Liturgy Corner: compiled by Pat Raschio (sources Formed, At Home With The Word, Scott Hahn and Loyola Press, Sourcebook) The Liturgy this week continues to instruct us in the elements of discipleship. In this passage, Jesus sum-marizes both the costs of discipleship and its re-wards. Our understanding of the Gospel is strength-ened by considering the context in which it was writ-ten and the perspective of Matthew’s audience. The conditions of discipleship outlined in today’s Gospel may appear harsh. Yet they underline for us a truth—choosing anything with one’s whole heart has conse-quences. Choosing life with Christ means that every relationship we have must be understood from a new perspective. For many in Matthew’s community, this choice brought division to their family. Matthew also outlines the reward of hospitality offered to Jesus’ followers, Jesus explains the difficulties of disciple-ship, yet reveals that those who welcome the disci-ples have also welcomed him. To welcome another in Jesus’ name is to extend hospitality to Jesus him-self. We have many opportunities in our daily life to reach out to others, to be a welcoming presence and a sign of God’s love. At Baptism our lives were joined forever to the cross of Christ, Baptized into His death, we’re to renounce sin and live for God in Christ Jesus. We are to follow Him, each of us tak-ing up our personal cross. That doesn’t mean we will all be asked to suffer a martyr’s death. But each of us is called to self-denial, to the offering of our lives in service of God’s plan. We’re told that even the most humble among us have a share in the mission Christ gives to His Church. We’re not all called to the minis-try of the Apostles, or to be prophets, but each of us is called to a holy life.

Stop Taxpayer Funding for Abortion: This week-end after Mass you will have an op-portunity to sign a petition. The Archdiocese of Portland encourages all Catholics to sign the Stop Taxpayer Funding for Abortion petition (Oregon Initiative Petition1) If passed, this con-stitutional amendment would save thousands of lives and spare mothers and families from the ensuing grief that always comes with the death of a child through abortion. Archbishop Sample has asked us to support this non-partisan peti-tion so it can become a ballot initiative measure for the 2018 general election ballot.

HOW TO HELP REDUCE OUR DEFICIT—GOING ON VACATION? Our Offertory collection takes a hit when people go on vacation because many parish-ioners simply don’t think about making sure their financial commitment covers away time. We are grateful to those who send in their weekly envelopes regardless of whether they are out of town, and hope this simple reminder will help everyone realize that because the Offertory collection is depended on to pay monthly bills, it’s important to keep up your weekly/monthly contributions.

An easy way to do this is to set up your donation through your bank’s automatic bill pay, or set up a ParishPay account that charges your credit card (and gets you miles besides!). As you know, we have a sizeable financial deficit (currently -$100,000) that is growing week by week. Our fiscal year ends June 30th, and your gift could make a difference. We are so grateful to the 30% of parishioners who faithfully contribute through the Offertory. It is through the Offertory that we are able to meet our obligations. This year has been especially hard as there are no more resources to cover the deficit. So we depend on you – all our faithful (not just the 30%) to make ends meet. Remember, offering your first fruits is what you do after you say “I believe!”

HIGH SCHOOL YOUTH GROUP

We had our first event of the summer last Friday at the Wunderland Arcade

in Downtown Milwaukie, and we had a great time.

If you missed this event, don’t worry; we have more in store in the coming

weeks, including a field trip to go hiking, a pizza party, a service opportunity, and maybe more!

Stayed tuned to this space for more information as it becomes available.

The world has changed. The modern presentation of personhood has challenges that didn’t exist in

the past. Today, teens are given conflicting messages on a daily basis, and an approach

based simply on rules to be followed is not enough. They need to know that not only is each teenager a

unique, unrepeatable gift of God, but so also is their sexuality, and all aspects of their lives.

The Youth Ministers from SJB, Christ the King, and Holy Family parishes are collaborating to bring you

a series called YOU, which is an exciting and dynamic program that starts with Saint John Paul

II’s revolutionary Theology of the Body, and addresses many issues teens face. It is being offered to High School teens at CTK and HF

parishes. This program will give teens the answers and the tools they need to successfully and safely

navigate through life.

Go to ctk.cc/you for more information.
