THE MATCH-UP Kansas City travels to Oakland for a key AFC West matchup on Sunday in the 97th renewal of a rivalry that dates back to the American Football League’s inaugural season in ’60. After an 0-2 start, the Chiefs have rebounded to win three of their last four contests, securing a spot atop the AFC West standings with San Diego at 3-3. The Raiders are also in the midst of the division chase at 2-3 and enter this week’s contest after a 28-14 loss at San Diego (10/14). Kansas City is coming off a 27-20 home win vs. Cincinnati (10/14) and will be seeking to secure back-to-back victories for the second time this season. The Chiefs will also be attempting to win their ninth straight contest against the Raiders, which would mark Oakland’s longest losing streak vs. any single opponent. Oakland has dropped its last eight meetings against both Kansas City and San Diego. The Chiefs will also be striving to win five straight road games against the Raiders for the first time. Although the Chiefs have won eight straight outings vs. Oakland, seven of those eight games have been decided by six points or less, with KC winning by an average margin of just 5.4 points per game. During Kansas City’s eight-game victory stretch against the Raiders, the Chiefs have permitted just 19.0 ppg. Kansas City won the most recent meeting between the two squads by a 20-9 margin at Oakland (12/23/06). Kansas City’s resurgent defense has held every opponent to 20 points or less in 2007, joining Jacksonville as the only other squad to own that distinction this season. The Chiefs are also tied with Philadelphia for the league lead with 19.0 sacks, putting KC on pace to finish the year with 50.0. Chiefs head coach Herm Edwards owns a 5-1 career regular season record vs. the Raiders. Sunday’s contest will mark Edwards’ initial meeting with Raiders head coach Lane Kiffin. However, Kiffin’s pedigree is familiar to Edwards, who worked with Kiffin’s father, Monte, in Tampa Bay. The elder Kiffin served as the Bucs defensive coordinator while Edwards was TB’s assistant head coach/secondary coach under Tony Dungy from ’96-00. The Chiefs enjoy a bye week next Sunday (10/28) before resuming their schedule with a home date vs. Green Bay (11/4). Next week the Raiders travel to Tennessee (10/28). THE SERIES Kansas City owns a 51-43-2 advantage over Oakland in regular and postseason play. The Chiefs have also beaten Denver 51 times, tying for the most victories the Chiefs have accumulated against any opponent. The Chiefs own a seven-game edge in the all-time regular season series between the two squads at 49-42-2 dating to the AFL’s inaugural season of ’60. The Chiefs are 2-1 against the Silver and Black in postseason play. The Chiefs are 27-8 (.771) overall vs. the Raiders dating back to ’90, including a ’91 AFC playoff tilt. The Chiefs own an eight-game winning streak against the Raiders, the longest victory stretch by either squad in the 48-year history of this series. KC’s eight-game winning streak against the Raiders ties as the second-longest mark by the Chiefs against any one opponent. KC enjoyed separate eight-game (’60-63) and 11-game (’64-69) winning streaks against Denver in American Football League play. Kansas City has registered an 8-4 (.667) regular season record at Oakland since ’95, including a streak of four straight wins. KC claimed a 20-9 victory in their most recent contest at Oakland (12/23/06). The Chiefs registered a 17-13 victory in the last showdown between these squads at Arrowhead (11/19/06). Kansas City owns a pair of postseason wins against the Raiders, including a 17-7 win in the ’69 AFL Championship Game (1/4/70) that sent the Chiefs to Super Bowl IV. Kansas City also claimed a 10-6 victory in the first postseason contest played at Arrowhead (12/28/91). REMEMBERING OUR FOUNDER The National Football League and the American sports community lost a

true treasure on December 13, 2006 when Chiefs Founder Lamar Hunt passed away. Hunt served as the guiding force behind the formation of both the American Football League and the Kansas City Chiefs franchise. Few individuals helped change the face of America’s favorite game for the better than this quiet Texan. Hunt played a key role in the AFL-NFL merger talks in the ‘60s and actually coined the term “Super Bowl.”

