TOMORROW’S LEADERS – HIGHSCHOOL ACTIVITYPARTICIPANTS

Incredible attention is being paid to highschool athletics and activities today; highschool activity participants are looked uponas leaders because of their position on theteam or club. Their impact on the climateand culture of their schools and other stu-dents is enormous. In fact, studies show thatmore than one-half of high school studentsparticipate in some sort of school activity orathletic program. Their involvement in thesuccess of a high school is paramount andcritical. The National Federation of State HighSchool Associations (NFHS), which servesmore than 11 million students nationwideeach year, wants to be the leader in trainingtalented, committed young people tobecome better citizens and who will be positive, contributing adults. We are pleasedto announce that the NFHS is hosting thefourth annual National Student LeadershipConference, with the theme “Take Part. GetSet For Life.”

The 2008 NFHS National Student LeadershipConference is a four-day leadership confer-ence for 300 student and adult leaders fromacross the United States who participate ininterscholastic athletics and fine arts activityprograms through their state high schoolathletic/activities associations. The conferencewill be held July 17-20, at the downtownHilton in Indianapolis, Indiana, national headquarters of the NFHS.

The NSLC will include large- and small-groupdiscussion about contemporary issues thatimpact a young person being a leader androle model. In addition to group discussion,there will be guest speakers sharing their sto-ries of overcoming challenges, perseveranceand celebrating their talents. Field trips areplanned to local areas of interest to partici-pate in a city-wide community service proj-ect. The curriculum for the conference focus-es on Respect, Positive Values, Perspective,Sportsmanship, Teamwork, Healthy Lifestyles,Community Service and Self-Evaluation.These components will be presented insmall-group sessions led by outstanding adultand college facilitators specifically chosen for

their involvement in athletics in high schoolsand colleges. In addition, delegates will beable to choose speakers during a special personal development track on one day ofthe conference. Some of these topicsinclude:NCAA Eligibility/NationalClearinghouse, Money Management,Successful Tips for the ACT/SAT StandardizedTests, Hazing Education and Learning Newand Exciting Ways To Use Technology ToHost Virtual Team Play By Using the Internet,just to name a few of the elective sessions.

These facilitators will be with the studentdelegates throughout the conference asmentors and role models. They will beresponsible for delivering the curriculum,leading the discussions that affect education-based athletics and activities and will beinvolved in every aspect of the conference.

The registration fee for each student is $350,which includes conference gifts, all mealsand all transportation while in Indianapolis.The Hilton Indianapolis hotel costs will be$61 per night (taxes and fees included) perstudent (triple occupancy), and each studentdelegate will need to provide his or her owntransportation to and from Indianapolis.However, all conference registration, trans-portation to and from Indianapolis, and hotelcosts for the designated number of studentdelegates is free through a generous grantfrom T-Mobile USA, Inc.

The NFHS will also invite 75-100 adult dele-gates who will serve as advisors and coachesas they oversee the student delegates fromtheir respective states. These adults will alsotake an active part in the discussion and cur-riculum of the NSLC. The NFHS will also haveadult staff volunteers to help the studentswith any questions or concerns they mighthave. The conference will also be fullystaffed with a top sports medicine team onsite and within minutes of several local hos-pitals.

OPENING AND CLOSING GENERALSESSION SPEAKERS

Harvey H. Alston

A remarkable communicator and one of themost in-demand speakers, Harvey H. Alston’scareer has spanned diverse positions – fromhead football coach of Columbus East HighSchool in Ohio to assistant director of stu-dent financial aid at the university level. Asan educator, he’s taught English, biology,health, life sciences and math curricula. Inaddition, he has been instrumental in thepromotion of body-building and in the direc-tion of physical education programming.Harvey also served in business managementand in supervisory positions in the food andrestaurant industry. As supervisor, he wasable to help alter the attitudes of employees.With his No. 1 record in this business, it giveshim insight to the many aspects of positivecustomer service. He has spoken to millionsof people who have benefited not only fromhis knowledge, but from his wisdom. He’sauthored four books, including Be The Bestand Black Males. Over the years, Harvey hasreceived numerous awards and nationalrecognition. He is a member of the NationalSpeakers Association and the Ohio SpeakersForum, and serves as advisor to many civicboards, panels and commissions.

