HPI(Hydrocarbon Processing Industry)

HPI Application Overview

What Is HPI?

• Pipelines• Petrochemical Plants• Refineries• Terminals

Any facility that handles or processes hydrocarbons or hydrocarbon products.

Competitive Technologies

• Turbine Meters

• Coriolis Meters

• PD Meters

• Vortex Meters

• Other Clamp-On and Spool Piece UFM’s

The above meters are usually used together with flow computers, TT’s and PT’s (and sometimes density meters) to allow normalization of the measurement to API or ASTM standard conditions rather than simply a gross volumetric flow measurement.

Market Drivers

• Ever-increasing acceptance of ultrasound solutions for high-end metering applications

• Need for low-risk, low-cost allocation and check metering

• Proven stable and sensitive hardware platform

• Range of liquids within reach of Lamb wave transducers already developed for gas applications

Hardware Platform Requirements

• HPI meter is always dual-beam capable—never dual channel– Why? Improved averaging, resistant to flow profile distortion and

cross-flow, redundancy of channels provides persistent sensing

– If the additional pair is too expensive, run with only 1 pair on a dual beam meter [Y=(A+A)/2]

• Sensing channels for temperature and pressure (temp can be RTD or external 4-20)– Why? Required for SonicID function (liquid identification) and

pressure normalization

– External 4-20 mA input is usually active—source need not provide voltage

Hardware Platform Requirements

• Transducers:– You must consult with Flexim based on range of liquids and pipe

sizes—Use your FAST form.

– For single liquids shear wave transducers are sufficient

– For multiple liquids often Lamb wave transducers are required

– If Lamb wave, wall thickness determines transducer type

– In HPI environments, PermaLocks are highly recommended (your customer will thank you)

Additional Output Options

• Beyond the analog input channel requirements, HPI meters can be fitted with all output options available to 7407 users:

– ModBus Gateway

– Isolated 4-20 mA (active or passive)

– 0-5 kHz (open collector)

– Status/Totalizer dry contact or open collector binary outputs

Safety Ratings

• Flexim currently offers the 7407 as a Class1/Div2 instrument. The 7407 is approvable as manufactured, requiring only the addition of a fuse warning label and the FM logo.

• FM rated transducers are built as such and therefore you cannot upgrade existing ones.

• Our safety rating is FM/FM-C and should be equivalent to CSA for our Canadian users.

• 316 Stainless enclosure is FM approved c1/d2 as well.

Information Requirements

• Standard FAST content for basics such as pipe geometry, operating conditions (pressure/temp), piping details, and user output requirements

• Liquid Data Details:– Names/Compositions

– API Gravity or Density

– Viscosities if available

• Instrument setup preferences such as flow units, output assignments/spannings, error behavior, internal datalogger setup if desired, etc.

Factory Preparation for HPI Meters

• Pre-program channel layout w/ SensProms installed

• Install target pipe geometry and select recommended mounting mode.

• Install Liquid Data Set as per customer definitions

• Allocate I/O and span if possible

• Set in user units for ModBus Gateway

• Generate setup report and documentation packet – These ‘extra care’ steps minimize the learning curve for users

who have not learned the meter yet

– All errors in the installation of these devices will be charged against the meter

Special HPI Variables

• A number of new variables that are unique to the HPI meter are available to the user:– SonicID: Temperature corrected speed of sound of the liquid.

This variable allows the meter to know which liquid is being sensed for Multi-Liquid systems.

– DBC (density @ base conditions), S.G. (specific gravity) and API gravity: These are all expressions of the same basic parameter (mass per unit volume of the liquid being sensed).

– VCF & VCP: Temperature and Pressure Volume correction factors used to publish standard volumetric rate and totals.

– Liquid: If enabled, the meter publishes which of a series of liquids is currently being sensed based on SonicID.

Special HPI Variables

• VSC: Computed Liquid Viscosity based on currently sensed liquid and measured temperature.

• Normalized Volumetric Flowrate and Totals (+ and -)– These are derived by multiplying the actual rate and totals by the

temperature and pressure volume correction factors. The volume correction factors are computed in accordance with industry standard algorithms such as TP-25, ASTM1250 and D4311.

– The meter ‘knows’ which algorithm to apply since it knows the liquid currently being sensed by means of its SonicID variable.

Evaluation Guidelines – Some Pointers

• Be sure you understand your customer’s expectations and the consequences of both success and failure.

• Since our resources are finite, we will exercise a cost/benefit judgment on every evaluation opportunity.

• Avoid oddball, marginal, unique or challenging applications for evaluation opportunities — we don’t want to be known as the ‘amazing dancing dog’ meter

• Don’t be afraid to ask for help — this is what we are here for.

Applications

• Pipelines – Line Integrity Applications including Check Metering, Interface Detection, and Leak Detection

• Petrochemical Plants – Inventory/Allocation metering, Process metering, Railcar loading

• Refineries – Same as Petrochemical Plants

• Terminals – Inventory/Allocation metering, Asphalt and Chemical loading

The FLEXIM Solution

The 7407 Dual Beam Meter equipped with HPI software/firmware allows one instrument to replace all the following:

• Primary Flow Element

• Flow Computer

• Density Meter

FLEXIM Solution vs Competition

• Flexim Dual Beam HPI meter including installation cost - $16 to $20K (All Pipe Sizes)

• Coriolis Meter including installation cost - $60 to $100K (<8” Pipe Sizes)

• Turbine Meter including installation cost - $40 to $60K (<8” Pipe Sizes)

• Competitive Clamp-On UFM’s do not have HPI technology (exception Siemens)

• Flexim has superior attributes to competitive UFM’s

Advantages of the FLEXIM Solution

• Superior turndown and low flow capability

• Much lower installed $$$ cost

• Simplified integration because (1) instrument replaces many instruments

• Bi-Directional capability

• Easy installation with no process shutdown

Some Key Targets

• Pipelines – Enterprise, Dixie Pipeline, ExxonMobil, Chevron Pipeline, Targa, etc.

• Petrochemical – BASF, Dow, Shell, etc.

• Refineries – ExxonMobil, Shell, Valero, etc.

• Terminals – Owens Corning, Ergon Refining (Asphalt - WaveInjector), Marathon, etc.

Product Offerings

• Interface Detector – Providing Interface Detection with Temperature Compensated Sonic Velocity (Sonic ID or API#) Algorithm.

Interface & RateThe flow meter reports a normalized sound velocity which can be scaled to the normalized density and can be fed into the flow computer to eliminate the intrusively working density meter. The flow meter also could do the temperature measurement by clamp-on-T-sensors to set up a completely non-intrusive measurement. The external flow computer does the volume normalization.