As part of a year-long tribute to Hunt in 2007, the Chiefs will wear a commemorative patch that prominently features the American Football League logo to serve as a reminder of Hunt’s formation of the AFL and the lasting impact the American Football League has made on the game of professional football. True to Hunt’s humble styles, the

letters “LH” are subtly displayed on the football of the AFL logo, symbolizing the fact that the Chiefs Founder always put the best interests of the league ahead of his own. The patch will be affixed to the left chest of both KC’s home and away jerseys, meaning this piece of woven symbolism will be worn over the heart of every Chiefs player.

GONZALEZ SETS NFL TD MARK BY TIGHT ENDS Eight-time Pro Bowl TE Tony Gonzalez owns 64 career TD catches, the most by a tight end in NFL history. Gonzalez ranks second in NFL history among tight ends in receptions (759) and receiving yardage (9,150), trailing only Shannon Sharpe (815-10,060). Gonzalez owns 20 career 100-yard receiving games after a nine-catch, 102-yard, two-TD outing vs. Cincinnati (10/14). Those 20 100-yard games are the most in KC history and are third in NFL annals by a TE, trailing only Kellen Winslow (24), and Jackie Smith (22). Gonzalez extended his team-record streak of games with at least one reception to 105 contests vs. Cincinnati (10/14), meaning only Ozzie Newsome (150) has a longer streak by a TE in NFL history. In 19 career games vs. Oakland, Gonzalez owns 90 catches for 1,210 yards with seven TDs, his highest totals against any one franchise. He needs 10 more catches to become just the second tight end in NFL history to record 100 receptions and 1,000 receiving yards against one opponent. Sharpe was the first to do it, posting 112 catches for 1,386 yards against Kansas City during his career.

Herm Edwards was named the 10th head coach in Kansas City history on January 9, 2006. The first coach in franchise history to guide the Chiefs to the playoffs in his initial season, he helped the 2006 Chiefs become just the fifth team since 2000 to overcome an 0-2 start and still make the postseason. Edwards guided the N.Y. Jets to three postseason berths during a five-year stint (2001-05) with that franchise. He originally joined the Chiefs as a recipient of the NFL’s Minority Coaching Fellowship in ’89. He later served as a scout (’90-91, ’95) and also coached defensive backs (’92-94).

Born in Fort Monmouth, NJ on April 27, 1954, Edwards served as Tampa Bay’s assistant head coach/DBs coach under Tony Dungy from ’96-00. Edwards concluded his college career as a DB at San Diego State in ’76 and signed as a rookie free agent with Philadelphia (’77-85). In 135 career starts with the Eagles, he established a franchise record with 38 INTs, and started in Super Bowl XV. Edwards concluded his NFL playing career seeing duty in seven games for the Rams and Falcons in ’86. He then coached DBs at San Jose State (’87-89) prior to his arrival in the NFL ranks with Kansas City in ’90.

LANE KIFFIN NFL Head Coach: 1st Year NFL Coach Overall: 2nd Year NFL Overall: 2-3 (.400) Regular Season: 2-3 (.400) Postseason: 0-0 (.000) Record w/OAK: 2-3 (.400) Record vs. KC: 0-0 (.000) AFC West Exp: 1st Year College: Fresno State (’98)

Lane Kiffin was named the 16th head coach in Raiders history on January 23, 2007. The 32-year old Kiffin is the youngest head coach since the formation of the modern NFL. Prior to joining Oakland, Kiffin served as offensive coordinator and coached both the wide receivers and tight ends at USC (2001-06). Under Kiffin’s tutelage, the 2006 Trojans led the Pac-10 in passing efficiency, produced two 1,000-yard receivers and a 3,000-yard passer. USC won the BCS Championship in 2005. Son of longtime pro and college coach Monte Kiffin, the younger Kiffin began his coaching career at his alma mater, Fresno State, where he worked with the quarterbacks, wide receivers and defensive backs for two seasons (’97-98). He then joined Colorado State and served as offensive line coach in ’99. Kiffin helped the Rams earn a Liberty Bowl berth that season. He served his initial NFL coaching campaign as Jacksonville’s defensive quality control coach in 2000 before joining USC. Born May 9, 1975, the Bloomington, Minnesota native was a quarterback at Fresno State for three seasons (’94-96) where he was coached by current University of California head coach Jeff Tedford.

