10 August ‐ Feast Day of St. Lawrence The esteem in which the Church holds Lawrence is seen in the fact that today’s celebration ranks as a feast. We know very little about his life. He is one of those whose martyrdom made a deep and lasting impression on the early Church. Celebration of his feast day spread rapidly. He was a Roman deacon under Pope St. Sixtus II. Four days after this pope was put to death, Lawrence and four clerics suffered martyrdom, probably during the perse‐cution of the Emperor Valerian. Legendary details of his death were known to Damasus (Dec 11), Prudentius, Ambrose (December 7) and Augustine (August 28). The church built over his tomb became one of the seven principal churches in Rome and a favorite place for Roman pilgrimages. A well‐known leg‐end has persisted from earliest times. As deacon in Rome, Law‐rence was charged with the responsibility for the material goods of the Church, and the distribution of alms to the poor. When Lawrence knew he would be arrested like the pope, he sought out the poor, widows and orphans of Rome and gave them all the money he had on hand, selling even the sacred vessels to increase the sum. When the prefect of Rome heard of this, he imagined that the Christians must have considerable treasure. He sent for Lawrence and said, “You Christians say we are cruel to you, but that is not what I have in mind. I am told that your priests offer in gold, that the sacred blood is received in silver cups, that you have golden candlesticks at your evening services. Now, your doctrine says you must render to Caesar what is his. Bring these treas‐ures—the emperor needs them to maintain his forces. God does not cause money to be counted: He brought none of it into the world with him—only words. Give me the money, therefore, and be rich in words.” Lawrence replied that the Church was indeed rich. “I will show you a valuable part. But give me time to set

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION Julie Ballman

Faith in the Holy Eucharist is what we need most in the present life to sustain us. As the angel of Lord in our first reading stated, "Get up and eat, else the journey will be too long for you!" that is rise up from your unbelief and receive faithfully and worthily the Bread of Life, Jesus Himself, or else the journey of your life will be too hard for you…when the cross comes for you, whether in the struggles of ordinary life or in the pain of suffering of the illness or death of someone you love or in your own ill‐ness and impending death, you will not have the strength to bear it all; when the current world is punished by God because of its madness in turning away from Him and His laws you will lose hope, thus failing to see these earth shaking events as an all loving Father intervening in His Divine mercy and Jus ce to save us from destroying our‐selves. And if we fail to faithfully and worthily receive the Holy Eucharist we will become the murmurers and grum‐blers as were the people of today’s gospel and we will lose the gi of eternal life promised only to those who believe that Jesus Christ is s ll bodily on earth for us to adore and to receive as our heavenly food in order to fulfill the deepest desires of our heart and soul and gives us the fullness of life, here on earth in the eternity to come. And so, Let us truly open our hearts to the gi of Jesus in the Eucharist. We don’t have to be perfect in order to do this, we just need to become like li le Children trus ng in God for what we lack. We can come to the Mass in our brokenness and sinfulness in order to receive what we need to change, to be able grow in love. Jesus will make us worthy and He will increase our love, by taking our human hearts and uni ng them with His Sacred Heart, so we can love with His love, a divine love and so be truly fulfilled and happy, blessed. But we must repent of our sinfulness and our stubbornness and we must freely and with great trust give him our whole heart and all of our wills. Impossible? No, with God all things are possible…. Fr. Steven Lange

everything in order and make an inventory.” After three days he gathered a great number of blind, lame, maimed, leprous, orphaned and widowed persons and put them in rows. When the prefect arrived, Lawrence simply said, “These are the treasure of the Church.” The prefect was so angry he told Lawrence that he would indeed have his wish to die—but it would be by inches. He had a great gridiron prepared, with coals beneath it, and had Lawrence’s body placed on it. After the martyr had suffered the pain for a long time, the legend concludes, he made his famous cheerful remark, “It is well done. Turn me over!” americancatholic.org
