Dearly Beloved Sacred Heart Family, For many years I prayed this Psalms as a monk without appreciating it fully:

“If the LORD had not been on our side,” let Israel say—

“If the LORD had not been on our side when people rose against us, then would they have swallowed us alive when their anger was kindled. Then would the waters have engulfed us, the torrent gone over us; over our head would have swept the raging waters.” Blest be the LORD who did not give us a prey to their teeth! Our life, like a bird, has escaped from the snare of the fowler.

Indeed, the snare has been broken, and we have escaped. Our help is in the name of the LORD, who made heaven and earth. Ps 124

What a beauty! And so it was, “my life, like a bird, escaped

from the snare of the fowler.” I know I will be asked many

questions and the truth is, I don’t know most of the answers.

The situation I encountered is as new to me as it will be for

any one of you hearing it from me. I’ve heard stories of such

incidents, but never encountered it. Like many mass

shooting incidents, we never think it might be us one day.

Well, December 31st, 2020 was my turn. I didn’t know who

they were – whether they were armed robbers, kidnapers,

Muslim armed bandits, assassins – it’s still a mystery to me.

My flight arrived in Lagos at 9:00 a.m. in the morning. I

picked up a car from the Dominican parish close to the

airport. The Dominican Superior asked me to stay the night

and leave for the East region the next day, but I was too

excited to usher in the New Year with my family. I figured I

could make the 7-hour drive and for most of the way, it was

smooth. I was just about 45 miles to Benin City; the

freeway was totally clear. It was a lonely road. It must have

been between 4:30 to 5:00 p.m. I had just finished the

rosary and was contemplating what music to listen to when

all of a sudden two men were actively shooting at me. I was

ambushed by armed bandits.

Querida familia del Sagrado Corazón, Durante muchos años recé este salmo como monje sin apreciarlo en su totalidad:

"De no estar el Señor en favor nuestro, que lo diga Israel," "De no estar el Señor en favor nuestro, cuando el mundo se tiró contra nosotros, .nos habrían devorado vivos en el fuego de su cólera. Entonces las aguas nos habrían arrollado y el torrente, pasado por encima, Entonceshabrían pasado sobre nuestra alma las aguas impetuosas." "Bendito sea el Señor que no nos dio por presa de sus dientes. Nuestra alma como pájaro escapó de la red que puso el cazador. La malla se rompió y nosotros escapamos. ¡Qué belleza! Y así fue, "mi vida, como un pájaro, escapó de la trampa del cazador". Sé que me harán muchas preguntas y la verdad es que no sé la mayoría de las respuestas. La situación que encontré es tan nueva para mí como lo será para cualquiera de ustedes que la escuche de mí. He oído historias de tales incidentes, pero nunca me he encontrado con ella. Como muchos incidentes de disparos en masa, nunca pensamos que podríamos ser nosotros algún día. Bueno, el 31 de diciembre de 2020 fue mi turno. No sabía quiénes eran, si eran ladrones armados, secuestradores, bandidos musulmanes armados, asesinos, sigue siendo un misterio para mí. Mi vuelo llegó a Lagos a las 9:00 a.m. de la mañana. Recogí un coche de la parroquia dominicana cerca del aeropuerto. El superior dominicano me pidió que pasara la noche y me fuera a la región del Este al día siguiente, pero estaba demasiado emocionado para iniciar el Año Nuevo con mi familia. Me imaginé que podría hacer el viaje de 7 horas y la mayor parte del camino fue sin problemas. Estaba a unos 45 kilómetros de Benin City; la autopista estaba totalmente despejada. Era un camino solitario. Debía ser entre las 4:30 y las 5:00 p.m. Acababa de terminar el rosario y estaba contemplando qué música escuchar cuando de repente dos hombres me dispararon activamente. Fui emboscado por bandidos armados.

6. The Church has always paid particular attention to those who proclaim the word of God in the assembly: priests, deacons and readers. This ministry requires specific interior and exterior preparation, familiarity with the text to be proclaimed and the necessary practice in the way of proclaiming it clearly, avoiding all improvisation. It is possible to preface the readings with appropriate and short introductions.