He owns a 40-46 (.465) career record with Minnesota, Miami and Oakland. Oakland’s receiving corps features WRs Jerry Porter (D2-00) and Ronald Curry (D7-02), as well as rookie TE Zach Miller (D2-07). Veteran T Barry Sims and G Robert Gallery (D1-04) anchor a rebuilt Oakland o-line that includes former Broncos G Cooper Carlisle, former 49ers C Jeremy Newberry and T Cornell Green. Former Falcons FB Justin Griffith rounds out the offensive unit.

Chiefs Seeking to Stretch Victory Streak vs. Oakland to Nine Games by Pete Moris

Chiefs-Raiders Statistical Appetizers The Chiefs are 17-8 (.680) in division play since the start of the 2003

campaign, including a 5-2 mark under Herm Edwards. Oakland owns a 2-23 (.080) record in division play over that same span. The Raiders have lost 16 consecutive games against AFC West foes, the longest active losing streak against division opponents in the league. The Raiders last victory against a division foe was a 25-24 win at Denver (11/28/04). The Raiders have dropped eight straight games to both Kansas City and San Diego, the Raiders longest losing streak against any opponent in their history.

During the Chiefs eight-game winning streak against the Raiders, KC has handed losses to three different Oakland head coaches (Bill Callahan, Norv Turner and Art Shell). Herm Edwards has actually defeated four different Raiders head coaches (Callahan, Turner, Shell and Jon Gruden). Lane Kiffin will make his debut vs. the Chiefs on Sunday. KC has won its last five contests against Raiders head coaches in their initial game against the Chiefs. The last Raiders head coach to win in his first contest vs. the Chiefs was Art Shell, who led the Silver and Black to a 20-14 win over the Chiefs at L.A. (10/15/89).

Chiefs-Raiders Team Rushing Stats The Chiefs racked up 121 team rushing yards vs. Cincinnati (10/14) and

are looking to continue that trend this week. From 2001-06, only Atlanta (148.3) and Denver (143.7) averaged more rushing ypg than Kansas City (136.8). While KC has averaged just 74.8 rushing ypg during the first six contests of the 2007 campaign, the Chiefs have traditionally run the ball well against the Raiders. The Chiefs have outgained Oakland by an average of 37.5 rushing yards per game (139.4 to 101.9) during KC’s eight-game winning streak over the Silver and Black. Dating back to ’90, KC owns a stellar 19-2 (.905) record vs. the Raiders when compiling 30 or more rushing attempts. Oakland is allowing 144.0 rushing ypg to rank 28th in the league and is permitting 5.78 yards per rushing attempt on first down to rank 32nd in the NFL. Oakland gave up a season-high 206 rushing yards at San Diego (10/14).

Offensively, the Raiders have revved up their running game under Lane Kiffin. Oakland is currently third in the NFL in rushing offense, averaging 166.0 ypg after finishing 29th in that category a year ago (94.9 ypg). The Raiders average 34.2 carries per game, trailing only Tennessee (36.4) and Pittsburgh (34.2). After producing just four individual 100-yard backs over the past two seasons, Oakland already has three 100-yard rushing performances in 2007. RB Charlie Garner (29 carries for 135 yards) was the last Oakland player to rush for 100+ yards vs. Kansas City (12/28/02).

Kansas City Seeking to Hit Paydirt on the Ground vs. Oakland The Chiefs have produced two rushing TDs in six of their last eight

contests vs. Oakland. Kansas City would like to replicate that performance against an Oakland squad that has lost 22 consecutive games when allowing an opposing team to produce two or more rushing TDs. Oakland allowed four rushing TDs at San Diego (10/14) after relinquishing just four rushing scores in its first four contests. The Chiefs are 12-2 (.857) when RB Larry Johnson has two or more rushing TDs. Johnson has registered two rushing TDs in three of his last five games against the Raiders.

