic Literacies in the Middle Years, published by Routledge in 2017, reports on a framework for enhancing teacher knowledge and student achievement across middle years curriculum areas.

HANNAH MATUS Hannah Matus has significant public policy and project management experience in the areas of early childhood, schooling and child health and wellbeing. Prior to joining the Mitchell Institute as a Policy Analyst, Hannah worked at the Department of Education and Training for seven years, and has an academic background in the social sciences and psychology. In particular, she has considerable experience working on Victorian government-wide policy projects and initiatives designed to improve educational outcomes for vulnerable children and young people, and has provided policy support to a leading independent expert advisory council to the Victorian Government.

LELA McGREGOR Lela McGregor (MAPP, MMKtg, BBus, GAICD) is a positive psychology facilitator, accredited coach, and scientific-based wellness program designer. For over 25 years, Lela has held senior roles across a range of industries including Healthcare, Not-for-Profit, Arts, Automotive, Banking & Finance, Property, IT and Retail where she developed and implemented employee engagement initiatives and employee wellness programs.

Her passion turned to the education sector in 2013 when she produced and managed the Singapore Innovative Children’s Festival (sponsored by Abbott Nutrition South East Asia and the Singapore National Library). The children’s festival was the first of its kind in promoting the importance of play and creativity for primary school aged children in Singapore and was attended by over 5,000 teachers and students.

After completing her Master in Applied Positive Psychology Lela became the co-founder, together with Professor Lea Waters, of the Positive Detective Program, a positive education curriculum for early learning, primary and secondary years. This program is being used in schools in United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Mexico, Finland, Ghana, Singapore, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Australia, and New Zealand. The success of this program led to Lela being an invited expert presenter at the Positive Education Schools Association National conference in Sydney, 2017.

Trained by Professor Lea Waters as a Visible Wellbeing™ facilitator, Lela has a special interest in the positive psychology topics of authenticity, creativity and play. She is a gifted facilitator and brings the science of positive psychology to life in her Visible Wellbeing™ workshops.

CANCELLATION POLICY

Registration and accommodation cancellations must be in writing to the conference organiser. Conference Registration cancellations received up to 30 days prior to the conference receive a full refund of the registration cost less $50.00 handling fee.

Conference registration cancellations received between 29 and 14 days prior to the conference will receive a 50% refund of the registration cost. No refund will be given for cancellations received within 14 days of the conference and full payment will be required. Name substitutions will be allowed, provided the delegate works for the same school.

Accommodation cancellations will be subject to a minimum fee of one night’s accommodation. Cancellations received within 30 days of arrival will require payment in full.
