1.0 Introduction
Meaning of Open Source Software (OSS)
Open source software (OSS) is defined as computer software for which the source code and
certain other rights normally reserved for copyright holders are provided under a software
license that meets the Open Source Definition or that is in the public domain. This permits
users to use, change, and improve the software, and to redistribute it in modified or
unmodified forms.
Meaning of Hardware
A computer's hardware consists of the physical components necessary to operate and
interact with a computer. Since a computer's primary language is binary, devices are
necessary to convert our input into that language. The binary code coming out of the
computer must also be translated into something usable for the operator.
Meaning of Software
Software is often divided into two categories:
1. System SoftwareIncludes the operating system and all the utilities that enables the computer to
function.
2. Application SoftwareIncludes programs that do real work for users. For example, word processors,
spreadsheets and database management systems fall under the category of
applications software.

2.0 The Latest Open Source Operating System ( OS )
2.1 Meaning of Open Source Operating System ( OS )
An operating system is a set of programs containing instructions that coordinate all the
activities among computer hardware resources. Most operating system perform similar
function that includes starting a computer, provide a user interface, managing program,
managing memory and configuring devices. Some operating system also allows user to
control a network and administer security.
Open Source Operating System is any operating system that is free to use and which provides
the original code where the source code is available (under a copyright license) to the public,
which enables them to use, modify / enhance the operating system, and redistribute the
modified (or unmodified) form of the operating system. The advance user can modify the
code of the operating system to make it works better for them in starting the computer or a
likely user interface.
2.2 Examples of Open Source Operating System ( OS )
Open Solaris
Open Solaris is a descendant of the UNIX System V Release 4 (SVR4) code base developed
by Sun and AT&T in the late 1980s. It is the only version of the System V variant of UNIX
available as open source. Open Solaris is developed as a combination of several
software consolidations that were open sourced subsequent to Solaris 10. It includes a variety
offree software, including populardesktop and serversoftware. On Friday, August 13, 2010,
details started to emerge relating to the restructuring of the Open Solaris project, the pending
release of the new future commercial version of Solaris, Solaris 11, and how open source
community interactions are being adjusted.

Fedora Linux
A Linux-based operating system that showcases the latest in free and open source software.
Fedora is always free for anyone to use, modify, and distribute. It is built by people across the
globe who work together as a community: the Fedora Project. The Fedora Project is open and
anyone is welcomed to join.

3.0 The Latest Open Source Application Software
3.1 Meaning of Open Source Application SoftwareOpen source application software is computer software that is available in source code form
for which the source code and certain other rights normally reserved for copyright holders are
provided under a software license that permits users to study, change, and improve the
software. Open source licenses often meet the requirements of the Open Source Definition.
Some open source application software is available within the public domain. Open source
application software is very often developed in a public, collaborative manner. Open source
application software is the most prominent example of open source development and often
compared to user-generated content or open content movements. The term open source
application software originated as part of a marketing campaign for free application software.
3.2 Examples of Open Source Application Software
Filezilla
FileZilla is free and cross-platform FTP software, consisting of FileZilla Client and FileZilla
Server. Binaries are available forWindows, Linux, and Mac OS X. It supports FTP, SFTP,
and FTPS (FTP overSSL/TLS). As of 18 April 2011, FileZilla Client was the 7th most
popular download of all time from SourceForge.net. Support for SFTP (SSH File Transfer
Protocol) is not implemented in FileZilla Server. FileZilla's source code is hosted
on SourceForge and the project was featured as Project of the Month in November 2003.
Despite the similar names used by Mozilla, FileZilla has no relation to the Mozilla Project.

VLC Media Player
VLC media player (commonly known as VLC) is a portable free and open-source cross-
platform media playerand streaming media serverwritten by the VideoLANproject.VLC
media player supports many audio and video compression methods and file formats,
including DVD-Video, video CD and streaming protocols. It is able to stream overcomputer
networkand to transcode multimedia files. The default distribution of VLC includes a large
number of free decoding and encoding libraries, avoiding the need for finding/calibratingproprietary plugins. Many of VLC's codecs are provided by the libavcodec library from
the FFmpegproject, but it uses mainly its own muxerand demuxers and its own protocols
implementations. It also gained distinction as the first player to support playback of encrypted
DVDs on Linux and OS Xby using the libdvdcss DVD decryption library.

5.0 Pervasive Computing
5.1 Meaning of Pervasive ComputingPervasive computing means that the technology is gracefully integrated in our everyday life.
The user is no longer aware of this embedded technology. It also refers to computers
contained in common place objects such as cars and etc. It appliances and implies that people
are unaware of their presence. Pervasive computing uses web technology, portable devices,
mobile devices, wireless communications and nomadic or ubiquitous computing system.
Other terms for pervasive computing are Ubiquitous Computing, Calm Technology and
Thing That Think. It is about the ability to deliver any information to any device over any
network. In short, it is about computers everywhere, where computers are embedded into
equipment, machines, furniture or people. The current technology has evolved into embedded
network and wireless.
5.2 Examples of Pervasive ComputingEXAMPLE NO.1
EXAMPLE NO.2
Smartphone
A smartphone is a mobile phone offering advanced capabilities, often with
PC-like functionality. There is no industry standard definition of a
smartphone. For some, a smartphone is a phone that runs complete
operating system software providing a standardized interface and platform
for application developers. For others, a smartphone is simply a phone with
advanced features like e-mail, Internet and e-book reader capabilities,
and/or a built-in full keyboard or external USB keyboard and VGA
connector. In other words, it is a miniature computer that has phone
capability.
Smart TV
An Internet-enabled TV set with advanced functions such as being able to
update its own electronic program guide (EPG), record programs (DVR
capability) and provide interactive access to the Web for movie content as
well as Web surfing.
A smart TV may also be able to execute downloaded applications. Forexample, Samsung's Internet@TV is a feature upgrade for certain TV and
Blu-ray player models that lets viewers download and run apps.

CONCLUSION
Most of the open source software is licensed under what is often termed a "copy left" license
[citation needed], a term which emphasizes the license's reversal of the principles of
copyright. A traditional license is used to limit freedoms, which the free software movement
considers essential, the "four software freedoms, taking them away from the users either
completely ("you may not distribute the software") or partially ("you can use the software for
an evaluation period of 30 days; after that you must either pay a license registration fee or
discontinue the software").