The Raiders have not scored a rushing TD in their last three meetings with the Chiefs. Dating back to the start of the 2001 campaign, no NFL team owns more rushing TDs than Kansas City (149). The Chiefs scored their first rushing TD of the season last week. Oakland has 81 rushing TDs dating back to 2001, but owns five already this season. Since the start of the 2005 season, only LaDainian Tomlinson (52) owns more ground scores than Larry Johnson (38). Chiefs RB Larry Johnson Continues to Climb the Charts RB Larry Johnson registered his 26th career 100-yard rushing game with a 119-yard performance vs. Cincinnati (10/14), the most 100-yard rushing games by any player in KC history. After averaging 46.7 rushing ypg in his first three games, Johnson has produced a 100-yard contest in two of his last three outings. He currently ranks third in Chiefs history with 4,599 rushing yards, needing 299 more yards to overtake RB Christian Okoye (4,897) for second.

The Raiders are 2-20 (.090) when allowing a 100-yard rusher dating back to 2004. The Chiefs are 20-6 (.769) when RB Larry Johnson boasts a 100-yard game, including a 4-0 mark vs. the Raiders. Johnson has topped the 100-yard barrier in his last three outings vs. Oakland, averaging 132.0 ypg. The 21-Point Barrier is Always Key in Chiefs-Raiders Contests The 21-point plateau is always a key measuring stick in Chiefs-Raiders

contests. After suffering a 36-21 loss on Opening Day at Detroit (9/9), Oakland has allowed just 20.3 ppg in its last four contests. Meanwhile, the Chiefs are allowing just 14.8 offensive ppg this season (excluding two opponent return TDs). In fact, Kansas City and Jacksonville are the only two teams that have held all of their opponents to 20 points or less this season. The Chiefs own an 8-1 record under Herm Edwards when scoring 21 points or more. KC has averaged 28.5 ppg in its last two victories this season.

Dating back to ’90, the Chiefs are 17-1 (.944) when holding the Raiders to 21 points or less. Oakland has been held to 21 points or less in 24 consecutive losses dating back to 2005. After topping the 21-point barrier just once in 2006, Oakland has averaged 30.5 ppg in its two wins this season. The Raiders have allowed an average of 29.0 ppg in their three losses. The Chiefs have outscored Oakland by an average margin of 24.5 to 19.0 during KC’s eight-game winning streak against the Raiders.

Chiefs, Raiders Are Both Strong Second-Half Teams After trailing at halftime in its first five games, KC held a 20-7 lead at the

intermission last week en route to a 27-20 victory vs. Cincinnati (10/14). KC will face an Oakland squad that has lost 16 consecutive games when trailing at halftime. Interestingly, KC has actually trailed at halftime in two of its last three outings with the Raiders. The Chiefs have also bounced back from halftime deficits to post victories vs. Minnesota (9/23) and at San Diego (9/30) in 2007.

The Chiefs own an 8-1 record when holding a halftime lead under Herm Edwards, while the Raiders are 2-0 under Lane Kiffin when owning a lead at the intermission. Both squads have been strong in the second half this season. The Chiefs have scored 60.0% of their points (54 of 90) in the final two quarters this year. Meanwhile, Oakland ranks seventh in the NFL in second-half scoring with 76 points, meaning 65.5% (76 of 116) of the Raiders points have come after halftime. Kansas City has allowed just 33 points in the second half this season, including just 26 points by opposing offenses. The Chiefs held the Raiders scoreless in the second half of a 20-9 win at Oakland (12/23/06) and have pitched two second-half shutouts already this season.

KC Seeks to Control the Turnover Table Once Again vs. Oakland The Chiefs have been even or positive in four straight contests against the

Raiders, producing a +6 (9 takes/3 gives) turnover ratio in those games. KC would like to continue that trend and improve upon its 7-2 record under head coach Herm Edwards with a positive turnover differential. Oakland is 2-0 under Lane Kiffin when even or positive in the turnover column, but owns a 3-28 (.097) record with a negative turnover ratio dating back to 2004.

Oakland committed an NFL-high 46 turnovers in 2006, including an NFL-high 22 fumbles, while only Cleveland (25) threw more INTs than Oakland (24) a year ago. Although only Chicago (16) has fumbled more times than Oakland (15) this season, the Raiders have lost just five of those loose balls. Including seven INTs, Oakland has only turned the ball over 12 times. Those 12 turnovers have resulted in 48 opponent points, or 37.5% (48 of 128) of the total points the Raiders have relinquished all season. Only Baltimore (41.0%) and San Diego (39.5%) have allowed a higher percentage of points off giveways.