7. Because of the importance of the word of God, the Church invites us to pay special attention to the ambo from which it is proclaimed. It is not a functional piece of furniture, but a place that is in keeping with the dignity of the word of God, in correspondence with the altar: in fact, we speak of the table of God’s word and the table of the Body of Christ, referring both to the ambo and especially to the altar. The ambo is reserved for the readings, the singing of the Responsorial Psalm and the Easter Proclamation (Exsultet); the homily and the intentions of the universal prayer can be delivered from it, while it is less appropriate to use it for commentaries, announcements or for directing singing.

8. The books containing the readings from Sacred Scripture stir up in those who hear a veneration for the mystery of God speaking to his people. For this reason, we ask that care be taken to ensure that these books are of a high quality and used properly. It is never appropriate to resort to leaflets, photocopies and other pastoral aids as a substitute for liturgical books.

9. In the run up to or in the days following the Sunday of the Word of God it is fitting to promote formation meetings in order to highlight the importance of Sacred Scripture in liturgical celebrations; it can be an opportunity to learn more about how the Church at prayer reads the Sacred Scriptures with continuous, semi-continuous and typological readings and to explain the criteria for the liturgical distribution of the various biblical books in the course of the year and its seasons, as well as what the structure is of the Sunday and weekday cycles of the readings for Mass.

10. The Sunday of the Word of God is also a fitting occasion to deepen the link between Sacred Scripture and the Liturgy of the Hours, the praying of the Psalms and Canticles of the Office, as well as the biblical readings. This can be done by promoting the community celebration of Lauds and Vespers.

Among the many Saints, all of whom witness to the Gospel of Jesus Christ, Saint Jerome can be proposed as an example because of the great love he had for the word of God. As Pope Francis has recalled, he was a “tireless […] scholar, translator and exegete. [He had a] profound knowledge of the Scriptures, [and] zeal for making their teaching known. [...] In his attentive listening to the Scriptures, Jerome came to know himself and to find the face of God and of his brothers and sisters. He was also confirmed in his attraction to community life”.

The purpose of this Note is to help reawaken, in the light of the Sunday of the Word of God, an awareness of the importance of Sacred Scripture for our lives as believers, beginning with its resonance in the liturgy which places us in living and permanent dialogue with God. “God’s word, listened to and celebrated, above all in the Eucharist, nourishes and inwardly strengthens Christians, enabling them to offer an authentic witness to the Gospel in daily life”.

6. La Iglesia siempre ha manifestado particular atención a quienes proclaman la Palabra de Dios en la asamblea: sacerdotes, diáconos y lectores. Este ministerio requiere una específica preparación interior y exterior, la familiaridad con el texto que ha de ser proclamado y la necesaria práctica en el modo de proclamarlo, evitando toda improvisación. Existe la posibilidad de introducir las lecturas con breves y oportunas moniciones.

7. Por el valor que tiene la Palabra de Dios, la Iglesia invita a cuidar el ambón desde el cual es proclamada; no se trata de un mueble funcional, sino del lugar apropiado a la dignidad de la Palabra de Dios, en correspondencia con el altar: hablamos de la mesa de la Palabra de Dios y del Cuerpo de Cristo, en referencia tanto al ambón como, sobre todo, al altar. El ambón está reservado para las lecturas, el canto del Salmo responsorial y el pregón pascual; desde él se pueden pronunciar la homilía y las intenciones de la oración universal, y no es aconsejable que se acceda a él para comentarios, avisos, dirección del canto.

8. Los libros que contienen los textos de la Sagrada Escritura suscitan en quienes los escuchan la veneración por el misterio de Dios, que habla a su pueblo. Por eso, se ha de cuidar su aspecto material y su buen uso. Es inadecuado recurrir a folletos, fotocopias o subsidios en sustitución de los libros litúrgicos.

