We have a very brave student at our school – Chet Sutherland. Yesterday some members of the NSW Ambulance Service visited our school assembly to present Chet with an award acknowledging his bravery and emergency response skills related to an incident that occurred last year. Congratulations Chet.

NAPLAN Our Year 3 and 5 students have been working their way through the four assessments. These started last week and will finish on Thursday this week. Charlestown East Public School – Bulletin best to seek possible selection at zone level. These days are always busy and tiring for everyone, and without the great teamwork that we see at CEPS, these days wouldn’t happen.

Maintenance Update 2C, 2F and the library are about to be re-painted and new flooring installed in 2C and 2F. The library will be out of use for 2 days, May 23 – 24. The work will then move to 2C and then to 2F. These classes will be relocated to the library during this time. It is expected that each class will be in the library for about a week each. Stage 2/3 Gardening Day Last Tuesday our Year 3, 4, 5 and 6 students spent some time in our outdoor classroom/vegetable patch learning about various aspects of the garden area. Mrs Burgess and Mrs Turner were very creative in the way that they integrated an environmental theme and the key learning areas of the curriculum with hands on learning. Road Safety The Bula Street entrance to the school is becoming quite busy, especially in the afternoon. There is a bus stop outside the school gate, cars parked across the road, pedestrians crossing and cars travelling on the road. There are a number of parents who are crossing the road from in front or behind buses which is risky due to poor visibility. The NSW Centre for Road Safety has information about all elements of road safety on their website (link below). Road safety forms part of the PDHPE curriculum, but we all need to work together to keep the children safe by sharing the same messages and regularly reminding the students of the safety rules when using our roads. https://roadsafety.transport.nsw.gov.au/stayingsafe/index.html Student Achievements and Activities Our Premiers Debating Team debated against Charlestown South PS yesterday about ‘Homework should be banned’. Whilst they received some good feedback on their efforts, they unfortunately lost the debate.

All the best to Aniston and Mason who will be competing in the Regional Cross Country Carnival on Friday May 31.

Thank you to the dedicated parents who were able to find a few hours on Saturday morning to run the barbeque on election day. Early indications suggest a profit of around $700, which is a fantastic effort. Some of these parents then went on to support MS Research by participating in the FUMS Run later that afternoon! We are lucky to have such community minded people in our school community.

Charlestown East Public School – Bulletin Congratulations to Mason in 6L who has recently been selected to be part of the Hunter Surf Lifesaving Development Squad. He was one of the forty children selected from a possible 750 children. Well done Mason!

Have a great week everyone.

Great Aussie Bush Camp Great Aussie Bush Camp was awesome and was one of the best experiences ever. We got to conquer our fears on the giant swing, play with our friends and do so much more. We were all excited before we went on the bus and more excited when we met Katelyn aka ‘Kit Kat’ and Adam. Without them our experience wouldn’t have been as fun. Kit Kat and Adam also told great campfire stories. It was so much fun to see everyone’s encouragement on all activities. Everyone was saying how good it was. The food was good since they had to provide for everyone. Thank you so much. Now we know why it’s called Great Aussie Bush Camp. By Finley, Kehana, Jessica and Savannah 5/6H Activities – a lot of them were fun like the dual flying fox, crate climb, canoeing, high ropes, games night and archery.

The dual flying fox was my favourite because you had to climb this tall shaky tower with a harness on and a flying fox. When you get to the top of the tower an instructor would put the flying fox on the rope and attach your harness to the flying fox and then you had to jump off the tower and off you go! Over the lake!

Food – the food was good. On the first day we got to make our own burgers for lunch. For dinner we had spaghetti and it was good. On the second day for breakfast we had the option of baked beans, eggs, pancakes, cereal and spaghetti, you would automatically get toast if you go hot food. For lunch we made our own sandwiches and for dinner we had sweet and sour chicken on rice. On the last day for breakfast we ate the same things as the second day. For lunch we had hot dogs and lemonade!

Tents – the tents were green military looking tents held up by metal poles. There were 12 beds in them, six on top and six underneath.

We had a really fun time at the Great Aussie Bush Camp. By Benny and William 5/6H

TREE OF VALUES What an amazing show of our school value participation at last week’s Athletics Carnival! Thank you CEPS community, staff and students for your hard work, commitment and enthusiasm on the day.