Harvey has taken his personal, proven mes-sage – “Be the Best” – to literally millions ofpeople. His unforgettable words of individualresponsibility for achievement have improvedspirits, spurred growth, changed lives.Harvey’s powerful, soul-searching presenta-tion uplifts people to a higher standard – toa level where people strive only for the BEST.

Stephen Bargatze

THE MAGIC OF STEPHENStephen Bargatze has been a professionalmagician for more than 25 years. He hasperformed in a variety of different venues,including trade shows, comedy clubs, ban-quets and corporate functions. In addition,Bargatze has also been asked to perform andlecture to magicians around the world. Thiscan only attest to his skill as a sleight-of-hand artist, but also as a performer.Performing for one’s peers is one of thegreatest honors obtainable in the field ofmagic.

Living in Music City, Nashville, Tennessee,Bargatze has worked with or for several ofthe top stars in country music, including BillCosby, Garth Brooks, Barbara Mandrel, RayStevens and several more.

His magical accolades include:• Three-time World of Wizards champion• South Eastern Association Magician of

As director of the Student Services Programfor the Tennessee Secondary School AthleticAssociation, Bargatze gets the opportunity tospeak to more than 45,000 students eachschool year. In addition to speaking to highschool and middle school students, he alsospeaks on several college campuses. Whilemaking these appearances Bargatze uses hismagic to show today’s youth how drugs,alcohol and tobacco can affect their life.Bargatze also demonstrates the dangers ofstereotypes and the importance of respectingyourself and respecting the differences inothers to promote positive citizens at home,in school and in the community. His “Magicwith a Message” presentations are not onlyenlightening to students but also inspira-tional.

ABOUT THE NFHS. . .

The NFHS stands for the National Federationof State High School Associations. It writesplaying rules for 17 high school sports, andcoordinates the national high school debatetopic. Since 1920, the NFHS has led thedevelopment of education-based inter-scholastic sports and activities that help stu-dents succeed in their lives. We set directionsfor the future by building awareness andsupport, improving the participation experi-ence, establishing consistent standards andrules for competition, and helping those whooversee high school sports and activities.Through the work of its member state highschool associations, the NFHS is responsiblefor more than 10 million students participat-ing in sports, spirit programs and fine arts.The young people who are selected are aprivileged group of individuals, because theyrepresent their states in Indianapolis in July,2008.

Q: WHO ARE FINE ARTSPARTICIPANTS?

Those talented individuals involved in speech,debate, music, theatre and band. There areapproximately four million students who arepart of their school’s fine arts programs andmore than 7 million who are involved in ath-letics.

Q: WHY IS THE NFHS HOSTING THE NSLC?

This is the only national student leadershipconference for athletes and fine arts partici-pants. Q: WHAT IS THE CONFERENCEATMOSPHERE AND ATTIRE?

This is a relaxed atmosphere to encouragelearning and facilitate interaction. The mid-80 degree weather dictates casual clothes-jeans, shorts, skirts, sneakers, t-shirts wouldbe appropriate for the majority of the confer-ence functions. There are two occasions thatyour attire needs to be aligned with theevent. The first event is a city-wide communi-ty service project at various local parks. Bringclothes that you will not mind getting verydirty. However, we will provide you with acommunity service t-shirt. The other event isa celebration dance on Saturday eveningbefore you depart for home. This is not ablack-tie affair, but we recommend you wearcasual clothes that you can dance in. As partof your registration, we will provide you withtwo t-shirts (one conference and one com-munity service) and one golf-style, collaredshirt for our Friday night off-property event.

Our corporate partner, T-Mobile USA, will besponsoring the T-Mobile Lounge in theHilton Indianapolis for delegates to relaxafter the day’s activities and congregate tochat, watch some videos and munch on pop-corn.

