Hi my name is Rhythm and I am the Assistant Editor of the Olympic and Paralympic newsletter. My job is to check people’s work to see if they are writing about the right things. This is my third time being the Assistant Editor for this newsletter. I learnt a lot, like writing articles and getting lots of ideas and meeting with the editor called Luke. My other job is to write about articles that are going in the newsletter.

The newsletter is for people in Hounslow so they can know what we have all been doing and to know more about the Olympics and the Paralympics.

Hi my name is Luke Radclyffe and I would like to welcome you all to this bumper edition of the Olympic and Paralympic newsletter, for people who live in Hounslow. My role is important because being the editor is being part of the team. My job is to check people’s articles, organise meetings for all the participants and to write about the Olympics and Paralympics. I was put in charge of the games by showing and telling the team how to play. The Olympics are special because you can cheer and support your own country.

So have fun reading this edition readers.

Well, what a summer it has been. Short Breaks had the busiest summer yet with the Olympic Family Fun Day at Redlees Kicking off the proceedings. We were really happy to see so many children and young people there with their families and were happy to welcome the Young Journalists and the Event 27 team. It was important for us to celebrate the Olympics and Paralympics and hopefully, we gave you a taste of what was happening only a few miles away. In fact, we have been asked by the parents to organise another event next summer so we will do this :0)

The rest of the summer holidays were filled with lots of activities for children and young people to take part in with everything from youth clubs, Kids Cookery, sporting activities, cinema and theatre productions, horse riding, trips to Legoland, Beale Park and Littlehampton amongst others. We wanted to give you lots of things to do and hopefully, we achieved that.

For two weeks the Short Breaks reporters have been gathering stories and reporting on the massively successful Summer. Griffin Park Learning Zone (GPLZ) is a Study Support Centre based within Brentford football club and focuses on

using the unique sporting environment and creative projects to motivate and inspire young people (8-19yrs old) to learn. We maximise the Brentford FC stadium, staff and resources and have developed a series of engaging programmes and workshops for young people with disabilities.

ALL About MeMy name is Dhristi Kano and I go to Feltham Community College. My Hobbies are art, watching TV and also listening to music on You Tube, itunes and Spotify. I like going on Facebook and Twitter 24hrs a day! The aim of this newsletter is to show young people with disabilities what is happening in Hounslow to do with the Olympics. I am training for the Paralympics 2016 in Brazil. I am training for discus and shot-put. An interesting fact about me is I take 10 minutes in the bathroom to do my hair.

History of the Olympics

The Olympic games are a major international event in which thousands of athletes take part in lots of sport.

They started in 776 BC. The Olympic games have changed, some of the changes are the Winter Games and the Paralympics Games for athletes who have got a disability and the Youth Olympic games for teenagers.

Opening and closing CeremonyThe opening ceremony of the Olympics was on 26th July. In the opening ceremony lots of people were singing and the Queen was there, she jumped out of the helicopter with James Bond. I think the Queen was very brave to do that! The children of the Great Ormond street hospital were also performing and they were wearing pyjamas.

On the closing ceremony there was a massive crowd of people and the people were dancing and singing and they were a lot of big bands like Bhangra bands. The Spice Girls, Emeli Sande and Take That sang some songs.

There were athletes who ran the marathon came and they got their medals.

London 2012 Olympic Torch RelayI just interviewed Maria Wayne on 24th of July and I asked her some questions based on the torch relay. She told me that the torch is going around the park’s pathway and then

on the stage “well hopefully we will have a wonderful view” She was with her daughter, her sister and few of her friends sitting under a tree. Right now she is intending to watch the Olympic on the television and hopefully (be positive) Great Britain will win.

On the Tuesday the 24th of July we went to see the Olympic torch in Lampton Park. While we were there at Lampton Park I interviewed Suki Jhamat. Suki enjoyed being at the venue and she thought the traffic at the Olympics is going to be very busy. She also thought we are going to get more people to see the Olympic games. Suki thought the Olympics are good for the people who are coming from all the different countries and participating in various events. When we were at the Lampton Park we saw a band. The name of the band was Brass Roots and it was entertaining.

The Olympic torch The Olympic torch came through Hounslow on Tuesday the 24th July. The torch was held at Lampton Park. All the Short Breaks reporters and staff was there. There was a lot of people there, the mayor of Hounslow was there. His name was Pritam Grewal and Suki Jhamat was there to tell us where we had to go. We had our own space in the front. Brassroots played their songs to the kids and the adults we had a great spot to see the torch. The Mayor had talked about the values they are determination, Equality, Friendship, Excellence, Respect, Inspiration and Courage.