9. En los días previos o sucesivos al Domingo de la Palabra de Dios es conveniente promover encuentros formativos para poner de manifiesto el valor de la Sagrada Escritura en las celebraciones litúrgicas; puede ser una ocasión para conocer mejor cómo la Iglesia en oración lee la Sagrada Escritura con lectura continua, semicontinua y tipológica; cuáles son los criterios de distribución litúrgica de los diversos libros bíblicos a lo largo del año y en sus tiempos; la estructura de los ciclos dominicales y feriales de las lecturas de la Misa.

10. El Domingo de la Palabra de Dios es también una ocasión propicia para profundizar enel vínculo existente entre la Sagrada Escritura y la Liturgia de las Horas, la oración de los Salmos y Cánticos del Oficio, las lecturas bíblicas, promoviendo la celebración comunitaria de Laudes y Vísperas.

Entre los numerosos santos y santas, testigos todos del Evangelio de Jesucristo, puede ser propuesto como ejemplo san Jerónimo por el gran amor que tuvo a la Palabra de Dios. Como ha recordado recientemente el Papa Francisco, él fue «un incansable estudioso, traductor, exégeta, profundo conocedor y apasionado divulgador de la Sagrada Escritura. […] Poniéndose a la escucha, Jerónimo se encontró a sí mismo en la Sagrada Escritura, como también el rostro de Dios y de los hermanos, y afinó su predilección por la vida comunitaria».

Esta Nota, a la luz del Domingo de la Palabra de Dios, quiere reavivar la conciencia de la importancia de la Sagrada Escritura en nuestra vida de creyentes, a partir de su resonanciaen la liturgia, que nos pone en diálogo vivo y permanente con Dios. «La Palabra de Dios escuchada y celebrada, sobre todo en la Eucaristía, alimenta y refuerza interiormente a los cristianos y los vuelve capaces de un auténtico testimonio evangélico en la vida cotidiana». YOUTH MINISTRY

Everyone has something that they are passionate about or something that they like to do in their spare time. But how do people gain those passions? Usually its because someone who they look up to or admire taught them about those things but it can also be because they were inspired or a spark lit up in them when they saw whatever it was they became passionate about. For example, something that a lot of people don’t know about me is that I love to make model airplanes and cars. I picked up this hobby from my dad who I build models with when I was a kid and when we were done he would hang them in my room for me. I would argue that for someone to become a disciple, something similar needs to happen. We don’t just become disciples, someone needs to teach us about God and our faith to start us on the path of becoming disciples. This week we are talking with our years two teens about what it means to be a disciple and what is the path that one takes to do so. It takes disciples to make disciples and the first step is being an example of what a disciple is to inspire others to want to be a disciple. Todo el mundo tiene algo que le apasiona o algo que le gusta hacer en su tiempo libre. Pero, ¿cómo se obtienen esas pasiones? Normalmente es porque alguien a quien admiran les enseñó esas cosas, pero también puede ser porque se inspiraron o se les encendió una chispa cuando vieron lo que les apasionaba. Por ejemplo, algo que mucha gente no sabe de mí es que me encanta construir modelos de aviones y coches. Tomé este hobby de mi padre, juntos construimos modelos cuando era niño y cuando lo terminamos los colgaba en mi habitación para mí. Yo diría que para que alguien se convierta en un discípulo, algo similar tiene que suceder. No sólo nos convertimos en discípulos, alguien tiene que enseñarnos sobre Dios y nuestra fe para empezar el camino de convertirnos en discípulos. Esta semana estaremos hablando con nuestros clase del segundo año sobre lo que significa ser un discípulo y cuál es el camino que uno toma para hacerlo. Se necesitan discípulos para hacer discípulos y el primer paso es ser un ejemplo de lo que es un discípulo para inspirar a otros a querer serlo. Father Al CONTINUATION:

I quickly decided that stopping was not an option as I didn’t know

what fate awaited me. I figured as a priest I was already a sacrificial

lamb. So, if God had decided that this was the way it would end,

well, so be it! I took cover and accelerated. They in turn unleashed

a barrage of bullets at the car. Unfortunately, one got me in the

stomach while another blew up the front tire and the engine

radiator and destroyed other components. But the Holy Spirit kept

the car at a relatively good speed until I got safely away.

