Lenten Gospel Acclamation

Apostle’s Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; he descended into hell; on the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

Pastor’s Page Page 7 Reading the Face of God X DISCERNMENT

I have made reference to “counterfeit voices” or negative spiritual influences in our lives. In shorthand that is the devil. Many modern people think that the devil is a joke, and of course with amusing movies and imagining the devil dressed up in red tights with horns, a tail, and a pitchfork, no wonder. But scripture takes the devil – or as CS Lewis points out “the devils” seriously. Perhaps if the devils are described in New Testament terms as “hyper somatic beings of immense power and having existed from the dawn of creation, committed to the destruction of anything God calls good” they might be a bit more believable. Ignatius of Loyola took them seriously and recognized that just as there are voices that speak for God there are contrary voices, false prophets. When we set out to discern we must be aware that there will be stray thoughts and “voices” that are designed to lead us astray. Discern-ment would be easy were it not for these ruptures with logic and clarity. Paul himself reminds us in 2 Cor 11 that the devil dresses up as an “angel of light” to lead Christians astray. Surely that means that those under the influence of “pride” [the devil’s sin] might be willing to join the choir, promote church programs and even teach the bible, if in the end the devil can move us away from God toward his own kingdom of destruction and death. That is why Paul counsels us to “put on the armor of God in order to resist the devil’s tactics.” Put another way, we think of our minds/hearts as a closed system which contains our own thoughts and feelings, but when we recognize that our mind is an open book to spiritual realities that insert themselves in our thoughts, perhaps we will get a hint at what discernment is all about. IHM Pray for us Father Jerry

Stewardship Corner When Jesus heard about the illness of His friend Lazarus, He responded. “This illness is not to end in death; rather it is for

God’s glory, that through it the Son of God may be glorified.” Every aspect of our lives—our gifts as well as our sufferings—can, if surrendered to Christ, lead to blessing for ourselves and others.

Respect Human Life. “Selfishness and fear are the root of (pro-abortion) legislation….We in the Church have a great struggle to defend life...life is a gift not a threat.”