We have been discussing the value of participation over the last few weeks and continue to do so this week. Last week we explored how students can use kind words, actions and a smile as ways to initiate participation in play and activities.

This week we are reminding students to consider making new friends. Why not sit with someone new for lunch or try an activity that you do not usually choose. Children often rely on habitual play and patterns of behaviour. We have challenged them to use the skills they have practised over the last few weeks to include some new friends and ideas at school this week.

Participation at school can lead to so many valuable opportunities for growth and development; we hope you can support our program by talking to your children about the value of having-a-go, trying new things and participating in school and community life.

The Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC) is well under way at our school, with tubs of books being put into each classroom.

Stage 2 and Stage 3 students are required to read 20 books altogether – 15 from the PRC List and 5 personal choice.

Early Stage 1 and Stage 1 students are required to experience (read or be read to) at least 25 books from the K-2 list and 5 personal choice.

Wow, what a fantastic day Thursday was with all the students participating in the Athletics Carnival. It was wonderful to see so many parents and family there to cheer the students on. Also a huge thank you to all the volunteers who helped out on the day. We very much appreciate it. Events like these run so much more smoothly with the extra help. Thank you to everyone who purchased something from our amazing coffee van; a portion of takings will be donated by the van to the school.

We hope all the mums, grandmothers and step mums were spoilt rotten this mother's day. Our students had lots of fun choosing special gifts for their special ladies. Thank you to all the volunteers for making the stall possible and also to those who purchased raffle tickets.

Sick of cooking dinner? Take the night off tonight (Tuesday May 21) between 6-7pm at Charlestown McDonald’s (Pacific Highway). 10% of all sales during this time will be donated to CEPS P&C.

Saturday was a huge success with our election sausage sizzle and cake stall. Thank you to Kristy Morris for organising and all the volunteers who helped on the day.

P&C meetings are held once a month, and sub-committee meetings as needed. Anyone is welcome to attend these meetings at any time. If you have any ideas or would like to join a committee please let us know by emailing [email protected]

Our next meeting is tonight, Tuesday May 21 at 7pm in the staff room.

P&C achieved this fortnight - election sausage sizzle, athletics carnival, mother's day stall & raffle, mini markets P&C looking ahead - P&C meeting, canteen Meal Deal days, McDonald’s fundraising night, organisation of fundraising events. Thank you for all of your continued support.

Rebecca Howard (P&C Committee Member)

We have a busy few weeks ahead in our school’s canteen. Thank you to everyone that ordered a Sports Meal Deal – it was a great success. These events in the canteen don’t happen without the help of our wonderful volunteers. A huge thank you to Katrina and Peter D’Alessandro and to Christine and John Finch for all of your help on this very busy day. Thank you also to all of the people that popped into the canteen on the day to help with counter sales and serving the meal deal.

This week on Wednesday May 22, it is Crazy Sock Day and we are raising money for the Asthma Foundation. The canteen will be donating our recess sales’ takings to the foundation. We are having some special treats for this day – a cup of strawberry milk $1 and a brownie slice 50c. These will be available for counter sales at recess only. Please support this cause.

Thursday May 30, will be our fresh food Thursday and Nachos will be on the menu. A note will go home for this during the week. Leila Finch and the Canteen Committee

Last Tuesday Years 3-6 had a wonderful day tending to the needs of our school garden and outdoor space. Seedlings were planted, mulch was shovelled, plants were watered, weeds were pulled and the weather was glorious. Students also participated in a range of activities from teepee building, nature art and code breaking! Congratulations to the very small handful of students that managed to crack the code and unlock that very frustrating bike lock.

A huge thank you goes to Mrs Burgess and all the CEPS teachers for supporting our outdoor learning space - I hope that you were all inspired to take your classes back.

Rebecca Howard, Celia Wesson and Emma Whittle, your assistance on the day was appreciated by all. Thanks for getting some dirt under the nails.

We will eagerly await our next crop of broccoli, lettuce, snow peas, spinach and Brussels sprouts! A reminder that our garden is open to students Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday lunchtimes from 1.45pm. If anyone is willing to come and assist during this time, it would be greatly appreciated.
