A programmable logic controller (PLC) or programmable controller is a digital computer used

for automation of electromechanical processes, such as control of machinery on

factory assembly lines, amusement rides, or lighting fixtures. PLCs are used in

many industries and machines. Unlike generalpurpose computers, the PLC is

designed for multiple inputs and output arrangements, extended temperature

ranges, immunity to electrical noise, and resistance to !ibration and impact.

Programs to control machine operation are typically stored in batterybacked

    or non!olatile memory.

"he #$nergy sa!ing system for tank truck loading% is to regulate the operation of & pumps

depending on pressure re'uirement. A main pump and a secondary pump send fuel to the gantry

station, hich fills trucks ith fuel. hen more trucks fill, the pressure falls, and hen sometrucks lea!e the pressure rises. A P*+ (proportional integrator differential) controller is used to

measure the pressure fluctuations. "he output of the P*+ controller is proportional to the

difference beteen the set !alue (-) and the process !alue (P-). *f the P- is higher than - it

sends a digital output to the PLC, hich sends a digital signal to the -+ (!ariable fre'uency

dri!e) to control the & motors. An analog output from the P*+ also controls the fre'uency of the

-+. "he main pump starts on -+ (for a smooth start). *f the pressure re'uirement increases,

its rpm is increased. hen it reaches its maximum !alue, the secondary motor is started on line.

hen the pressure is too high, the rpm of the main motor is decreased and then the second

    motor is turned off.

"he -+ ystem ill ork in con/unction ith an existing +0L tarters of all to pumps. *f the

pressure remains loer than the set !alue e!en after -+ reaches to the maximum speed, then

system shall turn 01 the Pump& through existing +0L starter. "he speed of -+ shall be

regulated to meet the set pressure.

hen all the Pumps are 01 and pressure starts rising abo!e set !alue, -+ speed shall be

reduced to minimum. $!en though, if pressure is abo!e set !alue, then PU2P& shall be turned

0 automatically and pressure shall be regulated by -+ on Pump3. urther as per the

pressure rise, Pump3 shall stop automatically. imilarly if Pump& is started first, it ill start on

-+ and other pumps shall start or stop as per abo!e logic on tar +elta tarter.

*n Case of -+ fault, system shall gi!e trip indication and shall not allo any pump to start. *f

fault is remo!ed and reset, system shall ork as usual. *f fault can not be cleared and -+

remains tripped. User can bypass the -+ by -+ 4ypass 5ey selector sitch and system shall

start orking ith existing +0L 6tardelta tarter.
