Pay Information – Long-Term Occasional grid placement• You are required to make yourself unavailable in EasyConnect

once you are in an LTO position so you don’t receive supply calls• Group (category) ratings are to be submitted to Human Resource

Services (HRS) prior/during LTO assignments, but before June 30 of the current school year

• Letter of previous teaching experience from previous school boards must be submitted to HRS before the deadline of June 30 to count for the current year

• Grid placement is based on past experience, if applicable, as well as the number of days that have been taught while on the supply list or LTO, not how long you have been on the supply list

Change Category form (Article 13)• The form can be found on the new staff website under

Explore/Human Resources/Employee Info/OSSTF Occasional and Intent to Change Category.

• For courses having been completed before Aug. 31, the Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) must be notified of such with the online Intent to Change Salary Category Form. Teachers are asked to complete online and click ‘submit’ (transmitted electronically to HRS) by November 30.

Pay information – LTO grid placement

• For courses being completed after Sept. 1, the online Intent Form should be submitted at the time the teacher registers for the qualifying upgrade course

• The Intent Form will be kept on file to be attached to the upgraded QECO Statement when this document is submitted to HRS (before June 30)

Seniority• Seniority numbers are assigned to new occasional teachers and are

used only for the LTO list• The LTO Seniority List is posted on the staff website and is updated

after every LTO list hiring process

Occasional teacher probation• Article 6 of the Occasional Teachers Collective Agreement

(Probationary Period) explains this process• New occasional teachers employed by the board are required to serve

a probationary period of 60 assignments in both the elementary and secondary panels. An LTO assignment would count towards these days. Print off the form that is located near the end of this orientation portfolio

Know your collective agreement• Collective agreements are available under HRS department on the staff

website• It is advised that you become familiar with your collective agreement

and with the language, terms and conditions of employment, as it is a legally binding document of your employment. There is important information regarding your employment in your collective agreement that you will need to be aware of

Know your collective agreement• Secondary Panel: Minimum requirements to keep your position on the

supply list is 10 assignments per semester. A half-day assignment is considered one assignment. If you are added to the supply list part way through the school year, your required assignments are prorated

• Includes information on what to do on a snow day (buses cancelled) or in the case of personal illness

• Declining jobs/penalty (secondary only)• Learn about taking a leave of absence from the supply list. You are

able to take a leave from the supply list if you feel you will be unable to complete your required number of assignments to a maximum of two leaves

Regulation 274• LTO list: You must have taught as an occasional teacher (supply

teacher) in one or more SCDSB schools (panel specific) for at least 20 full days during a 10-month instructional period

• LTO position interviewing and hiring is based on board seniority and the top five most senior qualified applicants will be interviewed

• Contract: You must complete at least four consecutive months in an LTO position and not received an unsatisfactory evaluation in order to apply to external contract positions

Performance evaluation – occasional teachers• Information regarding performance evaluations for occasional teachers

can be found in APM 4220 – Occasional Teacher Performance Appraisal, on the staff website

• An OT may be evaluated using the Occasional Teacher Performance Evaluation (FORM A4220 - 1) at any time. The evaluation may be at the request of a principal, supervisory officer, Manager of HRS or the OT

• The OT will be provided with five days notice. If the OT requests the evaluation, it may be done at any time. The principal, or designated administrator, has the sole discretion to conduct a performance evaluation in this circumstance.

• Following the observation the principal, or designated administrator, will arrange to provide a post observation to the OT related to the performance expectations listed in the evaluation form within twenty days of the OT’s observation.

LTO teacher evaluation• Information on LTO teacher evaluations can be found in APM 4221

– Long Term Occasional Teacher Evaluation, on the staff website• OTs are to be evaluated in their first long term occasional

assignment of four consecutive months or more• An LTO Teacher Evaluation (FORM A4221 - 1) will be completed by

the principal to document the outcome of the evaluation. It may alsobe used by OTs to reflect on the feedback they received and toidentify opportunities for growth

• Following the observation, the principal and the OT will meet todebrief the observation, discuss the outcome of the evaluation andprovide recommendations for professional growth

Job postings• You should apply to any LTO or external contract positions that you

are qualified for and are interested in through Apply to Education.You do not have to be on the LTO list to apply to these positions

• If you get an LTO position, this does not get you onto the LTO list.You will still have to apply to the LTO list posting once you meet thecriteria

Miscellaneous - Ontario College of TeachersAs a certified teacher, it is your responsibility to maintain a status of Good Standing with the Ontario College of Teachers. You are required to pay your individual dues.

• A teacher whose membership in the Ontario College of Teachers is not in good standing will be terminated and their name will be removed from the list. Should the teacher’s membership in the College be renewed within twenty days, the teacher will be returned to the list at the earliest opportunity (Article 10.04 of the Secondary Collective Agreement. Article 11.09 of the Elementary Collective Agreement. – Will be suspended)

• Long term occasional teachers who are being paid in January will have the annual fee automatically deducted from their pay in January and February by Payroll

It is mandatory that you access them, read them and, where a confirmation signature is required, sign off daily that you have read them

• Call the school if you are running late or if you need to cancel the job• Go to the office, sign in and receive direction as to where you will

need to go. Make certain to obtain the school’s Occasional Teacher’s Handbook

• Someone teaching successfully in their school, seeing that they fit in with students, staff and school culture - that’s the person they want to hire

• To walk into a classroom and get an immediate sense that students are engaged, that learning is taking place and that students are being taught by someone who is personable and current

• Individuals who have a lifelong passion for working with children and adolescents

• People who have volunteered at youth organizations and community centres, or have coached or tutored
