Pay information• Occasional teachers will be paid every two weeks on a schedule

determined by the board, based on Collective Agreement Article 17

• Your daily supply rate is inclusive of statutory holiday pay, vacation pay and any other statutory or other required payment

Pay information: long-term occasional (LTO)category ratings and changesArticle 15 - Salary• IMPORTANT: Send in your QECO statement to your appropriate Human Resources

representative (Article 15.2(c)). We encourage submitting your QECO statement as soon as possible

• Change in category rating (Article 15.2(d)). All requests for a salary adjustment, as a result of a category change, will be made through an online application on the StaffWeb (Intent to Change Salary Category application form)

Note: Federation membership is required before applying for a QECO Statement. A copy of your OSSTF membership receipt or of a recent pay stub must be attached to your QECO application form, available at www.qeco.on.ca. If further information is needed, please contact the local OSSTF office or secondary school federation representatives at www.osstf.on.ca.

Teaching experience – Article 15.3• Applicable teaching experience earned to Sept. 1 of the current school year

• Part-time or full-time elementary or secondary teaching experience in Canada

• Part-time or full-time elementary or secondary teaching experience gained outside Canada may be accepted

• Effective Sept. 1, 2015, continuing education teaching experience with any Ontario school board will be recognized on a 1:1 basis

– You are required to pay into the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan (OTPP)

• Benefits– You must be in an LTO position for at least 90 calendar days before

Know your collective agreement• Collective agreements are available under Human Resource Services

department on the StaffWeb• It is advised that you become familiar with your collective agreement

and with the language, terms and conditions of employment, as it is a legally binding document of your employment. There is important information regarding your employment in your collective agreement that you will need to be aware of

Occasional teacher probation• Per Article 6 - Probationary Period, of the Occasional Teachers’

Collective Agreement, new occasional teachers are required to serve a probationary period of 60 assignments in the secondary panel. An LTO assignment would count towards these days

• The 60 assignments of probation are for the first 60 assignments you have taught in a classroom, not the first 60 days you are an employee

Occasional teacher probation• The probationary period will be considered complete once all 60

lines of the probationary report have been completed. Fill in each line of the report for every assignment that you work, up to the sixtieth line

• The probationary report can be found on the StaffWeb by following the path Explore > Human Resources > Employee Info > OSSTF Occasional > Form A4210 – Occasional Teacher Probationary Report

Supply list requirements• Secondary panel - minimum requirements to keep your position on the supply list

include working:– 10 assignments in Semester 1– 14 assignments in Semester 2– A half-day assignment is considered one assignment. If you are added to the

supply list part way through the school year, required assignments are prorated• An occasional teacher on the supply list is required to accept the first assignment

that is more than 0.50 FTE for which they are qualified (Article12.3 (b) (i))• An occasional teacher on the supply list is required to select four schools for which

they will accept assignments (Article 12.3 (b) (ii))• Information on taking a leave of absence from the supply list is available in Article

12.03 (d). You are able to take a leave from the supply list if you feel you will be unable to complete your required number of assignments, to a maximum of two leaves during your occasional employment

Occasional Teacher Supplemental Supply List (SSL)• The Occasional Teacher Supplemental Supply List (SSL) will be

staffed up to a maximum of 150. If experience indicates that this maximum does not produce the expected result of eliminating the problem of unfilled jobs, the board, in consultation with the union, may increase this maximum up to 200

• Assignments will first be available to members on the Main Supply List (MSL) followed by members on the SSL. Members on the SSL will follow the expectations set out in Article 12 – Occasional Teachers’ List

• Retired teachers will be added to the SSL without an interview based on the recommendation of their principal

• Arrive at least 15 minutes prior to your scheduled start time. This may depend on what time you receive the call from EasyConnect.

• Call the school if you are running late or if you need to cancel the job.• Go to the office, sign in and receive direction as to where you will need to go.

Make certain to obtain the school’s Occasional Teacher’s Handbook.• You will be required to wear your SCDSB photo ID at each SCDSB location.• Deliver the lesson plan as written by the classroom teacher, and follow the rules

and protocol of the school• Practice good classroom management and note that SCDSB has a hands-off

policy• No use of social media – see APM A1350 Information and Computing Technology

and Internet Appropriate Use Guidelines for Employees• Remain at the school until the end of the assignment• If you have any questions, ask

Occasional Teacher Handbook - school safety plans • As per Memorandum 2018-2019: 106, school safety plan binders are

located in the school office. It is mandatory that you access them, read them and, where a confirmation signature is required, sign off daily that you have read them

• APM 4210 Occasional Teachers - In order to ensure that each occasional teacher has sufficient information to teach effectively and to provide a safe environment for students, each school will have in place an Occasional Teacher Handbook. This handbook is to be reviewed by an occasional teacher when on assignment at that school. Most of the information to be included in the handbook is generic to the school; however, certain items will be specific to the respective classroom/assignment. The handbook may be retained in the school office for distribution to the occasional teacher on the day of the assignment and returned at the conclusion of the assignment, or a copy may be placed permanently in each classroom

