Overview of the TEA Program• As a secondary level EFL teacher, I know I came

to the United States to take part in an intensive six-week professional development program meant to:– Enhance my expertise and teaching skills– Develop personal lesson plans for implementation upon

returning home– Increase my knowledge about the United States and US

educational system– Develop productive and lasting relationships with my

American counterparts and students

science class, and she also arranged a meeting with the special education department chair

• Reviewed Kagan structures and the LEARN lesson model.

7th. Grade Language Arts class

• Prepared materials for and conducted word sorts for r-controlled vowels

• Assisted with song segment of class and activities: re-learning about jobs in the community

Day 4• First day students used laptops

in the classroom• Assisted students in logging,

and typing sentences in Microsoft Word.

• Students had hand-written the sentences the day before, based on non-fiction books about people who work in the community

• Discussed grading system, including how parents are notified of grades, and the computer software used to manage, calculate and report grades.

Day 5

questions• My mentor wrote that I assisted in the routine

classroom activities in period 6 and that I observed an ESOL Science class during period 2.

Day 6

• My mentor wrote that I prepared, led and reviewed a quiz-quiz-trade activity. She says that I guided students through their classroom routine and that many students had bonded with me already (me too), and looked to me to assist them with their pronunciation, writing work, or social struggles.

Day 7

• On this day, all TEA interns didn’t attend schools, because of a trip to Philadelphia organized by Robinson High School

Day 8• My mentor wrote that I led

the entire class• Sound and spelling focused

on geography words• The song was a traditional one• She wrote that I introduced

facts with a “tea party” and used photographs and the computer to help students reach that day’s goal: To learn facts and information about Guatemala

Day 9

• On this day we had a rural school visit with the program.

• I visited Rockville High School

Day 10

• Topic: 5 senses• We saw, tasted, felt, heard

and smelled pumpkin and learned English words to describe these things.

• Also: we carved a pumpkin and made a jack-o-lantern for Halloween

• The students and I said farewell to each other.

TEA Internship Reflection

• Strategies:– Observed and more importantly, practiced many. Will

take Kagan structures and Holmes 5 back to Guatemala and implement.

• Differentiation:– Will plan for this in methodical ways. Has many ideas

of ways to address different student needs.• Special Education:

– Learned how different groups were organized to address their needs.

• My mentor wrote literally: “Zully was an absolute delight to work with. The students and I will miss her”

• Personally, I am deeply and eternally grateful to my mentor, Lisa Willson, for being such an incredible mentor, and a wonderful friend to me. What I learned from her, not only professionally but as a human being, is priceless…