The Chiefs and Raiders have both done a solid job of capitalizing on opponents’ miscues this year. KC has scored 40.0% (36 of 90) of its points off turnovers this season, the second-highest percentage in the league behind Detroit (41.0%). Oakland has registered 32.8% (38 of 116) of its scores off giveways, a figure that ranks as the seventh-highest percentage in the league.

Chiefs-Raiders Passing Stats For the first time since 2000, a QB other than Trent Green will start under

center for KC in a Chiefs-Raiders contest when QB Damon Huard lines up for the Chiefs. QB Daunte Culpepper will mark the sixth different signal caller the Raiders have started against KC since the start of the 2001 campaign, joining Rich Gannon (5 starts), Kerry Collins (4 starts), Rick Mirer (1 start), Aaron Brooks (1 start) and Andrew Walter (1 start).

During KC’s eight-game winning streak against the Raiders, Oakland has attempted an average of 36.7 passes per game. Don’t expect to see the Raiders throw the ball as much this week. Oakland has attempted 132 passes (26.4 per game) in 2007, the third-lowest total in the league. The Raiders offense ranks 29th in the NFL, averaging 161.8 passing ypg, while the Chiefs are seventh in pass defense, relinquishing just 194.5 ypg. Opposing passers have compiled just a 72.8 rating vs. KC, the fourth-lowest mark in the NFL. The Raiders have thrown at least one INT in each of their last 10 losses, including their last three setbacks against the Chiefs.

Chiefs Defense, Raiders Offense the NFL’s Best Inside the 30 Opponents have scored TDs a league-low 20.0% of the time when getting

inside the Chiefs 30-yard line (4 TDs on 20 drives), while Oakland’s offense leads the league by scoring TDs 62.5% of the time (10 TDs on 16 drives) when it gets inside the 30 … KC’s defense has allowed 89 offensive points on the season with 22.5% (20 of 89) of those points coming on the opening possessions of games, an average of 3.3 points per possession. KC has allowed just 69 points on its other 65 defensive possessions, an average of 1.1 points per possession … Oakland ranks 32nd in the league in punt return average (2.1) and allows 28.2 yards per kickoff return to rank 29th in the NFL.

LAST GAME

CChiefs 2hiefs 27, Bengals 207, Bengals 20October 14, 2007 • Arrowhead Stadium • 76,846

The Chiefs pulled back to 3-3 on the season thanks to a well-balanced 27-20 win over the Cincinnati Bengals at Arrowhead Stadium. Kansas City forced three turnovers and held the Bengals offense to just one-of-11 on third down, while the offense helped TE Tony Gonzalez reach the top of the NFL record books. En route to a 102-yard receiving day, Gonzalez became the NFL’s all-time career TD leader among tight ends with 64 scoring catches. For the initial time this season, the Chiefs scored first with a 32-yard Dave Rayner field goal. Kansas City’s early lead was short-lived however as the Bengals offense answered right back. Cincinnati took a 7-3 lead in just four plays as QB Carson Palmer threw a 42-yard TD pass to WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh. The momentum quickly swung back in the Chiefs direction when DE Jared Allen made his first of several big plays on the day. On third down from the Bengals 16-yard line, Allen and DE Tamba Hali combined to sack Palmer, forcing a punt and giving Kansas City great field position. RB Larry Johnson broke off a 20-yard run to get inside the Red Zone. Then, from the three-yard line, QB Damon Huard connected with Gonzalez for the tight end’s 63rd career touchdown, placing him first in NFL history among tight ends. Gonzalez’s record-setting score also put the Chiefs back in front 10-7 late in the first quarter. Back on the defensive side of the ball Allen was at it again, this time sacking Palmer and forcing a fumble to give the Chiefs the ball at the Cincinnati 45-yard line. Johnson looked as though he would add to the Chiefs lead as he broke a 34-yard run, but had the ball ripped out at the one-yard line by CB Deltha O’Neal. The fumble then bounced out the back of the end zone for a Bengals touchback. Johnson’s fumble snapped a streak of 471 consecutive touches (rushes and rec.) without a fumble, a mark that stood as the longest active streak in the NFL until that play. Johnson would find the end zone moments later after a CB Patrick Surtain INT. Two completions from Huard set up Johnson for an eight-yard TD run, giving the Chiefs a 17-7 lead. Kansas City added on another Rayner field goal just before halftime to take a 20-7 lead into the locker room. After a scoreless third quarter, the two teams combined for 20 fourth-quarter points. Despite the scoring flurry, the Chiefs never allowed the Bengals to get closer than a touchdown. Cincinnati booted a 33-yard field goal at the start of the fourth quarter, but the Chiefs answered with another score by their Pro Bowl tight end. A 26-yard Huard-to-Gonzalez TD pass stretched the Kansas City lead to 27-10 with 8:03 left in the game. The Bengals would try to make it interesting late as Palmer went to a no-huddle offense and found success. He completed four passes on the ensuing drive including a 30-yard scoring strike to Houshmanzadeh that cut the Chiefs lead to 27-17 with just over 5:00 remaining. The last few minutes became a little intense as the Chiefs were unable to run out the clock on two late possessions. That gave the Bengals a chance to creep closer as a 36-yard field goal brought them within seven points with 0:18 remaining. However, an onside kick effort bounced right into the arms of Chiefs S Jarrad Page icing the 27-20 victory for Kansas City.