On the 24th of July something major happened…

First we got in the bus and we went to the Civic Centre and walked all the way down to Lampton Park, where the torch would be and we waited for the torch to arrive. To keep us entertained the Brass Roots played loads of songs. Ghausia bought us some ice creams to cool us down, some for the kids and some for the adults. After Luke interviewed Maria Wayne, I took some photos of them then I saw a couple of my friends. The Brass Roots finished their songs and then the torch came through I took loads of pictures and we watched the mayor of London Borough Hounslow. We saw the torch’s flames die down.

Event 27 and Short Breaks Olympic Family Fun dayThe event was held at Redlees Park on Saturday the 24th of July 2012. I met the Mayor of Hounslow and Indra at the event. I interviewed the Mayor of Hounslow and he told me that the Event 27 was supposed to be for people to enjoy. He also told me that his job was to hold meetings. He told me that he was enjoying one of the activities which was throwing the rubber rings into the tunnel. I shook his hand and Ghausia got a picture of us.

I interviewed a 4 year old boy from Grove Park Nursery called Indra who just played all the games at the event 27. He did lots of things like throwing a ball. One thing he

told me was that he is holding a torch for the Paralympics with his dad on television. He wanted Great Britain to win.I interviewed Noor who was having fun and having a picnic she did some running, riding and bikes. She is looking forward to the Olympics and she is excited about the Paralympics and she hopes that Great Britain will do good.

My favourite event was the BMX and Event 27. It was really fun and we could take part in it and they should do this again because, its fun for the whole family. Its like a big get together and it can bring families together, and have fun instead of staying at home doing nothing, GET UP GET OUT GET ACTIVE!! Have fun you make new friends and have more fun than you ever had in you entire life. So it would be really fun for everyone, the staff are really nice, and if you make a mistake they will let you have another go. The activities are really good and you get to do it yourself. So get to it try

new things like the BMX riding, the horse riding, vortex, sprinting, the police men and ambulance men, they show you how to drive the ambulance and the fire engine. They showed you where the hose was and how to use everything that you need to know. You learnt as well as having fun which included people with special needs, its suitable for all ages, 2-3 3-4 4-5 5-6 6-7 7-8 8-9 9-10 and up! GET UP GET OUT GET ACTIVE!!!!

On Saturday the 24th of July there was an event in Redlees Park. I reported and interviewed a lady called Jo Dawson she works on Short Breaks for Hounslow Council. The event was at Redlees Park. In Redlees Park. We reported the number of people who took part. A lot of people took part in our event including disabled people. I interviewed Jo Dawson who was happy to be at the family event. She was looking forward to the Paralympics. The people who came totake part were all enjoying themselves. They were also determined to do the different activities when they had finished they got a certificate and a sticker.

We also had other events and other people like BMX, firemen, ambulance, police, mountain biking, horse riding etc.

Jo Dawson told me Short Breaks planned the family day, because they wanted young and disabled people to have fun.

Our game was called Event 27 and other things were happening including BMX horses police ambulance and fireman and athletics. The event was at Redlees Park.

Staff of Griffin Park Learning Zone and students Rhythm & Dhristi from Feltham Community College, Josh from Oakland’s School and Luke from Elthorne High School. The Event 27 staff included Ahmed, Kieron and Ghausia.

The whole day was linked to the Olympics and we created another event, called Event 27. We set our event there was 4 different sports activities, they were for the families and children who came for the family day. The events where made for the people

with disabilities. I enjoyed the day and the horses but Event 27 was the best! We met people from other schools and the Mayor of Hounslow, the fireman and the police.

Around BFCBen runs with the torch relay

1 person nominated Ben to carry the torch he did not expect to be involved. Only 8 thousand people were chosen out of millions which is such a privilege. Ben felt really special while he ran, the atmosphere was brilliant and electrifying also because all his family and friends were watching. He got the clothes for free but he had to pay £215 pounds to keep the torch.

He felt special, inspired and the best feeling ever running with the torch. Ben’s favourite Olympian is Usain Bolt from Jamaica because he is inspiring, funny and motivational. Ben’s favourite Paralympian is Oscar Pistorius who runs the 400 metres without legs! It shows equality and he also ran the

Paralympics to show someone with a disability can do it. Ben ran with the torch from Harrow which is where he lives. He ran 300 yards. He was nervous because there were lots of people watching including people taking pictures and videos which were going on live TV. He thought the Olympics were good and Paralympics were brilliant as they showed equality.

