Hillside News Brief February 16, 2018 Thanks to our Hillside Community! Thank you to all the parents, guardians and extended family members who arrived at Hillside on Tuesday, February 13, to pick up students in a timely manner when the power went out at our school. We realize the request to retrieve children from our building in the middle of the day might have been difficult to fulfill; we appreciated your efforts. Thank you for your patience and grace as we delivered each and every student to a waiting adult. Please know that the request for photo identification from each adult there to collect a student or students comes out of an abundance of caution and care for each child’s safety. Thank you for having that identification ready for us to view. Even if we know you well, we want to do our best to confirm the identity of adults there to retrieve children. Children’s Hospital & Medical Center. This partnership allows us to address the mental health needs of our children and families districtwide. The services offered through the Student Assistance Program include free assessments and short-term counseling, where students and their parents are invited to complete two free face-to-face sessions. Children’s Behavioral Health therapists are able to help you address any cognitive, emotional, developmental or personal issues that your student or family might be facing. Students and families have two options:

1. Contact your Counselor, Social Worker or School Psychologist for information about Children’s Behavioral Health, or

2. Call Children’s Behavioral Health directly at 402-955-3900 to schedule an appointment. Children’s Behavioral Health is located at 1000 North 90th Street (southwest corner of 90th & Western Streets.)

In addition, Westside Community Schools will host several free parent seminars offering valuable information from experts at Children’s Hospital & Medical Center. All seminars run from 6:00 - 7:00 pm. Westside Community Schools Early Childhood Special Education Integrated Preschool Program

Our vision Westside Early Childhood Special Education is committed to meeting the unique needs of all learners. Our program is based on quality developmental education that provides a positive introduction to a lifetime of learning. What is an integrated preschool program? In an integrated preschool program, typically developing peers (peer models) are educated with children who have special needs using an inclusion model. Students attend preschool five days per week, approximately 2.5 hours per day, for either a morning or afternoon session. Our program focuses on the development of social, language, self-help, pre-academic, cognitive, and motor skills. All students are provided opportunities to learn through play and other developmentally appropriate activities. Who are children with special needs? Students on an Individualized Education Program (IEP) have been identified as needing special support in order to fully participate in the regular curriculum. This may be support from a special education teacher, support from a vision or hearing specialist, and/or speech, occupational, or physical therapy services. Who are peer models? Peer models serve as models of age-appropriate cognitive and pre-academic skills, language skills, social-emotional skills, behavior, and fine and gross motor skills. Research suggests that combining children with special needs with typically developing peers is beneficial to both groups of children. All students learn acceptance and experience positive social interactions. Peer models attend the program free of charge. Who may apply to be a peer model? Children who will be 3 or 4 years of age by July 31st of the current school year may apply. Preference will be given to children who are 4; however, 3 year-olds will be considered. Children turning 5 prior to July 31st are considered kindergarten eligible and are not eligible for the integrated preschool program. Students must be district residents, have age-appropriate development in all areas, and be toilet trained. How does my child become a peer model? Please call (402) 408-8438 to get an application. Applications and all related paperwork must be submitted to the Early Childhood Special Education office (9030 Western Avenue) by February 23rd, 2018. What happens after I turn in my application paperwork? After submitting the application paperwork, you will be contacted by a preschool staff member to schedule a screening appointment. The application process is not on a first come, first served basis. All paperwork submitted by February 23rd, 2018 will be considered for screening. Parents are encouraged to turn in their paperwork as soon as possible.
