Vision vs. Goals

The difference between planning with vision and planning with goals - only the former really

makes people’s eyes shine. – Benjamin Zander

Questions to ponder – Who am I being when the eyes of my students

are shining? How can I access that part of myself more often? What seeds will I plant this year?

Page 8: Kps Teacher Orientation 2009

What is 21st century learning?

Try to define 21st century learning in less than 25 words! Hint – make a graphic organizer!

How does this compare to 21st century teaching?

Let’s watch some video clips:

What is the next generation learning?

A Brave New World Wide Web

Page 9: Kps Teacher Orientation 2009

20th Century 21st century

Time-based Focus:  memorization of discrete

facts Lessons focus on the lower level

of Bloom’s– passive learning Textbook-driven Passive learning Learners work in isolation –

classroom within 4 walls Teacher-centered:  teacher is

center of attention and provider of information

Little to no student freedom Fragmented curriculum

Outcome-based Focus:  what students Know, Can

Do and Are Like after all the details are forgotten.

Learning is designed on upper levels of Blooms’ - Active Learning

Learners work collaboratively with classmates and others around the world – the Global Classroom

Student-centered:  teacher is facilitator/coach

Great deal of student freedom Integrated and Interdisciplinary

curriculum

I KNOW ONLY ONE THING ABOUT THE TECHNOLOGY THAT AWAITS US IN THE

FUTURE: WE WILL FIND WAYS TO TELL STORIES WITH IT.

– JASON OHLER

KPS ORIENTATION, SESSION 3

Digital Storytelling Part 1

Page 16: Kps Teacher Orientation 2009

FIND A PARTNERTELL THEM ABOUT A TIME THAT YOU

ACQUIRED A BRUISE, SCAR OR BROKEN LIMB

LISTEN TO THEIR STORY

Bruised Brag

Page 17: Kps Teacher Orientation 2009

WHY STORY? WHY NOW?

According to Andreas Weigend, former Chief Scientist at Amazon, in 2009, more data will be generated by individuals than in the entire history of mankind through 2008. Information overload is more serious than ever.

Story is an ancient form of transmitting cultural wisdom.Story is how we make sense of the world and remember

things. We need story to help us filter through and make sense of

the growing mass of content we are exposed to every day.We need story to help us connect with one another across

time and space.

RECOMMENDATIONS FROM 2007 AND UPDATE ALL THE CHAPTERS TO INCLUDE

ANY SIGNIFICANT CHANGES…THIS IS A GREAT TIME TO GO BACK TO OUR MISSION, VALUES AND GOALS AND
