A Sober Mind I write today of a peculiar verse in the Second Epistle to the Corinthians. St. Paul, having already twice visited the peo-ple of Corinth, writes to them a defense of his past actions. It seems that the skeptics still within that community had accused Paul and his associates of false humility and self-righteousness. He responds that, though he may have ap-peared to be out of his mind, it was purely from the ecstasy one feels when proclaiming the Word of God: “For if we are out of our minds, it is for God; if we are rational, it is for you.” (2 Cor. 5:13)

The particular word I focus on here is the word he uses for “rational”: sōphronoumen (Gr. σωφρονοῦμεν). This word has roots in sōphrosynē, which was considered a great vir-tue by thinkers such as Aristotle: “the temperate man craves for the things be ought, as he ought, as when he ought; and when he ought; and this is what rational princi-ple directs.” (N.E., III.xii, see Aquinas, Summa II-II, q. 141, a. 2) As St. Paul had been rebuked by Festus in Acts 26 for appearing too eccentric, he now had to take time to exclaim (paraphrasing immensely) “Really, people? I’m not speak-ing with great emotion because I want to put on a show, but because the Spirit fills me with an indescribable joy that I’d never dare to subdue! And when I quietly but confidently speak of the logic of faith, I don’t do so to appear wise but to appear rational, that many more of you may come to Christ.” What can we learn from this? Should we stay docile when speaking of our faith?

No. Though we should never approach a skeptic with con-

descending taunts or threats of fire and brimstone, we

should never be afraid to let the Holy Spirit take control of

our tongues and our intentions. If people tell you to subdue

your faith, remember Lactantius’ words: “We must not, they

say, rejoice with excessive joy, but moderately and temper-

ately. [They might as well say] that we must not run swiftly,

but walk quietly. But it is possible that he who walks

may err, and that he who runs may keep the right

path.” (Divine Institutes, VI.xvi) Keep the right path, my

friends.

Parish Leadership Opportunity St. Joseph and St. Jude Parishes have openings, and a great need, for parish pastoral council members. This is your chance to help lead your parish into the future. Meet-ings are once per month, 10 months per year. St. Jude is also looking for a Trustee-Secretary. This trustee is part of the parish pastoral council. If you are interested in serving your parish in this manner, please contact Fr. Tony or Carol Kittell (496-2160 / [email protected] / [email protected]). These are important positions and we need you to step forward and help fill them.

Safety At Mass

Even with the start of vaccinations against Covid-19, just as an update, we are still at 25% capacity for masses; we still strongly encourage the wearing of masks; we are still social distancing at mass; we still are asking those who prefer to receive Communion on the tongue to wait to come forward until all others have received Communion; and we are still sanitizing our churches. So far, the normal attendance for a weekend mass is approximately 50-60 people, which is below the 25% capacity. The dispensation to attend mass in person is still in effect for those who are not comfortable coming to Mass because of age or health/safety issues. Although we do not take temperatures, we do have masks and hand sanitizer available. If you are not feeling well for any reason, we ask that you please stay home. Be assured that we are doing our best to keep our churches a safe place to worship.

Spanish Mass Opportunities - West Side GB Annunciation of the BVM, 401 Gray St is now offering weekly Spanish Masses at 12:30 pm on Sunday (NOTE new time). Ample parking on the surrounding streets, parking lot behind the church, and Kellogg St parking lot. Handicap entrance with elevator access, please use door #5, behind the church.

In this Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus says: “Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.” As disciples, we are called to continue God’s work on earth. Taking care of God’s poor is indeed living gospel values. Severe Weather Notice For safety reasons, if the Green Bay schools (GRACE, Providence Academy, public, etc.) are closed or have a 2 hour delay due to bad weather, there WILL NOT be a morning Mass that day. We plan to have Saturday and Sunday Masses as scheduled; however, if there is severe weather, one or more weekend masses may be can-celled. Feel free to call Carol at 920-606-3206 to check on weekend mass availability. Be very conscientious and use your best judgment before coming out for Mass in inclem-ent weather. Your safety is of utmost importance and we cannot guarantee that parking lots will be cleared. If schools are closed due to weather, the Faith Formation Center, St. Patrick Food Pantry and Love Life will be closed. If there is a 2-hour delay, Faith Formation, the pan-try and Love Life will be open. Every attempt will be made to have the Quad-Parish and Faith Formation Office open, but please call before coming since we may get in late or leave early. Our main concern is keeping everyone safe and we don’t want you coming to the office if it is not open. This policy is in effect for the Quad-Parish Office and the Faith Formation Office.

The Peace and Love of God After a very long and boring homily the parishioners filed out of the church saying nothing to the pastor. Towards the end of the line was a thoughtful person who always commented on the homilies.

“Father, today your homily reminded me of the peace and love of God!”

The pastor was thrilled. “No one has ever said anything like that about my preaching before. Why did it remind you?”

“Well, it reminded me of the peace of God because it sur-passed all understanding, and the love of God because it en-dured forever!” ©LPi
