ACADEMIC HONESTY
Don’t plagiarize!
What is plagiarism?
Plagiarism is academic stealing and lying. An individual uses
someone else’s words or ideas and fails to give proper, if any, credit to the original source.(Standley Lake High School
Policy, 1)
What kinds of things need to be documented? Books Web sites Magazines and
newspapers Radio or television Speeches Government
sources Letters
What are examples of plagiarism? Word for word copying from a source without using
quotes and citing the source. Letting someone else hand in your work as their own. Turning in someone else’s work as your own. Copying another person’s work. Having someone else do an assignment for you. Paraphrasing or summarizing a document without
documentation. Buying a paper/assignment and turning it in as your
own. Cutting and pasting from a web site and saying it’s
your work. Working together with someone without the
teacher’s permission.
What does the teacher consider plagiarism? Copying someone else’s homework in class or
during study hall because you didn’t finish yours. Taking notes word for word from a PowerPoint or
the textbook and then putting those exact words into an essay.
Sharing work when you weren’t given permission to do so.
Group work where only one person actually does the work and everyone else copies it.
Researching outside information for an essay and not documenting where it came from.
Do I have to cite EVERYTHING????
No, information that is considered to be common knowledge does not have to be documented.
(Lancaster High School, 1)
How do I know if it’s common knowledge?
Examples of common knowledge:
Dates of events Names of
important people Facts about specific
historical events Most information in
your textbooks.
Who is guilty of plagiarism?
If you write an essay, do an assignment or present information that is not your own work or your own ideas, you are guilty of plagiarism.
If you allow someone to copy your work, ideas or assignment and turn it in as their own, you are guilty of plagiarism.
Don’t be like Vanilla Ice!
Vanilla Ice sampled from David Bowie and Queen’s song Under Pressure without permission.
He claimed it was not copied because he changed one note.
He ended up settling out of court with them for over $500,000. Vanilla Ice is now “uncool.”
This is a perfect example of why you can’t just change one word in a sentence and call it your own!
Plagiarism is humiliating! Don’t do it!
Milli Vanilli was a pop group that became popular in the late 80s and early 90s.
In 1990 they won a Grammy for best new artist.
It was then revealed that they had lip synched the album and their Grammy was revoked. Their reputation was forever ruined.
Plagiarism follows you through life! Don’t do it!
