Bankers TrustExecutive and Management Committees453 7th StreetDes Moines, IA 50309

Dear Executive and Management Committees,

We have been assigned the task of implementing a streamlined recycling program for all 13 branches. Our intern team (Darrin Dafney, Chelsea Elming, Elizabeth Lang, Southanary Macvilay, Nathan Meyer, Uzo Nwaturuocha, Capris Quaites, Eric Schultz, Ross Turner and Colton Wyckoff) was mentored by Jenny Leonard and David Ling. We believe our recommendations will help Bankers Trust become a “Best in Class” green bank.

Bankers Trust is a leading organization that invests in its community’s growth, stability and success. Last year, the Bank implemented a Go Green Initiative at its corporate headquarters launching the transition into an eco-friendly organization. Our proposal will ensure this initiative is extended to the Central Iowa branches.

The development of our proposal began with introductory meetings with each branch manager to help determine their specific recycling needs. From there, we researched various options to support our goal of implementing a streamlined recycling program. Based on this research, we recommend branches use Waste Connections as their trash and recycling provider. For the branches where Waste Connections is not an option, we recommend using recycling services provided by Recycle Me Iowa or Waste Management.

Thank you for giving us the opportunity to expand the Go Green Initiative at Bankers Trust. Should you have any additional questions, please contact Jenny Leonard or David Ling.

Sincerely,

The 2015 Summer Interns

Branch ProposalsAfter meeting with key branch stakeholders and the Go Green Committee, we have come to the conclusion that a uniform recycling program is not feasible due to the differences in waste volume. Therefore, we have developed three different options to streamline recycling at the branches. They are as follows:

WASTE CONNECTIONS:

Current Trash Provider

Recommended Option

Secondary Option(If Any) Additional Notes

AmesChitty Garbage Switch to Waste

Connections and add recycling services

AltoonaWaste Connections Add recycling services

Waste Management Switch to Waste Connections and add recycling services

Stay with Waste Management and add recycling services

May not have space for a residential size bin outside due to zoning laws

Ideally, we propose each branch should start a contract with Waste Connections that includes both their trash and recycling services. Waste Connections has compatible service options, including a recycling program that allows branches to use a residential size recycling bin. For the majority of branches, this is the best option due to the small amount of recycling volume each location produces. Listed below are the branches that we recommend use Waste Connections:1

1 See appendix A1 for pricing

WASTE MANAGEMENTEnding a contract prematurely with Waste Management, for those branches currently utilizing the company’s services, would result in a termination fee. Our primary recommendation for branches using Waste Management’s services is to continue to utilize the trash service and pay an additional fee to add on the recycling service. Our secondary recommendation is to allow each branch to honor the remaining portion of their existing three-year contract with Waste Management. Following the termination of the contract, the branches should then utilize Waste Connections’ services. Listed below are the branches we recommend use Waste Management:2

RECYCLE ME IOWAFor branches that produce a smaller volume of waste, we recommend they utilize Recycle Me Iowa’s services. Recycle Me Iowa is a smaller recycling company that allows customers to call in when their recycling bins are full to schedule a pick-up. One of our goals for the project is to increase employee awareness of proper recycling practices. To accomplish this, we have redesigned the current recycling posters to be informative and easily understood. All employees are encouraged to make recycling a habit, and these posters will provide the information necessary to make this change. Additionally, we created a poster containing supplementary facts about Going Green. The poster provides information about the impact employees can have on the environment and encourages recycling as a daily habit. The posters will serve as a reminder when placed near recycling receptacles.4

In terms of marketing goals for the future, we recommend ongoing education emphasizing how employees and the Bank’s practices impact the environment. One way to do this would be to partner with the These Come from Trees project to reduce the amount of paper towel waste the Bank produces. The goal of this project is to eliminate consumer waste paper by selling stickers that remind people to reduce their paper towel usage. This will encourage employees and customers to utilize hand dryers versus paper towels when available. These stickers could be placed on or near paper towel dispensers throughout the Ruan Building and the branches.5

Additionally, it is important that employees have the necessary resources available to easily reference best recycling practices. We recommend the implementation of a folder within the Go Green Currency page containing additional documents and resources that highlight the Bank’s recycling procedures and other methods for employees to become more eco-friendly. Education is a critical part of the Bank’s transition into an environmentally responsible organization and all of these recommendations can help accomplish that goal.

Green Shield CompetitionStreamlining recycling programs in the branches is a positive step towards becoming a “Best in Class” green bank. However, there are additional options for the branches to expand their environmental footprint. Most of these options are not feasible in the short term, but could be implemented in the future. In order to encourage the branches to become more eco-friendly, we have created a competition that would make it fun and easy for branches to put into action additional green initiatives throughout the year.

SUMMARYThe Green Shield Competition would be a year-long effort that consists of various green initiatives the branches could implement. Each initiative would have a corresponding point value. Bank locations could choose initiatives they feel are feasible and of interest to their employees. At the end of the year-long program, the Go Green Committee would complete an audit of each location and add up the points earned for implementing various programs. The location with the most points would receive a traveling trophy to publicly display. The second and third place winners could receive plaques to display as well.

We believe this friendly, Bank-wide competition would encourage managers and employees to expand their Go Green efforts.

MASTER INITIATIVES LIST WITH POINT VALUES Use Go Green posters and other Go Green marketing materials (1 point per poster) Streamlined recycling as presented in individual branch proposals (2 points) Recycling bins in central locations (5 points per bin)6

Implement Lightbulb Recycling Program (5 points)7

Use energy efficient lightbulbs (10 points)8

Use recycled paper scratch pads (10 points) Switch to reusable K-Cups (10 points) Eliminate all disposable dishes (15 points)9

Install motion activated lights (15 points) Eliminate paper towels in bathrooms (15 points)10

Install energy efficient computer monitors (15 points)

The Go Green Committee would play an essential role in implementing the Green Shield Competition. The Committee would need to conduct yearly “Green Audits” to calculate the amount of points each location earns. It is important to note that if a green initiative has already been implemented, points for this initiative would still be included in their total. For example: if the Grimes branch had already placed recycling bins in central locations prior to the competition, they would still receive five points per bin. Additionally, locations would continue to receive points every year for initiatives already implemented. So in this example, the Grimes branch would continue to earn five points per bin in all subsequent years, given it maintains usage of the individual recycling bins. Once the points have been calculated, the top three locations would be presented with a trophy or plaque. The presentation of the awards could be done at the All Employee Meeting so everyone could celebrate the winners’ successes in their green initiatives.

This program can be sustained by adding to the master list of green initiatives every year. Adding to the list annually will keep employees engaged in the competition by providing more opportunities to earn points.

Did you know…?

It takes 700 years before a plastic bottle begins to decompose in a landfill.

Many landfills are overcrowded and take up space that could be used for other purposes.

Landfill waste contributes to the production of methane gas, which can trigger global warming.

1.5 million barrels of oil are needed to make enough bottles to meet the U.S.’

demand for bottled water.
