Liturgy Corner: compiled by Pat Raschio (sources Formed, At Home With The Word, Scott Hahn and Loyola Press, Sourcebook) Today as a Church, we conclude our liturgical year and celebrate the Solemnity of Christ the King. The Gospel we proclaim shows the great mystery of our faith: In the moment of his crucifixion, Jesus is shown to be King and Savior of all. Rather than calling up images of Jesus dressed in king-ly robes, the Gospel proclaims him as king by the sign over his head on the throne of a wooden cross (I.N.R.I. – Iesus nazarenus rex Iudaeorum - Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews). The irony is the inscription placed on the cross, perhaps in mockery, contains the profoundest of truth. As the leaders jeer, the thief crucified by his side recognizes Jesus as Messiah and King, and finds salva-tion. Jesus is King, but not the kind of king we might have imagined or expected. His kingship was hidden from many of his contemporaries, but those who had the eyes of faith were able to see. Luke’s Gospel has been loaded with surprises: the poor are rich, sinners find salvation, the King-dom of God is found in our midst. As modern disciples of Jesus, we, too, struggle at times to recog-nize Jesus as King. Today's Gospel invites us to make our own judgment. With eyes of faith, we, too, recognize that Jesus, the crucified One, is indeed King and Savior of all. We celebrate and re-new this covenant in every Eucharist, giving thanks for our redemption, hoping for the day when we too will be with Him in Paradise. Forgiveness from a king is a powerful gesture; you don’t really know if you deserve it, yet it comes freely and your life is changed. That’s what happens to us in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Plan to attend the parish reconciliation service on Saturday, December 3rd at 10am. Merciful like the Father:

The Year of Mercy has concluded. The Jubilee celebration was meant to remind the Church of the words of Jesus: “The poor you will always have with you” (Mk 14:7). The closing of the Doors of Mercy, therefore, do not end the Church’s task, but reinforce it in the light of Christ. Mercy puts people first. Pope Francis caught this when he issued his “Six Beatitudes for Today.” If we look at these Beatitudes, we can see the perspective that the Pope encour-ages us to have as agents of mercy today:

►Blessed are those who remain faithful while enduring evils inflicted on them by others, and forgive them from their heart; ►Blessed are those who look into the eyes of the abandoned and marginalized, and show them their closeness; ►Blessed are those who see God in every person, and strive to make others also discover him; ►Blessed are those who protect and care for our common home; ►Blessed are those who renounce their own comfort in order to help others; ►Blessed are those who pray and work for full communion between Christians. Patience, forgiveness, outreach, acceptance, witness, stewardship, sacrifice, communion: these are the elements that spring from mercy, elements which, now that the Year of Mercy ends, hopefully have been burned into our souls as a permanent disposition for life and ministry.

El Evangelio que proclamamos es el gran misterio de nuestra fe: en el momento de su crucifixión, Je-sús se muestra como Rey y Salvador de todos. En lugar de invocar imágenes de Jesús vestidas con vestiduras reales, el Evangelio lo proclama rey por el signo sobre su cabeza sobre el trono de una cruz de madera (I, Nazarenus rex Iudaeorum, Jesús de Nazaret, Rey de los judíos). Sacrament of Baptism The Sacrament of Baptism is celebrated the first Sunday of the Month directly following the 10 am Mass. One baptismal preparation class is required. The preparation class seeks to help parents understand the Rite of Baptism and to prepare and support parents in the on-going faith formation of their child. ►Thanksgiving Mass will be offered at 9am on Thursday November 24th. For Christians, every Sunday is Thanksgiving Day, for the term eucharist comes from a Greek word which means “thanksgiving.” Perhaps it is fitting that Thanksgiving is not a mandatory feast, for gratitude is best served by voluntary expressions. To help you show your gratitude for your many blessings at Mass you will have a couple opportuni-ties. Bring food to help St. Vincent de Paul with their food boxes. During the offertory instead of remaining in your pew ALL are invited to bring non-perishable food items to the food of the altar or you may place money in the baskets in the altar area. After communion Father will have a blessing of bread and wine from our home to be served with our family meal. Some ways families can show grati-tude at home is to make a “thank list” of all the ways we have been gifted this past year. Say Grace before your dinner and pray in thanksgiving for all the gifts we have received. Wishing the parishioners a blessed Thanksgiv-ing day. ►Parish Reconciliation Service December 3rd at 10am This is a wonderful opportunity for you to prepare yourself for the true season of Advent and Christmas. If we read John 20: 19-23 we will understand Jesus' gift of for-giveness given to his apostles and continues today through the priest. Through out all Christ's ministry he offered for-giveness and taught God's mercy. In light of all this it would have been surprising if Jesus had not given his Church a sacrament for the forgiveness of sins. The Cath-olic Church believes that Jesus did so in the sacrament of penance, known also as reconciliation or confession. As the Catechism states in article 1422 "Those who approach the sacrament of Penance obtain pardon from God's mercy for the offense committed against him and are, at the same time, reconciled with the Church which they have wounded by their sins and which by charity, by example, and by prayers labors for their conversion. ►Formed: Online faith formation Parish code :7GGJ7J. Below is the text from a recent statement of Archbishop Alexander Sample on the topic of the post-election pro-

tests in Portland.

In the aftermath of last week’s election, we have seen demonstrations of disappointment and disapproval in many areas of our country. While peaceful protest and standing up for our own views have been hallmarks of the American experience and our First Amendment rights, some of these demonstrations have turned destructive and violent. One such place where this has happened is sadly right here in our own city of Portland

In 2014, I consecrated the Archdiocese of Portland to Mary under her title of “The Immaculate Heart of Our Lady of Fat-ima.” It is at times such as these that we need to turn to our Blessed Mother for her intercession for peace, not only here in western Oregon, but across our nation and around the world.

Today, I humbly ask for a civil discourse between those of differing views, and always with the Lord Jesus Christ as our moderator. We are all equal in dignity in the eyes of our Creator, and through Him there is a peace which surpasses all understanding. dignidad a los ojos de nuestro creador, y por medio de él hay una paz que sobrepasa todo entendimiento.