The Chiefs registered a 20-9 victory at Oakland, becoming the first team to ever hand the Raiders eight consecutive losses. Two days before Christmas, Oakland was in a giving mood, committing five turnovers, including three in the first half as the Chiefs jumped out to a 17-6 halftime lead. Kansas City sacked Oakland QB Andrew Walter 4.0 times, while S Jarrad Page registered a pair interceptions in the end zone to lead the Chiefs defensive charge.

The Raiders got as far as the Chiefs six-yard line on their opening drive before the Kansas City defense stiffened. K Sebastian Janikowski booted a 25-yard field goal to give Oakland a 3-0 advantage for its only lead of the game.

Kansas City responded against the Raiders fourth-ranked defense with a scoring march of its own. Head coach Herm Edwards rolled the dice facing a fourth-and-eight from the Oakland 33-yard line when QB Trent Green found WR Samie Parker for a 24-yard pass and a first down. Three plays later, Green shuffled to his right and found WR Eddie Kennison open in the end zone for a six-yard touchdown.

DE Tamba Hali made the first big defensive play of the night for the Chiefs as he sacked Walter and forced him to fumble on the play. DE Jared Allen recovered the fumble at the Raiders 38-yard line. K Lawrence Tynes converted the short field with a 29-yard FG to give the Chiefs a 10-3 advantage.

Behind the running of RB Justin Fargas the Raiders were able to put together their second scoring march of the game. But like the first, the Chiefs defense forced the Raiders to settle for a Janikowski field goal, this time from 37 yards out.

Later in the second quarter Allen recorded a sack-and-strip of Walter and recovered the fumble for good measure. It took the Chiefs five plays to put another TD on the board. RB Larry Johnson started the drive with a 17-yard run and then Green completed three consecutive passes. Johnson capped the drive with a one-yard scoring run for a 17-6 halftime lead.

Oakland opened the second half with another field goal, but that would be as close as they would get. The Chiefs then put the ball in the hands of their workhorse, as Johnson carried the ball six times on the drive. Tynes capped the march with a 28-yard field goal to give the the Chiefs a 20-9 cushion.

Page would intercept his second pass of the game in the end zone to end an Oakland scoring threat in the fourth quarter. The Chiefs would turn the ball over when CB Nnamdi Asomugha intercepted a pass at the Oakland 25-yard line. However the Raiders would fumble away the possession when WR Johnnie Morant was stripped by CB Ty Law stripped and LB Derrick Johnson recovered the loose ball.

GAME NOTES• On a six-yard carry in the fourth quarter RB Larry Johnson recorded his 371st carry of the season to break RB Christian Okoye’s Chiefs single-season mark of 370 rushing attempts.• DE Jared Allen recorded his sixth fumble recovery of the season, tying Deron Cherry (’88) and Dan Saleaumua (’90) for the Chiefs single-season record.
