Overview

• The Purpose is to collect feedback on the proposal of SI/PI name inclusion in EMCS. – proposed at TC10 committee meeting August, 2012,

Pittsburg.

• Name and affiliations are required for authenticity of the poll.

• 134 polls received so far – 26 people from academia (17 universities) – 97 people from industry (52 companies) – 10 self-employed or N/A (privacy)

• Here is the link to the poll – http://emc-center.org/Poll.aspx

Many thanks to Dr. Jun Fan for setting up the online poll tool!

Why SI/PI Name Inclusion in EMCS • The change in industry and academia

– Signal integrity was a relatively new terminology until late 1990s. – significant progress has been made in the field of high speed signaling – the number of signal integrity and power integrity engineers in the

industry has grown exponentially. – In most high tech companies, the number of signal integrity and

power integrity engineers is more than that of EMC engineers. – The number of professors/students involved in SI/PI grows significantly

as well.

• The Challenge – In most high tech companies, the management typically regard EMC

and SI as two distinctly different job functions, and it is usually hard for SI engineers to justify the travel to attend an EMC symposium.

– The SI/PI papers/activities spread across various IEEE organizations and conferences.

Other thoughts

• More than 20 years ago the IEEE Sonics and Ultrasonics Society changed their name to IEEE Ultrasonics, Ferroelectrics, and Frequency Control Society for similar reasons

Other Comments -- 1 • Another version "Electromagnetic Compatibility and Circuit Integrity" or EMCCI does make sense.<br/>

• Although, I'm in favor of including the SI/PI discipline within the EMC Society, the only thing I'm not too sure about is making the society name so long.

• I only recently joined EMC. Based on this questionaire, I joined for the right reasons as I was guessing which society would be best for SI.

• Some old technology/area decaying meanwhile some new ones rising. Signal and power integrity comes with higher and higer date rate. we should embrace this new trend, rather than the old society only talk about old thing. We need new blood

• Support for the name change to keep in the pace of SI/PI professionals. Also we need to refresh IEEE EMC society...

• SI/PI has emerged as a unique specialty within the electronic engineering profession. It is not well represented within the IEEE, rather it is scattered randomly among several areas. While I would prefer a dedicated IEEE socienty, the EMC area is the logical best fit.

• There is way too much in the EMC society that is of *NO* interest to SI/PI engineers that the envisioned domain expansion by the EMC society would be a failure in both the short and long terms.

• I usually go to DesignCon for SI/PI and IMS MTT for high frequency advanced technology and a large vendor show of components and materials.

• How about IEEE High Speed Digital Society HSD covers SI/PI/EMC

• start the procedure, within EMC society, to have a different Transaction publication for SI/PI (i.e. Transaction on SI/PI).

Page 16: IEEE EMCS Online Poll Summary - emc-center.orgemc-center.org/Portals/0/EMCS_TC10_online_Poll... · Why SI/PI Name Inclusion in EMCS • The change in industry and academia –Signal

Other Comments --2 • IEEE lags beyond the technology by ovelooking SI/PI and trying to annex it to other societies, publishing

relevant papers in other transactions like components and manufacturing. Today, Designcon attracts more engineers than EMC. IEEE needs to wake up if it wants to stop bleeding members and reverse the trend of being irrelevant in EE.

• SI and PI are covered by a number of the societies not just the EMC

• It would also make it easier for me to get FUNDING to attend.

• I would like to see a separate society. SI/PI is also part of Components and Packaging, RF, and Microwave, in addittion to EMC.

• I work for a manufacturer of high bandwidth digital oscilloscopes. Even though my primary role is as a Software group leader, I must be concerned with SI. I have (and have read) a couple of books on SI. Even though it probably should have occurred to me to look at the EMC Society, it did not. At least for me, seeing SI and Power Integrity in the name would have made me look into it.

• Emc society needs to emphasize si and pi as it's natural extension!

• I think you need to start a dialogue with the CPMT Society which also has a Technical Committee (EDMS) focusing on Signal and Power Integrity. This committee currently supports a workshop in Europe whose name was changed to Signal and Power Integrity recently. Since SI/PI covers a vast area, I am not sure if you can have a single home for this area unless the EMC Society expands its scope to include chip, package and system as well (instead of just board). Just like EDMS technical committee there are probably other TCs in other societies focusing on SI/PI as well (such as TCAD). So the question is - How do you plan to consolidate all of these together into a single society ? If this is possible, how do you plan to get the right people to represent these areas to ensure quality ?

Other Comments -- 3 • SI/PI/EMC alliterates better

• The field is already well served by DesignCon and EPEPS. The last thing we need is to split the relatively small field three ways.

• Thank you for your effort.

• I would attend if I could get funding for the trip.

• Its about time. Actually this is good news. I was working on the effects of SI/PI on EMC design as far back in the late 80's / early 90's at Compaq before H. Johnson put out his 1st book on SI. All this was proprietary at that time. I knew this would happen eventually but didn't think it would take nearly two decades. Please keep me informed on progress! I am very interested.

• Formalizing would be a very good thing to do.

• While SI and EMC often use the same techniques, our goals are different and sometimes come into conflict. I think that the current level of attention within EMCS is appropriate and an expansion of our scope to include SI could have unintended and unfortunate consequences.

• One additional advice is to offer the possibility to the Sympoisum authors to review and improve their Symp paper for a following journal publication at IEEE Trans-EMC (in the journal peer-review process the paper will already have a first acceptance for the Symposium). This could bring to the conference more high quality research material otherwise addressed just to the journal. The authors will have the chance to add additional results obtained after the Symp. submission on January (that is 6-7 months before the conference); also the authors could directly use and further develop the comments/discussions come up during the conference presentation. Of course the reviewed and improved paper will be subject to all the submission and review rules of the IEEE T-EMC.

• Change the name of the EMC Society to the Electromagnetic Compatibility and Signal Integrity Society. It is not desirable to include power integrity in the name, this makes the name too long. Power integrity should be considered part of signal integrity.

Other Comments --4 • EMC and SI/PI are closely related fields but I think that, if the number of papers about SI/PI is enough, i

would suggest to start the procedure, within EMC society, to have a different Transaction publication for SI/PI (i.e. Transaction on SI/PI). This could be justified based on the fact that phenomena like xtalk, reflections, transmission line propagation, etc. are perfectly suited in a TEMC but other SI/PI issues like power integrity, gigabit transmission, etc. are a bit far from the common EMC papers. This could also help in focusing the publications in this field that sometimes are a bit spreaded in other Transactions, like Transactions on Component and Packaging or T. Circuits and Systems.

• I think it makes sense to rename so as to highlight the existence of SI/PI.

• I don't think the IEEE EMC leaders will be interested in cluttering up the society name. And I don't think Signal Integrity is strong enought to get their own society.

• SI/PI engineers nowadays do not own EMC issues. Simulators, lab testing equipment and flow remain seperate. We need focused workshop that address unifying SI/PI and EMC compliance

• within the design trends and the increase in speed, bandwidth and limitation in layout, SI/PI become integral part of the EMC quest and grouping them will serve better the engineering community.

• There is a TC-12 committee addressing Signal/ Power Integrity. We need to bring that also under the same umbrella.

• Membership should be free or atmost at very less cost. So that, it will be accessable to the individual who have interest. If it comes under IEEE, cost cutting on membership can't be done as the IEEE is huge.
