Lübeck

• located in the north of Germany: Schleswig-Holstein (SH)

• at the coast of Baltic sea• Largest German baltic port ships to Scandinavia,

Russia, Baltic states• European route E 47: important highway from Lübeck

Air Pollution

• Federal Office for agriculture, environment and rural areas is in charge of the control of our air pollution

• In Lübeck there are 2 permanent checkpoints• 2011

– Low air pollutant emissions– Limit values for Particulates were not exceeded– Limit values for annual average concentration of nitrogen dioxide

were exceeded• Carbon monoxide is not measured too low pollutions since

2009• Lübeck is the 17th cleanest city (of 42 tested cities) in Germany

Noise Pollution• Lübeck :

– traffic• Not as loud as in e.g. Rome, car horns are less used• Now: official project running about noise pollution results in February 2013

– airplanes • Small airport in Blankensee (southern part in Lübeck)• But no flights in the night

– trains • Lübeck Central Station busiest of all the railway stations in Schleswig-

Holstein- ships

• not directly in Lübeck Travemünde• Skandinavian quay: biggest German ferry port more than 130 departures

per week

Encouraging reasonsto travel sustainably

• To save our environment• Protect wildlife (less wildlife accidents with bikes than cars)• Stay fit go by bike• Cheaper (using bikes instead of cars) save gas save money• No traffic jams save time• Better conscience about economy

Page 16: Transport go green

Future plans

• Expansion of – federal highways– Highways (A20)– Rail network

• Fehmarn Belt Fixed Link• There‘s a discussion about the transport of

asbestos and toxic waste to Schleswig-Holstein

Page 17: Transport go green

How sustainable is our region?Person transport

• Bus– You can reach everything by bus– “Hybrid”- bus (electro)

• Train– Big train system DB “Deutsche Bahn”

• Car– Nevertheless many people going by car– “Cars to rent” there are car rental services, you can rent a

car for days or weeks

• Bike– statistics especially students go to school by bike