In this activity. We had two groups. There were 6 people in one team. The teams were called Team GB and Team Poland. I was in team Poland in which we were leading. After the third round team GB took the lead and won the game. All the participants in team GB were very happy but we in team Poland were not.

On the second of Boccia Team Poland won and we were very happy. Team GB was using the blue colour and team Poland the red colour. After the games Nathan the coach took some pictures of us.

Peter thought the Olympics were very good for young people. He didn’t go but wanted to see Usain Bolt in the 100

meter sprint, he is the fastest in the world. His favourite favourite sport was 800m and the mile because its hard. His favourite Olympians were Chris Hoy and Michael Phelps.

Stuart enjoyed the Olympics. He thought it was very interesting to watch lots of different sports. He was

really excited to to see the Olympics and to different countries. He was disappointed because he couldn’t get tickets to the basketball and athletics which he wanted to see.

Visits to the Olympics 2012 Rhythm goes to the Olympic badminton

On the 28th of July I went to see the badminton with my mum and the Badminton was held in Wimbledon. The teams who were playing were

great Britain and Germany. Germany played very well so they won the game. One of the German athletes was so happy that he fell on the floor and said ‘YAY!’ There were lots of people at the stadium. I think the badminton was amazing. The athletes who were playing tried their hardest during the game. when great Britain lost the game I felt very sad and I think they could have done better at badminton.

Luke’s trip to Olympic Park Cycling Event

On Thursday 30th August I went to the Olympic Park with Sarah, Natasha and Clare. Once we got there we went to Velodrome to watch the cycling. I thought the atmosphere was magical and I thought the experience was

fantastic. One good thing I did was support my country (GB). They were actually doing good and I saw Sarah Storey win the gold medal. The victory ceremony was incredible and Sarah Storey was so happy to get the medal. We sang the national anthem of Great Britain.

Chris Wickham is Head of Communication, the BFC website and programme. He was a looking forward to the Olympics since Britain won the bid. He thought this was an excellent build up and took 2 weeks off work.

Chris thought this was the most amazing 2 weeks he lived through. The feel of the nation was different for 2 weeks. The opening ceremony changed views of the people who were unsure about the Olympics. He went to lots of events men’s artistic gymnastics, rowing, hockey, volleyball, diving, modern pentathlon and free road cycling. And the Paralympics athletics, swimming and track cycling. Chris thought the most exciting sport was volleyball. He thought the best venue was Greenwich Park. The Olympic Park was amazing his favourite moment was when Bradley Wiggins won in the time trial. His favourite Olympian was Mo Farah because his story is amazing.

Katie liked the Olympics. She thought they were presented well. They were good for Britain. It makes everyone happy. She was excited before the Olympics. The torch got her very excited. Katie went to see men’s volleyball.

She saw team GB v Italy and she saw team GB versus China in the hockey. She saw the men’s marathon. Everyone was clapping. She felt very excited. Katie wanted everyone to perform very well. Her favourite Olympian is Jessica Ennis. Katie liked Jessica Ennis because she did lots of different events. She is very humble. Rebbeca with Katie

He absolutely loved the Olympics. He was really looking forward to it. He has been enthusiastic since it was announced 7 years ago. Bob went to see the boxing, swimming, judo and diving. He was very excited, friendly atmosphere, his favourite sport is boxing as he is a boxing fan. He thought there are so many wonderful Olympians. He thought Mo Farah was good and he went to school in Hounslow and wanted to play for BFC.

Chosen for the Paralympics!!

I have been chosen for the Paralympics in 2016 held in Brazil. I went to Brunel University and played some sports and got chosen to play again. They told me I was strong at discus and shot put and they said if I train hard enough I can go to the Paralympics. I train every Monday and Thursday at Osterley for 1hr and have some training at home which is running and some training at school.

The Olympians were: Tom Daley the diver who won the bronze medal. Mo Farah won two gold medals for 5000 meters and 10,000 meters in the athletics. Jess Ennis won gold medals for heptathlon. Well I thought the boxing was good because you need strength and tactics. I thought the running was tremendous because you need the huge amount of energy to run. I love the athletics because it is so good that it is worth seeing it again.
