It has been an eventful and busy start to term. Staff had training in Success for all-Curriculum Differentiation on the first day back. Run by the support services team with key note speaker, Libby Brown, staff attended a number of workshops including creating positive learning environments. This work supports our Site Improvement Plan to create resilient learners and improve teacher pedagogy.

The school STEM project formally commenced with a meeting with the appointed architect, Deborah Aukland from Brown Falconer together with DECD personnel and myself. The meeting was productive and now the architect will develop some concept plans for further discussion before plans are drawn up.

Students and staff farewelled our Year 12 students last Friday with a breakfast and an assembly where students received a number of awards and reflected on their school journey. They are now preparing for exams or finishing off assignment work before moderation. Exams conclude on Thursday November 17 for our students and results will be available on Tuesday 20 December. Year 12 is a tough time for both students and families and resilience is needed to keep going when times are tough.

Earlier in the year a Year 4 student created a petition to have some more play areas and swings in the school. These ideas have been discussed at committee level and thus at the beginning of the term I gave the students a challenge to come up with further ideas and suggestions about nature play spaces within the school. Nature play involves unstructured play in a natural environment and helps develop problem

solving skills, creativity and improves interaction between students.

A successful Transition Open Night was held in the first week of term. Parents and staff had the opportunity to see QuickSmart lessons, Year 12 Food and Hospitality students hosted a tapas party, students showcased their music talent and conducted school tours and the Library ran a Baby Bounce session. We hope this will become an annual event. Thank you to all the students who gave up their time to be part of the evening.

Congratulations to Eliza Wright and Clayton Parker who will be attending a big ideas forum in Sydney later this month hosted by the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Association (ANSTO) .

Attached to this newsletter are the Materials and Services charges for 2017, they remain unchanged from 2016. Any questions on these charges can be directed to the school and they will be tabled and addressed at the next Governing Council meeting on the 28/11/16.

Just a reminder for students to have a broad brim hat, despite the cooler weather, UV radiation is high and damage often occurs on overcast days. Our secondary students should be leading by example but many of our primary students are far more safety conscious.

On the 20th of October the Year 12 Food and Hospitality class hosted their parents for dinner to complete their final practical assessment. The dinner comprised of an eight course tapas dinner, where the students worked together to prepare every component of each dish. Tapas were initially small Spanish savoury dishes served in bars but have now become a huge trend in Australia where the infusion of different flavours are represented in miniature dishes. The students put great thought into every detail including presentation, flavours and the atmosphere of the dining. It was a huge day for the students, who put hours of work into the event and should be very proud of their effort. It was a great chance for the students to showcase their skills and get an idea of what it would be like to work as a team in the Food and Hospitality industry. The menu was a delicious collection of flavours and textures which followed current trends. Feedback from the parents was very positive and the night overall was a complete success.

GOVERNING COUNCILS - WHAT THEY DO?Governing Councils are bodies that govern a school or preschool. They provide the “WHAT” is needed for the school and community.

The principal works together with the council to develop future directions for their site, to achieve the “HOW”.

In your role on a governing council, you work with the Principal to:- involve the local community- develop and approve local policies- set the broad direction and vision of the site- monitor and review the Site Improvement Plan- set the annual budget, where is the money to be spent?

For KCS, parents must form the majority of the Governing Council membership.

The number of parent members is specified by the Governing Council’s constitution.

The committee meet monthly with a set maximum time.

Being on Governing Council develops understanding of how and why things happen at the school, the learning direction for students, subjects offered and it also allows input to improve KCS for your child(ren).

111 REASONS TO USE YOUR SCHOOL CROSSING

Reason 1: Nearly one in every eight road deaths in South Australia is a pedestrian. In addition to fatalities there are on average just under 100 pedestrians seriously injured as well as many more who receive minor injuries each year.

Reason 2: Your child will learn about pedestrian safety by watching you, so use safe behaviour around cars, roads, footpaths and car parks. Always stop, look, listen and think before crossing a road, and use pedestrian crossings wherever possible. Always cross at the safest point, even if you have to walk further out of your way and if you’re crossing at the lights, wait for the green man!

Reason 3: Queensland’s Centre for Accident Research and Road Safety recently conducted an Australia-wide survey of parents focused on keeping kids safe around roads and cars. They found until the age of NINE, children’s perceptual and cognitive abilities are not sufficiently developed to enable them to make sound judgements when they are crossing roads. Holding hands with your children is the best way to keep them safe around a school crossing.

Reason 4: The Australian Road Rules states that a pedestrian must not cross a road within 20 metres of a crossing (including a school crossing) except at that crossing.

And the other remaining 107 reasons? That’s the amount of the fine ($107) that can be issued by SA Police for failing to cross within 20 metres of the school crossing. So keep an eye out for any hazards and keep holding hands until you’re all safely in the school yard or in the car.

This article has been prepared by A/Sgt Nigel ALLEN of the Road Safety Section, South Australia Police. If parents have any questions about school crossings please contact the Road Safety Section on the telephone number 82076586.
