STEWARDSHIP / CORRESPONSABILIDAD

Gratitude in Action: Our Way of Life / Gratitud en Acción: Nuestra forma de Vida

Repent and believe in the gospel. These words we have heard on Ash Wednesday when we were signed with a cross of ashes on our forehead. It is a powerful symbol of our Catholic faith and beliefs. Repenting, sincerely expressing regret or remorse about our wrongdoings or sins, is a very freeing experience, one that allows us to reconnect with God in a much more intimate and profound manner. We may even find ourselves overwhelmed emotionally. Having been cleansed of our sin and washed of our guilt, we may find ourselves in tears. “Maybe someone among us here is thinking: my sin is so great, I am as far from God as the younger son in the parable, my unbelief is like that of Thomas; I don’t have the courage to go back, to believe that God can welcome me and that he is waiting for me, of all people. But God is indeed waiting for you; he asks of you only the courage to go to him.”1 Believing is something we all embrace and with which, we all sometimes struggle. What do we believe? Now as adults or teenagers, we remember once believing in Santa Claus and the excitement of Christmas Day, when we discovered Santa really did know what we wanted so much to find under our Christmas tree! The Easter Bunny also was right there with delicious surprises on Easter Sunday. AND, don’t forget the tooth fairy and the money under our pillow for a tooth that had fallen out! Now that we are older, more mature, yet still a ‘kid’ at heart, what do we believe? Do we believe in God, through childlike eyes? Can we find ourselves in awe of this great God who created us and cares about our every move? Do we trust He is with us at all times, both good times and those more difficult and threatening to our well-being? Do we trust only Him, without anxiety, worry or fear? Or do we still rely solely on our own strength, which in reality, we do not possess without Him? “As disciples of Christ, those wishing to follow after him, we are left with a critical question: Do we actually believe that God is truly driving history, that God is completely in control of the coming of the kingdom and all that is good? If so, and since we clearly don’t have the vision ourselves, then it might be time for us to let go of our impatience and needless worries. Being a disciple of Christ does not mean that we get to make the decisions or have power over our situations; it means that we trust that God does and are completely content to let go of all that brings us anxiety.”2 1A Year of Mercy: Inspiring Words from Pope Francis by Diane M. Arrepiéntete y cree en el evangelio.

Some days it’s hard enough understanding people who speak the same language much less people who speak a different one. So it can take a little more attention to catch the nuances of the Scriptures, originally written in Hebrew, Koine Greek, and Aramaic.

Scriptural Greek has two words for time, chronos and kairos. Chronos deals with an amount of time like a minute or an hour while kairos expresses an opportune moment or a particular season like harvest season. Kairos may also refer to the importance of a moment or draw attention to the fact that something is around for a limited period of time. In this weekend’s second reading, we are told that “time is running out” and that “the world in its present form is passing away.” Time is kairos. A month ago Advent was giving way to Christmas. Applying Advent themes to the second reading, particularly those of preparation and watchfulness, it’s clear that the reading is telling us to be ready. The present form or essence of the world is passing away. It is not the time for the routine as important as it might be. The second reading tells those buying to act as they don’t own things. Husbands should look beyond their marriages and even their wives. It is an opportune time for something new and beyond. As seamlessly as Advent leads into Christmas, so too do Christmas themes pick up from those of Advent. Something new and beyond upturns what we know and so it upturns us. We don’t know quite what to expect and so we are on edge. Mary and Joseph were on edge when they journeyed from Nazareth to Bethlehem while Mary was very pregnant. Mary and Joseph were on edge when the inn was full and their only shelter was a barn. These real concerns gave way to the light of compassion and truth. There was no room to live in fear when Mary and Joseph gazed upon the child’s face or when they both heard the joy of the shepherds. Saints throughout the ages have repeated the experience of Mary and Joseph. Those who are working at becoming saints also share this same experience. From time to time it is possible for them to catch a glimpse of what is new and beyond. They don’t know how to maintain the power and insight of this glimpse. They don’t know how to apply this glimpse practically in daily life. They don’t know if the glimpse will survive the onslaught of trial and suffering. But they do know peace. They do know it is not time to fear. They have made the best of kairos.

PARISH MISSION STATEMENT

We are one community nourished and transformed by the Eucharist. As the body of Christ, we are led by the Holy Spirit to know, love and serve God and one another.

Stop into the Thrift Store or call 435-673-1029 and speak with Jackie.

Community Soup Kitchen One of the important activities of our Knights of Columbus Council is the coordination of our parish’s service at the Community Soup Kitchen. The Soup Kitchen serves a noon meal every weekday. Once a month on the first Friday, six parishioners prepare and serve about 100 meals at SwitchPoint. Volunteers arrive at 9:30 am and finish about 1:30 pm. For more information about the soup kitchen, visit their website at https://switchpointcrc.org/community-soup-kitchen/ The Soup Kitchen is a division of Switchpoint. Before serving a meal, an email is sent to all interested parishioners asking for volunteers. Being on the email list does not mean you are making a commitment to serve; only that you may be interested if the timing is right. If you would like more information or to be included in the email list of volunteers, email Tom Witt at [email protected]. This is a parish activity. You do not have to be a Knight to participate.

Serving the hungry with love, dignity, and respect.

The Thrift Store is asking all who wish to donate to give them a call before you donate. Please call the Store at (435) 673-1029. We do not want you to drive to the store if we are not able to accept your donations. We want to thank you for your support.

The Hope Pregnancy Center has a part-time opening for an Events Coordinator. We are seeking a service-minded person with strong interpersonal, networking, and organizational skills, administrative skills and event planning capabilities. Wage is $12-$18/hour - 18-20/hours a week. If interested call Tami at 435-656-5331 or email her at [email protected]. Deadline is 4 pm Tuesday, January 26th