INDIANAPOLIS The 12th largest city in the nation and thecapital of Indiana, the Circle City is the center of America’s heartland. More than 65percent of the U.S. population lives within a700-mile radius of Indianapolis. More inter-states converge in Indianapolis than in anyother city in the United States, which makesit one of America’s most accessible cities.

The Arts play an important part in the livesof the people of Central Indiana and enrichthe culture of the community. Indianapolissupports more than 200 arts organizations,including a world-class symphony, theater,opera, ballet, museums and art galleries.

Indianapolis offers a wide range of restau-rants catering to tastes from traditionalIndiana fare to gourmet vegetarian or inter-national dishes. Nightlife offers somethingfor everyone, including comedy clubs, danc-ing and dinner theaters.

Indianapolis offers something for alltypes of sports fans: the annual N.H.R.A.Nationals, RCA Tennis Championships,Indianapolis 500 Mile Race, Brickyard 400,the NFL Indianapolis Colts, the NBA IndianaPacers, the WNBA Indiana Fever, theIndianapolis Indians baseball team and theIndianapolis ICE hockey team. The city is alsoknown for its support of high school sportsand activities.

The downtown White River State Parkincludes the new 78-acre Indianapolis Zoofeaturing over 2,500 exotic and domesticanimals exhibited in “cageless” simulatednatural habitats of the world’s waters,deserts, plains and forests. The Zoo includesIndiana’s largest aquarium and the nation’sonly totally enclosed environmentally con-trolled whale and dolphin performance cen-ter. The White River Botanical Gardens areadjacent to the zoo located across the WhiteRiver from NFHS offices.

The Hilton Indianapolis is a jewel in thedowntown lodging crown. It is near the RCADome (home of the World Champion NFLColts) and Indiana Convention Center andfour blocks from the Conseco Fieldhouse,home of the NBA Pacers and WNBA Fever.The Hilton Indianapolis is steps away fromdowntown Indianapolis restaurants and the-atres. The hotel is two blocks from CircleCenter Mall which includes Nordstrom’s,Eddie Bauer, Parisian and a variety of specialty stores.

Horse-drawn carriage tours of the sights inthe downtown area are available days andevenings.

RELEASE AND WAIVER OF LIABILITYAND INDEMNITYAGREEMENT (the "Agreement") FOR THE NFHS NationalStudent Leadership Conference, sponsoredby T-Mobile USA July 17-20, 2008 (The "Event")

In consideration for being permitted to observe, work for, or for any purpose participate inany way in the Event, EACH OF THE UNDERSIGNED, for him or herself, his personal represen-tatives, heirs, next of kin, acknowledges, agrees, and represents that he has, or will immedi-ately upon entering the Event:

1. RELEASE, WAIVE, DISCHARGE AND COVENANT NOT TO SUE: T-Mobile, The NationalFederation of State High School Associations (NFHS), any and all sponsors of the Event,their subsidiaries, parents, affiliates, officers, directors, agents and representatives, theEvent promoters, participants, venue operators and owners, city officials, competitors,technicians, any persons in any restricted area, lessees of premises used to conduct theEvent and each of them, all for the purpose herein referred to as "releasees", from all liability to the undersigned, his personal representatives, assigns, heirs, and next of kin forany and all loss or damage, and any claim or demands therefore on account of injury tothe persons or property resulting in death of the undersigned, whether caused by thenegligence of the releasees or otherwise while the undersigned is in or upon any restrict-ed areas, and/or, competing, officiating in, observing, working for, or for any purposeparticipating in the Event.

2. AGREE TO INDEMNIFY AND SAVE AND HOLD HARMLESS the releasees and each of themfrom any loss, liability, damage, or cost they may incur due to the presence of the under-signed in or upon the restricted areas or in any way competing, officiating, observing, orworking for, or for a any purpose participating in the Event and whether caused by thenegligence of the releasees or otherwise.

