Hudson & Holland Scholars Program History

Purpose The Hudson & Holland Scholars Program (HHSP) serves as an integral part of Indiana University’s efforts to foster benefits of educational diversity by assuring the obtainment of a critical mass of students from historically underrepresented backgrounds with a history of discrimination. Mission The mission of HHSP is to recruit, retain and prepare students with outstanding records of academic achievement, strong leadership experience, and a commitment to service and social justice to be responsible citizens and future leaders of tomorrow.

Levels of Funding

Awards & Academic Policy

Students with a cumulative GPA from a 2.50 to a 2.99 will receive a reduced scholarship or “half award” for that academic year. Students with a cumulative GPA below a 2.50 will not receive a scholarship from the Hudson & Holland Scholars Program for that academic year. Awards are posted once per year. CGPA’s are not rounded up. Students will remain in the Program and are still required to participate in programs and services as part of the HHSP Retention & Support Initiatives Program. Once the cumulative GPA reaches a 2.50, the Scholarship will be reinstated at half the award the fall semester of the next academic year. Once the cumulative GPA reaches a 3.00, the Scholarship will be awarded in full the fall semester of the next academic year.

Awards & Academic Policy

Freshmen with a CGPA at or below 3.00 will be given grade watch status. This is an early detection measure for potential difficulty in maintaining the Program’s required 3.00 CGPA. Scholars will continue to receive full funding under this status, and may be required to attend a meeting for being on grade watch status. Some students choose to take summer courses in order to improve their CGPA. Students should discuss summer school plans with their Advisor. Scholars should notify Jennifer Poe ([email protected]) of a CGPA increase that merits a change in award status. *Note: Only courses taken on IU campuses are factored into your CGPA. Some schools/programs do not allow certain courses to be taken at other colleges and universities. Check with your school/program.

Awards & Program Compliance

Students are expected to comply with all Program requirements as outlined in the Program Contractual Agreement (aka Confirmation Form) that you and your parent/guardian signed when you officially accepted the Scholarship. HHSP staff conduct regular audits of student participation via the Student Portal. Failure to comply may result in the loss of scholarship funds known as deductions. Deduction totals will not exceed $1000 per year.

School of Public Health – $1000 per year up to $4000 total

Kelley School of Business – $1200 per year up to $4800 – All eligible freshmen are invited to apply to the Kelley Business Honors Program

School of Informatics and Computing – $2000 per year for up to 4 years – $500 tuition reimbursement for completing any introductory Informatics course with a ‘C’ or

better as a freshman or sophomore. Can only be used towards 1 introductory course.

School of Education – $1000 per year up to $4000 total

Media School/Journalism Majors Only – $1000 per year up to $4000 total

School of Public and Environmental Affairs – $1000 per year up to $4000 total

Jacobs School of Music – $6000 per year up to $24,000 total

Hutton Honors College – eligible HHSP freshmen are automatically invited to join the HHC

Students are encouraged to complete their undergraduate education in 4 years. Most financial aid does not extend beyond the 4 years of an undergraduate education. Specifically, HHSP does NOT provide summer funding or 5th year funding. Students typically need 15-16 credit hours per semester to graduate in 4 years. If you need to take a lighter course load, consider summer courses to make-up credits.

If you sit out a semester or more, you cannot “make up” your semester of HHSP funding later. The award is for 8 consecutive semesters, not to exceed 4 years from the time you start college.

You need to know what the requirements are for each financial aid award you receive. • For example, merit-based awards such as HHSP

have a minimum CGPA requirement in order to maintain eligibility.

• You must be enrolled in 12 credit hours to be a full-time student. Full time for summer is 6 credit hours.

Course objectives • Unique opportunity to be with

University Division vs Direct Admit

If you are a Direct Admit (DA), then you will be assigned an academic advisor through your school (i.e. COAS, Kelley School of Business, etc…). You can often find your advisor assignments in your Student Center. You will also have an HHSP advisor. If not, you are in the University Division (UDIV), and your academic advisor is your HHSP advisor. You will have a University Division advisor until you certify into a school. Once you certify into a school/program, you will have a new academic advisor within your major, but you still have your HHSP advisor. Regardless of which one you are, you will have an HHSP Advisor throughout your 4 years at IU.