Be a successful occasional teacher• Principals are looking for a teacher that fits in with the school culture

and get an immediate sense that students are engaged and learning• Individuals who have a lifelong passion for working with children and

adolescents, can contribute to extra-curricular programs, are personable, up-to-date on current technology and adaptable to online learning environments are sought after

• The role of a teacher requires working with a range of students from diverse backgrounds and walks of life. Their lived experiences and personal values may be very different than your own. It is important to intentionally embed diverse representation and opportunities for multiple perspectives in your instructional practice to foster a sense of inclusion, belonging and equity on a daily basis

Occasional teacher performance evaluation• Information regarding performance evaluations for occasional teachers can

be found on the StaffWeb (APM 4220 – Occasional Teacher Performance Appraisal)

• An OT may be evaluated using the Occasional Teacher Performance Evaluation (FORM A4220 - 1) at any time. The evaluation may be at the request of a principal, supervisory officer, Manager of HRS or the OT

• The OT will be provided with five days notice. If the OT requests the evaluation, it may be done at any time. The principal or designated administrator has the sole discretion to conduct a performance evaluation in this circumstance

• Following the observation, the principal or designated administrator will arrange to provide a post-observation to the OT related to the performance expectations listed in the evaluation form within twenty days of the observation

LTO teacher evaluation• Information on LTO teacher evaluations can be found on the

StaffWeb (APM 4221 – Long Term Occasional Teacher Evaluation)• OTs are to be evaluated in their first long-term occasional

assignment of four consecutive months or more• An LTO Teacher Evaluation (FORM A4221 - 1) will be completed by

the principal to document the outcome of the evaluation. It may also be used by OTs to reflect on the feedback they received and to identify opportunities for growth

• Following the observation, the principal and the OT will meet to debrief the observation, discuss the outcome of the evaluation and provide recommendations for professional growth

email on the ATE website. You should apply to any LTO or external contract positions that you are qualified for and are interested in

• Ensure your ATE profile is up-to-date with current contact information, including references, and is reflective of your experience and qualifications, includingyour OCT registration number

Apply to Education: EasyConnect• As an occasional teacher, ensure you set your availability and select the

locations you are willing to work at in your EasyConnect preferences (Article 12.4). You are required to select a minimum of four schools for which you will accept assignments (Article 12.3 (b) (ii))

• You are required to make yourself unavailable in EasyConnect once you are in an LTO position so you do not receive supply calls

• Visit the ATE/EasyConnect page on the StaffWeb for more information about EasyConnect and the benefits of using the EasyConnect Job Board

Miscellaneous - employee ID badge/fob

• New hires will be required to submit a photo of their head and shoulders on a neutral background from their SCDSB-provided email to [email protected] with line: Employee ID, Last Name, First Name

• The fob department will email new hires when their fob is ready for pick up with instructions on where to pick it up

• Once new hires obtain their fob, they should visit the StaffWeb to activate it

• If a fob is lost/stolen fobs it should be reported at https://scdsb.sharepoint.com/sites/StaffApps/SitePages/My-Security-Fob-Badge-Info.aspx

Miscellaneous - SCDSB email• Article 18.9 - Occasional teachers are provided with a board email address and

are expected to monitor this account weekly to support their work within the Simcoe County District School Board (e.g. annual offence declarations and mandatory trainings)

• The IT Department will not notify you of your email address. Your SCDSB email address will either be your first initial, last name (e.g. Joe Michael Brown [email protected]) or, if that email address is not available, first initial, middle initial and last name (e.g. – [email protected])

• To log on to the StaffWeb as a new employee:Username: board-provided email address in fullPassword: Your five-digit Employee ID# and four-digit year of birth, no spacing

• Remember to update your (ATE) Easy Connect account, the Ontario College of Teachers and the Teachers Pension Plan with new name/address information

Miscellaneous - inclement weather• Article 14.2 (a) - All daily occasional teacher assignments, excluding Simcoe

Shores SS, will be cancelled in the zones where buses are cancelled due to inclement weather

• If an assignment is cancelled in the absence replacement system a minimum of 75 minutes before the start time, the occasional teacher will not be paid for the assignment. In the event the assignment has not been cancelled in the absence replacement system with a minimum of 75 minutes before the start time and upon reporting to the school, the occasional teacher will be provided with an assignment

Miscellaneous - Ontario College of TeachersAs a certified teacher, it is your responsibility to maintain a status ofGood Standing with the Ontario College of Teachers. You are required to pay your individual dues.

• A teacher whose membership in the Ontario College of Teachers is not in good standing will be terminated and their name will be removed from the list. Should the teacher’s membership in the College be renewed within 10 days, the teacher will be returned to the list at the earliest opportunity (Article 10.4 of the secondary collective agreement, Article 11.09 of the elementary collective agreement – will be suspended)

• Long-term occasional teachers who are being paid in January will have the annual fee automatically deducted from their pay in January and February

Smoke free learning and working environmentsSmoke free learning and working environments• It is the policy of the SCDSB to prohibit smoking and the use of

tobacco products, emerging tobacco industry products, tobacco-related products (e.g. e-cigarettes and vapourizers) and any smoking paraphernalia. This applies to all school board employees

• If required, at board locations there are designated smoking areas which are off board property. If you need to smoke, please check for a designated area