3. ASSUME FULL RESPONSIBILITY FOR ANY RISK OF BODILY INJURY, DEATH OR PROPERTYDAMAGE due to the negligence of releasees or otherwise while in or upon restrictedareas and/or while participating, observing, working for, or for any purpose participatingin the Event. EACH OF THE UNDERSIGNED EXPRESSLY ACKNOWLEDGES AND AGREESTHAT THE ACTIVITIES OF THE Event are dangerous and involve the risk of serious injuryand/or property damage. EACH OF THE UNDERSIGNED further expressly agrees that theforegoing release, waiver, and indemnity agreement portion thereof is intended to be asbroad and inclusive as is permitted and that if any portion thereof is held invalid, it isagreed that the balance shall, notwithstanding, continue in full legal force and effect.

THE UNDERSIGNED hereby grants permission to T-Mobile and the NFHS, severally, full permission now and forever, with no obligation to compensate me further, to use photo-graphs, videotapes, motion pictures, recordings, or other record of my participation foradvertising and promotional materials and for any other purpose T-Mobile or the NFHS, inits sole discretion deems necessary. This includes the posting of such photographs, record-ings, or other media representation of myself, on any website, or licensing others to do soin their promotional materials or websites.

NOTICE: BY SIGNING THIS RELEASE AND WAIVER OF LIABILITY AND INDEMNITYAGREEMENT, RELEASEOR IS AGREEING TO HAVE ANY CLAIM DECIDED BY NEUTRALARBITRATION AND IS GIVING UP THE RIGHT TO A JURY OR COURT TRIAL. ELECTIVE SPEAKERSELECTIONWe are very fortunate to be able to offeradditional speakers beside our curriculumand opening and closing general sessionspeakers for your leadership and knowledgedevelopment. Elective 1: What the NCAA Clearinghousemeans to you, a Parent’s Perspective – Learnhow to pull together members of your win-ning team that will assist you in achievingthe NCAA Clearinghouse certification to beeligible to participate in college sports in yourschool. You can also use the certification aspart of your employment resume, becausethe voluntary contributions of the mind andbody by high school student-athletes areassets to the education system. Discover whois available and how they can help youachieve the NCAA Clearinghouse certifica-tion today!

Elective 2: Hazing – This topic finds itself inthe news and in the courtroom. Learn waysto protect yourself, classmates and schoolfrom hazing. Develop other methods to cre-ate a bond and other positive team-buildingexercises.

Elective 3: Money Matters – Learn how tosave and spend on a high school studentbudget. Understand the strategy of goodcredit and the pitfalls of bad credit. Realizingthat being able to budget is a good lessonthat stays with you for life.

Elective 4: Virtual Team Play – The next gen-eration of meeting other people on the Webhas arrived! Learn how to take MySpace toanother level. Find out what WIKIs are andwhy you will enjoy them. Second Life andMicrosoft Office Live allows you to meet vir-tually, learn from each other, and shareexperiences. The value of team play is thesynergy of working together; imagine collab-orating on projects where miles don't mat-ter! Come to this session to learn new waysto team up, virtually.

Elective 5: “Stick Together” – How you andT-Mobile can improve your school and com-munity. Learn how corporations are focusingmore attention on programs that serve thecommunity interest. Student participation incorporate responsibility programs can lead tomore effective programs with greater impactat the local level. Learn about programs thatcan make a difference for your school andcommunity with global reach from a corpo-rate partner. Participating now leads to abetter world tomorrow.

Elective 6: Help University – Learn how tomotivate high school students to realize theirgoals in pursuit of their athletic and academ-ic dreams. By utilizing professional skill devel-opment and character building techniques tomaximize your potential, this process helpsstudents acquire the necessary skills for theiracademic and professional careers.

Elective 7: College Eligibility/NCAAClearinghouse – Get advice straight from thesource on how to be eligible and receive rec-ommendations on what one needs to donow in preparation for playing college athlet-ics.

Elective 8: SAT/ACT /PSAT Prep Tips –Princeton Review is the nationally renownedstandardized test preparation firm. Find outwhat they recommend on how to best pre-pare for college admission testing.

Elective 9: Stay In Bounds – Uses Cross-Agementoring as a powerful bridge to talk can-didly with elementary and middle school chil-dren about fundamental values. Learn howhigh school students share their experiencesregarding respect, integrity, caring, harmony,excellence and responsibility.
