About Barbican Theatre Established in 1980, the Barbican Theatre (a charity) is Plymouth’s most intimate and most unusual theatre. Although our home is in the heart of the historic Barbican our work goes out across the city and SW region. We present and produce a diverse artistic programme of exciting and challenging Theatre and Dance that we feel reflects the world in which we live. Some of this work takes place in our building and others in surprising places that enable communities to meet the Arts on their own terms. Education, and the development of creative skills, is at the heart of all we do. Our vision is to empower young people through creativity to be the next generation of artists, innovators and socially engaged activists. We do this by providing progression routes for young people from the age of 18 months to 25 years to develop their talents, explore their humanity and take leadership roles in the organisation. This enables our young people to transition out of our projects and programmes and begin journeys as independent artists, facilitators, producers and makers.