What happened next is a long story. It will form part of my future

ministry – helping local clinics and hospitals. I was finally brought

to UBTH (University of Benin Teaching Hospital) at 10:00 p.m.

Don’t ask me how I survived that long, only God can answer that

question. A team of surgeons were quickly assembled. By 12

midnight I was put to sleep for a 5-hour surgery. Let me say

without any apology, that by international standards, these were

top notch doctors, and I wasn’t anywhere close to their worst

cases.

Anyway, at about 7:00 a.m. on New Year’s Day, I was surrounded

by nurses, doctors, two priests – Fr. Augustine Ebido, OP, Fr.

Silvanus, OP – my brother Titus, and my sister Josephine. They all

held their breath as they tried to wake me up. “Fr. Aloy, Fr. Aloy,

Fr. Aloy”, I heard someone shouting with a gentle slap on my

cheek. When I opened my eyes in response, the whole place

erupted with cheers. “Happy New Year Fr. Aloy”. “Welcome to

2021 Father”. Welcome indeed! They were clapping and it was an

amazing feeling. Well, the rest is now history. I will say that I am

60% recovered.

I wish to thank you all for your love and prayers. It’s perfectly

possible that my love for you and my desire to be with you again

sustained me. Please, keep praying for me as I still have a long

way toward full recovery. Our Blessed Mother saved me through

her intercession. Until we meet again, stay blessed in the Lord

Jesus.

CONTINUACIÓN del Padre Al Rápidamente decidí que parar no era una opción ya que no sabía qué destino me esperaba. Me imaginé que como sacerdote ya era un cordero de sacrificio. Así que, si Dios había decidido que esta era la forma en que terminaría, bueno, ¡que así sea! Me puse a cubierto y aceleré. Ellos a su vez desataron una lluvia de balas contra el coche. Desafortunadamente, una me dio en el abdomen mientras que otra voló la rueda delantera y el radiador del motor y destruyó otros componentes. Pero el Espíritu Santo mantuvo el auto a una velocidad relativamente buena hasta que me escapé a salvo. Lo que pasó después es una larga historia. Formará parte de mi futuro ministerio, ayudando a las clínicas y hospitales locales. Finalmente me llevaron al UBHE (Universitario de Benin Hospital de Enseñanza) a las 10:00 p.m. No me preguntes cómo sobreviví tanto tiempo, sólo Dios puede responder a esa pregunta. Un equipo de cirujanos se reunió rápidamente. A las 12 de la medianoche me pusieron a dormir para una cirugía de 5 horas. Permítanme decir sin ninguna disculpa, que para los estándares internacionales, estos eran doctores de primera categoría, y yo no estaba ni cerca de sus peores casos. De todos modos, a las 7:00 a.m. del día de Año Nuevo, estaba rodeado de enfermeras, doctores, dos sacerdotes - Fr. Augustine Ebido, OP, Fr. Silvanus, OP - mi hermano Titus, y mi hermana Josephine. Todos contenían la respiración mientras intentaban despertarme. "Fr. Aloy, Fr. Aloy, Fr. Aloy", escuché a alguien gritando con una suave bofetada en mi mejilla. During the season of Lent, The University Series offers a multitude of seminars connecting faith with real life in areas such as current events, contemporary moral issues,

evangelization, faith and science, marriage and family, church history, scripture, prayer, and other priorities set by the Los Angeles Archdiocesan Synod. Sessions include multi-media presentations and always allow time for your questions. In 2021, as The University Series celebrates its 20th anniversary, virtual presentations will be offered M-Th nights and Friday lunchtimes during Lent, with pre-registration only available on-line. There will be no mail-in registration.

Social media is a great tool to stay in touch, but there are definitely dangerous aspects to much “screen time” that parents need to be aware about. Social media challenges range from funny and harmless to risky and dangerous — and sometimes even illegal. If your child has social media accounts, talk to them

about making smart choices and about knowing the difference between harmless pranks and seriously dangerous stunts.
